FireDemon_Hoshi
My boyfriend and I always argue about this. I'd say anime is basically for teens until they edit it and he says it's kid stuff yet he watches what I can give him of my Yu Yu Hakusho tapes and he's 19. I'd say...if some anime wasn't edited and was still in uncut version it would be more for teens then children. :evil3:
Dagger
That depends on the series. The most popular shows (i.e. Naruto, Sailor Moon, DBZ, Pretty Cure) are usually aimed at a younger age group. At the same time, a lot of series air close to or after midnight in Japan, a strong indicator that they're meant to target the niche otaku market made up primarily of older teens and adults. So really it varies from anime to anime. Similarly, one can't pigeon-hole videogames, live-action movies or Western animation as being marketed exclusively at a specific demographic. ~Dagger~
r3vival
I have to agree with Dagger that it really depends on the anime. Some are aimed at the older anime buffs while others specifically target children. There is also that in between that could go either way as far as I see it and I think you can't really get everything an anime has to offer until your a little older and able to understand matters that arent placed in front of your face and require a little thinking to notice. Most anime has much to say that isnt given up front and it would generally require a more "matured" mind to catch a lot of these references (generally of course). r2vq
Anime is not just for kids. -.= Like Dagger-dono said, Anime can vary for many different age groups and different target audiences. Yu Yu Hakusho and most anime you see on TV is for a younger age group, but there is so much anime out there that is definately NOT for kids. Hentai for example. -.o -ArV
boxybrown305
I agree that it depends on the anime itself. There are many that are geared toward children, most of which is the common things that you will find on Saturday morning cartoons, and is therefore viewed as anime being for kids. But it's like Dagger said, around the midnight hour, they show more of the mature anime. Overall i think there are more anime meant for a slightly older audience. In terms of hentai, i don't even consider that anime, just a dirty kind of porn which disgraces anime on the opposite extreme of childish cartoons. I respect Pokemon much more than hentai any day.

JenniKate
As most people have said anime is for everyone. I started watching things like Astro Boy when I was 8 or 9 - and many others (without knowing they were 'anime'). Then when I got older I moved onto Ghost in the Shell then when I was older still Evangelion and I still watch all sorts of anime (I'm now 27). I can imagine I will still be watching anime for years to come. So some are for kids, some are for teens, some are for adults and there are huge amounts aimed at all age groups. Anime is really just a style of entertainment with many genre's. It's almost like asking 'Are live action movies for kids or teens' the answer is 'yes and more' because it's a style not a genre. It's the genre that tends to be more specific in it's target audience than the style.

No matter how "disgraceful" hentai may be, you'd be hard-pressed to find an accepted definition of anime which excludes it. :animeswea ~Dagger~

Even some exposure can be ok (thinking Tenchi Muyo). But when the unique art style of anime/manga is used for the sole purpose of pornography, i disregard it as a respectable anime... it's just porn. :animesigh There are lots of anime i don't like, however i don't disregard it. It's still anime... just bad anime. :o

Drawn porn is still manga (or comics; pick your poison). And frankly there are plenty of television anime that come very, very close to being outright hentai (yet are never categorized as such, which begs the question of where one would draw the line. What about anime that are less explicit, but obviously attempting to pander to the lolicon crowd? What about series that are packed with excruciatingly detailed, gratuitous violence? Anyway, a show doesn't have to be outright porn in order for sexual titillation/gratification to be its primary raison d'etre... *glances at Girls Bravo* I think the fact that it's animated (in Japan, if you will) is what makes it anime, along with art style (though to a lesser extent). Content is pretty much the absolute last factor I'd consider when trying to judge stuff like this, because anime is simply a subset of a larger medium, animation, not a genre (as others have pointed out). Plenty of anime are disgusting, gruesome, just plain bad and generally not worth the time of day. Anime does not have to be wholesome or profound to qualify as anime. ~Dagger~
Lord Dante
Personally, i feel that anime is just there, and aimed at anyone who wants to watch it. i mean there are extremes on eather side, anime that is blatantly for children, and anime that is blatantly for teens. but as people have said before me, anime is for everyone. even children and teens! Guest sicabee
Anime isnt for one or the other. It depends on the series. There are a lot of anime for children, and there are some just for adults. So I dont belive anime is made just for one age group more then the other in my opinion.

animemonkey13
Edited anime is for kids and some anime like Yu-Gi-Oh and Sailormoon are really childish. But some animes deal with problems of adult nature.

I mean, it really does depend on the anime. I mean, you wouldn't catch me watching Hamtaro (unless, of course, I'm under mind control, or am having a really REALLY boring day), and you wouldn't want a kid watching something like Lupin III or Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. So personally, I think it's for both.
