James
It looks like 2005 is going to be a pretty good year for movies. Already, there are quite a few that I'm looking forward to. I thought this thread would be a good opportunity to share your thoughts on this year's upcoming films and to talk about what you're most looking forward to. I'll get the ball rolling. Note: Each icon/poster links to the trailer page for each film. So if you are curious, you can just click the posters to view the relevant trailers. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Directed By: Tim Burton For me (and for those of you who loved the novel), this one surely has to be a no-brainer. It's based directly on the book (it even shows how Wonka found the Oompa-Loompas, which the original movie didn't). And of course, it contains the visual talent of Tim Burton and combines that with the acting talent of Johnny Depp. It was reported that Marilyn Manson was originally slated to play Wonka (which would have been fantastic), but Depp will apparently be basing Wonka off Manson, in terms of mannerisms and so on. I think that's most cool, afterall, Wonka is a pretty twisted guy -- particuarly in the novel. I tend to think that Burton and Dahl are pretty similar people in terms of their views on children's fiction, so I'm really hoping for the best with this release. Corpse Bride Directed By: Tim Burton This one's been a long time coming. It's nice to have two big Burton films in one year. And this would have to be my second most-wanted, I'd say. The story seems pretty cliche, to some degree, but it looks like it'll be a great deal of fun. The trailer really seems to be filled with Burton's humor and the cast is going to be ideal for this film. It's also great to see a return to stop-motion animation (even though it could be argued that this movie could have been done just as well with CGI). The sheer fact that it is using such an incredibly laborious and difficult animation process is part of the charm, I think. Definitely something to watch out for. The Ring Two Directed By: Hideo Nakata There's a bit of back story to this one. The Ring, as you all know, was based on Ring (but for clarity's sake, I'll call it "Ringu"), the Japanese horror film. The Ring had a noteably different story and contained elements of Ringu 2. Ultimately it came out pretty well and managed to work well against the original. So when it came time to do The Ring 2 (and without Gore Verbinski, the original director), two things became apparent. One, the movie would need a new story and two, it'd need a new director. Several directors were passed over and eventually, Hideo Nakata himself took the helm. Nakata is the man who created the original Ringu movies (which themselves are based on a Japanese novel). Nakata successfully blended elements of Japanese mythology into the story, while combining that with unique modern elements (ie: television/video tape). So, Nakata was chosen to direct The Ring 2. If you've seen the trailer, you can probably tell that the movie is already visually different from Verbinski's effort. However, even with a small budget on the Japanese films, Nakata managed to create some very frightening and disturbing sequences (note the ending of the Japanese film versus the American film -- big difference, with the Japanese version being a lot more disturbing). Considering what he can do with a small budget, one can only wonder how well he'll do with a much bigger budget. Add Naomi Watts to the formula (who really made the original what it was -- without her I doubt it'd have been as enjoyable) and you have a recipe for success. Fingers crossed for this one. Anyway, those are probably my three big ones. But there's definitely more. I'll give it a rest for the moment though, so you guys can make your own suggestions -- I'm sure there are plenty of movies that some of you can talk about in more detail (ie: Sin City, Star Wars III, etc...)
Dagger
I've been too caught up in the newest season of anime to educate myself about upcoming live-action films. However, I sincerely hope that 2005 will turn out to be a better year for movies than 2004. The only title I've taken serious notice of is one you mentioned--Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Johnny Depp is lovely, of course, but I would have killed to see Manson as Wonka. The trailer I've seen looks dazzling, with some really great use of color. How did the Japanese version of the first "Ring" movie end? ~Dagger~
Zeta
Ring Two is the one I am really looking forward to. The first scared the bageezes out of me. I have't squealed like a girl in a long time. I squealed like a schoolgirl in that movie. The trailer for this movie scares the bageezes out of me. Episode III. Oh man. The mother of all movies for me. I have been waiting for this movie for a long, long time. I am a die hard Star Wars fan, so this hits it close to home. I loved the Original Trilogy, as well as the prequels. Episodes I and II aren't as good as the OT, but I hope Episode III can blow tall the Star Wars out of the water. The small behind the scenes tid bit on the OT DVDs looks very, very promising. Semjaza
Mine are just James's first two: Corpse Bride and Willy Wonka. I originally found out about Corpse Bride from some old internet article that had a magazine scan. Months and months ago. It's nice that there's finally more out about it. I love stop motion animation and I love NMBC so it's been at the top for awhile. I imagine Henry Sellick is doing this too, but I don't know offhand. As for Wonka, I'm looking forward to it. The book is darker than the film as it is and I'd like to see what might be changed. I'm also interested in seeing what might be in the film that wasn't included from the book in the orginal. The kids in the original were largely annoying, fodder (I hated Charlie, honestly), so I'm hoping that's improved.
