Anime Subs (Japanese voices with subtitles) or Dubs (English voices)?

I have to wonder, what [i]is[/i] the deal with the morbid obsession with watching subs exclusively? Certain animes done by certain companies, yeah, I can understand liking that one over the dub...but refusing any kind of dub at all? Personally, I like both in some cases. I'm not picky. With very few exceptions, I'm almost split halfway down the middle. Sure, I have qualms about some anime dubs, and I have to admit I LOATHE fansubs, but otherwise, no. In fact, some animes are BETTER than the originals in my opinion. But I guess it's just because I use my head and I'm not jaded. *shrug*

By the way, QuincyArcher, it seems like you have more of a problem with the voice INFLICTION, not the actual acting. If that's the case, you need to blame the script writers, not the actors. Granted, there are some characters that shouldn't have a certain voice [Gluttony from FMA. Grah.] and in those cases the original actors might be the way to go, but not that many dubs, at least in my book, are horrid. Or maybe you just have high standards. Heh.

I used to be a dub listener and there are still instances where I watch dub over sub (like Nadesico, Getbackers, GTO) But mostly, thanks to the interference of my friends, I watch more and more subbed anime. What gives it an even better advantage is that most anime dvds, if you set it up right, you will see the entire original Japanese content, like in Detective Conan. I have been watching a lot of anime in Subs lately, like Maburaho, Gundam Seed, and even Hellsing.

Point is, some anime I like dubbed and some subbed, but because there are more i listen to subbed, I'm more subbed.

Well personally, when i get an anime dvd, i watch it through dubbed, then subbed, then dubbed with subs, then in japanese with no subs. i feel that both are an important part in the enjoyment of the program itself. As each one (subs, dubs, and such) creates a unique show in each of their own ways, wether in personality quirks, vocal mannerisms, and general personality.

Each voice actor protrays a part in their own way, wether it be the fasttalking style of kobaiyashi yumiko, or the style of one of the ADV peoples. so i think that both are equal as they can both provide enjoyment of the show in unique ways.


However, this pole does not allow for middle-grounders, so I cast my vote for subs, simply because that is as close as i can get to the original concept.

The only thing that I don't like about Subtitles: I'm too lazy to read an entire movie!!! T_T

I prefer dubs but don't mind watching subs. The big reason why I am more of a dubbie, is because I really like the voice actors who do most of the dubs. If the english voice cast is bad for a certain anime, then I would watch the sub instead.

With dubs, I can hear an American voice, which I can listen to easily, and I relate with the sound of the voice more. Take the Japanese Goku and the American Goku. The Japanese version sounded slightly more childish with a high pitched voice. The American version had a deep voice, more associated with maturity than that of his counterpart.

Aside from that, with subs, it's harder to keep up with the action, both reading and watching things actively. Sometimes I just wanna kick back, cease brain activity, and rely on my fluency, not read.[/SIZE]

I don't think this applies to "most" anime DVDs. FUNimation almost always includes alternate angles (which can be employed to give you the option of seeing the credits sequences in the original Japanese); same goes for TRSI. But other companies? Nah. Ironically, while a lot of people praise Funi for using alternate angles, there are also plenty of people who hate the practice because it allegedly has an adverse affect on video quality. Personally I don't think the difference is great enough for anyone other than a big-time videophile to notice. Alternate angles are pretty neat, although when you get right down to it, I couldn't really care less which language the credits are in.

I cannot stand subs. I can't understand the audio, and reading the text while soemthing is going on is annoying. I also find the fact that most voices are women annoying. In a serious meditation scene from DBZ, piccolo sounded like a chipmunk.

As said, a few anime surpass their japanese counterparts when dubbed. Most notably [B]Cowboy Bebop, Lupin the 3rd,[/b] and especially [b]The Excel Saga[/B].

I do think the Japanese voices are better and I usually don't mind reading the subtitles. If I can I watch it subbed. But, if I watch it in English first (like on TV) I get used to the English voices and I'm fine with them even after I've heard the Japanese. This has happened to me with Fullmetal Alchemist and Inuyasha. If I watch them on TV, English is fine and a little more relaxing. If I watch a DVD, I'd prefer subs becuase the voices [I]are [/I] better in my opion.

