So far, everything has been just lists of fighters without any real reasons behind your choices. Favorites threads are all well and good, but when there's no real discussion going on, then the topic really can't go anywhere. I'll leave the thread open for now, but if it continues to be list after list after list, then I or another person will close it.

Okay after a week of having Tekken 5, my list has changed slightly. My first choice is now Steve Fox of Tekken 5. His british accent is awesome. His attitude reminds me a lot of myself. I love both of his costumes. Steve is a boxer and i love that new show the Contender so thats a plus. He moves fluidly and he's very hard to hit. His punches pack a whallop and thats why he's my new #1.
My second and third are Marshall Law and Hwoarang, both of Tekken 5. I like Law simply because i like Bruce Lee movies. I like Hwoarang because of his style. He mostly kicks but he has many versatile moves. I also like his customization items on Tekken 5. I dont use Hwoarang much any more but i owned Tekken 3 and Tag Tournament with him and Law.
My 4th and 5th choices are Maxi and Kilik, both from Soul Calibur 2. Yes they are button mashers but they are complex button mashers. Maxi is here because of my fascination with nunchaku. Kilik is on my list because of his flashy moves w/ his bo staff. Yes they're basic characters that i use simply for fun. My SC2 powerhouse is Talim.
Coming in 6th is Ryu Hayabusa. Now i have never played Dead or Alive, nor do i intend to. I like him because of Ninja Gaiden. I didnt play it much but i like his style. My friend told me that he's apart of the DOA series, so thats how he snuck in on my list.
Last but not least is Jacky Bryant, my best player from Virtua Fighter 4:EVO. He is the only character with any style in a storyless fighting game. He's the only person i used on VF4:EVO partly because i could customize him to look like Goku or Vegeta. VF4:EVO was lame so that put Jacky at the bottom of my favorites list.

They want more than a list. Lets giv'em more than a list.

and as a sidenote, my favorite from Smash Bros. Melee is Samus

Time for elaboration.

Tekken 5: My list changed slightly.

Craig Marduk: A beast. Period. his moves have insane lag, and startup isn't so great, but he's great, seeing how noone really uses him.

Bryan Fury: Replaces Devil Jin. Jin is too broken, I don't want broken characters as my flagship. Bryan is a really versatile fighter. His moves are fast and strong. He is the closest fighter in gaming history to copy my style of fighting.
(Freestyle Muy-thai)

Martial Law: I agree with shadowmatrix, he's Bruce Lee. I use his quick and confusing punches, with very few kicks. Which in my opinion, mimics Bruce Lee much more accuratelly than constant backflips.

Guilty Gear X 2:

Sol-Badguy: People call him a newb character, that's a bold-faced lie. People usually pick him first cause he's "cool' (I want for johny) NO ONE is a newb character in this game. He can let lose one move to the next, as long as someone catches his lag time.

Potemkin: Another Beast. He's very slow, but VERY powerful. His grab has more range than people give him credit for, and he CAN combo.

SSBM:

Ganondorf: In the hands of a newb, he's slow as ****. In an advanced players' hands, the only thing slow on him (besides Warlock Punch, Volcano Kick) is his running animation.

Captain Falcon: I dubed him "Captain Phoenix" ("PHNX" as his filename). I only usually play him in melees and come from nowhere with either his "Condor Kick" (Airial Knee) or "Ceiling of stomps" (or "Falling Sky" his airial Stomp)

Hope that shows why I use those characters.

for Soul Calibur 2, My faves are Cervantes, Maxi, and Nightmare, though I'm fairly proficient with everyone but Ivy, and anyone w/ a shield.
Cervantes because he's a pirate...i mean, c'mon. If you play him right, the fact that
he's the only truly evil character
in the game comes out.
Maxi because even though he's got no range, he's still fast, and good for when you play against someone who blocks a lot. Just combo away their life 1% at a time.
Nightmare because his special weapon is a Boat Oar. Simply marvelous. That, and the fact that he uses his weight visibly when swinging his weapon, helps throw off attackers, because they want to close in when he leans back.

