Bloodseeker
There's something that's really bothered me with this last generation of games: Most of them can be completed in under 20 hours! The only worthwhile game that I've played recently that gave me over 50 hours was Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. Are there any good, recent RPGs that can give me a good 40+ hours of gameplay? Billy Shears
Well, if you like Strategy/RPG's, you could give La Pucille:Tactics a shot. I heard it was about 150+ hours long. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance took me about 94 hours to get a 100% mission complete, so that can waste your time pretty easily. Diablo II is probably the coolest MMORPG I know of. I don't know how long the single player takes, but my friend and I played online alot over last summer. That game is really fun and has a giant fanbase. If you have any friends, kind of make sure you play in their party, or you might be heckled and called a newb. -the one and only
Kamuro
well, it all depends on how you play the RPG and what system your asking for, as far as PS2 goes there is numerous RPG's that can be played for over 40 hours, I always mention Suikoden 3, just cause, I love it lol, but besides that, there is all the Final Fantasy's, I don't believe any of them could be beaten in under 30 or so hours, and thats not considering all the extra things you can do, Grandia also provides a good challenge that should keep you busy as far as XBOX goes, they've been coming out with some pretty good RPG's lately, at least from my POV, Fable only took me about 15 hours to beat, but after doing sidequests, main quests, getting treasure, a house, a wife, I was definitely over 40 hours, Morrowind took me a pretty long time as well, I don't reccomend it though, it can get frustrating, theres also the KOTOR series which offers some pretty good gaming, I can't promise it'll be over 40, but its well worth checking out, and if you do a good bit of gaming it should be close to
Bloodseeker
I didn't care much for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I couldn't get into the story. Diablo 2 is pretty fun, one of my favorites. I find myself going back to that one a lot. Fable is fun, but really short. Once you know what to do, you can easily beat it in under 10 hours, and get everything in about 25. Morrowind is my favorite game of all time. I've clocked a few hundred hours on it. There's so much to do in those games, it took me those few hundred hours to do everything. Unfortunately, once you get a bit of skill (enough to jump out of the way of magic attacks), get yourself a powerful weapon (you're powerful enough to find and pick up a daedric dai katana by level 5 or so... and that's the best you can get without enchanting) and learn the tricks of the trade (namely, that powerful enchanted items are your best friend), nothing in the original game can stand up to you, not even the "powerful" monsters in the expansion packs. I was a bit dissapointed by Knights of the Old Republic. Good and evil were determined by dailog choices of all things, and your character looked like **** if he was evil. On top of that, it just wasn't an in depth D&D game. I liked Baldurs Gate a lot more. Disgea and La Puculle sound like they might just be what I'm looking for though. I think that I'll check them out.
2010DigitalBoy
Oi seeker of blood! If y own a Gamecube and ye love Star Ocean, buy Tales of Symphonia! 60 hours and a great battle system be inhabitin this game!Jade Empire was jist released yesterday, an that be a one ta ramember! If ya like Diablo and Baulders Gate, try Neverwinter Nights, I cant stand the lil bugger, but it sounds like it'd be right up yer alley. If ya like slammin the A bottum hundreds of time and leveling up like a maniac with 20 charachters, try Gauntlet. A'course, ya oughta wait fer the new one to be released later dis year as the presnt one has the crappiest graphics I ever laid me one real and one fake eye on! Pick yer poison, lad! Bloodseeker
Tales of Symphonia was pretty fun, even if you could see every last plot twist 5-20 hours before you got to it. I guess you could put that alongside Star Ocean as a recent game worth mentioning. I was looking forward to Jade Empire too, but I've been hearing that its only about 20 hours long. Damn. Neverwinter Nights is one of those MMORPGs that you have to pay extra to subscribe to, right? As much as I'd like to play it, I don't have the extra money. Besides, I don't know that my computer would be able to handle a performance game like that. Multiplayer dungeon crawlers like Gauntlet get repetetive after a short while. That's why Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicals isn't sitting on my shelf.
