Mine would have to be good ol' Fallout 1 & 2 for the PC. Lots of customization and freedom to do whatever you want, and a nice post-apocalyptic storyline and setting. Though i still do like japanese style RPGs like the Final Fantasy series (i've played FF5-FF10), the open-ended style gameplay of fallout wins me over. As for Fable on the xbox, that game is pretty on the surface but theres a real lack of depth to it and no replay value whatsoever, i really wouldnt recommend it.

I actually have two favorite RPGs. The first one is a classic for PS1, which is Star Ocean 2. I beat the game a long time ago, but it was the most fun game I had on PS1. Sadly, I find Star Ocean 3 a little less attractive than the second for some reason. Anyways, the next RPG is a little more new. Morrowind for the Xbox and PC. The most non-linear and realistic RPG I've ever played. The only problem is that it is very buggy, as an important character disappeared, leaving me unable to continue on the main quest... :animeangr

My favorite RPG is Phantesy Star Online episode 1&2

Its a truly great multiplayer experience for all to enjoy. I mostly reccomend it to anyone just beggining in RPGs. Ther eare plenty of enemies and the environments change between 2 or 3 variations each time you play, and the game offers enough challenge and lack of repitivity to keep it interesting.

My favorite RPG would have to be Terranigma.

It's a little known action RPG for the SNES, never released in America... though, it was released in english over in Europe.

The game is simply amazing. The story is one of the most unique one's I've ever had the pleasure of reading, and the characters are far from your static, cookie cutter characters that the FF games, and most other RPGs, give you. Also, the music is just... wow... every song is good, and every song fits the moment just perfectly. The game play is fun, and interesting, and there's enough variety that you never really get bored. There are a ton of side quests to do, and the story is deep enough that you can get different meanings from it each time. And, for the SNES, the graphics a very nice, and polished; it looks almost like a sprite based PS1 game.

My favorite RPG is, strangely enough, Lufia: The Legend Returns for GameBoy Color. It wasn't that popular of a game methinks, but I've still had a lot of fun with it.

The plot is pretty good, similar to it's predecessors. The dialogue isn't that great, but I don't mind that so much.
It's a relatively challenging game the first time through, when you're still getting used to everything. The hardest part of the game would have to be a tie between when you fight the Egg Dragon, and when you go through all 200 levels of the Ancient Cave and fight the boss at the end.

There's a lot of characters to choose from, 12 in all, and you can keep 9 in battle at one time. Technically, you can only have 3 fight each turn. The characters don't have much depth to them, most of them fit a certain stereotype. On top of that, some of them aren't even worth using in battle.

So, why do I like this game then?

Well, there are quite a few cool battling techniques in the game, that you can learn using Ancient Texts. Most of them are, admittedly, not worth learning sometimes, but there are some really cool ones, like I said.
Since there are so many characters to choose from, you can have whole different strategies whenever you replay it. Plus, the Ancient Cave sidequest is quite challenging, and I like the song they play in the ending credits of the game. ~.^

Maybe to most people, this was a mediocre game, but I still replay it quite often.

While it's not my FAVORITE RPG, I really do have to agree with you here. I'm not quite sure what draws me back to the game... maybe it's the way you can play through each and every battle COMPLETELY different every time, since you have a large number of characters on the field at any given time, the Ancient Cave, or some kind of deep rooted love for the game that I'm not willing admit.

Even though the dialouge is horribly cliche and corny at times, you can't tell me you didn't get a kick out of it when Gades says he has "Frue" power.

Not enough people give Lufia: TLR enough credit. Yeah, it's no Lufia II (Another AMAZING game), but it has it's points.

I guess I'd have to say FF7. It was the very first game I got on the PSX, and it's what got me into playing RPG's, and the FF series! I was so amazed - a game with a real story (up until then all I had played were Mario, StreetFighter and Scrolling Beat 'em up's). I still have "fond" memories of staying up until about three in the morning trying to beat that robot with the arms in the submarine loading bay. First time around playing, that guy gave me a real headache!

Sure, only this morning, I was on the bus remembering how one gets Yuffie to join the team. Ah, hidden characters, where have ye gone?

My Favourite RPG would definetly have to be Gensou Suikoden 1 or its Sequel, Gensou Suikoden 2. Sure in the graphics department they are no FF 10 and seeing that Suikoden 1 was possibly the first RPG that was worth buying on the PSX does mean something. its just that the games are victims of the FF Hype. The FF Hype is when the games fall victim of being released around the same time as the FF Games. Suikoden 2 , Argubaly having one of the greatest strorylines I have ever seen in an RPG, was released one week before FF 8.

