Latharix_sama
I'm going to get myself a black kitten in about six weeks and I'm confused on what I will name him. As I got to thinking about it I wondered what other otaku name their pets and if it was difficult for them to find the perfect name. So that's my question: What are your pets' names? It would also be nice if you could suggest a good name for a male black cat! :catgirl: Here are my pet names: Ben (dog) Lucky (dog) Max (dog) These were long before I turned gothic and became an otaku, though... I'd like to name my cat Alucard or Ulrich... :animesigh ....
KittyLynn
The only advice I can give, is that you shouldn't decide until you get the kitten, because you'll notice that they'll suit a certain name. Deciding beforehand messes you up when you realize that the kitty doesn't suit it. Unless you don't care if they suit it or not. I do though, I've got a Petey (doggy), a Piper, a Toby, a Takita, a Nickle and a Cobalt (all cats) and a Cinni (ferret), a Hiren(my precious goldfish), and Jack and Sally (the mice) and I haven't named the babies. - Kittoo
IceWolfEyes
Well, over the years, I've had quite a few pets. Never have I named an animal before I got it, and often my Dad renamed my pets, lol. I have 3 cats; a black female named Screech (my dad renamed her cus she never shut up as a kitten). The name suits her so well, it's kinda scary. A female orangish calico named Cally (from my mom, she has a really odd sence of appropriate pet names. She once named a male collie Rusty Redbird...sigh) And the cat has no personality, so I feel the name fits, lol. And my baby kitty, grayish whitish calico name of Neko. Dad is trying to rename him Rocky, meh. Neko sounds angry when shouted, and makes the cat stop whatever it's doing, heh. Eating tape, pushing stuff off other stuff, clawing my feet in the middle of the night, etc... As for the other pets in the house... A female mutt (lab and golden) named Maddie. Name is from my Gran, taken from one of Shakesphere's (however ya spell it) plays. Really suits her, I think. Sweet, sweet puppy. (okay, so she's not a puppy. I call her that anyway :P) And last but not least, a pink ring-necked dove name of Romsca. I named him from a book I loved as a child. And the dove is a complete *** like the character in the story, lol. All in all, should wait to name the cat until ya get it. See what it does and volla, the name presents itself to ya. Kamuro
Well, if its black, and you want a generic name then just choose something that fits. Shadow, Night, Coal, etc. If not, then just choose something random that you like, or something that fits the cat's personality when you get it. AzureWolf
For pets (and humans even), I prefer descriptive names rather than something random. You know, a name that also describes what the animal looks like. That way, when you talk about it, there's no confusion as to whether you are talking about someone or a pet. You can even get a little creative with the names. For instance, I have (or had, before he found a mate) one brown-colored dove, and dubbed him Chocolate.
JenniKate
Alucard is a good name, but it's true that no matter what name you come up with - as soon as you see the kitten you will change your mind! My cat's have been: Sam - named by her first owner, goodness knows why! Smokey - he's a grey and white and it took us a month to name him Pickles - when he was little he was always 'in a pickle' and it stuck Radical Edward - he was a ginger with huuuge eyes and lighter fur around them that looked like goggles, he made me think of Ed from Cowboy Bebop :) My friends black cat is koneko : named when her sisters boyfriend - who is Japanese - called out koneko to it and it went to him Other friends have two black dogs, licquorice and voodoo which I think are pretty cool names for black animals. You'll have to let us know what you call it :animesmil
elfpirate
I like to wait and see what kind of a personality a certain pet has before I give them a name. Right now, I have 2 cats: Ash --named after Ash from the Evil Dead series, because he's always getting himself into some painful, brutal situation... Pippin --so named for the long legs (Ent draught) and propensity for mischief... and 2 rats: Pele --named after the goddess for her temperament and her lava-rock-coloured coat Moonlight --(not named by me) named for her blue-grey coat and softness In the past, there have been cats named "Chairman Meow" and a black cat I dubbed "Azrael" because I thought he was a bit evil...and "Delilah", for the same reason. I had a rat I named "spork" because she was insane, and I thought that "spork" was suitable for something as crazy as that rat was, and another one I called Phydeaux, because when he was a baby, he looked a bit like a puppy. I think it works well to observe the pet for a while 'till you find a name that suits its personality or, as others have said, one that describes their features well.