Semjaza
It sounds like you own (or at least have access to) the main systems, so I guess I'll name whatever I can think of. Unfortunately, I can't really remember how long it took me to finish these games, but I remember them being pretty sizable. Skies of Arcadia: Legends - I've heard people have spent 70 hours+ on this getting all the sidequests and stuff. I only bothered with a few, but I remember it being a pretty long game. Personally, I really enjoyed it... far more than on the DC thanks to some fixes. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - The more you put into this, the longer it will take. You have the opportunity to spend lots of time getting and strengthening new demons, plus there are multiple endings and some hidden bosses/dungeons. If you want to do everything, this game will take quite some time to finish... Either way, I'd say the main area of the game is well over 20 hours. Disgaea - Mentioned already, but it's probably the best of the games from the same developer (La Pucelle, Disgaea, Phantom Brave). A lot of time is really spent making and leveling up characters. In addition to the main areas, each item and weapon has its own dungeon inside of it that can be used to awaken its hidden powers... Long game. Very long if you want to do every last thing. Dragon Warrior VII - This one is for the regular Playstation. As much as I love Dragon Warrior in general, I have to admit this game is pretty disappointing on many fronts. What it lacks in flash, however, it makes up for in its sheer amount of things to do. Many people wind up spending between 60 to 100 hours just to finish it. Might be worth trying. That's all I can think of offhand for consoles. I can probably list quite a few more another time. Neverwinter Nights isn't a MMORPG. A large portion of it is completely single player. I've not played it online, but from what I understand you kind of play under someone that controls the world like a dungeon master in the pen and paper D&D. I've never played it online, though, so I can't say much about it. I personally didn't care much for the single player, for whatever reason. There's also Fallout, Fallout 2, Planescape Torment, Divine Divinity, Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate 2 on the PC. They're all good games, in my opinion. PWNED
Well I myself suggest Neverwinter Nights because if you don't rush right through and do every quest for every chaper than it can last you quite a long time. The Online portion is free just as long as you have the money to buy the game to begin with. x kakashi x is right, you can play the Suikoden games for ages if you don't rush through them and I myself abosutely adore them. Also go for any computer RPG like Fallout, Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale.
Sandy
I have to start flagging for Shadow Hearts: Covenant (not just because you don't like it, NPC#3 *winks* ). I'm currently sixty hours into the game and nearing the end, and I've tried to do/find everything I can. Sure, you could perhaps rush the game through in twenty hours, but the bosses (and many regular monsters) being so effing hard, I don't think it is possible (this RPG, like every other, requires some serious level-upping and equipment switching, not to mention the dozens of sidequests to get all the nifty special moves and magic). The reason why you (and everybody) should get this game is the amazing and original storyline, situated to the time of WW1 in a world very much similar to ours. Adding to that, every single (playable) character is unique and fun to play with (okay, I have my favorites, but nobody in the party irritates me). I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the originality of the characters: no fragile healers, no mighty powerful ten-foot-long-sword swingers, no whiny teenage lead... Then there's the gameplay system, Judgment Ring, which is both fun and challenging, and even after sixty hours, I still haven't bored with it (and I still manage to mess up some battles). It's certainly a welcome change to the simple command executing. This is purely my opinion, and if you want another, just ask NPC#3 - he'll tell you the negative aspects he saw in this game. (Yes, I read your review, Semmy.) *** If sixty hours isn't long enough, get into the Final Fantasy scene: the games give you a total of thousands of hours worth gameplay (over 100+ hours each, except the very early games). After playing FFs for the past six years or so, I couldn't settle for a short game - it would feel a waste of my money. So I'm with you, Bloodseeker! Semjaza
You'll have to PM me or IM me sometime and explain how these characters were interesting or engaging. I just do not see it whatsoever, but I know I'm in the minority of people who have played it from all I have read. Instead of a whiny teenage male lead you get Yuri, who I honestly just never felt was much better. Maybe I needed to play longer, but I think fifteen hours was enough. I'll probably pop it in again sometime. I'm willing to accept that I just wasn't giving it enough of a chance. I don't think the game was bad, I just don't think everything adds up to it being much more than average. It just never really grabbed my interest. Maybe I was in a bad mood that week, what do I know? lol I'm genuinely interested in what it is I am missing in this game heh. Anyway, I am very interested in a reply to any of my complaints over the game elsewhere since this isn't the best place. Regardless, it is a long game, so I guess it is worth suggesting in here. As for FF games, I really don't know why in the world it takes some people so long to finish them, but I guess everyone is different.
