2010DigitalBoy
Do strategy RPGs count as RPGs? Does Zelda count as an RPG? Zelda is an adventure game. And personally I think Phantasy Star Online is one of the best RPGs ever, because when you get together with a few more people it is awesome. If SRPGs do count, I pick Disgaea hands down. The whole system of ordering all of your charachters to do things and then executing them whenever you want is awesome. The sheer amount of stuff to do in that game is overwhelming. I just bought La Pucelle, the prequel, and its not quite as cool, but awesome nonetheless. NIS has a new game, Makai Kingdom, coming to America July 28! BlueYoshi
It doesn't sound like you've played one of the NIS games (Disgaea, La Pucelle, Phantom Brave, etc.). ^_^ Just letting you know.
Heh, you're right, I haven't played any of them. Phantom Brave has been my most wanted game since I first heard about it, but it hasn't hit the UK yet. I'm always strapped for cash so Disgaea is also on my to-do list. I thought about renting it at one point... but what good would that do me. :animesmil
Guest Kibou
Tales of Symphonia had a really creative battle system. I loved it. Since I love button mashing...It was really smooth too. <3! Final Fantasy Tactics Advance had an Ok system. I just hate that you can't change weapons whenever your like. Fire Emblem's was nice too~
BlueYoshi
Well, I don't see how not being able to change weapons when ever you like to in Final Fantasy Tactics would be a problem, because the most probable reason why any one would have a certain weapon equipped in the first place would be for the ability that comes with it. For example, I only stuck with the Ninja's double Masamune after I mastered the Ninja job class, only switching weapons after learning each ability.

Personally I feel that had Kingdom Hearts been made more user friendly, I mean at times it seemed quite childish, and the combat had been a bit more intense then I think it would've had a high quality battle system. However, surprisingly, the game that really surprised me with quality regarding the battle system was Final Fantasy X-2. I really enjoyed the intensity. xaustus
Well as for FF...umm ya I'm not gonna say too many fans, they'd kill me...but anyways as for my favorite RPG battle system id have to be Grandia : or more specifically Grandia 2 (because that's the one i played) anyways since i'm the only one that played it i'll tell you about it. It was alot of fun things that don't really make a difference in most other rpgs like speed and activity really made a difference. You had up to 4 people in your party and usually several enemies on screen so the action was nonstop you had a bar on the bottom of the screen that had three different spaces marked off Standby Action Perform. you selected your attack or action for the turn then according to your speed and activity that determined how fast you reached you attack. also when you looked at an enemy you could tell who they where gonna attack and what attack they where going to use so you could use a critical attack and when they where charging up you could actually stop them from attacking and put them back into the standby phase. Also there where alot of special attacks and mana attacks it was really cool. Chrono Trigger : Ok there?s really no need to explain this one right? everyone here?s played a ff game before? i just liked chrono triggers system a little better because it seems like you could get more details about you character during the battle than in FF 3. Also I liked Chrono Trigger's character and storyline a little better too so.. Xenosaga : ok before we begin let me tell you im talking about Der Wille zer Macht I haven?t played the second one yet and I'm telling you this because i think they might have changed the system a little for the second one. Now that that's out of the way I hope that most of you have also played Xenosaga 1 because if your a bad rpg nerd like me it's a must. It's battle system, for the most part, is the standard three of you taking turns against the enemy. First you select your attacks do them and then stand there like a good warrior and take there punishment. However what made Xenosaga special was that if one of your characters was about to die or you needed to kill a powerful enemies a little faster you could use Energy from your battle gauge to "skip" ahead of the enemies and slip in an attack before they could. Also the game threw in turn modifiers so that on certain turns the chance for a critical would go up and on certain turns a regular attack would do more and certain other things like that. Mario RPG : I just had to bring this one up, it had a fun easy to use system and it was a lot of fun. The perfect game for a just starting off rpg player. But I cannot stress enough how annoying it gets when I tell people I like that game and there like oh so you played that paper Mario or Super Star Saga? I think RPG was way different those games, and yes I know this sounds weird, are too schizophrenic. I am a fan of both Turn based and Real-time game play but PM and SSS just don?t seem to know what they want to be. On M RPG you selected an attack and as you jumped on the enemies you could press the button and do a combo that let you hit more than one of em so it was fun but with the other games it?s like one minute your strategizing and lining up for the attack then you gotta go jump over a banzai bill. Those games need to be in one park or the other not lingering in-between. Ok so those are my favorite RPG fight systems Please do not hurt me because I think final fantasy is overrated I mean I like halo and it?s overrated! (Love and Peace!-Vash of course, gotta love Trigun!) Give me a chance, but speaking of Legend of Dragoon that was a really good game they should make a second one! That and Majora?s mask where the first games that took me from being a play a game everyone in a while to a true gamer...sorry this was so long

I was reading through this thread and the lack of compliments given to Grandia's battle system have helped me come to one simple conclusion: not enough of you have played Grandia 2. The battle system wasn't overly intricate or sophisticated, but it was fast, fun, and action-packed. It was menu-driven but bordered on real-time. Which, of course made it visually pleasing as well. You would actually see your characters run up and attack an enemy--and stay there. They wouldn't leap across the screen and leap back. If you made two characters attack at the same time, you could set up some cool combos. Had the battles been more difficult, Grandia's encounters would have been perfect. It's definitely worth hunting this one down in the bargain bins. It's extremely enjoyable. I'd say that although overall, Skies of Arcadia is a better game, Grandia's battle system and voice acting propped it up and allowed it to be a legitimate competitor (since the frequent battles were easily the most annoying part of SOA). Tatsubei Yagyu
Personally, I think that Fire Emblem is one of the best SRPGs, because of the whole, "You die, you don't come back!" thing, back I like to play FF Tactics Advance better, because it has more replay value, and you can name your characters and your clan. I really like FFX too, I'm actually playing it right now, and it is more tactical than the other ones that have the RTB (Real-Time Battle) System.
BasouKazuma
I can't believe that Xenosaga was mentioned and Xenogears wasn't. Xenogears has a much better battle system and the mechs were actually very powerful. You could pull off longer combo moves in Xenogears. In Xenosaga, you could barely fight using the mechs cuz they were too weak for use in practical battles. Granted, I just got Xenosaga a month ago and have only played through 30 hours but you can beat a mech without having to use a mech of your own, just your bare hands. In Xenogears, you could only beat a mech bare handed towards the very end of the game so you would pretty much have to use a mech to combat other mechs for most of the game. Also in Xenogears, you could actually use items and magic while in a mech. Xenogears was just all around better than Xenosaga ... in fact it's better than most RPGs. It's too bad that it isn't as popular as the Final Fantasy games. I feel like playing it again now. It has a lot of cool stylized in-game cinema not to mention it's FMVs, the story is deep and the battle system makes it fun to play. Square did a great job with the game. It is just inspiring how good they made the game look using the original Playstation. I wish the Xenogears series would have continued instead of being made into a seperate series that is based off of Xenogears ... a complete Xenogears series would've been great. Maybe Xenogears will start up again somewhere in the future as a collaborative project between Square-Enix and Namco .... that would be awesome.
