Dagger
Would any of you recommend this movie? I haven't seen either Hannibal or Silence of the Lambs, so I'm not really sure where to start; I've read Hannibal, but I haven't read Silence of the Lambs. I feel that the book has given me enough knowledge to jump straight to the Hannibal movie... I just don't know whether renting/buying it will be worthwhile. Apparently the movie's ending is quite different from that of the novel--and seeing how as I absolutely loved the book's ending and that it really elevated the entire work in my eyes, I'm not sure if I'll take kindly to the changes. Input would be greatly appreciated. Also, how gory is the movie exactly? I can kind of gloss over the extremely unpleasant parts--such as
the hanging/disembowling of the Italian policeman
and
Mason's death scene
--while reading, but I'm concerned that I might have a bit more trouble with them when the presentation comes complete with video & audio. :animeswea For whatever it's worth, Anthony Hopkins' presence in the film is the main reason I'm curious about Hannibal, aside from the fact that I quite liked the novel. ~Dagger~
Blayze
I would definitely recommend Silence of the Lambs. It is an excellent film-the plot is extremely well-written, the suspense really leaves you hanging, and there are some incredible plot twists that you would never think of. Anthony Hopkins is, of course, superb as the suave psychopath Hannibal Lecter. I have never read the book, and I didn't actually know there was a book, but as I have said, I definitely recommend Silence of the Lambs. I haven't actually seen Hannibal, but I have heard that, whilst it is a good film, it in no way measures up to the original. The chianti line is an absolute classic, though. Hope this helps in your decision.
Sinistra
To start off, Hannibal is a movie that I watch quite often. I would definitely recommend buying it. I myself haven't read the novels, but the movies are very good. If you're a little uneasy with the gory parts, such as you have mentioned, I would say that they're moderate.
Verger's death comes rather quickly and is a blur, for the other two Sardinian men however, it's a bit different. One man's face is bitten apart and you can see a lot of blood.
However, I'm a little edgy with gore, and I managed to do alright.
But as for the lobotomy of Paul Krendler, which I'm sure you read about, is rather graphic and realistic.
And so I'd have to leave that to your judgment. You could simply listen if you wanted to get the key details that the doctor gives Agent Starling. And as Fallen said, Anthony Hopkins does exceptionally well with his character as he continues with the sequel.
The chianti line is an absolute classic, though.
Indeed, Fallen. Indeed.
Dagger
I have never read the book, and I didn't actually know there was a book, but as I have said, I definitely recommend Silence of the Lambs.
All three movies (SotL, Red Dragon and Hannibal) are based on novels by Thomas Harris. I've only read Hannibal, as I mentioned in my earlier post, but it was really a whole lot better than it had any right to be. If you don't hate books, I definitely think checking out any or all of the installments of the series would probably be worth your time, especially since there are differences between the movies and the novels. The Hannibal novel ends with
Hannibal and Clarice becoming lovers and going off to live the high life together. It's actually very romantic in a twisted and ironic kind of way--which is probably why I loved it so much, haha.
Am I correct to presume this doesn't happen in the film? I just added SotL and Hannibal to my Netflix queue, although I won't be able to actually watch them for a while. I'm undecided regarding Red Dragon--I think I'll take a look at the book first to determine if it interests me. Hopefully I will be able to stomach (no pun intended, I swear!) the
brains.
:) ~Dagger~
Sinistra
Am I correct to presume this doesn't happen in the film?
Yes, that's correct, although I suspected that from the watching the ending. Dr. Lecter actually
leaves by himself at the end of the film, however, they do share a kiss, forced, but still a kiss.
Red Dragon didn't attract my attention as much as the other two films. Dr. Lecter is hardly involved. It seemed a little too awkward for me. I presume the book is better.
Hevn
I haven't seen Silence of the Lambs, but the other two movies, I saw. I've heard lots of good things about the first movie. I'm quite satisfied with Hannibal and Red Dragon. Great acting by great actors. You definitely shouldn't miss it. Red Dragon is more on detective stuff but still good. Also, I'm sure you can take the gory stuffers of Hannibal. You'll love the ending either way. ^_~