I like Ein, and anyone but Bayman and Tengu in DOA2:Hardcore. Ein simply because you can juggle and combo like crazy with the right attacks, then quickly pull off a wind-up punch of some sort, or his ridiculous One-Inch-Punch ripoff.
<- -> Punch

 • 4 weeks later...
1. Mitsrugi (SCII) - Hes a samurai, what else is there to say? He was also pretty good when it came to fighting, one of my favorites.

2. Jack (Tekken) - Whichever Jack, metal or not, he was always awesome. I loved to just bust on people with his powerful attacks.

3. Kage (Virtual Fighter) - Kage, hes a ninja, from the VF series. One of my favorites as well.

4. Nightmare (SCII) - Although I thought he sucked in actual gameplay, he was pretty f'in cool.

5. Yoshimitsu (Tekken) - Although Tekken never really incorporated weapons, Yoshimitsu always had one anyway. I loved his moves two, using the sword to make him float as helicopter, priceless lol.

ok, i've spent the last god knows how many hours playing guilty gear X2 for the first time so here's an updated list of favorites:

Chip Zanuff: fast, fast, fast, and invisible(ish) to boot. plus he has an awesome forearm blade. he is convinced he's japaneese, but he's american (priceless idiot)

Dizzy: who can argue with wings that argue? and an awesome overdrive that takes 2/3 damage off. no instant kill though.

Bridget: he/she/it has some of my favorite moves in the whole game. "me and my killing machine" takes the cake. a bear riding a trike with spikey wheels in a spiked flaming bubble. plus he/she/it has a really funny story mode.

Zappa: the epitome of unpredictable-ness fighting.

may: has the best walk in the game, and some of the funny moves.

all the other characters from GGXX: they all rule, they all come from a game that rules. so i guess they doubly rule

I have to admit that I've not played many fighting games apart from the Tekken series, however I will take a crack at this.

Paul Phoenix [Tekken]: Paul has been my favourite character in Tekken Four, mainly because of his interesting look and back-story [though his ending movie in Tag Team was priceless]. That said his fighting style in Tekken 4 was more than a match for many other characters, and was most certainly not Judo as his claims it is.

Marshal Law/Forest Law [Tekken]: For a long time I used the Laws because they were easily enough to get to grips with once you had enough experience, as well as this they were one of the few characters with whom you could juggle opponents.

Jin Kazama [Tekken]: When I first played Tekken Tag Team, I used to use Jin about as much as I'd use the Forest, mainly because I found his fighting style to be a good mix of speed and power [Even though he was basically a clone of Kazuya and Heihatchi]. When I beat Tekken 4 and unlocked Jin I decided to play through it to see how he had changed, and I thought they had really made him quite a good and original character.

Heihatchi Mishima [Tekken]: The devil-incarnate of the Tekken series, well not literally as he lacks the Devil Gene. Heihatchi has always been a fascinating character from a psychological point of view, he gets what he wants, how he wants and damn those caught in the crossfire. His haircut has to be rather unique even for that game, and I thought he fought rather well once you got the hang of him.

Heh all Tekken, imagine that.

Pikachu from the original Super Smash Bros. is my choice. Though for a long time Link was my best character, my skill with Pikachu eventually eclipsed everyone else. I became a master at juggling not just one, but multiple opponents -- on the ground, in the air, didn't matter. I'd encorporate every move available, items, even the level's evironment into my combos. (Saffron City is especially good for using the environment to farther your combos; the varied types and levels of platforms are great for bouncing people off walls and juggling them through the air.) Not even my brother and his friend, who got dang good at using Kirby's mid-air down+A move for instant KOs (get your opponent out over the edge and then hit them with that, and a KO is almost certain), could stand up to my Pikachu.

Back when I was at my peak, I could pull off some crazy crap with Pikachu. And even now, the core moves of my main combos still come naturally when I play, though I'm only about half as good as I was. So I can't help but love that "stupid electric rat," which my opponents always thought was so useless. :toothy:

Ah, fighting games, second only to RPGs in my opinion. This means, of course, that I've got a few that I've learned to prefer and kick *** with.

