What were the best things that happened to you at an convention?

Hey out there, everybody. I was thinking about all the good times I've had at Otakon and Anime Boston today, and I thought it would be cool to ask others what good times they had that were most memerable for them. Well, here's mine.

Otakon 2004. It was my third year at Otakon. I desided to cosplay as Goku this year, because the last times I was Hero Yui from Gundam Wing. Well, DBZ/DBGT are two of my favorite animes. My friend Raffi, my father,(he had to pay for meals and such, also look after my brother.), my younger brother and I went. Dad and my brother left us to venture on our own at the con, and would join up with us later.Otakon was crowded and jumping as usual. Spirts were high, and everyone was super freindly as allways. That's why I love cons so much. It's like we're one big happy family. I had some conversations about anime, video games, and comics, with complete strangers. It felt pretty damn good. More people paid attention to me this year because I was Goku. Well, one day, I met a girl who was dressed as some...pink cat girl or somthing. She wore the black cat ear hat on her head, long pink braids, black boots, pink pants, and a black tank top. I think I gave her some pocky. I said goodbye, and went to the dealers room. Later on, Raff and I saw her. I said hello, but she dropped a poster. I tried to give it back to her, but we lost her in the crowd. I took a peek at the poster. "Labarinth." Good movie. Well, Raff and I wanted to give it back to her, and we spent two and a half hours looking for her. We at last desided to drop it off at the lost and found, and there she was standing in front of it. I handed to her,and she happily jumped on me, and smothered my face with kisses. "My poster!! You found it!! Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!!!IloveyouIloveyouIloveyouIloveyou!!" :D Raffi snapped a couple photos (One of which was her giving me a kiss on the cheek :D. Raff got a kiss too, because he helped. Well, Miss Kitty thanked us again, saying she was so upset when she lost the poster, and appreated it. (I should've got her e-maiil. Oh well.) I said "Hey, hero stuff is what I do, I'm Goku, right?" She said goodbye, and Raff and I sat down for a minute. "We're mighty heroes." I said. "Yeah." He agreed. That's my story. Let's hear your stories. See you later!

That was touching, but... yeah...

I've only been to one convention, and it was a mostly video game one. It was Ubercon III, which happened over the summer. My roommate motivated me to go. I didn't cosplay or anything, but there were quite a few cosplayers there. Also, if you wanted, you could just watch an anime marathon for the entire day on the fifth floor. I checked it out momentarily. It was a very nice suite, but I didn't see the point of coming to a convention to sit with people and watch something that's widely available.

Moving on, there was this dealer who sold real weapons that were based off of various fantasy things. I think he had a few anime-related things as well. Oh, and BESN (Big Eyes Small Nose - an anime stereotype thingy) was available for RPGing, and I saw quite a few people playing it. Ubercon was primarily about RPGing and non-electrical forms of game playing, but there's a growing amount of video games for the events.

Anyway, the best things that happened to me:
I got to see independent film-making at its best. There was this relatively successful "The Gamers" movie that these people made during college, and now they are going to scale it up to Hollywood level with the sequel. We got to sitdown and chat with those guys, and it was quite interesting. For cutting corners, their work was quite impressive.

I won the Soul Caliber II tournament there ("raped," according to my roommate). I was shaken up really bad after every match, though. =/ I get too nervous when it counts, haha.

The most rewarding aspect (aside from the $62 worth of tickets) was shutting the tournament coordinator up. God, the WHOLE time, he would boast about how the second-in-place from yesterday's tournament was invited back (top 3 were invited back, but only the 2nd place guy came), and that he's here to take the title he justly deserved. It was like wrestling... Boasting and trash-talking is fine, but this guy would play favorites as well, giving him the bye (bi? you know, a free win to the next round) every time. And then he made sure he was the last guy I faced. The guy before that was closer, because he pulled off a few ring-outs on me. When I finally fought the guy, it wasn't anything spectacular.

Here's a little advice: don't ask "is there anyone who can beat this guy?" if he's in second place. Why? Because there's a reason he's second and not first!

Oh, and the best part of Ubercon III was meeting Tycho and Gabe of Penny Arcade fame. We got to talk to them. ^^ It was quite fun, haha. They are pretty leisurely guys, and I got an autographed shirt and drawing. Double w00t. I had a minute to talk with Gabe, but that was it. I must have looked like a rabid fangirl, just standing and staring, haha. Oh, and one of the funniest things (paraphrased):

"How did you come up with the Fruit-F###er?" ~Someone
"Let's just say, there's a folder on my computer that no person should ever see..." ~Tycho

Thanks for replying. Sounds like you had a lot of fun. Otakon this year is going to rock hard! Guess who's coming? Scott Mcneil. You know, Duo. But I knew him best as Piccolo when Pinoneer owned the rights to DBZ, before he became Duo. Thanks again. Keep the replys coming, everyone! Thanks!

Hm...my friend and I were graced with three awesomely cool guys dressed as tetris pieces...how cool is that? They were my heroes for a long time. :3 [there was also a guy dressed as a giant Pocky box] And I KNOW that seeing people dressed as tetris pieces owns everything that everyone here just said. ^_~ Wait, well, two years ago there were three guys dressed up as the Powerpuff Girls. Hm.

