FINAL FANTASY
Strayed Souls

Four souls, awaken from their eternal slumber, meet in a otherworldly dimension... One knows it as the Lifestream, to the other it is the Farplane, third thinks it is Heaven, but to the fourth it is just Hell... To those four souls appears a fifth one, who has lived a dozen lives but has yet to be born... The fifth has been given the task to guide the four through the strange realm of memories and prophecies... Together they will encounter lost friends and fallen foes, trying to seek out the ultimate truth behind this final fantasy...

Aside the Dante's Divine Comedy, this is a game that was inspired by the Soul of Rebirth feature in the recent remake game Final Fantasy I&II: Dawn of Souls. In that feature four characters that had lost their lives during the FF II game wake up in the Afterlife to mend something that has been left unfinished. This game has a similar type of idea, but instead of using characters from any one game, it combines at least four different games under one game. The point here is not to make one of those cheesy cross-over games where Cloud fights Squall and nothing makes sense. On the contrary, this game is trying to dig into the essence of what makes Final Fantasy games so fascinating and unique.

To be a part of this game, you will have to know your FFs, naturally, but I also require talent to ponder these things, and dedication to stick around. The players will have a huge effect on how the plot will advance, who they will meet in the Afterlife, and to what conclusion this all will end. Due to the game being so demanding, I have limited the amount of players, besides me, to four. The characters are predetermined, and won't be negotiated upon. One person can apply to as many of the four characters as they want, and it is recommended if there are many who want to play the same character, because naturally there can be only one player per one character.

The four playable characters are listed below. To apply, you have to write a detailed biography for the character(s) you choose, creating them a history from their birth up until the point where they die in their respective game. Because many things are left open in the games, you are encouraged to use your imagination to create for example a family and a hometown for your character, yet you have to be loyal to the original storyline that involved the character. I will make the final decision on who will get in after I've found a sufficient player for each character.

Enough said, here are the Four Souls:
Aeris Gainsborough (FFVII)
A heiress to an ancient race who gave up her life to save millions of others, but for some reason she was unable to merge to the Lifestream completely, and something of her remained alive.

Auron (FFX)
Warrior who lived half-life for ten years until his soul was released upon the destruction of the evil entity known as Sin. But the soul couldn't find peace afterall, and he was reborn in the Afterlife.

Raine Loire (VIII)
A strong-willed woman who protected her loved ones against the tyranny of the Sorceress Adel, and died while trying to hide them. However, her love kept her soul strong, and now she has arisen to face the truth.

Clyde "Shadow" Arrowny (FFVI)
Once a lowly rogue, then a notorious ninja, but ultimately he too sacrificed himself for a greater cause. Still, something was left unfinished, preventing him to find the eternal rest.
Here is my character, the fifth one who will act as a guide to the other four:
Cid (all/none)
A soul that has lived a dozen times in a dozen different dimensions, but at the same time it has never been born. He truly has the essence of mystery in him.
Here it is, apply well, and the journey to the Afterlife can begin!

Biography: Raine was born to a simple family in the small country town of Winhill, away from all the hustle and bustle of the city life like Esthar. Her mother worked hard at the bar that the family owned. They always had a lot of customers, but only at a certain time of the day, which was after working hours for the adults. A few of the men worked in construction, other men, including her father, worked the fields for the crops that they grew and sold. She loved her parents dearly and used to love to watch them work busily at the bar. Raine had lots of friends in the small town, some of them were the usual customers that visited the bar on a regular basis but the majority of them were the other kids that were often brought by their mothers so they could play and the adults would talk because there wasn't ever much business during the day time. Raine was a nice child and was so happy and carefree at such a young age, as a child should be.

She wished that they were allowed to wander outside of the bar, but the mothers always forbid them to, saying that there were lots of monsters out there, but all the times they had gone to see other families in the town, they hadn't seen any, so they assumed it was safe and that their mothers were only saying such things to stop them and were making things up.

