Kamuro
I've heard a lot of weird stuff in my days, and here I am to mention them all to you lol. I'm just kidding, I won't list them all. The point of the thread is to list small things you've heard, that just don't make sense. Things that seem excessively weird but no one really seems to notice. Here are some examples of what I mean. - When shows offer "a year supply" of something. How does that work? I mean, who decides what a year supply of something is? How much do you get of it? I think shows just say this for the shock value "A year supply of something, that must be a lot!" but I can't really imagine a show actually giving you excessive amounts of something. - Another thing I don't understand is how people like John Edwards actually become famous. Apparently he can "talk with spirits from another dimension" but c'mon, we all know this isn't true. He mentions a month that someone from a large audience has a relation to, NO WAY. I mean, people just seem incredibly gullable. Its the same with Mrs.Cleo or whatever her name is. I can't imagine calling some fake physcic for false hope about something going on in myself. How bad have things gone in your life that you're consulting late night physcics? - Has spelling actually become a sport? I mean the "National Spelling Bee Championships" or whatever they're called was shown on ESPN, and a kid actually passed out on the show, from the pressure I guess. The announcer goes "Well, this has never happened before," well of course not, they're spelling for god sakes. I know its important to them, but it isn't a sport. And spelling is not an exasperating task. These are just a few my examples. If anyone would like to relate to the things that I've stated that would be good as well. Point is, what are some things that just, don't make sense.
Samsquamch
Oh, ohohohohoh! I got one!! -In some hockey games, they use a broadcasting tool called a "Fox-puck" It's a puck that has special sensors so that it glows neon-orange on film. This is, of course, so that people can keep track of the puck. This is such an exasprating task... seeing as how the ice is white and the puck is black... Thank god TSN never sold out to somthing that stupid...
Umbra II
I've got one, though its a bit old. I remeber hearing the Catholic church complaining about Harry Potter movie, how it was evil and supported witchcraft, don't watch it, ect. Then I hear that they said that Lord of the Rings movie was a good movie for the family. What part of that made sense to you? I can see where they are coming from with Harry Potter, although, be reasonable, its just a kids story. HTere's nothing sinister about there spells. If you listen, you'll even be be able to see what they mean. (WINGardium LEVIosa, LUMOS). I watched Th Lord of the Rings, and if they consider Harry Potter bad, then they should hate Lord of the Rings even more. Yet they don't. They endorse it, even. they put 2 and 2 together and got 5. James
Hah, don't even try to make sense of what the Catholic church says or does, lol. ~_^ I can only think of one thing that I never understood: the massive popularity of Friends. I've seen a few episodes and, my god...this show is compared to the likes of Seinfeld? Wow. The jokes are usually horribly inane and air-headed. "Ow, I got ice in my eye." ..."You want me to put ice on that?" *massive audience laugh* C'mon! That's just so awful and lame, lol. I saw a Barbara Walters interview with Matt LeBlanc (however you spell his last name) and she was like "say your line!" And it was "How you doin'?" or something. My. God. She actually giggled at that? That's like when Bart says "I didn't do it". Just...euh...no. They also spend a lot of time accusing other Christians of being "lukewarm" and "woman-pleasing". Which is funny, seeing as one of them is a woman. Baron Samedi
If I had the time, I'd insert just about every single one of the stupid and erroneous litigation cases that I've heard of. And the ones that I haven't. And Kamuro, have you ever been in a Spelling Contest on like, a National level? There's a lot more pressure than you'd realise, especially considering how insanely well-covered it was.
Kamuro
Thats what I was saying Baron, why was it so well-covered? I understand that a lot of these kids are incredibly smart and it should be recognized, but to what extent? A boy collapsing is proof of just how nerve-racking its become, and it shouldn't be that way. I guarantee you their teachers, parents, whatever, said "go out there and have fun," but how is this possible with the lights and cameras glaring down on kids not even old enough to drive yet? Heres my comments on whats been stated so far that I like... - The puck, sounds pretty stupid to me actually. I mean, in theory I could see how someone thinks it would be a good idea, but as you stated, white ice, black puck...problem? Seems like a lot of work for someone to hit it around massively with large sticks. - James James, genious lol. I hated Friends and I never really understood the popularity either. - I find not only the Catholic church, but almost every church in existence being hypocritical on one point or another. I make it a point to ignore most things they say. Heres a few more I thought of, they just kind of pop into my mind lol... - I actually heard this one from a comedian. Pop-tart directions. Is there really a need for pop-tart directions? C'mon, is it that hard to put it in the microwave for 3 seconds and eat it? *shakes head* - Medicine and their mass amounts of side-effects. I'm sure you've all heard it before, medicine made to cure one ailment yet causes several others. Can't believe I forgot this one. So much confusion, so little time...