Morpheus
Elizabethtown, simply because it's the name of my town. As you see the opening, you will see the town square of my town(beautified, of course) including the old courthouse. It is a very congested circle, which I'm sure Cameron has worked around. I'm really excited to see exactly how he did it. Also, one of my best friends and a few others from my school were extras. It's really surreal. eleanor
The Brothers Grimm Simply because my dear Mr.Damon is in it. [blush] Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is another I'm looking forward to, the only reason being that I loved the book and Raold Dahl in general. :) Though I must say Johnny Depp was a very nice choice for Willy Wonka...that mad man. ._. He really does just scare me sometimes. Brokeback Mountain. Stop. First of all, I didn't pick this movie just because it's about two gay guys...played by two very Hollywood-famous-good-looking-guys. Ok. Yes, I did. :3 But I do wonder if it will suffer just because it's about a gay relationship (no more of the subtle context...very blatant gayness here) or how its criticism will go. But of course, I can't help but think it will be a crappy movie in terms of just how well movies are made. Just my intuition, here. Star Wars: Episode III is a given. Please don't take this and assume that I think the two recent Star Wars were good movies. They weren't. But I guess I'm still looking forward to this one because it has the words 'Star Wars' in it. And if Clint Eastwood is making a movie and/or if Tim Robbins/Edward Norton are going to be in a movie, I'm looking forward to it.
Semjaza
Oh, I completely forgot Constantine. I'm really looking forward to this because I enjoy the Hellblazer comics. I just hope it turns out. Keanu Reeves somehow manages to get into mostly decent movies as of late, although I still don't really like him as an actor... he's probably my biggest "if" of the film. Gavin
Interesting, most interesting. Two words: Episode III, this is probably my sole reason for going to the cinema intentionally this year, well maybe not sole but definitely one of the main reasons. Though the New Trilogy has been a bit of a let down so far, although it has had it moments, I do hope that Revenge of the Sith will bring back some of the Star Wars magic to the series. The Bourne Ultimatum: The spy series that blows every James Bond film out of the water [except maybe GoldenEye] in terms of action, intrigue and sheer enjoyability. From what I remember from a thread on the Bourne series the final instalment is meant to turn everything you thought you knew about the series on it's head. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, I heard about this one from Alex and then went on and did a bit more research at MovieTome, although Alex did provide more info. The film premise is definitely interesting and the cast of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is something to raise an eyebrow in intrigue over. Doukeshi
I'm looking forward to: Mr and Mrs Smith - I just really want to see the interaction between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and the plot looks very interesting. What I've been told about it makes it out to be a semi-fun semi-serious sort of movie and I just can't wait to see it. Madagascar - I love animated movies, and with the high standard of CG movies that have come out e.g Shrek, Finding nemo etc, I can see this one being great. I've seen quite a few trailers for this one and anything with a claustrophobic giraffe, a not so fearsome lion and a troupe of phsycotic penguins gets my vote. In short, it looks hilarious. The Chronicles of Narnia - Having watched the original TV adaptations of several of the chronicles I was so happy when it was announced that they were doing a film of 'The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe'. I'm not too sure if the original shows were played anywhere outside of the UK but the movie has a lot to live up to these childhood memories. I just love Aslan really, especially the scene with the stone table and afterwards ^_~. Batman Begins - It doesn't need to be said that I'm looking forward to this one (though it isn't my sig anymore). I just can't wait really. The other four have been so different from eachother (well the last two from the first two anyway) so I want to see what is done with this one. Also, of course, I'm looking forward to Willy Wonka and I think I'm going to have to check out this Corpse Bride. If this movie is as good as the book, I'll be quite happy. As far as I'm concerned the Naria books beat out the LotR ones, but that's me lol. The old art I saw for this movie was pretty badass, I hope it turns out. Also, is Corpse Bride actually directed by Burton? He didn't have that role in Nightmare Before Christmas, yet still seemingly gets more credit than the man who did.
