Best place in town!

Okay, you MUST provide a picture to go with your reply! If you haven't got a digital camera/scanner, just try googling the location.

Where do you live, and what's the best place to go in the city?

I live in San Francisco, and my favourite place to go is Haight St. It's pretty famous, supposedly where 'hippies' came from. It's a great place to shop - I go here for clothes as I hate seeing other people wearing the same clothes as me. The stores here sell a variety of stuff, from unique styles of clothes to hair dye to random stuff [like this huge collection of pez dispensers, lunch boxes, toys, art supplies, rare CD imports, etc]. Umm it's also famous for selling bongs and pipes, lol. In fact, there's always one store that sells 'em on every block. But there's a lot to look at, and it's fun. The food places there are pretty spiffy, too. Annnd if you're Buddhist, you're in luck. There's a bunch of stores where you can get all this meditation-related candles, insense, chimes, and etc.

I go there once a week, and I always see something new. Local bands post their flyers all over that street's posts... there's always a bunch of buskers that actually sound nice [as opposed to Chinatown]... It's hard to feel out of place. I can't go to Macy's with pink hair, but if I go to Haight, I'll see like, three other people with pink hair and a million others with cool hair styles. If you're ever in San Francisco, go there and get a haircut. All salons there are great.

I just wouldn't suggest taking the usual grandparents or conservative aunt/uncle who would prefer seeing the Golden Gate bridge. I honestly don't know why tourists come all the way to San Fran to see the bridge. -.-

Oh, but because I'm lazy, I googled for pics. I'll try and get some photos next time I'm there.

I live in La Puente, California, and the best place to go in town is...

...okay, not really.

Mostly we're just like any other town - kind of boring, not very many good places to go. I guess that the best hangout would be J&B's, which is the local burger joint. Everywhere else sucks, though. I like it here because it's quiet, not because of the the entertainment. :p

The best place in my town of Bend Oregon is the Domino Room. A place to party hard complete with punk and heavy metal local bands, moshpits, and refreshments.
I have one pic of a concert ad to the domino room

I also have their hosts site which is mostly circled around the domino room:

Yep, that's the coolest place in my town. If your ever in the Central Oregon area come by there.

Well the town I live in has nothing, and I do mean nothing, no movie theater or anything. Just a local pool and park. So the best "place in town" for me is not in town. Unless we get together at my house to watch movies or something. But mostly me and my friends like to go to the closest national park for hiking and fun. And one of the closest is Arches National Park.

Edit: I fogot to mention that if we want to go somewhere in town then we have to travel around 20 miles to reach a movie theater and 45 to get other places like dance clubs and such.

Let me start off my post with a nice, warm I hate tourists. I mean, who doesn't? They flock to your city, act annoying, lack courtesy, clog up all your spots you want to hang out at, and make life miserable.

I live in DC, and the cherry blossom festival just passed. They were beautiful, but I was too busy fending off the tourists. Go back to Montana and Vermont! Haha. So here's a picture of mine from then.

And a rather cool shot of my city. Although I didn't take this one.

There is a few important things to say about my town called Santa Rosa. One it is the last home of the famous Charles Shultz owner of the comics "Peanuts". Infact his kids were raised here and he lived here when he died. His studio is around here and his ice arena where he use to visit at every show. Everyone over here is almost obsessed with Charlie Brown, its strange.

Another thing is the man who played Timmy from the show Lassie in the olden days is alive and is working here in our city. Everyone knows he lives here and he lives up in the hills. There is also alot of Luther Burbank places, Luther Burbank was a man who was a herbalist and would mix fruit and came up with alot of fruits that we didn't have in the past. I forget which ones he made, something like mangos or such. I'll have to look that up later ^^ pictures below.

Urg. So you were one of them who ate the food, took up space, and hogged the view of MY CITY's cherry blossoms? Haha.

"If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?" I'm sure you've seen this quote on a bumper sticker before. It mimics my feelings exactly.

As for people watching, they do provide ample entertainment. Walking through the crowd, jostling them as they glance at their city map and try to make out where they are. Every now and then, at appropriate intervals, my friends and I let out a "I hate tourists..." and proceed to grumble. The reaction is always different. ^_^

Well, seeing as half of San Francisco speaks broken English, it's hard to tell. It's fun pretending to be tourists, though. I'll go to one of my hometowns and ask random people where random places are and see if they know where it is. I don't know where that famous building in San Francisco is. I mean, I can walk to the best spot to see the Golden Gate from, buuuuut I don't even know what that building is called! Same deal with my friends who've lived here a bit longer than I have [three years]. Touring your own city can be interesting, though. Just to see how boringly your own city's represented...