One day when she was 7, when the mothers weren't looking, Raine and the group of kids went outside because they wanted to go see some of the flowers that grew in that time of the year. That was when they encountered a Caterchippilar, it sprayed its web on them, stopping them from escaping and it waddled over on it's short stumpy legs. They called for their mothers loudly, some of them were crying. Raine shouted for help and pulled at the web, only succeeding in getting herself stuck even more. Finally after loud high pitched shrieks did the mothers come out in a hurry, realising that the kids weren't in the bar area. They ran over and warded off the Caterchippilar with attacks that the children didn't know their mothers had. After it was driven away, they freed the children from the web and scolded them severly. They were all sent home and to their rooms without lunch.

After that it was the age for her to start her education and was sent to school. She met up with her group of friends there and they were always the best students in the class, always focussed on doing their work.

Nothing happened to her as she went through Primary Education, then through Secondary Education. The tragedy happened after she graduated from Secondary, her parents had been sick for some time but were still stubborn on running the bar, but Raine always helped, and had been helping since the middle of Primary. But it got bad, and she called a doctor because they were in bed with a cold sweat. He had to report the bad news to her and let her know that nothing could be done for her parents, it was too late for them...Raine was unwilling to accept the fact and ran out of the house/bar and went to her favourite spot, which was next to the flowers that bloomed differently each season. They had named them the Four Season flowers. She cried there for an hour, it couldn't be true that her parents were dying and nothing could be done for them. She returned to the house and promised to take care of her parents and the bar.

Her parents lived for another year before passing away. When it happened Raine was 18. She was so grief striken that her friends could do nothing to soothe the pain, even telling her that they knew how it felt didn't help. Because most of her friends' parents had died too. Raine didn't eat anything for an unhealthy period of time, she wasn't even able to be classified as alive because her eyes had gone hollow, lacking the usual vibrant sparkle in them; her skin had gone pale; her lips chapped and dry; her hair messy, opposite of her usually perfect hair; she had bags underneath her eyes, accentuating the sadness and lack of sleep she had; her eyes were puffy, red and bloodshot from the tears she cried day and night continuously. Her friends understanding what she was going through, took care of the bar and would always hear the soft sobs from the house area upstairs. Practically everyone from the town came on a regular basis to see if Raine's status had changed yet. Her friends were sad to make a negative report everytime.

Raine finally emerged after three weeks looking terrible and her friends jumped from wherever they were and mobbed her, asking if she was alright. Raine just shrugged them off and slowly started to eat again. Her friends were worried that she had a problem that no one yet knew of and decided to call a doctor just in case. The doctor came around and gave her a checkup, though Raine was reluctant to go through the process. She turned out to have a severe eating disorder activated by the death of her parents. But it seemed that she was coming out of it because she had resumed eating. It wasn't much, but was better than nothing at all. The doctor left telling Raine's friends, that if there's any change to let him know.

It took Raine another whole month before she was back to normal. Her friends were forever loyal and slowly helped her nurse herself back to good health, always keeping the doctor well in formed of changes. When Raine was back to normal, she was abnormally happy, and her friends were surprised when they entered the bar as usual to start work and find Raine behind the counter doing everything. They were worried and spoke to her, she said everything was fine. Raine had come to a conclusion, there was no point in staying in the past and contastantly grieving, her parents wouldn't have wanted that for her, and she remembered that she'd also promised to take care of the bar, and she would keep that promise, as it was the last one she made to her parents.

A couple of weeks after Raine got better, they had the funeral and all of Winhill went to the ceremony to say their goodbyes to the couple that had made their way into everyone's hearts through their kindness and for owning the famous bar that everyone went to. Raine gave a testimony for her parents and then they buried the bodies, the graves right beside each other. After that, Raine visited the grave with Four Season flowers each day.

