ChibiHorsewoman
This is just an extremely basic thread that asks what do you do for a job. Maybe what was your first job? And do you have any good stories about your work. Right now I do temp work at a bindery in my area. Basically it's boring work where I have to stand for hours either folding laminated papers, helping to sort pages that will be placed in books or punching out envelopes. I even make boxes, as in I place a lable on a box and then turn the cardboard into a box. I've only had it for two days, but it's not too bad. If you're not working on something too complicated or near a machine you can talk. There's one guy there who kept eying me on my first day I had to walk by him when I went to the lunch room or the bathroom and he started talking to me and asking my name. Well I figured what the hell because I might have to work with him (I'm hoping not) so I told him. Then yesturday while I was trying to find where I would be working he started bothering me again. This time he wanted my number because he wanted to be 'friends' (Yes, I'm just so sure that's what he wanted) Well, since my divorce isn't finalized yet I just told him I was married. I hope that worked or I may have to start wearing my engagement ring on my left hand instead of my right. As for first jobs. My first job was volunteering to baby sit at my parents church. But that never paid any money. So I don't think it counts. My first paying job was a Helping Hand at Wegmans, a grocery store where I work. It was hard, I was the first girl and the annoying popular guys worked there. I even was annoyed by a few other kids in school that didn't like me. But as you all know I have an attitude problem and I got yelled at by my supervisor. But I managed to work there for a whole year! Well, there's one of my many stories. Feel free to share yours.
outlawstar69
My first actual job, that wasn't in the employ of family, sort of fell into my lap. I had gone with my sister for moral support as she went to her job interview at an interstate rest stop, and as the manager interviewed her, another manager for one of the other businesses there eyed me and asked if I wanted a job. Lo and behold, I then became an employee for Starbucks. This plaza was notorious for having it's high employee turnover rate, lol. I ended up quitting my job to preserve my sanity... next time you get your uniquely made latte with that special touch, ask if they have a tip jar... they deserve it. Goodbye, Face
My first job was working at a video game store. My parents became good friends with the owner, who didn't know anything about video games (he was more of an investor). The guy was amazed on how much I knew about games and anime, which is what the store sold, so he hired me as his assisstant, higher than the two college guys who worked there. We started holding tournaments for Soul Calibur II and Tony Hawk and the like, and I'd always beat the other guys, so they made me the person who ran the tournaments (just so I couldn't enter). Eventually, near the end of the summer, the owner's more important job (I never asked him what it was) forced him to move way out of state, so he sold the store to some corporation, who fired all of us. Life sucks. At least now I don't really work for a boss, I work for a music magazine that pays ok and I can get into most shows for free.
Shinmaru
My first job was at a small cafe in a hospital. All I did was wash dishes, put food away, and mop up the floors. I made cookies a couple of times, but that's about as far as I strayed from the daily routine lol. Right now I've just finished working for a bookstore. The lady who owns it needed help for a couple of weeks while she set up shop (she just moved here), and I basically helped move around shelves and put away books. I've already bought a few books from the shop, and I had my eye on quite a few others I saw while I was shelving them. Books rule. Unless I'm needed anymore at the bookstore I'm out of a job for the moment until later this summer. In August I'll start up a job at a Halloween shop. Should be decent enough, since I actually like it there.
Boba Fett
I?m earning $7.10 an hour as a clerk/stocker/cashier/whatever else my manager needs me to do at a local garden store. Depending on which full time employees aren?t working, I fill in as needed. On any given day I could be running the register, watering plants, putting together grills, cleaning up or going out to get someone?s lunch. It?s a decent job, although the boss is a grouch most of the time. It?s not exactly the most interesting job, as horticulture isn?t my forte, but I?ve learned a lot through the experience. I?m saving money for college and all the workplace gossip makes for some interesting stories. My first, and previous, job was as a bagger for a grocery store. Depending on the day, I could make a significant amount of money (all tips) or very little. Each person usually tipped between two and three dollars, which was a lot for five-ten minutes of bringing groceries to someone?s car and loading them in. That routine, on a busy day, could be as often as seven times an hour, which worked out quite well. However, there?d also be days when very few people showed up, and I?d make $20 all day. I quit after three months, as I didn?t like it all that much, but it was an ok first job.

vegeta rocker
I work at the school i attend, i am a cage worker. I go to a school that teaches video and digital media production. if you need equipment or help with a piece of equipment or software you come to us. We are basically a bunch of trouble shooters. When we aren't helping students, we are either checking out equipment or cleaning the labs. Its okay i just get 6.50 an hour, the main thing about it is, its one of those jobs that either pretty boring or pretty busy. There is no in between. And i have also realized that i can go a whole 5 hours without a single person to help, but the second i get food everyone needs me.
Naotasvespa
I had my first job when I was 6 and that was working at my dad's restaurant. Man it was terrible working there when it was summer....it felt like you were working in hell.