SunfallE
Personally I prefer full names for my pets instead of short ones. My last Dog was Mariska and the dog I have now is Aaryanna. I also have a cat named Alexander. Usually what I do before getting a pet is find three or four names I really like and then once I get the pet I see which one fits them the best. Before I got Aaryanna I had decided on either Kendra, Celestia, or Aaryanna. Once I got her Aaryanna just seemed to fit. :animesmil My brother did the same with the cat. Though since he loves to chew on everything I added a middle name of Lucifer since he always has an evil look in his eyes. :animesigh
Latharix_sama
Well, you see, the mother cat is my neighbor's so I can see my cat any day I want to. I just have to wait until he can be separated from his mom. What personality he has now is a lazy one, while the others are pretty active. :animesmil He's just like me lol! He really does seem to suit the name Ulrich more than Alucard, cos Ulrich is a really lathargic demon. You are right though, I should wait to see if this is just a stage he's going through and find out what his true personality is. Heh, my dad has named every one of my pets. lol, imagine a five year old me with tears in my eyes saying, "No! Daaaaaaadyyyy!!!! I wanna name him Scruffy! Not Ben! Scruffy! Scruuuuuuuuuffffffyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!" at this point I turned blue and was taken inside, lol. But since Dad isn't around, I get to name him. I want something really special. Maybe a Gothic, or pagan name (ex: Ulrich (a demon)). Or maybe an anime one, or a japanese one (ex: Kuroneko, Kamineko, and Alucard). :animesigh so may names........so few right ones....so many wrong ones.... Minako
Well, my family breeds giant schnauzers (and miniature schnauzers) and we usually give them Finnish names (We're Finnish. meaning we come from Finland) but I DO have a dog and 2 cats of my own! My animals: The Dog, Lissu (said Lee-sue) I was thinking of a name and my dad thought of it and it just stuck. I spoil her. heh heh. My Mafia leader cat, Fluffy. Well, when he was small we didn't know if he was a boy or a girl (we found out from the vet he was a boy :animeswea ) and Fluffy was a neutral name. He sheds a lot too, so the name fits. And yes, he's the leader of the Cat Mafia. The dumb side-kick cat, Ally. WELL, when he was small, we thought he was a girl :animeswea heh heh. The name just stuck. To make him more masculine, I decided that his official name is Alexander Timothy. Ally for short. Sorry bud! Our other dogs: *NOTE: some of these have either passed away or given to new homes. Paavo Junnu Iiro Sally Riiviö Penni Lilli Siiri Huli (Hulivili or lovingly called Hulina Vilinä) Elli Peikko Tricka Minnie Mickey (heh heh) Chubby (heh heh, he's now called Draco) Nette Ruusa Kimi Anna (passed away as a puppy at a week old *sniff*) Etc. There are a few exceptions to the Finnish name thing but that's because they came with that name, but in the case of Chubby, it just stuck. Sage is going to laugh when he sees some of these names. heh heh.
Skye
I have a black cat. We didn't name our cats until we got them, but we didn't use descriptive names. ^_^; Nicholas/Nicky/Nick/Fritz/Fritzer (Nicholas Fritz Putz Cat): Yes, our animals have tons of nicknames. I won't list them all, though. Nick started out as a black cat, though now he has aprtially white tummy, and white hairs here and there. He's our oldest cat, and our first. We call him our medicine cat, because when someone is ill, if you're lying down, he'll come lie on your chest, and purr you to sleep. Henry/Hen/Henneneroo (Henry Henible Spot): This one is a orange tabby, and our lap cat. He is the sweetest cat of the bunch, and the loudest, and he likes to play in and out with the door. -.-; Isabelle/Isabo/Bobo (Miss Isabelle Thing): She is our only female cat, and a calico. She's Henry's sister, and loves to be petted. But that is all she'll let you do. I am her person, I am the only person she will let pick her up. Anyone else she turns into a whirling firball of doom. She has sharp things on all five corners. -.- Cameron/Cam/Cammy/Cameroon/Cammy-cam/Cammers (Cameron Blue-eyes): This cat belongs to my brother. He is a grey tabby, and the youngest of all our pests - erm, I mean, pets. ^_^; He loves lying on his back like a possom playing dead, and you try to rub his tummy and he'll grab your hand. Beauty Belle Froglet Hypertension Chewtoy/Belly-dan/Belldandy/Beautybelle: This is my moms dog. We originally got her for my brother, but she attached herself to mom instead. She's a terrier, black, almost salt-and-pepper colored, but with a tons more black than anything. We think she might be Cairn terrier and something else. Lancelot/Lance/Lancers/Lancir(Lan-seer)/Lancer-lot: This is my baby. He's as sweet as can be, and huge, but he thinks he's a lap dog. He's a lab-collie mix, and the color of pine saw dust. He is a love bug, and a wonderful dog. So those are my pets. ^_^ My friend has three cats, a grey tabby named Archemedes, like the owl from Sword in the Stone, Sabastian, named after the crab from Little Mermaid and an orange tabby, and lady who is a black and white girl cat.