Many of the old occupants of the town died from age and problems and the next generation took over all the businesses, being promoted from their worker spots. There was one particular mother, one of Raine's closest friends who had a child, a daughter in fact, and she decided to name her Ellone. Raine and their group of friends loved Ellone and thought she was adorable. But another death befell Winhill, as Ellone's mother was killed, trying to protect her from a monster that had gotten a hold of her. Soon the young girl found herself without a mother. The group of friends got together again and thought about what they should do with the poor girl. Sending her to an orphanage wasn't even a question, because most of them were in bad condition and the closest was a few towns/cities away. Most of the group were reluctant to take the child in, because a lot had husbands and were already pregnant. Raine loved the child and volunteered to adopt her, everyone seemed to agree with the decision and Raine took Ellone back to the bar, explaining that she was going to live with her now and that she'd take care of her. Ellone asked questions about her mother and Raine just told her that she had to go away.

Ellone officially became Raine's adopted daughter one week after the incident, when all the documents were signed and approved of. They had a strong bond and was more of a close sister relationship than mother and daughter, besides, Raine didn't want to intrude on her friend's motherly role, or the memories that Ellone still had. Raine sometimes got cross at Ellone for disobeying her, but tried not to be too harsh because she knew how it felt to be scolded strictly, and that made her rebel even more.

One dark stormy night, there was a loud knock at the door and Raine ran downstairs in her nightgown, she pulled open the door and saw a soldier, holding onto another who was slumped over.

"Please help, he was wounded in battle and this is the closest town and place." the soldier pleaded.

"Of course, come in out of the rain." Raine answered, letting them through into the bar.

The soldier lay the other down on the floorboards and Raine could see the blood stains on the uniform and the slice and holes in it that showed where the wounds were. Raine got towels, handing one to the conscious soldier, then drying off the unconscious one. Raine looked over him and saw that his leg was bent at an unnatural angle. After drying him and stripping him down to his undergarmants she got the soldiers help to carry him upstairs, putting him in the spare bed. She tucked him into the bed to make sure he didn't get a fever and let the weary soldier take a shower and use her bed for the night. Raine took their outer clothes and started a fire, putting the clothes at a proper distance to dry them off. She pulled out a spare blanket and pillow and set up a makeshift bed beside the fire and fell asleep. The next day the soldier had to leave to get back to the battle and thanked her, saying he'd be back for the other one. The day after the soldier left, the other woke and wondered where he was, then he stupidly tried to get out of bed and hurt his broken leg even more. Raine forced him to stay in bed and started to get to know him, discovering his name was Laguna Loire. It took a while but Raine stitched all of his wounds and set his leg in a cast, preventing him from doing much activity.

Ellone spent a lot of time with him and started to call him 'Uncle Laguna' in a playful way. It took a few months before Laguna was better, Raine just wished that there was another medic other than herself around, since the doctor died as well.

Ellone would joke that 'Uncle Laguna' and Raine should get married, and even though they knew she was joking, they were always embarrassed by that comment and would blush and one would leave the room, usually Raine.

Everyday Laguna would go out for 'Monster Patrol' which was the reason that allowed him to remain in the small town of Winhill instead of returning to the military. He carried his gun with him everywhere, everywhere except when he was with Ellone, because he didn't want her exposed to such things.

But slowly, Ellone's 'joke' pulled through and Raine and Laguna fell in love. They didn't get married yet, but Laguna gave her a ring on the correct finger and promised that they would. Little did they know that that would never come true. For a month later, Ellone was taken away by Esthar soldiers because of her powers. When Ellone was playing in the bar, Raine was cleaning glasses, a group of Esthar soldiers rushed in through the door and spotted the little girl. The one who seemed like the leader shouted a bunch of stuff to the others and pointed at Ellone, some went over to Raine. The group near Ellone picked her up and turned to carry her out the door, Raine let out a cry and tried to rush forward, trying to stop them.

"Stop! What are you doing? Put Ellone down!!!" she cried.

