Anime I'm baffled by this: Panties

I have a topic that has been baffling me ever since I saw my first anime with this in it....now I'm not saying this is a bad thing, far from it...but coming from a guy, I'm interested in knowing this:

Why do they show panties so much in anime? I'll target a specific anime that has panties in every single episode...Najica Blitz Tactics...whether an upskirt or just plain underwear, I'm interested...Can anyone answer my question

Well...I was looking at an Anime Insider magazine from my friend and I skimmed by the article...I din't get enough time to read the whole thing, but I did read something about Disney being the first to show ladies underwear(Minnie Mouse)...but that's it, I wanted to read the rest, but the bell rang(I was at school) and I had to leave for Spring break...all through the break, I've been stuck on this subject... so I hit up my pals at theotaku to see if I could get an answer

Apparently, in every Disney movie there is always a shot of a butt (whether it be animal or human). They call it "the butt shot"! (Original name isn't it?)

But the awesome thing about Najica was that all the panty shots were cleverly inserted (clever being a strong word).

The Butt Shot? Interesting... I don't remember seeing any butt shots in disney movies, I guess I don't pay much attention to them though.
Technically, I wasn't aming this thread at Najica, I thought it was a really good series. I was just using it as an example. More examples include: Love Hina Again, Mahoromatic, Da Capo, DearS, and a whole bunch of others that have the so-called "Pantie Shot"... Once again, I'm not against it, I'm just curious why they do it so much

I know that, for instance, the back of the neck is a more sensual spot in Japan than the legs are in the Western world.

Also, censorship rules are very different. You can show nudity, but not a woman's pubic area.

Besides, you've got to remember that most anime created in Japan isn't created with only kids ages 12 and under in mind.[/font][/color]

True...I never looked down on any of that...oh gosh :animesigh why didn't I read the rest of that article...couldn't it be possible to express the same motives without showing the ladies' underwear...and there actually are a lot of animes that don't...Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and one that really baffles me...Inuyasha...Throughout the entire series, Kagome is always wearing some type of skirt, yet her underwear never shows...It's possible that it might be Japanese tradition, who are we to question another culture...please understand, I'm not a pervert, I'm just very curious why

Panty shots = male-oriented fanservice. All of the shows you listed in your previous posts (Najica, Love Hina Again, Mahoromatic, Da Capo, DearS) are, at least to a certain extent, fanservice anime. And all of them are aimed at pretty much the same audience demographic. In general, you can assume that panty shots are supposed to be somewhat titillating, although there are obvious exceptions (i.e. Kiki's Delivery Service).

To echo what I said in the sexism thread: regardless of one's personal experience, it's simply a fact that panty-shot-swamped anime are in the minority.

Have I mentioned that your banner & avatar are both incredibly awesome? Man, I can't wait to see the next volume of Get Backers. Speaking of which, here's another example of clear-cut fanservice--Hevn's entire character design.

To answer your question, panty shots are intended to be sexual (at least the sort shown in Najica are, haha).

Thanx, but all the credit goes to Ozymandius Jones...That guy is a legend...and I found the avatar at google...back to the subject, not only on anime, but also in Manga...Volume 1 of Get Backers, Ban has a conversation with two girls about food...the camera angle is focused behind them, up their skirts..."panty shot"...and the conversation has nothing to do with any sexual theme whatsoever... they were talking about where to eat...It interests why it happens so much...you know personally I think it's for funding...they make a lot of money from guys who are obsessed with anime panties... :grumble: not me

Simple. To give depraved people like me something to amuse ourselves with, in addition to blood, violence, foul language, suggestive themes, and explosions. :D Besides, you can tell a lot about a character by those shots, especially the ones who actually do wear white panties. (And if you don't understand that reference you are not depraved enough)

There is, however, such a thing as too much fanservice, as the anime Ikki Tousen demonstrates in every episode.

It is fun to see how creative the animators are with those scenes. ;)

If you want to see a real fanservicy anime then take a look at Real Bout High School. There is so much fanservice in that show it is incredible. Anyway to my point, I myself am not really interested in Panty Shots even though I am a bloke but I am interested in proper nudity( What??? I had to say). They are appealing to the common man and thats all there is to it. They aren't getting in trouble off of the censors so they will just go ahead with it.

I think that the one reason no one has really brought up so far is the humor value. In scenes like the 'Get Backers' seen described where there is nothing sexual going on but fanservice is included anyway I tend to get a good chuckle. It's kind of a sort of self-parody, methinks. Scenes like that are fanservice, but they are also kind of making fun of fanservice, in a way. The more completely random the fs is, the greater the humor value.

That, and the creators are pervs :p

The only one that I've seen that pushed the limit was Najica. You could actually ignore Ikkitousen's fanservice when you got tired of it, but Najica basically forced you to focus on it if you wanted to watch the action. Ruined a potentially good show, it did.

i personally love the panty shots myself. it really is everywhere and you cant really avoid such a wonderful thing! i dont think that i'll ever get tired of it either. it seems to be getting better and better too.
