The False Assumptions of Anime and Manga

I'm assuming that gaarasgirl is from the US, so excuse me if this doesn't apply should she's not be from here.

The United States is depraved and liberal as hell. It's the bottom bunker. Here, to tell someone something is porn is to get them to look into it. It doesn't matter what adjective is there is before it: "hardcore," "fetish," or "animated." Porn is porn. And so, by giving into the consensus that anime is indeed animated porn is to bring popularity to the medium as soon as possible.

I'm not even joking, and I'm not saying everyone here is like that. However, while my first anime was Ronin Warriors, every anime fan I met at Stevens (which adds up to four people...) watched some porn anime first. It was only then that they decided to look at other anime series.

So, live with the stereotype, if only to make anime more popular and let it solidify its fate in the states. And hey, there might be a few people who actually start liking anime for reasons other than porn. ^^

heh, what is also true is the US is also strangely ultra conservative...it's like a mixture of oil and water. you tell one of the conservies that it isn't porn and they don't believe you and lable you as evil for the rest of your days!! (then I bet they sneak a peek at anime for themselves cause on the inside they are just as perverted as the rest :animeswea )

i agree with azurewolf. you tell someone its not something, they instantly beleive it is, and it doesnt matter what it is.

went into the living room last night and told my parents i got a show that made absolutely no sence, and that i had watched it at least 3 times to the same result. FLCL. i was on the 5th episode, and my dad decided he wanted to see this. (if i get dual audio, i usually turn on the english/*** subtitles) i turned off the words, and he sat there for about 5-10 minutes watching it. im suprised he stayed there that long, really... i asked him if it made any sence, and he said no. i warned him, though, lol. now, if i can just get them to sit down and watch fruits basket. i think they would like it if they could just get over the same language they say on prime time series. my moms book is something like this cartoons/anime + language and/or nudity = explicite lyrics/evil/porn

It's kind of sad how people assume with out even bothering to actually find out the truth. I went to the bookstore to buy the first two books in D.N.Angel today and a married couple was there in the store with their kid. When the mother saw what I had she asked her husband what it was. He actually told her that it was Japanese sex and porn novels and that everyone in Japan read them all the time. It was really sad to see them make such an assumption. Yet at the same time it was so riduculous that I couldn't stop myself from laughing at them. *though that had alot of people staring at me, and yet the more people who stared the funnier it became* Anyway, If it really was porn like they thought was it wouldn't be sold here. Utah has a law against porn being sold here in the stores.

Forchantly not all the people here are that stupid. But if you know anything about Utah then you can imagine just how closed minded they are about anime and manga. My family isn't, but then my aunt use to live in Okinawa, *yes my spelling sucks, sorry* and my parents aren't from Utah either. so I've been exposed to Japanese culture for a very long time.

I really don't care. But then, I don't really care if others share my hobbies.

But since you obivously do care, remember that the only cure to ignorance is knowledge. Hand them a copy of Berserk volume one or whatever you think they'd like and force them to read the entire volume. See if that changes their mind.

If they refuse, remind them that they don't have the grounds to make fun of your stuff when they haven't even checked it out. Also, remember your amunition. They probably have a hobby that you don't share. Every hobby is insultable, most even have stereotypes to go along with them. Use those insults and stereotypes to your advantage and to put things in perpective.

Well I was just wondering now that I am watching Teen Titans, what my friend said about anime. Well I was at lunch and a random conversation came up about anime. He really didn?t understand anime and knew that he just hated it. I was telling him about different manga and anime and he would just refuse to even look at it. He called Yu Yu Hakusho "Yu Yu Hak a loogi" He also said Teen Titans was anime because they show the emotions like in other anime, so just wondering if any one around you was like that.

I hate it when people act that way. :animesigh

To start off, who ever you were talking to is a complete moron, who is probably just to scared to open his borders to new and creative ideas. :animeangr

To answer your question, no there isn't anyone i know who is particularly that way about anime. Although i don't exactly wave a sign saying "Hey, i'm an anime fan! Praise/ridicule me!" (Not at all to say that's what you do) So in that case most people probably don't know about my joy of anime, with the exception of my friends (who just about all enjoy anime as well). Of course, i wouldn't lie either, if someone were to ask if i liked anime (which has happened once, maybe twice) i would most certainly say yes, and not at all be ashamed.

If anything, i would ridicule that friend of yours. :animesmil

No offence to your friend or anything.....but that's just plain rude to make fun of something with out even trying it.:animeangr And calling Yu Yu Hakusho 'Yu Yu Hak a loogi' is moronic. :animesigh He really should at least try to be open minded....

Weren't there already two topics like this?

The False Assumptions of Anime and Manga
http://otakuboards.com/showthread.php?t=45906

and

The Problems with School and Anime
http://otakuboards.com/showthread.php?t=45899

these two topics, as well as this one, seem just to complain about those who don't know much about Anime...

If your friend doesn't like Anime, don't force it on him. But tell him to respect your tastes, just like you'll respect his. If he ever wants to learn, that's when you teach him. Otherwise, it'll be pointless. Those who which to hate will always hate.

 • 4 weeks later...
i really cant stand people who think that way about anime. ive heard so much crap about "toon porn" and it makes me mad every single time i hear it. i just want to grab someone and shake some sense into their thick skulls. so many people dont even know how good some series are. more series need to be exposed (not the kiddie stuff) that show what anime is really about.

In Grave of the Fireflies, they show their emotions like real people. That must mean that *GASP* REAL PEOPLE ARE ANIME!!! :D  :p  ;)