"Raine!!!!!!" Ellone cried as she was carried out the door, while Raine had her arms held behind her back tightly. They both had tears running down their cheeks. When the soldiers with Ellone had gotten away safely, the leader signalled to those holding Raine. They pushed her roughly behind the bar and left quickly.

When Laguna returned from 'Monster Patrol' about 10 minutes later, he found Raine at the bar crying, he asked what was wrong and Raine told him what had happened. He was shocked and angered, he couldn't believe that soldiers had kidnapped Ellone. Laguna decided to leave Winhill to go find her and bring her back. He promised that he'd return safely with Ellone and then they'd get married. Raine reluctantly let him go, and watched as he ran off into the night with his gun.

Raine conceived during the time that Laguna was gone, as soon as she discovered she was pregnant, she called her friends and asked them to be her midwives, since she was the only medic in the town and she couldn't do it on her own. They agreed happily and swarmed her constantly. Most of them already had their own kids and knew what it was like. Raine realised she greatly disliked being pregnant when she constantly had to run upstairs and throw up in the toilet while working. After a month of doing so, her friends made her stay upstairs and not work because it was bad for the baby, as Raine used to tell them when they tried to do work. Raine glared playfully at her friends but agreed, and she sat in bed everyday while her friends took turns taking care of the bar and watching over her.

Six months later, Raine went into labour, and Laguna and Ellone still hadn't returned. Everyone including Raine was worried, because she was two months premature. Her water broke and she was soon sweating heavily. All her friends had left the bar and were surrounding her. Raine felt pain that wasn't supposed to be there, it was worse than labour pain. When she had fully dilated, she started to push, taking patterned breaths and pushing. She felt her head hurt and she was starting to lose consciousness. Raine fought to stay conscious and continued to push out the baby. Finally it emerged and Raine saw it was a boy. She looked into his eyes and saw they were a stormy bluish grey and decided to name him Squall. Then she passed out. Her friends at first thought she was just so tired she was sleeping, but they didn't hear her breathing, they quickly jumped and checked her pulse, but it was gone, she was dead, right after giving birth to baby Squall. They were saddened because she had been everyone's best friend, and she and Laguna had never gotten married as they had promised each other.

A week later, they conducted another funeral, burying her beside her parents.

Name: Clyde 'Shadow' Arrowny

Age: He would not know.

Weight: 145

Height: 5'11"

Occupation: A sly rogue.

Biography:

Sweet Origins

This man lived in a world divided by modern and traditional conflict. As the older powers from distant lands struggled to keep up with the technological race of Magitek, they isolated themselves, looting other powers for the security of their own.

He lived only in a present world, surrounded by warped and surreal memories that may or may not have been true, yet he had no reason to argue otherwise that this really was his past. Despite the disturbing images and visions he acquired through slumber or other forms of un-consciousness.

The man's father was a drunk. It was almost a routine for him to stumble home from the Synthice* Inn, breath smelling profusely of ale, and for him to, uninhibited by the alcohol, to choose his sexual victim. The man's mother was terminally ill, and his sister would of been only nine at the time, yet this did not act as a hindrance to the father's sexual drive. In fact, it was said that the father even tried to rape him when he sent his mother to a neighbour and his sister to the church.

The man went by the name of Clyde Arrowny. His surname originated from his mother's maiden name, striving for any attempt to avoid being associated with his abusive father. He often tended to the crops of the Old Farmer's* unsettled land, for it was good money, especially when a town is situated in the mountains, and he was thought of as a good-hearted, confident, if not closed at times, young boy. He had everything going for him until the unit arrived.

The unit consisted of about six men, each with the task of exterminating any deserters*, for Synthice was renown for it's stubbornness in joining any foreign war, especially for Imperial Powers. They rode in very alien vehicles. Mechanical seats with legs almost, and two chain-gun turrets on either arm-rest, that would fire ten bullets in under a second. (Magitek had not yet been developed enough for minimal use, it was thought of as too dangerous.)

