Hi there. My reccomendation is Tuxedo Gin, by Tokihiko Matsuura. Very funny, original and unique. One of my favorite mangas! It has action and romance and well as an absolutely adorable main character- a penguin! It's also not too short, not too long- 15 volumes, which I think is a perfect lenght. Last volume to come out was number 12, so the story is almost done. Well, I hope you like it. Bye now!

If you liked Peace Maker Kurogane, why not try and track down Shinsengumi Imon Peace Maker? (it comes before PMK, so it might fill in some holes in the plot)

Death Note is pretty good too... but I'm a fangirl and have been forcing it on everyone I know ^^; I have no idea how to describe it though O_O;;;;;

unless you only want manga that's actually out here ^^;;

Blade of the Immortal is also pretty good.. I think it's a bit long though? (it's also a bit older... not sure if it's finished or still on going?) You might enjoy it if you like PMK ^_^ (some of the same things... samurai, supernatural elements, a bit amusing at times... it's prolly a bit more mature themed than PMK though?)

Try Rurouni Kenshin. The character development is fantastic, not to mention the incredible plot. There's also plenty of action, so go read it! :animesmil

I personally would suggest one of Yu Watase's manga (such as Alice 19th, Imadoki, Fushigi Yugi, etc.) Her art is not only amazing, but the character development is quite good (espicially in Imadoki).

Chrono Crusade is very good. The character development is mostly there in the beginning, but there are flash backs and you see what events caused them to be who they are today.

Thats all I really can think about right now, I am too tired.

woa, hasnt anybody thought of inuyasha yet? its like the coolest thing of them all. the characters are really developed, and the storyline is awsome. though personaly, i like the anime better than the manga. its pretty much just as good.

Seconded! And it will start coming out in North America fairly soon, anyway, so that doesn't have to be a huge concern.

What makes Death Note so great is that it really is your typical Shounen Jump manga--except that the villain is the protagonist, and instead of seeing the good guy gradually power up to defeat successively stronger baddies, you see the bad guy try to take down those working in the name of the law, justice, democracy, freedom, etc.

That said, Death Note is also set apart by its addictive plot (plenty of twists!) and its superb artwork. While the character development is strictly subservient to the storyline, I've found that it's a manga which tends to spark long & involved philosophical/psychological discussions, so if you're looking for that kind of depth you probably won't have too much of a problem finding it.

DN isn't an fighting-based manga (although there are some action scenes here and there). However, it's suspenseful and does a good job of getting the reader's adrenaline pumping. Not everyone continues to enjoy it once the novelty of having a psychopath as the main character wears off; however, there's a reason it has such a huge fanbase. Given the criteria you've provided and the manga you've liked in the past, you really could do a lot worse than to give Death Note a glance.

How about D N Angel?

I happen to really like that manga and thought that it was really cool.
Give it a try! I'm sure you'd like it. Well, not sure sure but sure! ^__~

Its about this boy Daisuke who turns into the Phantom Theif Dark.
Its really popular so you've probably heard of it already though...

Hello RofloCopter,
Being only a moderate manga fan - not that I'm limited in interest, just money - I don't know how much I'll be able to help, but I'll try.

1. My first recommendation is, of course, Naruto. The story has excellent action, a wide dimension of characters, and an all around great story. That's why it's such a hit. It takes a little time, but character development becomes obvious within the first few volumes, and the action and depth/background of the characters will probably have you hooked right away. The first 6 volumes are out now in any major bookstore (Borders, Barnes and Nobles).

2. My second recommendation is One Piece. Though I don't find a whole lot of fans of this out there, I really enjoy it. There is an excellent story under the guise of comedy. The fighting sequences are really well done, and you eventually learn to appreciate the cast of characters. Believe me, the manga is so much better than the terrible show on Cartoon Network/Fox Box (yes I still call it Fox Box..or is it on Kids WB?). The voice of Sanji and Luffy..especially Sanji's voice. Don't get me started or I'll be ranting and raving forever. BUt still, I like this series too.

3. My third recommendation would have to be .Hack//Legend of the Twilight. I absolutely adore this manga. It is arguably my very favorite. The characters, the World, the mysterious story and background of Aura and her daughter, the questing and the journey of the group that will become known as "Shugo's Party", traveling in the footsteps of the original Dot Hackers. I'm a big fan of .Hack, and this 3 volume series is for you if you like adventure and mystery.

4. My fourth recommendation is Rurouni Kenshin. I'm getting tired of typing so I'll be a bit more succinct. This is one of my favorite anime/manga. The battles are excellent, the background of each character slowly unfolding keeps you wanting to read more. It is renowned for being a very historically accurate samurai manga. Almost all the major characters are based off real historical figures, such as prominant leaders of the Shinsen-Gumi.

5. My fifth and final recommendation is the Legend of Chun Hyang. I only read one volume of it (I think 2 are out) when I was in Barnes and Nobles a couple weeks ago. I don't know much about it, but i found it really good. I think the most interesting part is that it takes place in Korea, not Japan like all other manga practically. Feudal Korea...that's pretty cool! It's based off a real Korean Folk Legend, updated and stylized. I wanna buy it when I get some money, but I really liked it, and you might also.

That's all for now! Hope this information helps you out, 'copter!
