PowerPuff Girls Z (NOT A JOKE!)

Don't think this is an April Fools joke. This was announced in Japan, where it just so happens to be April 2nd, and thus anyone thinking this is a joke is wrong.

1 of CN's 3 anime co-productions has just been reveal at the Internation Anime Festival in Tokyo. Want to know what it is?

Part of me thinks this will be awesome... The other part of me is scared out of my mind.

Oh my god. This is seriously the best news I've seen all week--hell, make that all month. I haven't been so giddy since Fafner was licensed. These new character designs kick *** forward and backward; it's like Pretty Cure on crack! Thanks for the image, EVA! :animesmil

I'll post some additional thoughts once I stop gibbering in excitement.

Some good news: AoD confirmed that the director of Fullmetal Alchemist will be doing this project. Now the part of me that was scared this was going to suck is now scared of which girl will be turned into a chimera by Mojo Jojo and if the new Professor is a humunculi.

In semi-related news, I also read that the manga-ka behind Gravitation is working on a shonen-ai manga about Colin Creevy's obsession with Harry. Now I love Harry Potter, and like Gravitation, but that idea seems more than just a bit disturbing. Luckily that rumor is 99% likely to be an April Fool's Joke.

Thank heaven that AoD doesn't mess around with April Fool's shenanigans; the fact that this was posted there relatively unchallenged is more than enough to convince me. I believe Ojamajo Doremi was also mentioned (although I can't recall the context--I think Doremi's producer is working on the new Powerpuff Girls series or something). The awesome part of all this is that unlike Ojamajo Doremi, Powerpuff Girls Z won't run the risk of being snapped up by 4Kids.

Haha, yeah... although with her gift for comedy I honestly believe Maki Murakami could make anything entertaining. I mean, she is the woman who wrote a manga about some guy's fetish for his girlfriend's neck. As a certified Murakami whore, I'm now sort of sad that this probably isn't true.

But she is working on new chapters of Gravitation--which was revealed a good while ago, actually, so there's little chance that it's a joke. The series had been on hiatus so long that I sincerely thought it had gone the way of CLAMP's X/1999.

@Tony: The Professor's design threw me off as well. Who does he think he is, Elvis? :animeswea

They have fingers now. Meh. Whatever. I'm more of a fan of "Samurai Jack." That show was awsome. Geddy should make more. My friends and I used to watch Jack every friday night. Bring him back!
Now that I've seen them with fingers, I can die satisfied. Wait no, I can't; they still DON'T HAVE NOSES OMG *explodes*
Oh, they have noses alright (super-tiny button noses, which is to be expected, but you can see 'em if you squint). :catgirl:

I love their weapons. It looks like a yo-yo for Blossom, a... uh, bubble wand for Bubbles, and Buttercup appears to be holding some kind of wacked-out croquet mallet. The costumes also rock. I suppose transformation sequences are a bit too much to ask for (this isn't exactly Sailor Moon), but that would be the coolest thing ever. I really hope the anime uses longer versions of the English opening and ending songs.

From what I can tell, though, Mojo Jojo has the best character design of the bunch.

Well I just do not know what to think about this. I mean, you say they have noses; and I guess that if I squint I really can see them, but I don't know if they're actually big enough to be called anything other than almost microscopic holes. :all:

I must admit that I like the character designs. Except the professor, looking at him fills me with all kinds of terror when I compare that design to his classic look.

For some reason, I always heard Powerpuff Girls classified as Anime, although American, it was classified as Anime.

I agree with the earlier post, nobody can mess with Powerpuff Girls.
The PPG have a specific style of drawing, existing, and animation. Converting to Anime will be strange.

It looks kind of like Sailor Moon after an acid trip gone horribly wrong. I am not a fan of the PPG's series, but at least this looks better then the American series. As it is, I don't like the idea of remakes being handled in two different countries at once, those whoe have seen G Saviour will know why.

On a side note, is it just me, or does the one on the left (one with the mallet) remind anyone else of Son Goku from Saiyuki in his demonic form? Or am I just nuts?

I found some screencaps at another forum (don't worry; I'm positive they're official), so I attached them to this post. Just be warned that the image is kind of big. Presumably most of the shots were grabbed from the opening sequence.

I really want to see how the other villains will turn out, especially Him.

Well, I must say that this has me a little creeped out. It does remind me of Sailor Moon, and that show drives me insane.

The cutesie way that Bubbles giggles is tolerable with the other two doing so less often... but if they turn it into a Sailor Moon-type-show, they will all be giggling little idiots. *sigh*

And what's with the weapons, anyhow? The PPGs are supposed to be able to kick some serious *ss without using weapons... well, other than Ice Breath and the like, anyhow.

This is so weird! I'm with Godel and r2vq: this just feels blasphemous. I loved the Powerpuffs, but I don't think I'll love them if they're something serious. Certainly, what made the Powerpuff's appealing is definately going to be absent from this rendition.