Hmm. And I swear I kicked myself in the *** for confusing London Bridge with Tower Bridge when I lived in Paddington for four months. ._.

Here is some info about the cool places in my little hometown.

"These dunes are dark because they are made of mostly basalt sand. Basalt is the dark, iron-rich volcanic rock found in places like Hawaii and Iceland. Much of Central/Eastern Washington State is covered by the Columbia River Basalts. Toward the end of the last Ice Age, these basalts were eroded in the catastrophic Spokane Floods. These floods deposited much sand near Moses Lake; and this sand has since been reworked by wind to make dunes."

Pretty much if you are into quads, dirt bikes or other types of ATV's the Dunes are the place you want to be in Washington State. We get tons of tourists to visit the dunes. The lakes here are very popular for water sports and outdoorsmen.

The Grant County International Airport is on my list since this is where my daddy works! He works at the Japan Airlines Flight Training Facility. When I stop by to visit him I can have free range to check out the planes, including all the new Boeing planes before the head over to Japan. Planes, like cars, have that "new" scent to them.

The office also has a library that all the employees and their family bring books and magazines to share with each other. That means manga too! Free manga that hasn't been released in the states, it's in Japanese of course, but you can't beat that!

The picture above is of the ash clouds over Moses Lake in 1980. Moses Lake got an incredible amount of ash when Mt. St. Helens erupted back in May of 1980. You can still find pockets of ash laying around in fields. That in itself is kinda cool since it's not everyday a volcano dumps tons of ash on your house in Washington state!

Moses Lake is a pretty fun little town if you like being in the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, water sports, the Sand Dunes...heck, there is a great rock climbing area just 45 minutes away. If you are looking for the "night life" or "high culture"...ML is not the right town. We pretty much have farmers, ranchers and the like.

This is rather unrelated, and bordering on spam, but it's too good to not post.

I had a dream I went to San Fran, to this street you were talking about and ended up meeting you in person. The graffiti wall's colors were all swirling about, so eventually I collapsed on the ground from vertigo. You kinda walked off, and when I awoke fifteen minutes later, I was in my school. That's where the dream gets off topic. Heh.

I myself think that DC's all hype. I mean, sure, we're the nation's capital, but go too far in the wrong direction from the "nice" places, and you're in shady territory. It's not that nice of a place, but feels at home to me. ^__^

Well, Retri's first post pretty much covers everything I would have said. So you won't be seeing any snazzy new pictures from me.

I like DC well enough. The weather isn't that great (too muggy in summer, not cold/snowy enough in winter, and masses of pollen in spring), but it's a pretty nice place to live, all things considered. Although I am hopelessly Metro-impaired, which can make things a little difficult. :animeswea

i dwell within my brain, alone, alone
and i am far from lonely
it actually is quite homely

you see, my mind is my heart
full of arteries, capillaries,
so many streets of blood
and then there is imagination st.
it is a place i visit often
dreaming as i dream
in it i am

it is there i exist
outside, reality is abusive
slaps me back and forth
bruises me, makes me bleed
that is when i run, in sweat
to imagination st.

there, on that street,
walk words upon
sidewalks made of dreams
and they always turn,
always stare at me
when i come
these words, they love me
these words, they would die
just for me
here on imagination st.

the words come to me,
the words talk to me
and from them
i scream out handwriting
from them i create
what is but is not
through them, i am

i can see them now,
going to and fro
about imagination st.:
a street that goes on forever
a street that never ends

it's a street that reality,
the cold hard murderer
has tried to kill
but there'll be no
genocide here

so here i write
and weave out intricate
yarns, with frayed ends
and dead pins
so here i climb
the rope made of
words which dream

Endlessly deep
For someone to keep
Only underneath
That cloudy water
Will you sleep

I live in a little crap town that's a mixture of residential streets, farms, and a dusty uptown. There is no "best place in town" here, or if there is, I haven't found it yet. We don't even have any arcades or the like! What crap...

