Your character has to follow rules. Apparently, someone is Snake, and everyone else is a guard/soldier/whatever. If snake throws a magazine, you have to look, giving him ample time to gun you down. If you hear a noise, you need to see what made it. It sounds interesting... but strange. I hope it works out.
Tatsubei Yagyu
Lucky, I haven't bought Snake Eater, yet. I seem to be real lucky with the Metal Gear series, cuz I didn't buy the first one, years later, a remake comes out for Gamecube. Then I don't buy Sons of Liberty, out comes Substance. And now Subsistance. I just have one question... what the hell does "Subsistance" mean??? :animedepr

People have been asking Kojima for them, since they only came out to a limited audience in Japan. I think he would have put them in anyway, as it seems to go well with the whole 'Origins of Big Boss' theme.
BlueYoshi
The PAL version of MGS3 is a lot slower than the NTSC version, because we're stuck on 50 Hertz, I'm guessing, so it'd be nice if Subsistence cleared that up by giving PAL players the choice of 60 Hertz. Anyway, it's good news that Subsistence will make use of 3D camera angles on a wider proportion of the game. MGS2 didn't use them enough, even in areas where they would've worked so well.

I know your opinion about stealth games. I'm just curious. lol If you haven't played it at all, I think that you may be pleasantly surprised though. I thought that MGS 3 was a lot like the originals aside from the opening hour. Anyway, hopefully more people will actually buy this now. It's really sad MGS 3 didn't sell better while something like Halo 2 broke records.
Gavin
Interesting, most interesting. Having played, and loved every single minute of Snake Eater, I have to admit that these new features do seem rather intriguing. The fact that we'll get the opportunity to play the original two Metal Gear games and see even more of Big Boss is an nice prospect, but rather like seeing Episode III and then going back and watching the Original Trilogy for Darth Vader, since Episode III was made after and the Vader there has different motivations and is a fuller character. In response to Charles' post, I can't believe that MGS3 didn't break any records for sales, the sheer quality of the game should have meant it should have.

Look at Prince of Persia: The Sands of TIme, which didn't even sell when it was bundled with Splinter Cell. Not even Psychonauts is doing well... Anyways, I probably wouldn't get this game unless I could get it for like $20 or $30. It's a remake to a game that I'm already happy with. I agree with Tony, the biggest reason for me to buy this game would be the original games, I have dial-up and no Network Adapter, so no online play for me! The classic overhead viewpoint was the only thing that could be considered a flaw in the original. I wonder how much better or worse it will play. At least it will quiet those who said the engine couldn't run that perspective at a stable frame rate. THE MSX games are certainly nice extras though. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, is in short, an epic. I remember loving Metal Gear Solid 2 for the PSX which my dad got me randomly for a birthday present, and after playing Sons of Liberty I was a tad sceptical. But after a couple of hours, I was starting to slowly get more and more drawn into the story. I also agree with what has been said about good games in general. Alot of great titles are sleeper titles for they appeal to a more 'appreciative' target audience which business and television studios shun aside. The whole world is very shallow really. Metal Gear Solid 3 was also the first game in years to actually make me cry. The ending had some great dialogue and was a very epic way to end it. It really gave you an empathetic perspective to Big Boss.
OtakuSennen
I just beat Snake Eater today. I didn't have the appropriate camo to take on The Boss, and after about twenty attempts I just said "screw it" and broke out the RPGs. Instead of paying another $50 for this I will be renting this, if only for the camera. I want to see if all of those "haters'" complaints are justified. Quick question: Is the theater mode going to include the regular cutscenes from the game as well? I've already seen all of those comedy clips on the Metal Gear website (unless they saved some for Subsistence), and as nice as they were, I would prefer going back to some of the more dramatic scenes in the actual game. Plus, it would be easier to piece the rest of the plot questions I have together, as opposed to playing through the entire game another two or three times. Qman1
(Courtesy of http://www.1up.com ) Years ago, Hideo Kojima made an offhand comment about how he'd like to be working on Metal Gear Online, and gamers finally got to see what he was talking about at Tokyo Game Show, as the online multiplayer mode of MGS3: Subsistence was available for fans to get their hands on. Of the modes that have been announced earlier, the predominant mode at TGS is Capture Mode, where two teams work on seizing an object (in this case, a frog much like the ones you find hidden in odd places in the original Snake Eater single-player game) and hold the object at their base for 20 seconds. We've played three maps, and while we didn't catch the names, we noticed that these were unique multiplayer-only maps (as opposed to how some maps are simply locations from Snake Eater); one map is simply a small cabin with two base markers on either side, another is a larger forest enclave with one team's base in the forest and the other's on the edge of the single building that's in the map, and the last is a sort-of-warehouse district exterior (you can only enter some of the buildings), filled with lots of stairways, roofs, and ladders. Controls are just like the original ones in Snake Eater--even with the new third-person camera (it feels pretty good to be able to swivel the entire camera around with the right-analog stick this time). You still can't move in first-person, though, and to alleviate that, you can perform a semi-lock-on with the L1 button, where you just aim your gun in the general direction of the nearest opponent. The original MGS3 took advantage of analog buttons, so you'll need to remember to push down hard on the Square button when using a gun like the AK-47. It's not super-intuitive at first, but it's fast to learn, and there should be little to no learning curve if you simply replay some Snake Eater to reacquaint yourself with the controls. Match setup is pretty basic, as the host picks a map, and the players just select sides. After that, each player can select his armament of main gun (AK-47, XM8 rifle, M37 shotgun, SVD sniper rifle), sidearm (Mk 22 dart gun, colt pistol) and secondary items (stun grenades, chaff grenades, claymore mines, porn magazine, etc.). Everytime you die, you can change your equipment before respawning (in the matches we played, there didn't seem to be a limit on respawns, nor a penalty besides time to respawn). Additionally, there are weapons and items scattered throughout each map, and while we can tell you that the cardboard box is standard issue (you always have one), we just haven't put it on yet to see how useful it is. Even with just the small sample that gamers played, there has been one tactical discovery: "porno mag mining." Good players have figured out that the most effective defense in multiplayer is to scatter porn magazines all over key points of the map. Back at E3, Kojima commented that players will often experience what it's like to be a soldier in the MGS universe, and the porn mag is a good example. In the single-player game, the magazine is used as a distraction for enemy guards, and in multiplayer, it forces any and all nearby players to stare at the mag while frozen in place. When you're looking at it, you can neither move nor shoot, and other players then just take potshots and kill you while you're frozen in place. We haven't seen much more of MGS3: Subsistence overall, but the little slice of "Metal Gear Online" that we've played has hooked us (we still haven't experienced the whole "play as a Snake or another main MGS3 character aspect" yet), and really, how can you not like a game that uses pornography as a weapon? With all of that said....I JUST CANT WAIT TO GO ONLINE WITH THIS VERSION OF MGS! HERE ARE SOME ONLINE PICS AND HERE IS SOME BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK! Mitch
I was sad that this game didn't make it out for the holiday season. I also just checked when it's going to come out, and apparently the release date is set for March 14th, which is quite a ways away. I guess I can wait, though. Apparently the game is going to have three discs, one of them featuring a three-hour MGS3 movie composed of the game's cutscenes and some other things. I'm very excited to buy this game, and can't wait till it's here. Those lucky Japanese got it in time for the holiday season...lucky them.

