Name trends....

I've noticed something a bit wierd over the years... people that I've known with certain names always share similar personalities traits.

I've known several girls with the name Chelsea, and all of them have been really energetic social animals that love to joke around.

The same deal goes for girls named Emily.

Guys with the name Greg have always been people with a huge habbit of lieing unnecassarily, and they all love to use big words to try to make themselves sound smart.

People with the name Ian are always really hard workers.

Guys named Jacob have always been fat losers in the eyes of most people. Strangely enough, I always get along with them.

Guys named Edward have always been tightwads that have a tendency to freak out over every little problem.

People with the name Ryan are always *ssholes. (except for my literally retarded cousin.... GRRAAAAGGHHH DOGS! *curls up into a ball*)

And all of these are 100% true. Wierd, huh?

I don't think what you say is correct. For instance. My name is Laura.

I've met many of Laura's in my lifetime thus far. Some are nice, some are popular, and some are absolute brats.

I'm just quiet, nice, and keep to myself. Just because they are the same name, doesn't mean that their personalities are too.

I, like Japan, don't agree. Like her, I've met people with my name, and they are all completely different. My name is Ashley, and out of the 13-14 I've known, most were preppy, cheerleader-like people, a couple were completely Satanist, and one of them was a very kindhearted person. Also, I know people by the names you'vwe mentioned, and their personalities are completely different than how you said they were.

For one, my stepbrother's name is Greg, and he is nothing close to a lying show-off. As a matter of fact, the Greg I know is completely honest, and he is pretty much a child's person, I've seen that little kids love him, and I've never seen him show off with any fancy words or such.

And although I do know an Ian who is a hard worker, I also know another one who is the complete opposite, very lazy, and he's also an idiot.

And when it comes to people named Edward. I knew one, he didn't freak out over every little thing. He was actually really fun to be around.

And, finally, what you said about Ryan's has to be the one I agree with least. My older stepsister is married to a Ryan, and he is nowhere near how you described people with that name. The Ryan I know is a very cool guy, and like the Edward I know, he is fun to be around.

As for the other names...I have no comments, because 1-I have never known anyone by the name Chelsea or Emily, and 2-my little brother's name is Jacob, but he's just a baby-a little to young to predict how he's going to be.

EDIT-

How would you know he was honest? What if he was just a really good lier?
I just wanna say that if he tells me he's gonna take me to a mall in a week and actually keeps his word about it, or when he tells me he is going to a concert and shows me pictures he took at it, he cannot lie that much.

Well... At the very least, he'll get along with Bloodseeker.

:animeangr There is no predicting how someone will be based on their name. You might as well be saying that someone's little sister Amy's gonna hate everybody when she grows up.

There's my case and point, and I shall say nothing further, as there is no point arguing with someone who apparently has a very limited trust factor to think that someone they don't even know could lie about everything. And besides, judging people on their names is proof that you people probably don't get out much.

Well, I don't normally enjoy being dissagreable, but what the heck.

Anyway, I'd just like to say that (While this thread is rather... Eh... Pointless?) it is still rather amusing. I do believe Bloodseeker was hoping for some conversation (Maybe some condtradiction and controversy here and there) but mostly just an amusing and unimportant conversation. So... What's the point if everyone just tells him he's a lier, hmm?

That aside, I'd like to say that I've noticed this (Though not 100%) and I, in fact, DO find it amusing. I agree with Ryans, as I've had my fair share of arguments with my brother's best friend (Ryan, of course.) And I also agree with a few others... I won't name them due to fear of those with the same name stumbling across this page...

Hm... Alexander.

Well, my name is common among my peers. My parents wanted to give me a name that was unique, and it ended up being generic/boring. Sounds noble and I love it though. ^_^

So far I've noticed that the Alexanders I've met are socialites, but I'm not. I mean... I'm not a geek, but definetly not a social butterfly either. Strange, no?

Well, I think you're being a little harsh, sakurasuka, as it is a known fact that names do share qualities with the person. While maybe not all the qualities, you'll be sure to pick up a couple. Ever heard the saying "What's in a name"?

My name is Jamie, and I have a photo frame (haha) somewhere explaining what my name means. It hits all points--clever, confident, extrovert, artistic. I am all of those things; therefore I can say my name suits me.

It isn't a common thing for names to mean something totally different from the person.

Maybe saying "I know two Jacobs that are annoying and fat, therefore they all are" is going a bit far...because I know a Jake who is a great guy and has arms like a freaking tree-trunk. (In the ?POMG! Look at his muscles!? sort of way.)