I'm not saying it's going to be flat-out bad, but it's going to pale in comparison to the original. While it may not be a valid comparison to make should they be going for different things (i.e., comedy vs. action), it's certainly going to be the relative judgement most people will pass down and therefore make this version a flop.

Just my outlook. A bleak one, but still merely a prediction.

This is gonna be interesting...very interesting. The professor doesn't look right and buttercup doesn't give off the badass vibe the PPS one some how does. I don't like the idea of weapons either since they were so powerful on their own without weapons.

Aside from those minor gripes, this looks like it's gonna be an interesting anime that could hit or miss depending on the person.

I just came across some additional screencaps, including (dare I say it?) what looks like a potential transformation sequence. It's really amusing how--at least in this case--American superheroes has translated over to the Japanese concept of magical girls. Not that I'm complaining.

Note the Mojo Jojo close-up, the fact that the Professor now appears to be around the same age as the girls (let's just hope he's not a love interest!) and the simplified backgrounds (which, from what I can tell, are unusual for anime). If nothing else, I think the way the backgrounds are drawn indicates that they're going to keep some small part of the original series in mind when producing this new show.

:animestun OMG! You have to be KIDDING! Powerpuff Girls....as a anime??? That sounds both really weird and very awesome. I mean, it was already partly Japanese, but with american type animation. And look at those pictures! They have hands! Hazzah!!

Hey Dagger, i think you got your wish. It looks like you will be getting a transformation seqence.... which will make it a little too much like Salior Moon. But thats ok. I cant wait to see Salior Moon Z!

How do you even know that they will be going for different things. I hate it when people think "anime=action" and vice versa:animeangr. The original American PPG was actually a pretty good combination of action and comedy. It could tell very action-packed stories but add in natural humor from the characters' personalities and the random refferences and innuendoes. I was in fact pretty annoyed when the last season or two went for obvious flat-out gag stories as opposed to action and subtler humor. And PPGZ seems to be continuing the spirit of the earlier PPG episodes. If PPGZ was trying to be serious it would probably have some dark and detailed designs. Instead we got a bunch of wacky retro-'70s anime designs, which not only shows the comedic spirit being continued but is the perfect stylistic evolution given that PPG's design was mostly '60s-ish Tezuka-styled stuff. Besides, if this is even going to be produced Craig McCracken must approve of it. He was furious about the PPG movie's ad campaign and the recent PPGTeens ads. CN has to play it safe with an entirely new spin-off if they want to keep the success of Craig's new show Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends not delayed by production difficulties caused by Craig being mad at CN for ruining his first baby.

Craig, and Genny. Craig was creator, and Genny was co-creater of the PPG. Along with "Dexster's Labotory". I liked all the comic book, anime, and manga jokes in that show. From Dex's giant robot, The Justice Freinds, and Monkey. Oh, here's an interesting bit of trivia. In "Dial M For Monkey", there was an episode called "Wrasslor" starring WWE superstar "Macho Man" Randy Savage as the voice of Wrasslor. (He even followed up the episode with his catch phrase "OH YEAH!" ) Well, Wrassor was inspired by an issue of "Marvel Comics Showcase". When an intergalatic boxer challeged Earth's strongest heroes (Hulk, Namor, Thor, Thing, etc) to a boxing match for the fate of the world. Thing was the last one, and he was beaten to a pulp. But even beaten, he refused to give up, and The boxer guy was so impressed he spared the Earth. Cool, huh?

Hey wait. I was told that PPG was no longer on the air because Darkseid killed them when they teamed up with the JLA.

If you want to see a short video promo, just go here. According to some of the Japanese fansites, they are magical girls. Yay! Apparently the origin story is also somewhat different--which I'm more dubious about, but it's probably a wise decision for the Japanese writers to not totally imitate the original. The video quality of the clip isn't that good, but the animation looks great despite that.

That was the wierdest thing ever... Bring this show to the states NOW!

Also, I noticed the website mentioned Craig McCracken being one of the top-billed people in production. Now you CAN'T complain about this show.

It looks cool. And the fact that the girls don't wear the same outfits EVERYDAY also makes me happy. Or do they have copies of that same outfit? Otherwise, I will be watching this one and telling my friends and my brother of this thing. Laters!

But...but...the PowerPuff Girls can't get any better than they already are! *teary eyes* This is like someone re-creating Dexter's Lab...which shall never happen, because if it does, I will personally go to the idiot who wants to and beat him up.

Ahem.

Anyways. It does look pretty interesting...although Buttercup doesn't have black hair! *shriek* When I first heard this, I was pretty dissappointed, but I'm sure if it's done right...it could...be...good... :/ *mutter mutter* But knowing that the director of FMA is working on it is cool. :3 (I am such a FMA whore).