Xion (Bloody Roar) - Anyone who didn't see this coming must've had a lobotomy sometime in their past. Come on, the dude's my namesake. I like him for several reasons, including his awesome Beast Mode (giant, silver, energy-blade wielding monster), his Player-2 costume in BR3, silver hair, reckless, coldblooded arrogance, and his awesome fighting style. Xion is the character that has sent me down my path of Silver, Bishies, and combat. He shall always hold a special place in my heart.

Chipp Zanuff (Guilty Gear) - Chipp is not only a supremely awesome character, being a silver-haired ninja an' all, but he is also the first GG character I was really GOOD at. I first tried my hand at Sol and Johnny, but found Chipp's volatile speed and insane combos to be exactly what I needed. And he has always served me well.

Johnny (Guilty Gear) - Though Chipp is the first character I was good at, Johnny was the first that I tried the game with. His suave demeanor, awesome outfit, and deadly iaijutsu made him a formidable character. Until, of course, I got my butt handed to me by Dizzy.

Shenlong (Bloody Roar) - How could I forget BR's resident sociopath, Shenlong. The psychotic, sadistic clone of Long is topped only slightly by Xion in my opinion. Gotta love a deranged murderer, especially one that can transform into a very cool looking anthromorphic blue-white tiger...wow, that sounded wierd. I'm good as him, and I never get tired of that insane laughter (well...I do a little in BR4).

Lee Chaolon (Tekken) - I know Lee probably isn't a popular character, what with his role in the Tekken series as the rather pathetic adopted son of Heihachi, who's sole perpose in life was to enrage Heihachi's real son. But, Lee Chaolon is the character that got me my Arcade-Gaming groove back after a long reprieve. It's thanks to this silver-haired Bishie that I could hold my own once more. Plus, he has a fighting style similar to mine. I can even do one of his moves (the tri-level kick combo, which isn't all that hard to do as long as you're careful and don't strain something).

Gah, I run low on time with more fighters to go. Alas, 'tis my fate. Oh well...I can always edit later.

Lets see...Starting with the oldies then to new.

Fatal Fury/King Of Fighters: Terry Bogard.
Lets face it folks if you've played KOF or Fatal Fury then chances are you've either seen this bad-boy or played as him. He has easy to learn moves and if played right you can prevent people from getting up after knocking them down. Sure, some people would call that cheap, I call it winning. Hah! Besides, he looks just THAT cool!

Mortal Kombat: Kabal
Now I know he didn't surface until the 3rd installment but thats when the series had hit its high-point. At first Kabal didn't have much "curb appeal" but after I played as him he quickly became my favorite character with his lightning fast moves and brutal looking Fatalities. He was good. I'm glad he has made a triumphant return in Mortal Kombat: Deception.

Tekken: N/A
Sorry, folks I just had to let everyone out there know that I'm not a fan of Tekken. Never have been, never will be. I mean, I play it with my friends, when they bring it over, but I won't buy a Tekken game to save my life.

Sol Calibur 1 & 2: Kilik
Most people say hes' cheap but I say he rocks, he has range, he has power, he is just all around good. Sure his pokes can get annoying and his brutal juggles can piss anyone off but whats not to like? Range and Power. Enough said.

GGX2#R: Sol Badguy
Everyone just shut up about Sol being a cheap and or "newb" character! If you can't beat him then you're obviously not a good player, honestly, I want REAL proof how he is a "cheap" character. He can be beat, right? That aside. I fist picked Sol back when I played GGX because he looked like a total bad..guy, but when I played as him I say that he was more than just looks he could back it up! Since GGX all the way up to Isuka, I've played as Sol even if there are no one-hit-kills in Isuka and you have to manually turn around.

GGX2#R: Slayer
Okay so I've found another character from GG that I really like. He's a vampire, he's a gentleman and he can literally kill you in about 4 hits! Sol vs. Slayer...I wonder who'd REALLY win..

I'm sure there are more fighting games out there that I've played and picked characters in but I'm not going to sift through them all...I've listed the majors so there you go.
