Mitch
Valentine's day is another of America's consumerism holidays. The main reason it happens is because it makes the green. As for what I do: nothing. It is just a usual day for me.
Shugo54
Ok, Well Valentine's day is something made up just to suck money out of people and then claiming it that it is for love and not money. I think Valentine's day is something we can live without but love..that is a diferent story...
i think we should all give up on LOVE.
HAHAHA that sounds real pathetic...I am sorry but it does. Just because it feels like love is something you dont need doesn't mean you should give up hope. Love doesn't revolve around breaking up or breaking hearts. It is about happyness. You have probably never felt love before that is why you feel this way. Dont give up on something you dont know anything about. Sadly, I was just like you. But then I saw the error of my way. Giving up is for pathetic people. Once you find real love then you will see things diferently. I am not just talking a about an infatuation...I am talking about real love. Most people confuse and infatuation with love. You are one of those people.dont lose hope yet.
ok so my brother is a little weird but what do you think he my brother where all cazy here. I still hate it just cause poeple are stupid and they just do stupid stuff. But you would hate it if you where me i had to spend last year with my brother and all he did was make out in front of me and then they went back to his bedroom and had sex with his girlfriend and i was still in the house .
Well that is messed up. He is just a horny person probably. It depends on his reason for doing that. A relationship isn't all about sex or sex appeal. Those people who believe it's all aboout sex and sex appeal are pathetic.
Brasil
You know, it irks me to no end when people minimize various holidays because they've gotten so commercialized. Give me a break. So you can't go anywhere in any story without seeing a V-Day balloon or a heart or a box of chocolates. Big fricking deal. That doesn't make the day any less special, because like Sara has said, it's about what you make it. Oh, oh my god...CVS has entire walls lined with red, white and pink teddy bears! Damn you commercialism, DAMN YOU! Damn this day to hell and all those who participate in the madness, supporting the soul-less money-grubbing capitalist pig-dogs! I have the same problem with Christmas. As long as you're not just buying crap randomly, stuff that you know people wouldn't appreciate, and wouldn't enjoy on any real level, what's the problem there? I mean, honestly. I can understand getting annoyed with those who do just grab whatever and giftwrap it, but to condemn the holiday because of that? That's just asinine, quite frankly. I look at Valentine's Day not as a Capitalist Holiday. I look at it as a day where everyone is enjoying the company of the one they love. I look at Christmas not as a Capitalist Holiday, but as a day where I get to spend it with family, and the gifts are just another way of doing that. My brother and I love spending Christmas morning playing with our toys and such, and we've been doing it for our entire lives. Condemning a holiday because of Commercialism...grow a fricking spine. And quite frankly, for those of you condemning love...how many of you have actually been in love before?
Yume Tenshi
I've been in love my first boyfriend only wanted sex and then when i pissed him off cause i didn't call him this one day just cause i was at work. Then my second boyfriend just pushed me away and called me a slut for wear fish net stocking and a skirt and a tank top. Then there was this one boy who i really like and i knew everything about him that he wanted to tell me then when he says he loves me and when i told him i love him he says he hates me. Let me just make this clear i'm cursed with boy and girls no one will really love and if you someone who think the always someone out there then your wrong and if you say that then im really going to get pissed off :)

Rei_Man
Well, on the subject of Valentine's Day, I really couldn't care less. I generally tend to shrug off the over-commercial side as an unavoidable aspect imposed upon it by society, and the holiday itself doesn't have any great purpose for me. The only time I ever bought someone a gift for Valentine's Day was... oh.... nine-ten years ago. That was nothing more than a simple chocolate heart lollipop, and a card. Looking back on it, it's a nice memory to have, but again - the day itself just doesn't mean anything. Even if I had given her those things on any other day of the year, it would still be a nice memory to have, and the feelings behind it would have been no different. Maybe these are the mindless rantings of a social introvert who's never had a real girlfriend, but hey, I still seem to be pretty sane. Oh, one more thing;
Let me just make this clear i'm cursed with boy and girls no one will really love and if you someone who think the always someone out there then your wrong and if you say that then im really going to get pissed off :)
Yume - I'm not going to say that there is always someone perfect out there, but I will say that you shouldn't try to judge everything on a few bad experiences. There may be thousands of people out there who could break your heart, but there might be just as many who can make it. Don't give up on love so easily. Many apologies for the cheesiness. future girl
I've never had a boyfriend during Valentines Day so I wouldn't know what that's like. I enjoy the day anyway. I live with my five nephews and they make me cards and my friends always show their love in some cheesy way as well. I've never really associated Valentines Day to the type of love you feel when your with your with your lover. I take it very light heartedly, I just think it's cute. The one day anyone I'm with should remember is my birthday and I don't really need a gift then either, I just need to know that you know and appreciate the day I came into existance ::nods:: Yume Tenshi, what relationship isn't ****** up at your age? I know the ones I had were and I got left with some severe wounds. I don't want to say wait until your older because honestly, my relationships are still insane. It's just that you and the person your with can handle it with a lot more maturity, hopefully, and so you're not as sore afterwards. People say down with love, but it's not something you can be down with. It's human nature to want someone, so yea. Whatever the case, I like Valentines Day because red is my favorite color ^_^