Lord Rannos
Oh, come on! The only movie that I've heard of that's coming out this year is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! I cannot wait to see that. It's been a radio broadcast, a TV show, and a book series, and the movie is gonna suck really bad. Yup, I acknowledge that the movie will probably be horrible, but I still gotta see it. Narnia I guess I'll also need to see, right after I reread all of the books. I remember those as being closer to kids books, though.....hmm...anyway, that is something I've gotta check out. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Not entirely sure I need to see that. Looks like it'll just be kind of a kiddy thing. Maybe it'll be good.....wait for the previews and see. Heck, I don't make it out to the movies that much anyway. Annie
I'm looking forward to Constantine and Corpse Bride. Of course, I would love to see the new Willy Wonka..but I'm not going to watch it alone, lol. The trailer was enough to mortify me. (Note: Annie is afraid of clowns, or anything remotely similar. She has seen the trailer, and crazy Johnny Depp kind of scared her. And she's petrified to see the oompa loompas..if there are any.) But it looks to be really promising, so full of rich color. Plus, I love Johnny Depp and I am very curious as to see his performance in this movie. The Corpse Bride looks gorgeous. The animation looks spectacular, and I was always a fan of that style. Now, Constantine, I'm still not 100% certain as to what it's really about. I know, I have to go read some more on it. But, if anyone knows me and my style of RPG, I absolutely adore religious/sacreligious genres. Besides, Keanu Reeves is hot, and I find him to be a decent actor. Oh, not to mention Rachel Weisz is freakin' beautiful, and a fabulous actress. My favorite ^_^
Hevn
Wow. I can definitely see Nakata's touch in that trailer. Now I'm looking forward to The Ring 2 more than I did. I'm expecting it will be really good because he's directing it. I want to see his magic with a bigger budget. I love Ringu, but I was only mildly impressed with the American version of it. I love how 'disturbing' the video was though. Constantine..hmm...not really looking forward to but I'm very curious about it since last year, lol. Like Mr. Azazel said, he's my biggesr "if" too. I just hope it won't look too Matrix-ey. Pagan
This year is a comic book lovers dream. Iron Man This movie is a mystery, that even the people who are making it can't figure out. The release date for this movie changes more then my undewear. At first they said 2004, and now its 2005(which I still suspect will change). They don't even know who will be their leading man. Nicholas Cage, Tom Cruise, and even Leonardo DiCaprio have expressed interest in playing the richboy Tony Starks, but no confirmation have been made. The villian hasn't even been selected and I'm still hoping it won't be M.O.D.O.k . Yet still after all of these setbacks; I'm looking forward to seeing a truely awesome movie with excellent special effects. Fantastic Four I hated there comics, I hated there powers, I hated there name, but I would be lying if I said I'm going to hate this movie. I don't expect it to be better then Spiderman or X-Men, but I'm praying it will be better then Punisher and The Hulk. I expect this movie to be action movie of the summer due to lack of true competition. Batman Begins I cried when I heard about this movie. It is either going to save the Batman movie franchise or bury it. I myself have enjoyed all of the Batman movies with the exception of Batman Forever, and would hate to see the chain end on a low note. The main problem to me is that each movie has featured a different actor portraying the dark knight. Constantine This movie is so close to release I can smell the fire and brimstone. Hellblazer by Vertigo comics is one of my favorite graphic novels. I don't think the movie will have as much action as many would like because the comic is a talker, but the plot is so good it will carry the entire movie. My Honorable Mentions Underworld: Evolution War of The Worlds Jurassic Park IV
Sol-Blade
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this movie yet. I'm really looking forward to one flick this summer, and that is going to be Kingdom of Heaven. It's about the First Crusade that took place. Mainly, it is about the moral decisions the knights had to make on their way. If you aren't up on your history, the Crusades were basically attempts to take back the 'Holy Land' (aka Antioch, Edessa, Tripoli, and Jeruselem) from the 'heathens' (Muslims). The Christian Pope at the time had recieved word that the 'Holy Land' was being corrupted by non-Christians. So he asked all Christians to rally up, and march to the 'Holy Land' and to free it from their control. Well, as the orginal army marched across Europe, more and more people joined it so it became larger and more varied. From ordinary townsfolk to even children, all were inspired by the Pope's speech. Well when they finally got there, they had laid siege to the city and after a day (Not sure how long it took for the city to fall) they had occupied it. They then slaughtered every soul who lived there; men, women, children, Muslim, Jew, and even the Christians who lived there. Anyways, the film is about 3 knights who are ordered by their liege to join the Crusade. They question whether it is right, and the basic morality of it all. When they get to Jeruselem, one of the knights (Orlando Bloom) is in awe of it's beauty. And at the end of the trailer describes it as the "Kingdom of Heaven". If I recall, the movie comes out in May. Looking forward to it!