Subsistence is supposed to have MGS1 and 2 included also... who else is going to get this game?
Do I even have to answer this question? :D I pre-ordered mine yesterday and picked up the Metal Gear Saga DVD. This is the first time I've ever double-dipped on any kind of "special edition" video game but I'm a Metal Gear fanatic which makes the idea of an improved Metal Gear Solid 3 sort of a wet dream for me. The original was already damn-near perfect but the new camera angle, theater mode, online play and other new features put it over the top. Even minor quibbles, such as a brief pause in the healing menu that bothered some people has been ironed out. I've heard that the frame rate (which was good to begin with) is supposed to be somewhat improved too, which contradicts skeptics' statements that the original didn't adopt a third person view because the frame rate would drop. It won't be 60 fps like MGS 2 but it's no big deal. Seriously, for those of you clicking on this thread who, for whatever reason, haven't played this masterpiece, now is the time to experience it. Even if you generally don't like stealth games this one is pulled off so well that you'll be willing to play all the way through once you start. It's so flexible that it can be played like an action/shooter if you want anyway. Plus the direction of the cinematics is almost unparalleled in video games. A must-play. Magus
Meh. Charles pretty much said everything plus more. Really, I don't know if I can contribute to saying anything without repeating what he said. I will be getting this for sure though. Everything that's featured in this game and it's only 29.99. Question(s). I know the so-called problems are being fixed for MGS3, but are they fixing anything for the 1st MGS or are they gonna leave those the same? (I really wish they add shooting in FPV in the 1st MGS. Feels funny without it. I started off playing MGS2 1st, so maybe y'all can see where I'm coming from.) And then theatre mode. I'm assuming this is going to be a mode that lets you look at the cinema's? If so, will it just be for MGS3 or for all?

The limited edition with the third disc is $39.99. Whether you want the theater mode or not is up to you. 2) You misunderstand. The first two Metal Gear Solid games are not being included. The first two Metal Gear games (from the MSX computer) are. Which, of course, is a nice touch considering we've never received a stateside release of the true Metal Gear 2 (forget that Snake's Revenge crap). Magus
Aw!!! I misread it. Thanks for clarifying. So that takes away those questions. I haven't played either Metal Gear games so it would be nice to finally play those versions. I wish they would upgrade those as well, but it can't be helped and I'm asking for a bit much so.... I'll let it be. ^^ --------------------------------------------------------- So I finally got my hands on MGS3:S about three days ago, and I have to say if feels a lot better with the camera being adjustable. One thing though, they took that adjustable camera away during the last fight. Kind of upsetting, but "shrugs" it don't really take away much. I haven't tried online mode yet, and I don't think I will either. I'm not a fan of playing games online, especially when I don't trust many people. I like the addition of Demo theatre as well. To be able to keep going to Ocelot being a show off is something I could look at all day. Well not all day, but for quite some time before going to another demo. The secret theatre was crazy as well. There are a couple I didn't particularly care for though.
Sokolov and Sokolov, Snake and the that guy kissing.
I don't think I'm going to attempt the original Metal Gear games either. I can't get myself to go back to the old games from way back when. (I know. Why didn't I just stick with Snake Eater? Because I wanted the new camera, and it's also none of your business :) ) Overall, the game is still as good as it was before. (better, being able to adjust the camera) But I still like Sons of Liberty a little more. Both of them have areas where I hate playing through, but there's something about being on a hanger/strut, whatever they're called, that I like more than being in the jungle. One more thing. The song that Ocelot first makes his appearance (And almost everytime he comes strutting through). What is the name of that tune? Because I can't find it for nothing. Edit: Now I'm frog hunting, and I'm having a problem. I think it's a glitch or I'm looking in the wrong spot. According to this frog location guide at games, in Dolinovodno, the frog is suppose to be on the other side of the bridge on the top post. Now I've ran back forth on this bridge about five to six times to make sure I wasn't blind or anything. That frog isn't there. Possible glitch on my end?