Semjaza
My first dog was a husky named Ace. He loved girls and hated boys. One day he just ran away and I don't think anyone missed him. He was very erratic. He was replaced with a mutt that we also named Ace (kids that young don't have great imaginations when it comes to names, apparently). We eventually got a St. Bernard named Harley. However, Harley wasn't exactly smart and one day both he and Ace got out. Ace came back, Harley did not. Eventually Ace disappeared as well... somehow the gate opened in the middle of the night. When we moved we bought a purebred golden labrador that we named Amber. We still have her now, although she's getting pretty old at this point. I've had various other pets. A guinea pig named He-Man, for example. A gecko named Yoda. I went through a couple of ferrets, named Sable and Kit, before I fully realized what a pain in the *** they were (both were given to people who had more time). I also had a couple of rats named after Marilyn Manson members: Pogo and Twiggy. Twiggy was always kind of sickly and one day she just seemed really sad and fragile. I somehow just knew she was dying, so I held her and petted her until she passed away. Pogo lived a good deal longer, although the method of her death was pretty upsetting. One day she just wasn't moving anymore. Since then I've gotten two cats, Napoleon and Ava. Napoleon is the gray one; we think he is a Chartreux. Ava is the other one, who knows what she is. They're both very well behaved and love attention from us and anyone else. They're really more like dogs than cats. Gavin
Well my family has had a good dozen pets over the course of my childhood so I can't really remember all their names. Still I'll try and make a go of it. Jessie [Dog]: Well as I implied, Jessie was a dog, a black cross-breed sheepdog/ Labrador to be exact, and she was the first dog I ever owned. She had five or six pups if I remember correctly, although this is going back probably seven or eight years so I can't really remember. She got hit by a car on the road a while after having the pups and had to be put down. Snowie [Dog]: One of the pups from Jessie, he was a white Labrador, at least he had more Labrador in him that sheepdog. He was probably my favourite pet because he showed me a lot of affection during a bad part of my childhood, he used to always run up to meet me after school. Like Jessie he was hit by a car and had to be put down, although I didn't learn that for a number of years. Max [Dog]: One of my most recent pets, Max was no relation of the other two dogs because we got him from a cousin. Max, or Maximus to give him his proper name was a cross breed Springer Spaniel/Red Setter, and he was as loony as a... very loony creature. Good hearted dog, but he was hard to keep because he like the other dogs used to chase cars, a few years ago he was also hit by a car. I really need to put up a fence in the garden for our dogs. Biggs [Cat]: A cat, and the farthest back cat who's name I can still remember. His name came from the character in Star Wars, although as I later learned he was a she, although I still referred to her as him. A normal tabby cat, he was got along with four others to catch mice around the house, although my siblings and I took to them immediately and made pets out of them. A nice cat, but not very friendly, he wanted things on his terms or not at all, he also had a nasty tendency to stick his claws in your back. Went missing when we went on holidays. Des [Cat]: Or Dirty Essio to give him his proper name, he was Bigg's bigger brother and although not actually my pet I developed a great soft spot for him. Des used to lay out on the ground most of the day either resting or waiting to be fed, he was a very friendly cat and would always be looking to be petted when you were around him. Like Biggs, Des went missing one year when we were on holidays. Tony [Cat]: Called after my departed granduncle, Tony was probably my favourite cat, and second favourite pet overall. I found Tony in a ditch near the cow crush one evening a few years ago, he had been meowing for a few hours before I could find him. When I actually went and got him he barely fit in my hand he was so small, he was an orange, very furry tabby and took a while to tame as he was one of the wild cat's kittens. Tony was always more fur than cat, but he was also a very friendly and nice cat, in ways he was like a smaller, furrier version of Des, although slightly more energetic. He disappeared a few months back and most of my family believes he was stolen, although I reckon he could have wandered off somewhere and been accidentally hit. Those are pretty much all my pets, at least the ones I'm old enough to remember.