Thought meeting Tycho and Gabe would been awesome...I'd probably follow them everywhere and be their one-girl posse or something.

Heh, when I went to Amecon (thats a british convention) I got to meet Monica Rial (is that how you spell it?), she's in quite a few things like Pretear and Kiddy Grade among other things. She is simply one of the most amazing people I've ever met. She's so hyper and funny and kind all the time. Hopefully we'll be getting Greg Ayers next year, fingers crossed (Goku from Saiyuki)

I cosplayed Irvine from ff8 and it seemed that everyone else had the same idea so there were quite a few of us wandering around.

I'd love to meet Scott McNeil or Kirby Morrow. I remember when Scott was the voice of Flipshot in the New Adventures of He-man heh, heh. He does Logan in X-men: Evo at the moment (incidently Kirby Morrow plays Cyclops and previously Trowa from GW)

Anyway, I had a blast at that con, good times man, good times.

I went to the FX show recently , is not really an anime convetion per say but it brought japanese exports into the scene, I had a good time i guess thats the best thing that happened. I met one of the cast members from LOTR he was really cool :p. Afterwards we went to the anime exhibit in the marriot hotel and the only thing they where showing was a series i wasnt in the modd to see it so we left (okay so well my brother hates anime and i felt sorry for pushin him in so we left for that reason, I wanted to see it though :( ) So thats it!

Randomly, Greg Ayers is super cool XD I met him at Ckon in 2003 (and again at Acen in 04 XD; I feel like I'm stalking him!) He's such a nice guy~ I hope you get to see him too ^_^ and you spelled Monica Rial correctly *laughs*

And cons are so cool in general, it's hard to pick the coolest thing that's ever happened at one T_T

Maybe at Ohayocon this year XD I was Goku from Saiyuki and was constantly attacked by fangirls O_o but the coolest thing was people kept giving me random things! I totally didn't ask either *dies* I got free food and this really cool glowstick thing~ much fun ^_^ And people recognized me from other cons and kept calling me "that really good Goku with the plush Hakuryu" *laughs*
Either that, or meeting Greg Ayres at Ckon... he had a red mohawk (sp?) then~ Too cool XD he let me play with it~ *heart* currently, I think his hair is blue though O_o (and he totally recognized me from Ckon at Acen *squees* I am a happy fangirl~) Meeting Amanda Winn Lee then was pretty cool also... the only thing I knew her from was Rei from Evangelion, but she's so cute and hyper XD

Favorite anime convention memories. There are so many it is hard to think about them all. I had dinner with Rebecca Forstadt (VA in Robotech, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Cowboy Bebop) and met Richard Cox (VA for Ranma and Inu Yasha) and Miriam Sirois (VA for Akane Tendo in Ranma 1/2) at a private VIZ party. If anyone has the last box set of Ranma 1/2 on the extras they show clips from that party. That was really exciting.

But I would have to say that my favorite memory is from Anime Expo 2003. I am a big fan of Robotech and got to meet a bunch of the guys who work for Harmony Gold who I am a proud to say are close friends. One of the guys who I became friends with I think I talk to him on the phone about 4 days a week just to visit! It is very exciting to be on the "inside" of the company that made the series that got me into the anime fandom. That year I also won a life sized Lynn Minmei poster! I should have had Rebecca Forstadt sign it for me. Oops!

I am really looking forward to AX this year since it is also going to be the 20th anniversary of Robotech so they are throwing a con within a con. Robocon 20 is going on at the same time! Woo hoo! This is going to add more great memories. I love anime conventions.

Robocon sounds fun. But I think I have school. And I'm saving up for Otakon this summer. Last year, there was a Robotech/Macross forem. We discussed Macross, it's spin offs, the differences between it and Robotech, etc. I even got to see some footage from Macross Zero. And of course, the ever popular question "Veritech/Valkerie Vs. Gundam." Ooh, good question. Well, Veritechs/valkerines are smaller and faster, but Gundams have more firepower. It could be anyone's fight.

My friends and I used to to play the Robotech RPG from Palliduim books. It was alot of fun. We skipped Southarn Cross, and did a little of New Generation. We never got to Robotech II, or Macross II like I hoped. Well, keep sending in replies, everyone! And thanks again!

Otakon 2005 is coming up in four months. :D It's in Baltimore Maryland every summer. I've been looking forward to it all year. I hope that this years is as good as the last, or better. Who else is going? Have any of you been to Otakon before?

Dragonboym2, I combined your two replies because double-posting is against the rules. Should you wish to add something to your post, or if you absolutely must bump a reasonably recent thread, please delete your reply (presumably the last in the topic) and re-post it along with whatever else you wanted to say. Obviously this oughtn't be done in excess, but at least you won't be breaking the rules. Thanks! :animesmil

I'm only an hour or so (well, maybe more) away from Baltimore, so I'm actually thinking about attending Otakon this year. But at this point my summer schedule is kind of up in the air, which means I haven't yet made any definite plans. Still, it sounds like it could be fun.