QuincyArcher
If you're looking for a console RPG, any of the classics made by Sqauresoft would work like Chrono Trigger or FFV or FFVI for the Snes. Also any of the PS1 titles by square are good as well like FFVII, FFVIII or FFIX. But if you really want something with literally endless amounts of replay value, i would have to suggest an MMORPG. I personally play FFXI which is available on both PS2 and PC (that is if you're willing to pay the monthly fee.) and I just checked my current playtime on FFXI earlier today and (although its not something i should be particularly proud of) i've already put in over 25 days worth of play (thats right, over 600 hours of active playtime.) and im a fairly moderate player, my brother has put in well over 50 days of playtime. which says a lot for the game as well as the genre itself. Gelgoog Pilot
I'll suggest a good game I found out took loads ot time...ok well a couple...most of the ones from the other two consoles were mentioned as well as some from the GameCube. I'd suggest, since you're looking for some serious play time, Gladius. Basically its a world like ours back when Rome ruled over most of the European continent. Here you will take over the gladiator school of your father. When I first popped it in I figured it'd be a 30 hour game. It turns out..this game could take you 50 + easily I still haveen't beaten it but that was because I had a faling out with it (I won't tell you why though). Another good game although a bit repetative is Phantasy Star Online I & II for GameCube...no you don't need an internet connection just to play it like the stupid Xbox version. And you can invite 3 of your friends to hack/slash with you. Pretty similar to the Dreamcast ones but the graphics are a little sharper and some new stuff was put into the game. Also the Extreme difficulty is fun as hell! lol With 200 levels to gain experience for Im sure you can waste plenty of energy over this one :animestun
Erika
If you want an actual LONG RPG...and trust me on this...play Dragon Warrior VII. I haven't played it in a long time, but I know for a fact that I'm not off Disc 1, and it's clocked at 100-hours or something. And yes, I have a bad habit of leaving my game on for God knows how long, but it doesn't happen often at all, so the 100-something hours (or 90-something) is mostly the actual game part. But I love RPGs that are literally long. I too often hear "this game can be clocked at about 60-70 hours!" Wait, are you including the sidequests? If so, shut up.

Ragnarok
litterally the longest rpg to complete is Morrowind. It has 350+ hours tied to it with the expansions, 250 without. It took me about 3 months to beat the first time. The first time! Thats how good it is. I've been playing on different characters since 2003. If you need a solid good rpg get morrowind, also available on PC.
Guest Lost_Heart
A good game for PS2 is crono cross. It doesn't have GREAT graphics, but I really like it. It has a good plot and it's as long as any :animestun My brother has started playing it. He's been playing for about 60 hours and he's only on the first disk (theres two) It's interesting, at first you're Sirge...
than it switches and you're his enemy Link.
It's quite confusing but it's exellent for expressing point of views. Gavin
Well the Knights of the Old Republic games to fully complete take about 100 hours each, although since I haven't beaten KOTOR 2 fully yet it could be more. Apart from the KOTOR series there's also he Final Fantasy games which take a good 40 hours to complete just going through the game at an average pace without searching for all the side-quests, completing most of the games with all the trimmings takes up to and over 100 hours each. So take a chance at that if you want longer games. I don't play many RPGs apart from KOTOR and Final Fantasy but I hope I've been a help.
theres also the KOTOR series which offers some pretty good gaming, I can't promise it'll be over 40, but its well worth checking out, and if you do a good bit of gaming it should be close to 40
My first game of Knights of the Old Republic took me roughly 27 hours in total to complete, although that was on the Light Side and it does skip certain side-quests. However to get everything out of KOTOR would take a full four games, one for each gender and side, which at about 23 hours a go would take about 92 hours, give or take a few minutes. Although really all you're doing there is exploring character relationships and storylines.