Panda
I am in the camp that you name pets after they let you know what name best suits them. Working in vet med I have seen soooo many pets with the names that were pre-picked before the pet was adopted. These pets seemed to have names that just didn't jive with their personalites. Example: A 5 pound toy poodle who was very sweet, sickly, but loved to be around little kids and other animals: Killer. All my co-workers, as well as myself, felt that name was just not right. Let me tell you about my "kids"... Ana Ng: "Her voice is like a backward record..." So if you guest I named my Siamese cat after a They Might Be Giants song. Listen to the song lyrics and pretty much it sums up who Ana is. If you have heard a Siamese Cat "talk" you know they don't meow, they scream. She is Siamese if you please...she is Siamese if you don't please but she'll smack you upside the head until you do please!! Ana Ng = Pure evil in cat form. She will steal your soul if you aren't careful. She has run screaming out of the bedroom just to attack Brynner. Apparently her knowing he exists annoyed her enough to cause her to run from across the house to scratch him. Brynner: "etc...etc...etc.." He is named after Yul Brynner. I am a huge Yul Brynner fan...abs of steel...sexy. So Brynner is a mixed breed dog I adopted. One of 12 in a litter his mom was shot by a rancher and the babies needed homes. I picked the biggest, most annoying one out of the litter to bring home. He weights about 100 lbs. He is pretty much a "Bear of little brains". Big lovable teddy bear of a dog. If you were to look into his head there would be a flickering lightbulb with a moth flying around it. He can't think and pant at the same time. Ask him to get a toy, he will stop panting, think hard, then go get it. lol Brynner also goes by Bun-Bun, Boo Bears, Bear Buns, Boja Bos. Mostly just Buns. Heston: "Solent Green is people!!" He is named after Charlton Heston. Rescue dog I brought home from the vet clinic. He was abused and afraid of men. There was no way he would make it in a regular home. He is a mix breed as well. He only weighs about 80 lbs. He is colored like the Grunty that you see Tsukasa riding in the begining of .hack//SIGN. Yellow and brown and shaped like a Grunty. Heston also goes by Grunty and the more formal Mr. Heston. Harrison: Nope, not named after Harrison Ford, he is named after Rex Harrison. He is the actor who played the original Dr. Doolittle. Harrison is an orange tabby cat who, like Dr. Doolittle, gets along with ALL the creatures in my house...even Ana. Harrison is yet another rescue pet from the vet clinic. He was brought in by a client since they thought he had broken legs. He was actually born with a birth defect and has really short twisted front legs. Heston is his best friend and they hang together all the time. Nothing like watching the dogs groom Harrison. Kinda gross since Harrison's head is always slobbered on. lol Harrison is also known as: Something Orange, Meh, Bowling Pin (he likes to stand on his hindlegs, it makes him look like a bowling pin), Penguin (same reason as the bowling pin name). Pretty much we just call him Meh. For you movie buffs out there you will notice a link between the names. In the movie "The King and I" the lead role is played by Yul Brynner. He is the King of Siam, Ana (my cat) is Siamese...the name of the teacher in "The King and I" is Anna also. Yul Brynner played in several movies with Charlton Heston. Rex Harrison was the first actor to play the role of the King of Siam in the movie "Anna and the King" which was the first version of "The King and I". Phew! Somehow we managed to find a way to link all the pets names together! lol Now going back to what I said earlier, pick a name that best suits the pet. Names picked out before hand may not always fit the personality of the pet. :catgirl: Edit: I just had to add a picture of Harrison and Heston. I'm such a proud "mom". Latharix_sama
Update!!!!! I have decided on Alucard! I was talking to my neighbor about names and it just stuck with her, they've been calling my cat "Alucard" for days now. So I guess I'll have to use it since he's used to it. Ohh! The mommy cat ran off so they have to feed them by hand. And Alucard is drinking so much! I'm so proud! He's either going to be my big strong kittycat or my big fat kittycat, and I don't care which! Arigato mina sai! <<<< :D
Godelsensei
I have a black cat, myself, though I didn't get to name him. (Some acquaintances found him in their back yard, named him, then asked us if we wanted to take him in.) So, Zack, it is. We usually refer to him as "Zackie", though, since cats naturally respond better to names ending in "ee". (It's true, though I haven't the faintest as to why.) He has a host of other nicknames, like "Zackadoodle" and "Zackaroo" and "Little Bastard", as my dad calls him when he tears up the furniture. ^^" Anyway, I would have probably named him something with a little more oomph, had it been up to me. Holden-Antonio or something snazzy like that. : ) If you want to learn more about naming cats, you should look into TS Elliot.