Lol. You people with pictures live in an actual city. I don't. And I won't tell you where I live, either. If you happen to know, good for you. If not, yay! There's nothing to do around here. We have a main street with some icky shops, and that's about it. A real mall is 30 minutes away. It's called the Garden State Plaza. Oooo. Here's a link to a picture of it: http://www.skyviewpictures.com/images/client-fullsize/com-realestate-shopping.jpg I'm too lazy to upload it to my server and I don't want to steal the picture & leech bandwith, so there's the link.

Here's another shot of the inside, though that area doesn't seem familiar. I think they knocked that shop out (on the right on the lower level). http://www.icsc.org/srch/sct/images/3Rodamco3.jpg

It's not really that exciting, anyway. If you want something, fun you have to go to New York City. I've been to a lot of places, but I do like chinatown. Ten Ren's Tea House has fantastic teas, and they have milk teas, too, with the tapioca pearls and the big straws. It's great. ^^

Aji Ichiban (a chain of candy stores) has two locations in Chinatown. I've been to one of them. Here's the link to the picture: http://www.leavethecastle.net/nycphotojournal/images/23Sept6.jpg It's really sad, too, how I can tell that that's the shop. ;_;

Chinatown is lots of fun. THE street of Chinatown is Canal street, and then there's other Chinatown streets, off of it, and into more of the interior of Chiantown, as well. ^^ It kinda took over little Italy, too, so there's more Chinatown than little Italy. Heh. @_@

I've seen the Chinatown in Boston. It's crap. And in London, Ger says the Asians and the balcks have gang wars. O_o So get out of midtown and visit the Chinatown in NYC, dammit! Or better yet, visit Juu, and be engulfed in total Asian-ness. =P

I can honestly say that I really have never run into tourists since my town sucks. But I will say that I have been a very considerate tourist.

All my good pictures are in storage or I just can't find them. Therefore you'll all have to deal with my two old scans from Letchworth State Park which isn't even in my area code, but a nice park none the less. Incase you can't guess from the two pictures, I'm a vain person, not that good looking, but vain. The girl next to me on the bridge is my best friend since high school.

By next week if this thread is still going strong there will be pictures of the Lilac Festival which is in my area. There's also the Corn Hill Festival in the beginning of July. That's when people sell their artowork and crafts and stuff. The last two times I went I had a real good tiem even with my head ache and I plan to finally go for the first time in 3 years. Spencerport Canal DAys are the same weekend as my birthday and Fairport Canal Days are in the first part of June. You'll only see those if we still have the thread.

Well, ok, on with the pictures.

I live in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, but besides Swarthmore College, there's not too much interesting here. However, I do live relatively close to Philadelphia, and I go in 1-3 times a week. I have a few favorite places...

First, my favorite concert venue is the basement of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia on 21st and Chestnut (I think it's 21st...). Plenty of cool shows come here, you can see a listing at R5 Productions , under "Shows". I Saw the Mountain Goats there Wednesday night, as well as countless other shows there.

I'm sure most of you all know about South Street ("South Street, South Street, that's where all the hippies meet"). However, in recent days it's become ery commercial, and filled with lame folk decked out in full Hot Topic regalia. Still, it's a fun spot and has some great record stores, and on the sidestreets its still got some cool independent shops. My favorite spots on South Street are The Bean Cafe, Ishkabibble's, Spaceboy Music, and Repo Records.

The Chinatown of Philly is nice too. It's your standard city Chinatown, but is beautiful and fun nonetheless.

There are a few other places in Philly that I love, like Old City/Art District, Ritz theatres, Moore College of Art And Design, and The Parkway, but I am too lazy to find pictures of them. Still, know that they're cool.

I'd like to thank Genkai for his stuff on Philly since I'll be there at the beginning of 2006 for a wedding. Hopefully I'll get to see some of that stuff.

Anyways I was at another cool spot tonight that I can't remember to take pictures of because I wasn't planning on going there.

I went to the White Lady's Castle which is just a wall made out of cobble stones on a hill you can look out to Irondiquoit bay from there or go across the street and sit on the beach. Not exactly a tourist spot, but very nice and peaceful.

In a small, country town called Monroe, the best you can get is a Hardees, a small barber shop, a small music appliances shop, and the health food store. Those are the only things I remember from "Main Street" in Monroe. Pretty pathetic.

I would like to show you all the entrance to the old highschool. :)

Not very exciting, huh? I mean, the Bi-Lo and the auto shop across the street from it look more interesting! Probably cuz theres usually huge trucks and cars with great rims in their parkinglots, but I mean, c'mon, what'd you expect from a small-town?
