Morpheus
Are there any games that you feel were blown way out of proportion? I would say Halo. It is a great game. It just seems like everyone freaks out when something about Halo is said, and when I tried it, it seemed hollow. Bland if you will. I wondered why someone would pay $50 for this over a nice $10 used copy of Goldeneye. At my grandparents house, we could have any console we wanted. They have the money for a NeoGeo. But there sits, in front of the TV, an N64. With only one cartridge. My cousins and I wil gather in front of the TV, all eleven of us. We would start a match, and play until dawn. I really liked halo. I just liked it better when we called it goldeneye.
Sol-Blade
Fable wasn't the end-all RPG that everyone had hyped it up to be. Granted, Peter M. did some bragging of his own, only to cut a bunch of features out at the last quarter. Fable was a good game, it was a very good game. But when you look at what Fable was 'going' to be, and what it came out to be, it failed miserably.
NorykoAngelcry
Well, it seems like a few X-Box titles have come up short of what everyone was expecting from them. Fable, Halo and Halo 2 definitely top the list. As much as I enjoy Halo and Halo 2, I don't think I ever mentioned that I liked the 1-player story mode. I am only a real fan of the multiplayer mode. I mean, when I was in college a year ago, playing Halo's multiplayer mode with a bunch of people from different rooms was just awesome! Halo 2, keeps me in contact with my friends and family back home. . but I'm getting off subject. All of these games that I mentioned were way overhyped, including titles like Sudeki and Goldeneye 2 (and isn't it interesting that all of these are on the X-Box - ok, Goldeneye 2 was on PS2 and X-Box - lol) There are so many titles out there that have been overhyped before the real jury (the gamers) could really cast their own vote. There are also games that many may love, but I didn't really get into. .it's a big list that I don't think I have the time to go into. . ^_^
OtakuSennen
I'm probably going to get chewed out for this by a few people, but I've always felt that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was way overhyped compared to Majora's Mask. It is, of course, an amazing game, but the atmosphere and tension in MM always made me think of it in a more positive light than OoT. Collecting all the masks was more fun than any other side-quest in any Zelda game I've played. I dislike the Halo franchise, not because it's a horrible game, but because of how many people think it is the greatest thing ever created. The campaign modes in both Halo 1 and 2 made me want to fall asleep. The multiplayer saves it, though I still would never buy it. Thanks to the hype it received from Microsoft it's the only first person shooter a lot of people play, and so few people know about Half-Life or play The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. (Wow, I put down Ocarina of Time and Halo in the same sentence. There's probably a horde of angry fans with torches on their way to my house already.) Semjaza
Ocarina of Time was more hyped for reasons that I think just make sense. It was the first 3D Zelda, not to mention the first new one since Link's Awakening hit the Game Boy. While I think Majora's Mask is a better game personally, it's still a game that utilizes so many things that existed simply because of OoT. I don't think it was "overhyped" as much as Majora's Mask was underhyped because the N64 was slowly dying out. As for Half-Life... I think most people know about it, assuming they know anything about games outside of consoles. Hell, the first one sold two and half million copies by December 2000 (and who knows how many since then) and the sequel is nearing two million copies. Certainly not approaching Halo 2 numbers, but certainly not unknown.
Erika
Haha! Good one Sennen! XD Even if OoT is my favorite Zelda game, it's pretty refreshing to see a new perspective opposing the hype. ^_^ I agree on the Halo franchise. I watched a couple of my friends do the co-op campaigns, and I felt so bored with it that I layed down in my friend's lap just because I couldn't sit up and watch it. XD But once multiplayer came, I was disappointed with the controls. "Gotta get used to it." Yeah, well, I'm pretty adaptable, but that doesn't change the fact that I hate the controls. I get tired of hearing about Halo, Halo, HALO. My best friend's ex has an XBOX and only one game: Halo. Gimme a break. Then there's the sniveling anti-Nintendo fools who've never played a GCN "because it sucks", and if they had their way they'd wear Halo t-shirts, hats, underwear maybe. XD Yeah, things are usually overhyped for a reason, but I mean, people need to give it a rest [strike]every once in a while[/strike] for good. Now a game that I personally think is overhyped: Kingdom Hearts. I haven't beaten it yet, and I've had this game for a long time. I dunno, the storyline doesn't pull me in as much most others, and I shrug when people ask, "Don't you wanna know what happens/how it ends?" It was good, of course, and I need to get back into it to ready myself for KH2 this winter, but I mean, it's just...blah. It just doesn't pull me in, and it fails to beckon me. =P I just get tired of hearing about it, like FFVII, even though I love both games. It's just all old news to me I guess lol.
Morpheus
I really hated Kingdom Hearts. My friend told me that if I talked to everyone enough, I'd eventually get through it. But I'm not patient enough to go from random person to person trying to find something out. I dislike being drug in a straight story path(a la FF), but at least give me a frickin' hint. They told me to find Alice. You don't find Alice. So I'll change the advice to "Give me an real hint".
2010DigitalBoy
I thought Fable was a lot better than I thought it would be. I had never heard of it until it came out, and all I heard then was that it was overhyped and short. It is not short! I have 10 hours and Im like halfway through! Halo 2 was overhyped. I own it, I love it, I cant get enough of it, but its not as good as I wanted it to be. The Grand Theft Auto series is overhyped. I never wanted a PS2 just because GTA was stealing popularity from Nintendo. I think its okay, but it just isn't great. (I still secretely want San Andreas though ;) (takes out torch and chases down OtakuSenen)