Desbreko
Four words: Go read a book. :flush:
A while ago I might have agreed with this, but now I've got several hours of reading to do for school most days. So yeah, reading's great ... but I can only sit and read books for so long before I start to want to do something else, no matter how good the book may be. So I've found RPGs are a nice way of getting a decent story (most of the time) while doing something interactive. Personally, though, I don't see the problem with "short" RPGs. Two of my favorite RPGs, Chrono Trigger and FFIV, can both be completed in under 20 hours. Yeah, I like getting a lot of gaming time for my money, but if an RPG is good, it's good regardless of how long it is. I don't really think length influences the quality of an RPG, so long as it's not extremely short -- say, at least 10 hours. But as for recommendations, I can't really say. I've been playing catch-up with some older RPGs that I missed, like Skies of Arcadia Legends, so I haven't bought a new (at the time) RPG since FFTA.
Kiowanman21
I would suggest The Legend of Dragoon. That's probably the longest game I've ever played. Truth be told, I never finished it. :animeshy: To anyone who has: Please tell me how the story ends? Anyways, the games story is really awesome. Along with the great gameplay and the cool, challenging bosses, it's probably my favorite older game. (It's for PS1) And it has 4 disks, so you know it's long. I would definitely suggest this game. The only downside is the graphics in the game are bad in some places. (when you're traveling) But the pros totally make up for it.

I've gone up to around 50 with them and as little as 30. It just depends on how far you want to get into the story and the side plots. Both games are excellent though and will get you hooked. KOTOR is crack.
Ryo the Tactician
I have no systems save my GBA, DS, and PC. So I have a more portable view on the whole RPG matter. 1) Golden Sun 1 and 2. Yes, they are shortish in RPG standards as they go. However, they have EXCELLENT storylines, a solid battle system, and on a whole are lots of fun. Combine them to make the basic full game, and you've got at the very very least 40 hours of Gameplay, unless you rush through both. Link your file over. 2) Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls: The retro thing is pretty cool, but these games..a little too retro. Though they're Final Fantasy, the pale in comparison to GS1and2 because of little plot and absolutedly no character development. You simply have no idea who the characters are at the end of the game. 2 was better than 1 in my opinion, though. 3) Megaman Battle Network: I enjoyed the 1st one I played, which was the 2nd. Good and fun, but for the more experienced and well played RPGer, you'll probably be bored soon with this one. Fun, but once you've played one, you've played them all. All I can think of off hte top of my head.
GuyYouMetOnline
Well, if you don't mind spending the better part of an hour on a single boss fight (then having to do that fight twice in a row later in the game), Namco's Baten Kaitos should keep you bust for a long time. Of course, this is assuming that you can sit through a story even worse then the cliche-ridden, easily predictable plot of Namco's previous RPG, Tales of Symphonia (also a nice long RPG experience). I didn't like TOS's plot at all, and the characters were just as bad. Well, except for Presea. That girl's awesome. Anyways, Baten Kaitos has a very bad story, with just as many cliches as TOS's, and the same bad characters. Unfortunatly for the cast of Baten Kaitos, that game has no Presea (Mizuti tries her best to fill the gap, but doesn't quite pull it off). Actually playing the game is great, though, and the characters are much cooler in battle, especially Lyude. The battle system itself is very enjoyable, as are some of the dungeons. This game has some very inventive dungeons, especially when you're in Mira. Bottom line: Baten Kaitos is a fun game to play, even if the plot and characters suck. You just have to be able to sit through the horrible plot and a couple unnecessarily (sp?) long boss battles. If you can do that, this game will keep you entertained for a long time.