I 'EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE'-d out loud at the cinema when this trailer caught me off guard. Otherwise not too interested in the film, though. I've just had enough of epics. >_> Charlie and the Chocolate Factory sounds like a blast. Tim Burton's an astounding director with this fascinating style, and I can't wait to see the twist he adds to this, and I'm anxious to see how it will compare to the original film. Star Wars of course. I'm a bit lost as to how it ended, though. It's been a year or two since I've watched the other films. The Interpreter, just because I'm in love with Nicole Kidman, and I'm intrigued by the trailer. Not a fan of Sean Penn, and he seems to be playing the same role in this film as most of his others, but eh, well. Ring 2... the first one didn't scare me very much at all. I did have an odd incident where I was watching it, and all of a sudden this loud 'THUMP' went off in my room and this blue light just flashed out of my room. Apparently, my mouse fell. [Oh how I <3 San Francisco seismic waves.] Then there was this other time where I was watching it with my best mate and she just SCREAMED and GRABBED my arm and me shitless. But hmm. I didn't get a chance to see the American version at the cinema. I saw Ringu at this special new screening in a smaller place at a university, but that wasn't very scary. If the score is as good as Ringu for Ring 2, then it should be rather cool. Honestly, watching Ringu on mute was very entertaining. It was the score more than anything. Oh, and I was looking forward to aksdjalkjsd on Precinct 13 because John Leguzimo [who is one of my favourite actors] was in it, but the story seemed a bit dull, so I passed. asdkjskd I'm going to be so clueless during the next Academy Awards. Guest strangedrugs
I'm definitely excited about Willy Wonka. can't wait to see that interpretation of the book. ^_^ I'm not too fond of the newer Star Wars movies... I miss Harrison Ford, I s'pose. Ring 2 is the other one that I might actually see... although I doubt I will... I'll probably just see the Japanese sequel. Ringu was way better than The Ring anyway...
WW2
Eh...the only movie I'm really looking forward to, so far, is Sin City, which is based on the comic book of the same name. It stars Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba (who is in two comic book movies this year), Frodo, Michael Clark Duncan, and lots of other great actors who I can't think of. Also both Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are directing different parts of the movie, which alone is awsome! The main reason I'm looking forward to the film isn't because I'm a fan of the comic, I've never actually read any of the graphic novels , but because of the visual style it has. Like the comic its in black and white and has a little bit of color added to emphasize specific things, such as blood and hair color. All in all it looks pretty damn cool, but its really kinda hard to explain the style. Iit'll probably be better if you all checked out the trailer. Hopefully it won't be a let down. OtakuSennen
Damn, it figures the minute I think of a film to bring up in this thread, someone else beats me to it. :P I didn't really pay too much attention to Sin City until I read Entertainment Weekly's recent article on it, which hailed it as "the next Pulp Fiction" and so on. It seems like one of those coveted comic-to-film adaptations where the director is actually a fan of the series, and has the intention of making the movie as faithful as it can be to the original story. Frank Miller, the comic's creator, is actually playing a major role in the production.. That could make it quite promising. I've never read the graphic novels, but if I can get my innocent under-18 hands on them I'd be more than happy to read them. As always, I'm a sucker for the visual style. When I watch the trailer, I can't help but think "Sky Captain done right." Now, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was a visually stunning movie, but its plot bored the hell out of me. The darker, film-noir stories that make up the world of Sin City should fix that right up for me. I suppose Ring 2 is right up there, as well. If I hadn't known the entire movie's plot intricacies before I saw it (I saw The Ring first), Ringu would probably be one of my favorite horror films. Nakata's involvement makes it even more tantalizing. The thought of the middle-ground between the two films' dynamics is enough to get me ranting. Semjaza
I don't know why you'd think Sky Captain done right... Sin City is so unrelated to the film that I don't even know how to compare them, other than the fact that both are obviously stylized. I don't get this lol. I loved Sky Captain because of its old serial feel, which the story pretty much stayed true to. I also forgot to mention The Devil's Rejects. I'm like one of three people who enjoyed House of 1,000 Corpses and this is more or less the direct sequel. It almost gave more of a Natural Born Killers feel than a horror movie feel. Not that I think the films will be that alike, it's just it seemed like a completely different film than I expected. I hope it turns out.
Endymion
Off of the top of my head I could think of a few movies that I'm really hoping to see this year. Batman Begins - Christian Bale will make a damn good batman, and i need a batman movie that will get my mind off that crappy Geoge Clooney one... Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Johnny Depp. Tim Burton. Need I say more? War of the Worlds - I haven't seen a trailer for it. But the novel by H.G. Wells, and it having Tom Cruise...it should be pretty darn good. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - I watched a couple trailers of it last night, and doesnt look half bad. OtakuSennen
I don't know why you'd think Sky Captain done right... Sin City is so unrelated to the film that I don't even know how to compare them, other than the fact that both are obviously stylized. I don't get this lol. I loved Sky Captain because of its old serial feel, which the story pretty much stayed true to.
That's just it. Style is what catches my eye when I see trailers. I saw Sky Captain because of it, and I would like to see Sin City because of it. Sky Captain, though it was definitely true to golden age era cinema, felt very cliched to me (I know it was supposed to, but that's barely an excuse to me). Besides, what I was really aiming for with that comment was how so much of Sin City was apparently filmed on a green screen, just like Sky Captain. I'm also interested in Spielberg's "Memoirs of a Geisha." I really don't know that much about it, though. Perhaps The Last Samurai left a pleasant aftertaste in my mouth and left me wanting more olde-time Japanese goodness.