Fable may not be short by action game standards, and though it's real-time it's still an RPG, and these games tend to be a lot longer. Casual gamers talk about sports games a lot. Too much, as far as I'm concerned. Never has a football game, a soccer game, or any other sports title (spare that recent Tiger Woods one, for whatever reason) caught my interest, and with a new one coming out every year, I'm not surprised. Maybe it's just personal preference making me biased, but when you have a new version of what is basically the same game ever year (this isn't really limited to sports games, either), things get tired. Quickly.

I don't think Ocarina of Time was overhyped -- it's a game that delivered several new benchmarks, in the same way that Mario 64 did. I think it would be hard to overhype Ocarina of Time. However, I do think that Majora's Mask was underhyped. That game deserved a lot more credit -- I know of a lot of people who have played OoT and who haven't touched Majora's Mask. What they may not realize is that Majora's Mask seems to blend so many of the series' best elements (ie: the wonderful control and gameplay of OoT combined with the dark and quirky atmosphere of Zelda II). In regard to Half-Life...well, specifically Half-Life 2, I think that the game has been overhyped to some degree, especially considering how long it took to make. However, I have to be honest in saying that it's one game that impressed me a lot in 2004. It definitely impressed me more than most games in recent times. And that's not just due to visuals; it's mostly due to the actual physical interaction in the game. That kind of interaction is something that few games seem to pull off so well, no matter how nice their visuals are. So I think Half-Life 2 definitely deserves most of the hype.

It seems like a real scam especially since the internet would conceivably allow you to download updated rosters. Its ok though, because most decent companies will make improvements yar after year as well, and the biggest thing with sports games is that you can (I can) play them way longer than any other game without getting tired of it. Theyhave the most replay value out of any genre basically because they are sports and every game is different. I think as far as PS2 goes GTA is overhyped. I really like the series and all, but each new game feels like more of the same with just bigger cities and more weird side things you can do. The novelty of running people down on the streets and killing cops or whatever wears out, but they never seem to fix a lot of the problems that the game has. You still have the same difficult control scheme that makes it tricky to shoot and fight etc. It still bothers me that if you roll over a car it explodes in 5 seconds. They add new stuff but rarely fix the old problems.
Morpheus
They(sports games) have the most replay value out of any genre
You are impossibly wrong. There is no one genre that tops all others in that catagory. I still play NBA Jam, Space Harrier, golden axe, streets of rage, street fighter 2, thunder force 2, tetris, dragon warrior, and enduro. Each are over 10 years old, but each are fun to this day. I would say the type of games that have the most replay value are the really GOOD games. 2010DigitalBoy
Morpheus, I think you should be a motivational speeker. That last line toughed me in a way that if a woman touched me that way I'd say yeah... thats nice. :) Anywho, I agree about a lot of what you guys are saying. As for Fable being short, if you do every last little thing it can span out to about 40 hours, and thats what Im doing. The main reason I take so long on Fable, though, is because I spend a lot of time doing unnecesary things, like traveling the world pointlessly.... Sports games are defeinetally overhyped. I have NCAA football and thats all I need for football. For basketball, I get NBA Street basketball v3, and thats it. Tennis? Mario Power Tennis had me hooked for a strait month. As soon as Mario baseball comes out my sports games will be maxed out. Also, if sports games are so replayable why make new ones?
Semjaza
I would say the type of games that have the most replay value are the really GOOD games.
This is a pretty arbitrary thing to say. I've played good games that I enjoyed greatly while they lasted, but there's nothing left to offer when they're finished. It's not as if "good games" are a genre as it is, so I don't see what's wrong with Satan665's statement. I don't even care for sports games and even I can agree that it's true for the most part. He wasn't going after other genres or older games.
PWNED
The most overhyped game I have ever played would have to be the Halo games. They are good shooting games but they have nicked elements from earlier games and are SOMEHOW praised to be the greatest games ever. Overhyped game 2 is Warcraft 3. It is somewhat lacking as a Multiplayer game when compared to one of the most innovative strategy games ever (Dugeon Keeper +DK 2) or the Total War series yet it is acknowledged as the greatest Strategy/ Multiplayer ever. These are just two overhyped games but there are more.
Zeta
Halo 2. The first was awesome in my mind, the second was blegh. I was hyped for this game beyond belief and was very dissapointed when I actually played it. Worst game for a console I have ever played. Not saying that it is a ****-poor game, because it is still a good game, but just hte worst of the games I have played. Get it? heh Graphics are belgh, cutscenes are choppy and textures dodgy, story is boring (I almost fell asleep a few times while actually playing). I just feel the game could have been so much better. They should have spent just as much time on the single player as they did with multiplayer. Some people don't like console games online, and some peoples parents won't use their credit card to order things and crap. I am both of those, heh. I'm going to wait for it to come to the PC like the first, and then I will play online. Better graphics for sure there. And I will be able to see the multiplayer for once, heh.