DarkOtakuBoy
Anyone think my Playstation 2 would like chocolates or hard candy? ^_^ Seriously though, I just don't see the appeal of Valentine's Day. Just like anatema said, I don't think I ever was in a relationship duing that day. But if in the future I am, then I still wouldn't see the big deal. People should make their significant other feel special every day of the week. Can someone really say that they are touched by getting flowers and candy from their boyfriend on a day where society is expecting him to buy a gift? A gift looses its meaning if one is pressured by society and modern custom. If I had a boyfriend, I can honestly say, I would feel more special if he gave me a gift for no reason, just because he wanted to. Aside from all that, I really only celebrate Pagan holidays. Valentine's Day is just a day where businesses can sell more product related to the holiday. I work in a supermarket bakery, and damn.....I cant tell you how many pastries and heart-shaped cakes we sell. So, I guess Valentines day is good for the economy like all other modern holidays, but its not special to me. By the way, does anyone notice over the past few years that this holiday is getting bigger? At least in my area. People now have Valentines day lights on their house. Just weird. Dark Otaku Boy EDIT: To answer Sonata's question, Beltane (thats how its really spelt...no offence, Chibi. ^_^) is a pagan feast of fertility that takes place after sunset of April 30th into May 1st. Also called, May Day. Basically its a traditional night of bonfires, followed the next day by dancing, continued feasting, and the weaving of the Maypole. For Wiccans, sex magick and other fertility rites are also performed on this night/day.
Annie
I don't care who the hell you but you should shut the hell up right now. :D
First of all, learn some grammar. Then try to be intimidating. Secondly, was that absolutely necessary to post? Why, if you have a problem with someone, don't you PM them? This sort of "post" [if you want to think so] is something I know I don't want to read, and I'm sure other members will agree. Now, on with the topic. Valentine's Day, in my eyes, is depressing. Not because of the commercial/material prodcuts or superficial value. I've never had a boyfriend on V-Day, and every year is a horrible experience for me. I'm always alone, and something always goes wrong. I really don't like walking around the mall or stores during this time of year, because I see all of these happy couples holding each other and shopping for each other. It only makes the "holiday" a living hell. I don't hang around my friends, who are coupled up, because all they do is cling to one another; it makes me feel like the third wheel, and I am really uncomfortable. If I had a boyfriend during this..thing of a "holiday", I wouldn't want any candy or flowers or stuffed animals. All I would want is to be like those happy couples. All I'd want to do is cuddle up on the couch and watch a few movies, and eat popcorn. Or going to hang out with a group of friends that are couples, play some video games, or whatever. Valentine's Day is a day of spending time with the significant other, not prove your love to them with buying them gifts.

Fall
I'd rather spend Valentine's Day alone. I don't have the money, and even if I did, I'd forget all about the occasion until someone told me about it. I'd buy my girlfriend something, if I don't forget about it, but the fact is, it means nothing to me.

Annie
Hm, why do I have this hatred building up for this.."holiday"? Read this, and tell me what you think. But for the sake of the thread, and my membership, I'll discuss with you why I do not like this "holiday". I don't know who started it, what their motive was, or why we must continue with it, but I absolutely despise this "holiday". I'm always alone, and bad things always seem to wait for this one day to dog-pile on me. What is the point of V-Day? Torture. In simple terms, torture for those who are single. Unless, the single person is really into themselves and they don't care. Or, they are very optimistic. Good for them. Sorry, I'm just not in the mood for V-Day discussion.

