Frog Advice...

My brother went fishing yesterday, and caught several fish, but also caught a frog. He didn't mean to catch the frog, but he yanked the fishiing line out pretty hard because it didn't feel like a fish to him and he thought that it must have been water plants or something.

He caught the frog by the tongue, and the frog couldn't even pull his tongue back in. My brother's friend put the frog in a jar and left it in the car, but my brother forgot to release him, and ended up going home with it.

I let the frog out in our backyard and my brother poured alot of water near the bushes to keep the frog wet.

This morning though, the frog wasn't there, and the water had dried up (gulp). I'm guessing the frog is dead by now. It's too bad that my brother came home late and we couldn't take it to the pond last night.

But do you think the frog would have survived if we let him out in the pond? His tongue was badly hurt. Would his tongue had healed in time?

Not being an expert on suuch things, I really can't tell you. But in your situation, I probably would have done the same thing, heh. I'm a sucker for slimy beasts.

Don't worry too much about what-ifs. If it makes you feel better, as long as you haven't seen the frog dead, it may well be alive. Shrödinger's cat, and all that jazz.

Actually, we found the frog again. Yay, he's alive! He's in our back yard. My little sister named him Toby.

We've been watering him every day. And he's been smart enough to stay in our backyard because he knows we'll give him water. He still can't pull his tongue back in. I'm not sure if he has managed to eat. I hope he doesn't starve to death. Maybe he can still make it whip out, but simply can't pull it back in properly.

Anyway, my brother's gonna take the frog back to the pond when he goes fishing again.

An animal under care will live longer than an animal in the wild. Even if Toby is just a temporary stay, I would put him in a small fishbowl or aquarium if you have one. Put a decent-sized rock in there, and maybe some twigs, then fill it only a little bit with water. Enough that he or she can keep himself or herself wet. Maybe let him or her out under your supervision during the day.

Of course, that is all just assuming you have a fishbowl or something of the like. You never know what the weather is going to do, though, which is why I suggested this.

Thanks for the advice PiroMunkie, but I don't have anything to put in inside the house. We tried a jar with holes punched in the lid for air, but he keeps jumpng, trying to get out, and then he hits the top, the the holes in the lid are jagged (ouch, not a good idea). I don't have an aquarium either.

I think he's fine outside. The weather has been fine exept it hasn't rained yet. But like I said we water him several times a day.

What I'm most concerned about is his tongue. I have no idea what to do.

Hey, why am I using "him"? I don't even know what iot's gender is! Lol.

I'm glad Toby is alive and jumping lol
Well if my memorie don't fail me now, frogs eat flies and animals like that, so I'm sure he will be fine even if he can't pull all his tongue, and I think it heals soon enough, just keep watering your yeard and when you think he's good of his tongue, release him in the pound :animesmil

Squee, Toby, how cute XD

I feel horrible cause there are a crap load of frogs living in my yard and I don't know anything about them! T_T

Since keeping him in a jar didn't work, maybe something a bit shallow with water inside? Something like those things you cook meatloaf or brownies in? (though I'm seconding the idea someone already mentioned of putting rocks or twigs or some such in there with him so he has a place to manifest) You couldn't keep him in the house in it XD;;; but it might help him outside?

I'd wait to release him in a pond though T_T As you don't know if he's been eating or is able to eat.

If you are really worried about Toby, you could always attempt calling a vet and asking about him? (or her XD;;;; I don't know how to tell the gender of a frog either *laughs*) Vet visits may be expensive though T_T but there's no harm in calling and asking? There may be other places that could have info to... like a pet store or other place that sells fish and such (there's one near me where the people are really nice and know all sorts of things...plus they own a freaking gator O_o; so they must know their stuff XD;; ) I don't know if someplace like the humane society could help? Maybe the zoo? XD;;; *dies*

I don't know what kind of fish your brother is fishing for, but he should probably use it as bait. There's nothing better to lure a fish in with is live bait struggling through the water.

As for his tongue I think it's ruined. It's turned a nasty shade of brown, and it was bright red at the beginning.

But, he ran away again, or might have been eaten by a racoon or something. I think he's gone for good this time, we haven't seen or heard him in days. Oh well, good bye Toby.

His suffering could be put to an end and in return you get a delicious fish.

I have some experiance with frogs, toads etc., but I can tell you that once the tounge is ripped open it's ripped open. Maybe with surgery the powerful muscles that the Frog needs to use it's tounge could be repaired, but unless you see it again, it will starve to death. Shame... Could have caught a nice fish with that one, really big ones love frogs, I know from experiance. But uhh... I'm not going to be mean or anything, but comon. What's worse? A quick, slightly painful death, or a slow death of either starvation or being eaten by one of the very many dangerous animals around. My effecancy may be gross... But it has to be done.