I was "hired" back in June 2002. The job has treated me well so far. The work isn't physically tiresome (apart from minor carpal tunnel syndrome already starting, but I type a lot anyway), and the pay is good ($15/hour? I'd say so.). I don't deal with customers or anything, so that's a plus. Downsides...I work at home, so I need to discipline myself to "stay in the chair." Some of the doctors in Radiology don't realize that holding the microphone up to their chest is bad. Some of them condense entire paragraphs into syllables. But all in all, the job is kick-***. Jim_Hawking
My current/first job is in Fast Food. (CURSE YOU, DAVE THOMAS!!!) I've been there over two years, and have only gotten one government mandated raise. Yep, I still make minimum wage. On top of that, seeing as how I've been there longer than a good 85% of non-management crew, you'd think I'd at least have a full schedule right? WRONG! I get fewer hours than the ********ng n00bs that were hired a week ago! My last paycheck was $150. I know what some of you are probably thinking, "if it's so bad, why don;t you leave?" That my friends, is not possible. That place is a curse. For over a year and a half I've been trying to escape, but to no avail. I'll be forced to work there until my mind is completely destroyed and I go berserk, thus killing the store, the management, a few unlucky bystanders, and myself. I regret ever taking that job.:animeangr
grecords
Right now I'm not too happy with my current occupation. I work in a video game store and a lot of people have a misconception of the experience you get from working in one. I get really annoyed when people come in and say "wow you must have the best job in the world". Its definitely not. Most assume that it must be fun working for a video game store mainly because they assume they get to play all the new games that come out. This is only true if you have interactive stands with the console you need. My store only has a GBA stand so I really don't get to play any new games unless I buy or rent them. Another problem would be the fact I have to sell so much additional things when people buy a game. For every transaction we're expected to sell over 3 things from protection plans to pre-orders. Our numbers are tracked so we are hounded endlessy if we aren't meeting goals. We deal with everyone and their mother. From the normal casual gamer to the person who will ask us what we're playing and then try to start console war arguements. Some may ask us a question and if we haven't played the game they complain that we're no qualified to do our job. Then you have the rest of the jerks you get from any retail experience. I like the people I work with alot so I'll definitely try to stay in contact with them, but the 10 hours a week I'm work aren't cutting it so I'm looking for employment elsewhere. I guess it helped that we weren't a major chain or anything like that, so you only would know of us through another person's recommendation. We had about 30 customers a day, usually we'd keep the parents occupied (while their kids shopped around) by teaching them some stuff about games for like 30 minutes. We were laid back to the point that when someone brought in a system that needed to be fixed, we'd fix whatever's wrong with it, then test it by holding employee tournaments in the back while one of us (usually our boss since he was horrible at most games) stayed up front. As for dealing with customers who are thick-headed about which system is the best, we'd usually gang up on him, one of us for each console, and we'd rationalize with him until he got the point. We made everything we did fun, even the debates and arguements, think X-Play when they rate a bad game, lol.
Corey
I'm currently working at a local Oil Change center and I've never been happier. The pay is only $6.00 an hour, but the people I work with are so cool it doesn't matter in the slightest. My boss is the most laid back guy in the world. He's the epitome of how I want to be when I'm older. All of my co-workers have such a good sence of humor, sometimes I'm rather sad to go home. The work is hard and honest. I come home smelling like crap with burns on my hands from hot oil and engines. My fingers are becoming permanently stained from oil. I've stained several of my own shirts that I wear under the uniform we have. But I love it. I'm going to be genuinely sad when I have to quit. My first job was as a salesman at an automated carwash. I'm actually still employed there, but since their labor budget got cut severely for summer, they have no problem temporarily taking me off the scheduel.