Roxas
V-day. I hate that day so much. It is the one day of the that I would rather be either really really sick or grounded or somethiing. Anything to get me away from all those a55holes. To make it worse though I have a crush on someone she knows it and I plan on doing something for her on V-day. (This would be my first time so nervousness, 'what do i do?' all that.) But you know how people are in school. They only like each other to be cool. To get laid and most not importantly to finaly not be a "strange" person. Worst of all though its ok for them to have a bf or gf but not for us? No if anything they need to get their head out of their *** and use their small little brains. I hate V-day.

I'm taken aback. You're ignoring the primary criticism of over-commercializing the holiday. The point is that it's silly to promote the idea that people should lavish their loved ones with gifts on a designated day. Aisles of sweets and balloons aren't the focus of intelligent criticism's attributed to Valentine's Day. They don't detract from the holiday. On the contrary, the holiday itself is transparent and silly. If you love someone and cherish their companionship, you should show them on a daily basis. Placing importance on one day out of the year where people must put a price tag on their love is more of a hindrance in my opinion. It's obvious that Valentine's Day is a very superficial holiday, make no mistake about it. Valentine's Day can be positive in that it can help people establish new relationships. I'm not completely against it; I just don't think it should be used to celebrate existing ones since, like Christmas, it becomes more about the gifts themselves than loved ones spending time together. If anything, it detracts from happiness between a couple because people are being forced to buy gifts, there's no surprise or consideration involved. It just seems hollow to me. Shinmaru
I don't have many real feelings one way or the other for Valentine's Day. I've never been in a real relationship ever, much less on Valentine's Day, so I obviously have no experience with that. I never really got other people cards or anything on Valentine's Day, except when I was in elementary school and my mom forced me to, because it was the "nice thing to do". I guess now I'd only get a Valentine's Card or something for someone who was a really good friend of mine. I got a really nice Winnie the Pooh card last year. It was such a simple card, but it was really touching, at the same time. A lot better than the lame Valentine's cards I usually see lol. A lot of the cards we have available at the bookstore are just so garish. They just scream desperation to me, it's like you're trying to overdose your friend on pink and red or something. Anyway, I just picked up a couple of cards for certain people. I think that a nice, subtle card with a heartfelt message can speak pretty loudly. At least, I'd hope that was true lol. Its a pity that so many people take the commercialization of a holiday to mean that its lost its magic and or appeal. Simply because someones trying to make a quick buck off of something doesn't mean that you should lose faith in it. I know its sad and somewhat pathetic, but that doesn't mean that the original sentiment that the holiday was supposed to convey or elicit is gone. Because if thats the case, than we should just blow all damn holidays out of the water, and live life normally. Yes, a day like Valentine's, which is geared towards showing "your love" may be useless, because if you're doing it right, you should be doing it everyday, but if this is the case, than isn't celebrating Christmas hypocritical and just as useless? (from a religious perspective) And whats with this obesession over gifts that everyone seems to have? To be honest, I have found that a woman tends to enjoy and cherish more the sweet nothings that one gives, rather than the pricey, exorbitant things some tend to buy.A home-made romantic dinner, a poem expressing your feelings, or just reserving the time to spend together with you loved one seem far more effective (at least for me) than anything else. Excel
I'm not a big fan of Valentines I guess is beacuse i don't like it much when i'm getting to much attention just the way I am. I see people give each other gifts and they do tend to break theline alot too many expensive stuff. Is funny when you think about it though many of this relationships don't tend to last. All i used to do for Valentines was give my friends cards or the whole class in this case . Something simple. I just wished people didn't make a whole big deal out of this holiday its just another card company plot. Men try so hard to impress women it amazes me, sure some girls love really expensive gifts but other just want simple stuff like a rose , a kiss or just a plain I love you and a hug nothing hard to ask is it. BTW: does heart shaped candies do rock!
Shinmaru
BTW: does heart shaped candies do rock!
I don't know why, but that reminded me of some bizarre heart-shaped candies that a friend gave to me a couple of years ago.