Bloodseeker
Why is Paris Hilton a celebrity? Sure she's hot, but she hasn't exactly done anything meaningful. Baron Samedi
If you're not radically different, you're not different at all. Apparently, anyway. Don't you think that the increased exposure of the Spelling competition is a good thing though? I mean, it's the only time where: * For a few days, kids are rewarded instead of ridiculed for taking something seriously. * Widespread attention is paid to an essentially academic pursuit. * For those paying attention, it illustrates the connection between raw, unsexy effort and success. * The competitive spirit is unleashed in kids who have no other outlet for its expression. * Instead of complaining about the culture of negativity, it throws a positive log on the fire. * It is essentially a modified meritocracy -- with issues of luck, coercion, excess, and motivation swirling around on the edges and confusing matters. In other words: life. Maybe it is overdone, but don't you think there is an essentially positive message? And in regards to the medicine thing, I see your point. But, it's too simplistic. The side-effects are generally easier to bear than the disease, or at the least they don't kill you, as the disease may.
Bloodseeker
^Not really. If anything, it'll make those that really need to work on their spelling and grammar view it as even dorkier than before. You know how their brain works. Unless it can be aplied to something that most people find fun (unlikely), it will continue to be referred to as an uber-nerd's hobby. Baron Samedi
I never said it would make spelling a popular past-time, lol. The point is, instead of being ostracised over their nerdiness, they are celebrated and rewarded for it, with recognition and prizes. Instead of becoming people with no outlet, they can have a chance to explore their passion. They can test themselves mentally, where they mightn't be able to excel physically. How can this not be a positive message?
Leofski
This made me laugh. In most places, small business are knocked down to make way for multiplex cinema complexes. Blayze
The warning message on McDonalds coffee always gets me. It says around the rim of the coffee cups: "Warning: May Be Hot." Because most of the time it isn't? I'm sure you've probably heard the story of why this came about. A woman sued McDonalds because she burnt herself on the coffee, apparently not knowing it was going to be hot when she spilt it. Also, it really ticks me off when people ask you the time and they point at their wrist. I know where my watch is! Do I point at my crotch when I tell people I need the toilet? Another one is when people say: "You can't have your cake and eat it too." Well what else are you supposed to do with cake if you can't eat it? Or am I supposed to eat someone else's cake? Also, when people say "Life is short." Well, name me one thing that you can do that is longer than life. Life is pretty damn long if you ask me! One more little thing. When people come up to you at the bus stop and say "Has the bus come yet?" Well, of course it has, that's why I'm still standing at the bus stop! Ok, rant over. Hope this adds something. Samsquamch
I saw a hair dryer that said "Dot not, under any surcumstances, use while sleeping." That is, unfortunatly, the only time I have to do my hair :( I've also seen a dessert with the instructions "Do Not Turn Upside Down" written on it. Unfortuantly, they were written on the bottom. Kamuro
There is so many of these things surrounding McDonalds, coincidence? I think not. I also heard of people trying to sue McDonalds for gaining weight...*confused* Is it not you who put the food in your mouth and swallowed it? Just because the food is made and advertised, does not mean you have to eat it. So shut your fat holes please ;) Also, people who believe guns should be done away with. Now, I'm no crazy redneck, but really, the statement that "guns kill people" is completely untrue. People kill people, guns are simply a tool to do so. If guns were taken away, people would still kill other people, just in different ways. Way to help expand murderous patterns! WOO I also don't like people who work at a fast food place, and then complain all the time because they work there. Well, first off, its your own fault you work there, apparently you're not smart enough to get a job paying above minimum wage. Second, I don't need to hear your problems nor your complaints concerning your life, just serve me my food and be on your way.

What they fail to realize is that the people that would use them to invade other people's rights probably don't care about the law and would just pick them up on the black market anyways. Its just like putting in rules to stop rule-breakers. It won't work. All it'd do is limit the upstanding citizen's ability to defend themselves should a person with gun attack them. Baron Samedi
Yet oddly enough, in countries where there are restrictions on guns, the murder rate is shockingly low. In fact, in Australia, we've never even had a school shooting. I wonder why? You're right, gun's don't kill people. But they provide an easier-access and more remote way for people to kill other people. Perhaps a guy has just found out that his girlfriend cheated on him. Odds are, in America, Land Of The Free, that if he gets angry enough, he'll just grab his Constitutionally recognised gun and mosey on out to the other guy's place and shoot him. Perhaps in another country, if he can't get hold of a gun, then he'll let his anger work off, or he'll go to the other guy's place, and maybe they'll fight. But he probably won't kill anyone. Guns are an easy solution for people who think only in the moment. Gun registration and prevention laws do help. To just say "Oh, they'll just kill people some other way", you're not considering people as beings. Sure, there is more than one way to, err, 'skin a cat', but you don't get much more impersonal than shooting someone. Besides, it at least gives both parties a fairer chance if it becomes a knifefight, lol.
