boxybrown305
I'm not really sure what you mean by this. If by choosing the ussual, are you talking about buying an anime that is well known and aired on TV? If that's the case, then i still couldn't answer, because i don't have cable, and rarely watch TV in the first place. All the anime i get, i have discovered through either word of mouth, friends, stores, even right here on OB (if i hadn't ever been here, I would never have found out about great anime shuch as Elfen Lied, thank you very much Dagger for that). I'm just not sure where you're trying to go with this.
J2Assassin
I think that the main point here is that when we all fell like watching anime, do we go to the tried and true titles (Trigun, Slayers, Cowboy Bebop etc.....) or go into some new titles that we may not all know about, like a recent import from Japan, like Air, Samurai Champloo etc., you know the kinds of anime that you look at and have a fight with yourself on wheter or not you get it. I have used many different sources to verify an anime's enjoyment value through magazines and word of mouth, but in my opinion, you just have to figure out how good or bad an anime is yourself. If I'm studying for a test and need some background noise, I play a series I've seen before and know like the back of my hand. Mostly however, I tend to extend my viewership of anime to many different titles and genres.
Delta
J2Assassin speaks the truth. I say go for something new. Get something your local networks would never show. The way I see it, networks can't help but stick with one or few anime genres. If one's trying to expand her horizons, one must go beyond her comfort zone (i.e., cable TV). A word of caution though: uninformed purchases of unfamiliar series is not advisable. It's always good to do a bit of research. If it's got what you're looking for, buy it. jean_san
I'm all for different animes. We can't capture the variety of situations and stories Japanese animation has to offer if we stick to the safe animation that American channels allow us to see. Ranging from the vastly poppulary Cowboy Bebop to the seldom heard of Elfen Lied. I vote for both i suppose. As for what a person should get, just get whatever you want. As people have already said, do a little research, and if it sounds appealing to you get it. This goes for popular or not. Just because something is well known doesn't mean it's bad, the same goes for an obscure title. This can be applied to almost all forms of entertainment. The only deciding factor in my mind is if it appeals specifically to you or not, popularity doesn't atter much.
QuincyArcher
If i had to choose between never seeing a new anime again, or never being able to watch all my old favorites again. I think i would stick with the anime i've got, I own a fairly massive collection of anime on dvd and i am constantly rewatching every series i own and every series i own i have watched at least several times through. Although there are many great new series' popping up all the time in japan, none of them are still quite as good as the classic series' that pioneered and revolutionized each of the genres. Like Neon Genesis Evangelion or Cowboy Bebop to name a couple.
Guest Chi
I am constantly looking for new Anime on the market. I seem to always run into things I fall in love with as well. ^_^ I think if you are low on cash then it is smarter to stick with the usual, since anime tends to be quite expensive. But, if you have a little bit of extra cash every couple of weeks I definitely think looking into some new anime is a great/smart thing to do. Me I love Shoujo, drama, and romance. These Are the things I look for. Research is key before you whip out the 25 bucks though. ;)
Dagger
I'm not totally sure what the original poster wants to know, but I'll try to respond as others have. Speaking for myself, I rarely make blind buys. The last time I picked up a DVD without knowing anything about it was the first volume of Kino's Journey (which actually turned out to be a great purchasing decision, given the quality of the show). But I almost never buy anime DVDs in brick-and-mortar stores, unless I've heard of a really incredible deal that can't be matched online for whatever reason. I just like to plan things out, I guess. When I make pre-orders, I give top priority to shows that I saw partly or fully on fansub, since I know I'll like them (and I feel something of an obligation to spend money on them, anyway). After that comes anime I've heard really good things about--but I usually make sure to hunt down reviews, trailers, cast/staff information and such before deciding to drop money on a series. ~Dagger~
DeathBug
Money is a big factor in whether or not to branch out from your beaten anime path. With manga, it's not nearly as big a deal, but when you're talking twenty dollar DVD's, most folks don't have the capital to go samplin' willy-nilly.