Konami really needs to get it straight that not only do they create the best stealth and horror games (Metal gear Solid and Silent Hill respectivly) as well as one of the best Side Scroller Series (Castlevania) but they have the RPG series that have the most characters you can have on your side on Average (At Least 108 minus the Extra Stars of Destiny), A Fun Old School Battle System ( No ATB, Purely Character Speed-Based with Up to Six a Side) and It doesn't overdo it with the frickin Cut Scenes (Sorry Natchan but I have to use FF8 as the base of this point, So bloody many unnescersary Cutscenes in one game). Suikoden 1+2 are both RPGing Goodness that stack up to the greats like FFs 6+7, Grandia and Baldurs Gate(I know, PC RPG, So sue me).

My fav. is definitely FF IX.
It was the first in the FF serie's I've ever bought and cleared ^^'
When I first played the game, I reached the final boss without the knowledge that Weapons contained abilities ^^' how dumb is that?
After that I replayed it for like a thousand times and it never gets boring. great music, great story and really really loveable characters!
Dagger and Zidane as a couple are soo cute :3

Dragon Warrior 7!

Just one interesting adventure after the next. I can't think of any other RPG that kept me so constantly interested and challenged. Really, I'm much of an RPG purist, I like big difficult dungeons and fighting thousands of random encounters, doing fetch quests and endless puzzles.. DW7 just has more of this than any other RPG. Am I saying quanity over quality here? Well almost. RPG's are typically very long games so quanity is an issue; DW7 is hardly repetitive because it involves a lot of different stories and settings. Everything in this game gets increasingly complex; I'd say by the end it's at a level no other RPG has been in... Most people who don't like this game simply haven't played it start to finish.

I know it sounds dull, perhaps, but I have to go with Final Fantasy VII, for mostly the same reasons as stated by other people above.

It might be the fact that I haven't played that many RPGs outside the FF-series, but I can't think of any game even outside the whole genre that could beat the amazing storyline and depth that FF7 has. Sure, it was my first RPG as well, but I think I would've felt the same way about it even if I had played other RPGs before it.

Just for the heck of it, here's the list of the RPGs I've played:
Playstation:
Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8, 9
Playstation 2:
Final Fantasy 10-2
Unlimited Saga (for 5 hours, but I might play it more someday... It's just so effing bad!)
Gameboy Advance:
Pokémon Sapphire (you count it as an RPG, don't you?)
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Golden Sun: the Lost Age
Final Fantasy 1&2: Dawn of Souls
PC:
Grandia 2

These are the games I have played through, or at least owned. I've of course tried out various demos of other RPGs, like Diablo, but action-based (or hack&slash based, what ever you want to call it) roleplaying is not my cup of lemon tea. As you can see from the list, it is pretty dominated by the FF-series, but I still claim that it is the best of them all!

However, I'm planning to buy Shadow Hearts Covenant when it reaches this corner of the world, just because I've heard so much good about it, so maybe it will change my opinion (although I doubt it...). Disgaea is also in my target, I'm just waiting for the price to go below the obnoxious 65 ?!

It's been getting good reviews overall. You might enjoy it. Personally, I think it's just below mediocre.

Now, tell me. Why would you not? Is it an FPS? Is it an action game? Puzzle game? Arcade game? An RPG like any other? Nay, nay, nay, nay, and yay.

I would be utterly tripped out on bliss if they released the Super Famicom Dragon Quest games in NA on a collection disc (or discs), similar to FF Anthology and all those. ^_____^

My favorite RPG ever? OMG, it's NOT FFVII!!!!1 O,O; It's Tales of Symphonia! YES. That game is awesome!!! My only complaints are is the lack of emotion in it, and there's
only one cutscene in the whole frigging game, other than the intro and endings.
But everytime the word "RPG" comes to mind I think of that game, or the whole Tales series to be frank.

That whole game is an audio visual feast. I suck it all up like a sponge. I love the huge worlds and hours I can rack up by just playing through it. The characters and voice-acting are all just magnificent. =D

That's a good way of summarizing it. Heh, just talking about it makes me wanna go and replay the game again.

XD That was pretty funny. I can't believe they let so many misspellings slip by, but oh well.

True, it may not be Lufia II, but it's still addicted at times.

Mine would probably be either Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy IV. It's a hard choice. ... I like them both for about the same reasons, and I don't think I've really played one more than the other.

First off, for Chrono Trigger, I really liked the battle system. Double and triple tech moves really added a lot to the game, especially when you're trying to balance healing with dishing out damage. Do you go for that awesome triple tech move and hope you can survive long enough to heal next round? Heal with one character, and do a less powerful double tech with the other two? Or maybe heal with one, and just wait till that single character is available again to do the triple tech. If you plan your moves and timing well, you can do some crazy stunts in battle -- I'll never forget the time I pulled off four consecutive triple techs against the end boss without getting hit until after the fourth one went off.

