Hayama
I hope this helps... Try Fullmetal Alchemist, it has plot twists and great characters. Try Wolf's Rain, it has great art, a cool plot and complex character relationships. If I think of some more I'll post!
GreatBird
I would say cowboy bebop its full of plot twist and good characters, Its also a good show it you are into action animes. But other than that i would have to go with what hayama said on Full Metal all the way. -GreatBird
r2vq
If you want something that makes you laugh and cry, try Samurai Champloo. It's a historical series that holds no claims to being historically accurate. It takes place during the time of the Samurai so there are plenty of great fight scenes, but it relies heavily on the Hip Hop theme. This gives it a unique style, and a launching pad for comedy. Or, do what I do. Go through the "Anime Lounge" at OtakuBoards and read the descriptions of different anime until you find one you like. ^^ -ArV
QuikSilver04
Definitly go for Full Metal Alchemist then :animesmil . I've laughed nd cried so much with this one. It's a wonderful anime to get into. You connect with the characters quickly and fall in love with it. And if your looking for something that you can't exactly catagorize, then I recommend Wolf's Rain. A beautiful anime and you can't realyl put it into 1 genre...or 2...or 3. Anyways, it's really cool. A few laughs here and there, but I garantee you it has everything ;) . Well except Mecha, that's about it. Both have very original stories too.

Rick Hunter
If you want something generally new you should try watching as people said Full Metal Alchemist, Paranoia Agent, Gundam Seed, Gundam Seed Destiny all these have plot twist and a lot of emotions. If you want though to go the old school way try some animes such as Galaxy Express 999, Macross, Megazone 23 Part I-III. I highly recommend Megazone 23 because the first part alone has enough plot twist and turns that should keep you entertained and at the same time you could see how the Matrix stole most of it's aspects from those first two films. Shinmaru
I've really gotten into RahXephon lately, and I would recommend it to anybody in a heartbeat. Interestingly you mentioned Eva, which RahXephon is often compared to, as I've seen... the two series aren't very similar, though, other than at the basest, most superficial level. The characters, in particular, are quite different - honestly, they're all just far more likable than those in Eva. That's not such a big deal to me (though it is nice), but I imagine that it would be a very big deal to a lot of people. RahXephon also has a very interesting, complex story that takes full advantage of the characters and their various relationships to and with each other. There are plenty of twists and turns that, despite being genuinely surprising, make sense when you stop to think about them. As much as I like Eva, I got the feeling that a few things were introduced into the story rather arbitrarily, honestly. With RahXephon, it feels more like you're getting a wider peek at the larger picture with every episode. It's already there in front of you; your eyes are just being opened more with each passing episode. Also, I think that RahXephon is far less depressing than Eva is lol. Not that RahXephon is a light-hearted story, or anything, but it doesn't lay it on quite as thick as Eva. I think a lot of that has to do with the overall strength of the main character, Ayato. He's much stronger mentally and emotionally than Shinji is. Ayato has his moments, but they don't come around quite as often as Shinji's. The tone of the story isn't quite as stark as Eva's, either, though it is quite dark. I prefer the mood of RahXephon's story thus far to Eva's through the same number of episodes (I've seen the first 16 episodes of RahXephon). RahXephon is also very beautiful. Color is used incredibly well, the landscapes are gorgeous, and the characters and mecha are all excellently designed. The fight scenes are animated with great care, too. Definitely a visually stunning series. I like the music, as well. It's subdued, for the most part, but that helps it add to the show without overshadowing it. The fact that the music is used fittingly isn't too surprising, since music is a rather big theme of the series. So, yeah. I hope that recommendation helped out a bit. I've not regretted buying the first four DVDs of RahXephon, though I do regret not waiting a few minutes and buying the boxset, haha. Oh well. Nothing to do but to wait until I save up enough money to buy the final three DVDs. :)
2010DigitalBoy
Full Metal Alchemist is the most depressing anime I have ever seen. I've found myself bawling on the ground several times. Its also pretty humorous and lighthearted.
SilentSecurity
My top choices would be Full Metal Alchemist, .hack//SIGN, Outlaw Star, and Cowboy Bebop ~Wes~
Guest Kibou
Yakitate!! Japan is great, since it's BEYOND funny. Gankutsuou is good in that the story is about REVENGE. <3! And maybe Prince of Tennis or Erementar Gerad? I've heard they were good/great. XD
