Please Burn the "What Made You Cry?" Thread

I'm beginning to realize that more and more new members are absolutely inconsiderate of other fans when it comes to anime series and plot twists. There seems to be some satisfacation or air of arrogance among those who spoil shows for others. While I have no clue why knowing what will happen in a show makes one feel like his/her balls are bigger, it's really starting to piss me off.

The "What Made You Cry?" thread is a perfect example. I don't know of any solution, but there has to be something that can be done. And it's not only unfair to members, but to the moderators who have to fix the spoilers and tag them. I think there should be something done. I'm not calling for harsher punishment or anything (but that wouldn't be too bad... <_<), but... just something.

You're not alone. Online, virtually nothing ticks me off more than being spoiled, to the point that I sometimes worry about my ability to handle it in a calm and rational manner. :animeangr

Anyway, I just started going through the last few pages of the thread in question and spoiler-tagging some of the more horridly revealing posts. Unfortunately I can't comb over the entire topic at the moment.

Some months ago, I thought about making a spoiler-tag sticky thread for the Anime Lounge, a la the one that can be found in Play It as well as the one in the Music, Movies & TV forum. But I never got around to discussing it with Solo. Something like that could help, although I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make; the people who write about spoilers without even offering so much as a little warning may not be people who are likely to read sticky topics. Meh.

I had not ventured in to that thread in fear of spoilers and I just checked out the last page which shows how much the thread has taken a turn for the terrible. There are a few good posts but it has turned into a major spoiler thread since that is what it looks like people are just listing the endings. Just lists of spoilers and even a double post in that thread. Arrgh! Most of the spoilers without explanations and no spoiler tags too!

I am not sure what can be done about it. No matter how many times a mod may remind members to use spoiler tag there will be those who don't bother reading those warnings. Of course by then the damage is already done. Perhaps a sticky at the top of the forum about how to use spoiler tags and when to use them?

I don't know if those who spoil a series/movie realize what they are doing or if they are just being malicious to other members of the community. I would like to give the benefit of the doubt and say they don't know what they are doing is bad. :animeangr

Edit: When I started this response no one had responded yet! You guys are speedy!

Dagger, I think at least a sticky would help those who may not know how to use them but want too. It might help just a little bit with those people and maybe those who just don't know what the net-etiquette is about spoilers. I am all for a sticky in the AL.

I'm pretty sure this used to be directly addressed in the rules, though it doesn't seem to be anymore. Something along the lines of saying that the frequent posting of spoilers without the use of spoiler tags would result in a warning and, if the member persisted, a ban. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing that added back into the rules.

Also, the sticky thread in Play It did seem to help a fair bit. I still have to add spoiler tags to posts every now and then, but not all that often -- not enough from any individual member to warrent a warning, at any rate. So I'd definitely recommend putting one up in the Anime Lounge.

Yeah, it did. I added that thread because I was entirely tired of it constantly happening. It's obvious most people don't read through everything on the site, but I think a sticky thread is more obvious than a lot of other methods (even including having it in the rules).

It seemed to help substantially. As Des said, there's still some times where I see it happening, but nothing to the extent of how it was previously. We're not even talking threads where it might have been expected, people were seriously belting out entire endings just in basic discussions sometimes.

I'm certainly happy to see bans handed out to those who frequently ignore staff requests to use spoilers. So, yeah, if this is happening frequently with some specific members, it's quite okay for Dagger to take action.

I have a suggestion. Create a "Notify Moderator" button at the bottom of each thread. That way, when anyone sees a spoiler without a tag, they can notify a moderator who can easily show up and edit the thread title with the word "SPOILERS".

We have one of those buttons. It's the little exclamation mark in the top right of posts. ^_~

And if you're going to report a post, please put an actual reason for doing so in the report thing. I'm tired of getting reasons like "This is spam", "Uh..." and "WTF?" when people report posts.

Anyway, the addition of the Spoiler Tag sticky seemed to help out a ton. I rarely have to spoiler the posts of people anymore. Maybe once or twice a month at the most.

I'm with James on this one, banning would be a good punishment for people with multiple infractions on this rule. I mean, you can't really enjoy the series knowing the biggest plot twist. Not only does it ruin the anime, it creates an air of arrogance around the thread, like Azure was saying. The "my balls are bigger" game is getting old, fast. A warning, then a ban would be good for me.

Alright, I'll put together a spoiler-tag sticky thread for the Anime Lounge; Solo has more than enough work & spammish-ness to deal with as it is, and I can probably get it posted sometime today. It's very encouraging to learn that this type of sticky has had a noticeable effect in Play It.

So much for deciding that I'd avoid spoiling myself for FMA. While tagging posts in the now-notorious "What Made You Cry?" topic, I found out what happens in episode 25. Having that sort of plot twist prematurely ruined is what makes me want to cry. :animesigh

Anyway, I'll also start keeping an eye on members who regularly dribble unmarked spoilers all over the place.

Yeah I've had at least...oh I don't know...four endings revealed to me in the afore mentioned thread to shows I have not finished yet. Yeah, that kinda pissed me off as I quickly tried to forget what I read. But shame on me for reading it in the first place...

Anyways, I don't know exactly what else you could do besides inform, warn, moderate/edit, and eventually ban. Now I would say (Completely hypothetical), out of every 10 people who joined...probably 5 read the rules and stickies. Out of the five who don't, maybe 3 of them *want* to use the spoiler tags, but don't know how. Can you hold that against them? So I say if it's a first time thing, then just inform them and give them a heads-up. Of course, for the other 2 who just don't give a flying f%#^, their fate is up to you.

Just my thought on it anyways. :D

You know, Generic might be on to something. If someone who doesn't care for spoilers does the job, it'll make it better for the rest of us, haha. I certainly am sick of spoilers, and I'm sorry for the mods (such as Dagger) who have to have great series ruined for them just because someone wasn't considerate enough.

What do you think about branding people for a week or something as punishment? <_<

Brilliant. Public humiliation is the clear answer to all problems, at least in part. : D

If some one reveals a spoiler and just doesn't care (because accidents happen and people forget important things, sometimes, and there's no sense in being unfair) their avatar should be replaced with a big, red S.

I had the ending of Cowboy Bebop ruined for me while innocently browsing a music thread or something. Jesus. The world is a horrible place sometimes, and I am not about to forgive it.