Second, I can't help but take an interest in most of the game's characters. Especially Frog and Magus' whole story, and how you can actually have Frog
avenge Cyrus by killing Magus (that was an awesome 1-on-1 fight), or put aside the grudge and let Magus join your party.
And even though Crono never actually speaks, I sort of became attached to him. I was really shocked and devastated when I realized
he was actually dead. A bit of the thoughts that ran through my mind went something like, "He can't die. He's freaking Crono, damnit!"
Not many other RPGs have characters that I take as much of an interest in as I did with Chrono Trigger's.
Sorry for all the spoilers, it's just that all the best bits involving the characters' stories kind of give stuff away.

Third, the story in itself I also find to be pretty interesting. Yeah, it is another "save the world" story, but it's not too terribly cliche in the way you go about it. And there are a fair number of twists and turns to keep the game alive and interesting for at least a dozen hours. Not all that long compared to some more recent RPGs, but still a decent length; quality over quantity and all that.

As I said, I like FFIV for much the same reasons, but in its case, I rate the characters higher than the battle system. Cecil, the main character, remains to this day my favorite character from any RPG. I really like his personality, and he isn't one of those invincible badass characters (i.e. Cloud). And the rest of the game's main cast are all at least interesting/funny (well, except maybe Edward), without having too many cliched stereotypes. It's fun just to watch the characters interact with one another (Edge and Cid, anyone?).

The battle system is the solid ATB system used in FFIV-FFIX, so no complaints there. Not incredibly interesting after using the same system in so many games, but it works, and unlike some later FF games, FFIV's difficulty actually makes you work for your victories. The main fun I get out of the battle system anymore is trying to find little strategies that get me out of each battle with as little HP/MP loss as possible.

Just reread the paragraph on Chrono Trigger's story in place of this; I find each about as enjoyable as the other, for basically the same reasons.

Ha, wow, it's pretty refreshing to see a nice mix of RPGs named. Usually people just argue over which Final Fantasy is best lol. It's kind of refreshing to see people choosing a bunch of different games. :)

I don't know what my absolute favorite RPG is, but my recent favorite is Skies of Arcadia: Legends for the GameCube. At the time I'd just been playing a bunch of RPGs that were nothing but "angst, angst, ANGST!!11!11" and it was getting really tiresome lol. Skies of Arcadia is really refreshing, in that aspect, because its characters are very upbeat, but not to the point where you'd say "What are these losers smoking? "

While the game's story isn't exactly original, or anything, it still makes for a really fun time, and gives you ample reason to want to play through the game. Plus, it centers around pirates and airships. What's not to love about that? Pirates in airships > pirates in regular ships.

The battle system is solid, too. There are a few too many cheap one-hit kill spells for my liking, but luckily, there are ways to defend against that. There are a nice assortment of different spells, attacks, and whatnot for the characters to learn, too. Also, the airship battles are pretty fun.

I can't answer this as easily as I should be able to. Nothing really just jumps to mind as a favorite... I'm probably best off dividing up by generation.

8-Bit: Dragon Warrior IV - One of the best games in the series, although I have a hard time giving this a nod over DWIII. I think what separates this is that it's the series first real foray into developing the characters more beyond their starting roles. The Chapter system was incredibly interesting and pretty original at the time. Plus, I'd have to say it has the best ending of any NES games I know of.

16-Bit: Earthbound - A lot of people don't understand the love Earthbound gets from its crazy fans. I don't know that I can really explain it myself. The game was just such a massive breath of fresh air at the time and even if it was first released today, I think it still would be. The characters were quirky and interesting, the enemies were bizarre, the locales were fun. I loved how it was based on this wholesome version of mid-1900s America in a way, but with its own weird twist.

32-Bit/64-Bit: Persona 2: Eternal Punishment - The original Persona: Revelations is rather archaic, although still an excellent game if you were willing to give it the time. Persona 2 ups it in every single aspect, however, from graphics to story to characters. First person dungeons were replaced by third person ones, although they were no less mazelike. It's probably the most mature RPG on the system, in the sense that it actually has a lot going for it in terms of an adult-themed storyline. Still, it's very attached to a hardcore RPGer stigma and I doubt it would appeal to everyone.

