myO/OB Summit

I have noticed that here on myOtaku and OtakuBoards are many really cool people. I'd love to meet them in real life, but they live all over the place. Having seen on deviantart.com that they are having (had?) a summit for deviants to meet each other (for a price of course).

I thought, it would be really spiffy if I could meet a whole mess of people from myO/OB in one spot. In essence, a myO/OB summit (my subject line.). If you charged the goers a fee, then the money could be used to set up the summit itself and the profits could go to make myO/OB even cooler than before.

There could possibly be art booths for people willing to sell prints/original pieces and such, anime/manga booths, drawing seminars, cg seminars, or whatever you guys can come up with..

Just a suggestion...

This is a great idea, but I think the cost would probably be too prohibitive for our little network. At the moment we are all over the place, working furiously behind the scenes on new projects and the broader future.

However, I do know that several members have met at different times. These meetings have taken place at pre-existing anime conventions. So it may be a good idea to find out about local conventions and to try to get a group of people together for a visit.

One day, though, it may be possible to hold our own summit or public event. I just think it's a bit prohibitive to do all by ourselves, at least for the time being. But it's very cool to see people meeting up at anime conventions - the pictures are always great. ^_^

Interesting, most interesting.

It's definitely something that would be fantastic if it could be done, but many of OB's members live in different countries to one another and the travelling costs would be pretty high. There are a load of people from OB I'd love to meet in real life, Annie, Corey, Jordan, Bill, Alex, Craig, Andrew, James, Jamie, Sean, the list is a fair distance in length. I like the idea but financially it probably wouldn't be feasible for many members.

I was talking to Unborn Lord Xion a while back about something similar to this. I know DevART has pretty much gone all out on their summit; I probably should have looked into it further.

ULX and I were talking about an OB Convention, of sorts. It wouldn't have to be expensive, though it would probably end up costing certain members quite a bit of money to travel to the location. It would be great if eventually there were enough funds to set up a one-week event or something for just the Otaku Boards and theOtaku members.

I'm sure that after a couple of years a lot of people would have heard of the OB and may even sponsor a large event like this? Hey, James, you may create a whole new event for people to come and enjoy. It could reach the dizzying heights of E3 and Anime Expo. ^_~

To be honest, I think it's an implausible idea. Deviantart for one makes money; they sell memberships, they have advertisers and lots of traffic, and they sell prints. They're doing quite well for themselves, and even though it costs people to fly to the summit and stay there, it's costing DA a lot to run as well. In the end though, they're there for creative purposes, and to give DA even more exposure.

Now, take a look at OB's or mO's client base. Actually, client isn't even the word. We're a free membership. But, not only that, many of us are under 18, and consequently, would probably be unnallowed to fly across the nation/world to meet up with people from an internet site. Not without parents at least. And when you factor that in, along with air-fares, hotel expenses, food.....it's not going to happen on a big scale. Nor, indeed, any OB-run scale.

I agree with Baron. It's a great idea, but rather implausable for the small-ness of the community. If you want to meet up with anyone, arrange it privately. I know that tons of OBers are going to Anime Expo, if you were interested. =)
I'd go if the moderators were to get real mod rods and could walk around smacking people who cause trouble.
Heh I have to admit Des that if we did all meet up in real life, and the mods did have genuine rods then I think they'd be a bit reluctant about hitting people with them. It's one thing to be a Moderator on OB, but it's be a whole different thing to be one IRL, some Moderators might think twice about going to hit someone 6'2" with a rod. I know it was probably just a joke but it might have some interesting consequences.

Something that could put a person on the floor and keep them down for a few minutes. It would be like a temporary ban, after a warning smack or two.

I just had to laugh as I read that, when you said rods I was thinking more along the lines of police truncheons but I think the cattle-prod idea would work much better and have far funnier results. Though I can say with experience that a shock from one of those cattle-prods sting like heck, damn my little brother to hell with his mischief.
Who wants this wussy 'shock-rod' stuff though, I mean, really. One little zap and you wake up feeling all refreshed. If it doesn't leave a bruise, its not effecive. Out with the extendable truncheons.
Who says the rod itself has to leave a bruise? I can always just kick them while they're down if I'm feeling particularly mean.