Panda
My very first "job" was working on the family farm. My big brother and I would have to take of things around the farm. Nothing like walking 115 acres before school to check the irrigation water :animeangr Mind you that we didn't have hand lines or a fancy circle sprinkler system...only siphons. Ugh. My first paying job was working at the one and only movie theater in my hometown. I worked first as a concession worker-- selling candy, soda and of course popcorn. I then moved up to cashier and didn't have to work with the food anymore. That was nice. I also met my husband at that job. I was in high school and he was in college. I then started working at a music/video store selling tickets for Ticketmaster. The best part of this job was being able to listen to music all day, free movie rentals and ALWAYS being first in line for concert tickets. That job was great for when I was in college since I could also study when it was quite. After college I started into my career as a vet tech. Basically it is an animal nurse. I assisted with surgeries, took care of dental cleanings and medicated hospitalized animals. It was a wonderful job. I loved it very much. Unfortunately I had to "retire" due to my health issues. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Sjorgen's Syndrome which both cause joint pain. Bah. RA/Sjorgen's suck. I now do freelance writing. I do work as needed for an anime company and of course, do work here on theOtaku network. I loved my career in vet med but I love working in the anime industry too. Since my health doesn't allow me to work my former career this is the next best thing. :catgirl:

Sara
During the school year I work in my dorm's cafeteria. Working at the place you eat 90% of your meals can be pretty rough (you get sick of the food in a fraction of the time!), but I love my boss, coworkers are generally decent, and I have to admit--the commute takes about forty seconds (and that's taking the stairs.) Scheduling is more flexible than a gold-medal gymnast, and it's really a great place to be. I'm signed up for two nights a week next semester, but I may pick up more--depending on whether I take a second job somewhere else. I'm thinking about applying for this cool pizza-parlor on campus. The pizza isn't really that great, but I love the atmosphere, and the front of the store is a huge garage door that they open on warm days. Reason enough! I don't have a job this summer. I was looking for one, but then my dad starting bugging me about it. Call me contrary, but if I get a job, I kinda want it to me my thing. Not his. Oh, well. We'll see (it would be nice to have money again, heh).
Azure Rose
Ah, the food industry. I'm currently at my first job...making sandwiches...at Togos, which, awesomely, is attached to Baskin Robins. Hahaha, therefore, I get 50% off of dinner and a free scoop of ice cream for dessert! I'd say, that pretty much makes everything worth it. Well, that and I really like the people I work with on the evening/night shift. They all pretty much rock, and so the slow times go faster with people to talk to. Quick story of the nastiest sandwich I've ever made in my life: This woman comes in on her cell phone talking to her son, asking him what he wants on his sandwich. Tuna she says, with Swiss cheese. Okay, that's not so weird. But hot, she says. Okay, still not so weird, it's like a tuna melt. Could you add a scoop of avocado to that? Umm, okay. And also, as scoop of hummus. Ewwwww. A hot tuna and cheese with avocado and hummus. It was the most mushy, awful smelling sandwich ever. Ugh. But other than nasty sandwiches, the occasional pissy customer, and doing mountains of dishes, I rather like my job! ^_^

celestialcharm
Ok.. My first job was working at the waterpark(well is, because I'm still working.) A summer job yay  It's quite nice because I don't do much. Which can be boring. But, I have to deal with some rude people. For some reason, I had to watch over some kid yesterday(I don't think this was in the job describtion, I'm sure babysitters get payed more....) He kept asking what everything is(I wonder if I was like that when I was 2.) :animestun The thing that sucks about working at a water park, is that there's all this water around you, but you can't go in it!!! (We'll I could, I guess) Then, there's the bugs! Those annoying things are obsessed with me!! Also, I missed a whole lot and I've only been working for a little over a month! I missed the camping trip, buying my bro's prom suit, and they put me to work on my b-day!! I took that day off :animecry: So, I'll switch my shift with some1 or call in sick. I get payed like $6.95. I think it's minimum wage but they might give me less because I'm still 15 (but, I'll make them pay when I'm 16!! Muhaha in 2 days for those who didn't know :D ) My first pay check (and my cousin told me not to get too excited, which I did) was $0.00!!! They make you pay for your uniform. But, they take it straight out of your paycheck!! My next pay check was $70 something(I worked like 10.50 hours.) They took out like 45 dollars from it!! So I ended up with $24.43 :animecry:
ChibiHorsewoman
My co workers and I got really bored tonight since the machine that was supposed to be spitting out Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas City guides was screwing up because of the size of the books (hard cover and will contain a game). So nobody had any books to stick foam dots on and we got bored. And there was a conveyer belt and some rolls of doble stick tape O so we rolled them down the conveyer belt. The belt was going this way: <---- and we sent the tape this way: -----> We then proceeded to throw things at eachother and I took off my sneaker and placed it on the belt just to watch everyone's reaction. Okay so now there are probably still some people there working on the books so some gamers can have something nifty because they have to ship out tonight. But atleast some of us had fun.