Current Gen: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - An amazing game in every sense. Certainly flawed, but everything it does right makes up for it. This is the first RPG of this generation that I really got into (I won't count Skies of Arcadia, since I played that first on DC - excellent game though). It's not for everyone. There's lots of experimenting, leveling up and dungeon crawling... but if you want to, there's a lot of interesting things to uncover and study upon. I think the most interesting aspect of it is really that you get as much back as you put into it. Amazing sense of style too, particularly in some of the cutscenes that use an excellent sense of color and lighting.

Handhelds: Dragon Warrior III - One of the NES's best RPGs redone with further story, new quests, new items and better graphics. I absolutely loved this and I still think it's the best RPG on the handheld.

PC: Fallout - I never enjoyed the second one as much, but the original was awesome. I enjoyed basically every aspect of it. People should hunt it out, most places have both games together for $10 new.

Well, I was happy to see Fallout mentioned here. I loved both 1 and 2, more on two though. I spent contless hours with this game and have been thinking of playing it again recently. I saw it sitting there in my case and just thought *hey this would be nice to play again*.

but anyways, others I have enjoyed are morrowind for the PC and Fable for xbox which I am playing recently. I love Fable. I have played through it once already just completing the main quest. Now Im going back through, playing the evil side, and trying to get all the smaller quests and secrets that are in the game.

I havent really played too many other rpgs since I dont own a PS2 (kinds shocking huh lol), but I plan on getting one and then might have some more to list later.

Chrono Trigger, hands down. I don't think I really need to explain it. . .I think if you pick this game up and play it, it will explain it to you.

Another game worth a mention that I think is heavily underrated is Parasite Eve. . .I love this game to death and I've had this hankering to play it lately.

Here's an old review I did for PE:
This game's just really different, and I like that. It's a horror game, sort of, but it's also an action game, sort of, and it's also an RPG, sort of. It's mix of a lot of great elements from a lot of genres into one completely original, creative, innovative package.

In the game you play Aya Brea, a cop in New York city. In the opening of the game, it's Christmas, 1997, and a cinematic scene opens, and we come to Aya standing outside Caranagie Hall, going on a date to the opera.

When she gets into the opera, another cinematic starts. It's this beautiful woman singing, in that opera way, but then, suddenly, things start on fire around her. The curtains go aflame--people start aflame--it all starts burning. But Aya is somehow immune to what is going on.

Eventually, you approach this opera singer, and then you get into a boss fight with Eve.

From there, the game spans 6 days, where Aya must save New York.

The game has a very good graphical look for it being just a PS title, the music is good, the battle system is different--you have PE points (magic) and you can use that, and you move around open-endedly during battles, and attack once your AT gauge is full--it has an interesting weapon system, where you can make your own weapons and add special abilities to them, the same with armor.

The game takes about 15 hours to beat, but then you can play an EX game, and also there's the Chrysler Building. This thing you can only enter after you've done an EX game, but it's about 100 floors of hell, on each 20 or whatever floor, there's a boss. And of course, there's the last boss, which after beating you get a new cinematic which I've never seen because I've never made it through the whole goddamned thing--it's so hardcore.

Plus, it's really hard in the Chrysler Building. You have to play through the game a few more times before you stand a chance. And the Chrysler Building is also really frustrating--the floors are randomly generated, and are full of dead ends. It's a veritable maze, and takes a lot of patience to get through every floor--but it's a nice added feature.

From the reviews I read, people seem to think the game is short. Well, then there's the Chrysler Building, plus there's the fact that this game is so great that I don't care about going through it all again--it's that goddamned fun to me. So basically, these reviewers were too harsh on this game.

This game has nice production values. A different, interesting splicing of many genres all put together. It has amazing music. It has horror elements. It has hard bosses. It's moderately difficult. The graphics are good for a pre-PS2 game. The characters sparkle with characterization, and you actually care for them. The weapons system--how you can use weapons and customize them--is very fun. It has the Chrysler Building, 100 floors of hell. It has the EX game. It has beautiful cinematics. It has an interesting story.

And yet reviewers don't seem to see what I'm seeing. Ah well.

If you can find it anywhere, get this game. E-bay whatever. It's worth it, trust me, if you give it the chance. And if you don't like it as much as me, at least you'll somewhat be fond of it.

I think this is a game that is heavily underrated, that needs to get into people's hearts like some other games do. . .well, at least that's what it's like for me. Perhaps I just have something for this game, but it's definitely stayed with me for a while.

There's also Parasite Eve II for the PS, as well. I'm planning on getting a copy of that if I can eventually, with the money I make from my job. I've wanted to play that for a while, and from what reviews I've read it improves on what people thought was wrong with the original PE.
Since then I have played PE II a bit. . .it will never be as good as PE but it's pretty good nonetheless.

Also, I've always wanted to play Fallout. I should reall nab a copy of it.