At first, all was peaceful - The town would house the soldiers within the tavern, and would constantly keep up the unknown front of any deserters. In fact, Clyde almost rejoiced in the Unit's presence, for his drunk father and two companions would always be found unconscious in an alleyway after a nightly brawl with the trained soldiers. That was until the Unit lost their patience.

On one fateful morning, the townspeople were gathered up, including Clyde but not his father for he was asleep, into the mayor's house. It was declared that due to no one coming forth and cooperating, they would all be exterminated. One man who was remembered as McFly asked why, and two whole clips from each Unit-soldier were unloaded upon him, the barrels still rotating as what was left of his mangled corpse fell to the ground. "This will be the first. You cannot escape. Move in."

Within minutes the droning of high-flying airships could be heard. And then the whistling. And then the deafening booms.

Throughout all the chaos of the aerial bombardment, and as the people rushed around in desperation, Clyde took it upon himself to drive a dagger into his burnt father's dying body, just as his mother and sister laid under the rubble next to them.

Clyde fled, and the town was flattened in less than a minute.

--------

"Hold it." Spoke a spiky-haired man, who's attire consisted of an eye-patch, the odd scar on his face, bulky-shoulder pads, and tattered navy robes. He wielded a pistol with both hands comfortably, aimed directly at the coal-feeder's head.

The train was still steaming after it's sudden halt, and it's workers were all lined up in front of the five horsemen, all wielding different forms of firearms.

"Wh-wh-what do you want from us?" Nervously asked the plump warden.

"Whatever you have." Replied the spiky-haired man, handsomeness resounded from his face and figure, regardless of his motives. "Got anything worth at least a Gil?"

"No..." Declined the stuttering plump man, who seemed to value his possessions more than his life.

"What's that?" The spiky-haired man replied, swiftly changing targets with his gun.

"Wait!" Shouted out the driver, coal and dust smothered his shirt. "We've got some original paintings in the back."

The rogues' horses 'neighed' and rose up in amusement at the sudden change from rebellion to compliance, whilst the train-men looked at the crying driver in disgust.

"Excellent." Responded the spiky-haired man in a lighter voice. "Boys. Go get em'."

As the rogues dismounted and began to approach the train, the plump man quickly fumbled in his pockets and lobbed a round trinket towards the group, a tinkling sound emitted as it fell upon the golden, dry land. "Clyde, look out!"

Boom.

As he came to, surrounded by black smoke, heat and chaotic dust, Clyde found the plump man above him smirking. "We've heard about you riders. Comin' and goin', lootin' and killin' who ya' please. Goodbye rogue."

"I have a name."

"A name!? Ha! You're not even a being. You're just a shadow."

Smack.

--------

It was on that encounter in the Inn that changed Shadow?s life forever.

Even though the group continued to pester him for his help in their fight against Kefka, Shadow remained by his only care in life, money. Yet, even though the group were not aware of it, Shadow would be following them everywhere they went.

In many instances, he would?ve fought alongside them. Whether it be against the Imperial Troops who were created as soon as Kefka gained enough influence throughout the world, or during Edgar?s plight upon the ghost-train, of which he viewed his family journeying to the Underworld. But Shadow would ensure he made a hasty escape at the most inappropriate of times.

It was when he, and his trusty canine companion, finally created a sense of permanence and security, that he journeyed with the group, nearing the end of their quest to rid Kefka of the world for good.

The group had underestimated the power of Kefka?

The group were facing their bitter end?

Shadow truly came out of himself to become an actual person once more?

With a sacrifice?

His life.

?Is this Hell??

*Synthice was a bustling, yet unknown, town situated in the Green Plains of the Northern mountains.

** Deserters were people who either refused to fight when drafted, or who fled the battlefield as soon as conflict arose. This was thought upon as unacceptable cowardice.

You've both made great entries, Zid and Ohkami, but I fear that this board might have too few people who're interested in this game...

But I'm not going to throw in the towel just yet; let's see this through the weekend, and hope at least one other person will sign up. I still believe this game has much potential.