However, if I watch a show in Japanese first, like Fruits Basket or DNAngel, I can never watch it in English. The voices grate on me because they don't fit the character in the same way the Japanese voices do.

So if I ever go dubbed, it has to be right off the bat. Dubs are improving, but I still prefer subs.

Umm have you ever noticed that in the majority of your US cartoon shows that male characters are also voiced be women. As a famous example, the Simpsons. So wouldn't you also find that annoying? I can understand your other reasons even if I am a sub fan.

While that is a valid point, it doesn't have much of a bearing on the actual topic--you know, anime dubs. While there are plenty of women who voice young males in the English versions of various anime, on the whole I'd say that many more male roles are played by female seiyuu.

As an example, take Mitsuki Saiga. When you look over the dubs of her male roles, some of the characters (such as Tsukasa from .hack//SIGN, Junior from R.O.D the TV and Wolfram from Kyo Kara Maoh) are also played by women in English, but the majority of them (such as Makubex from Get Backers, Jing from King of Bandit Jing, Okita from Peacemaker, Kyosuke from The Soul Taker & Nurse Witch Komugi, Masaru from Stellvia, Raven from Zoids, Jamie from Zoids/ZERO, etc.) have been played by men. This pretty much applies across the board, especially in regards to shounen series like DBZ.

I can see where Morpheus is coming from, although I have to say that my tastes differ from his. I love hearing women in male roles. :animesmil

i like subs a whole lot more than i do dubs. the reason is mainly because lets say i watch an episode of naruto . episodes of naruto run about 20-25 minutes. if i go and watch the dub,its gonna suck.badly. i watched dubs before i had a computer but now i see why dubs really arent all that great.its strips the anime of its life by taking from the story. theres a reason why its in the show,taking it out just dulls it out.

As for myself, it depends on the series. I'm a translator, J-to-E, and I like to compare the English ideas of the charas with the Japanese ones. I *really* love the FMA, Cromartie High School, and Excel Saga dubs, as well as Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. YYH isn't bad, especially with all of the added references the ADR writers put in to make Americans "get" it. But I just like to compare, because it's two different languages, and two different audiences.

The only reasons I have the subs on my DVD's are because I have something to focus on, and I can make fun of the bad translations.

[color=#6699cc]What I listen to (on DVD) depends what I'm doing. If I'm going to be giving the show my full attention, I'll usually listen to Japanese with subtitles. I can read what's on the screen, and it's fun to listen to another language.

If I know I'm going to be distracted, or if I'm going to be taking screencaps, I listen to the dub. If I look away for two minutes and they're talking in English, I can still follow what's going on. And the subtitles don't get in the way of what pictures I'm trying to take. :)[/color]

I like listening to the anime in japanese and using subtitles because the english translation mostly from 4kids sucks. If it comes to the point where I can barely hang onto the story in japanese with english subtitles I will change it to audio english

Thats true but I'd like to take bearing on one of the characters that you mentioned was male but is in fact not. Though Tsukasa from .hack//SIGN is voiced by a female that is expected because [spoiler]the twist to the series is that Tsukasa is in fact a female in the real world of the anime.[/spoiler] So in this way you would expect the character to be voiced by a female.

I like both subs and dubs, but for me it really depends on how I saw the series first. Like I saw the slayers sub first, so naturally when I go to my Dvds I tend to lean toward watching it subbed rather than dubbed, but for sailor moon, since i saw it dubbed first, i tend to go more with the dub than the sub.

I dunno about you, but I feel that the anime I'm watching is more authentic if it's subbed. (tho reading the subtitiles is a pain....especially when they talk real fast)

Dubbed sounds cheesy and most of the voices are recycled. I much rather like Subbed the Dubbed :cool:

Actually, I prefer dubbed over subbed because it IS a pain to have to read the bottom or top or wherever and pay attention to whats going on. Actually I have found a couple of voices I prefer English than Japanese, one of wich is my very own Avatar, Hazanko. Its deeper, richer, and more sinister in English than the one in Japanese. And give all the other ones a break. I haven't yet heard a dubb that is so terrible that it makes me want to pull my ears out and eat them. (Though when Kagome screams, I'm tempted.)