In conclusion--names mean something, but not everyone is the same.

Interesting, most interesting.

Coincidence, pure coincidence. My name's Gavin, DW's name is Gavin and two other guys I went to high school with were called Gavin, yes there were some similarities in our personalities, basic similarities mind you but to say that having the name Gavin will dictate your personality is at best a dubious supposition. Not to shoot holes in your theory Bloodseeker, but I have a cousin called Edward who is nothing like you've described, if he was on fire he wouldn't get worked up about it.

Ever heard the saying "What's in a name"?
Yeah. It's from Romeo and Juliet, and Juliet is pointing out how Romeo's name doesn't matter to her, or have any effect on her love or his personality. "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet," eh?

Anyway, with things like photo frames that give characteristics about you... things like that just make broad generalisations. If you list off positive characteristcs, what comes to mind? Smart, funny, easygoing, creative...? Almost anyone can find positive traits in himself. Barring angsty teens, people are inclined to flatter themselves.

I'd really like to see something listing all negative traits that people would agree is all accurate.

I would hate to be judged on the basis of my name.

"Alexander" means "helper of mankind" or something like that.

Delicious irony, eh? I'm not looking to help mankind. I'm looking to destroy it. ~_^

Lore, I see the point you're making and I know you can't judge someone purely by what it says about their name...I was merely stating something I had noticed with myself and with a couple of friends.

I guess I wouldn't like to be judged purely on my name, either, but I've had a great interest in meanings and origins of names for a while now, not everyone reads the Baby Name Book out of boredom, haha.

One thing I dislike about certain names (this may be going slightly off topic) is when they are assumed to be of a certain gender. Like my name, for example, when I started my French class my teacher was looking for a boy and I had to shout, "I'm Jamie!" before she realised her mistake. Things like that annoy me, especially when I have people going "Jamie? Isn't that a guys name?"

I totally do read baby name books for fun. I love word origins, and name meanings are great. I just don't put any stock in the names having relevance to a person's personality (unless the person in question goes to Hogwarts...).

I think it's kinda harsh to really base everyone's attitude or their actions for that matter based on what their name is. I know a whole bunch of Kevin's that don't act exactly the same way I do but then again....thank god for that. Maybe it's just a coincidence in your life only Bloodseeker ;) . I'd like to think everyone has some sort of originality to themselves that's what makes humans great.

Now I've met only a few Alyssa's in my life, my very short, sixteen year long life, and none of them were really like me. One was a druggie whore (Pardon my language, but I have no tolerance for people that make themselves into objects), and the others I'm not really at liberty to describe because, A) I didn't interacte with them much, or B) It was too long ago for me too accurately remember them.

Dido to that.

But anyways back to the er...topic. It's true that some names have a tendency to get a bad reputation like Ashley or Alicia. I have met a lot of cheerleaders with that name so that everyone around here asumes them to be snobby, but the truth is I know an Alicia and she's a very nice person and not a cheerleader. My point? Not everyone is going to be the same. It is ironic though, how many people with the same name I run into and they look the same. (It's just a wierd coincidence) for example I've know two Kates who were red heads and we're equally vicious to others. Same goes for the name Lindsey. All red heads too.

My name for example is Katie. Every Katie I've known has always been preppy and a big time party girl. It's not that I don't like being social, but it's not like I go to parties ever night. Just goes to prove you that judging someone by their name might not be the smartest decision you can make. I also was curious and looked up my name's meaning. It means Pure and Virginal. Ahem, I have no comment on that. :animeswea

Really? I've always liked non-gender names and found them interesting, an example the name Alex can be used in both ways too. I can kind of sympathize with you though with having to explain to people. Most teachers assumed my real name was Katherine and when they saw Katie on roll call they would always stop and ask if I wanted to be called by my real name. It takes me ages to explain to them that I'm not a Katherine or Kaitlyn and that Katie is my real name and not just a nickname. Either that or they call me Kate. How I dispise that name.

Yep, I tend to type people I haven't met based on their names. Even after we get acquainted, I continue link certain traits to their names, whether I find it in them or not. It's built into my head, I guess.

Probably the reason why a person finds similar traits in people with the same name is because he/she actually looks for these traits in them. No matter how faint the trait expression is, it becomes amplified to the person who (desperately) looks for them. Then, oncethe link is established, he/she can precondition him/herself on how to deal with the next John or Jane who comes by. Sounds like a shortcut, yeah?

I sooo do not think this discussion is pointless.

That happens to me too. My name is Luci, but everyone seems to think that my full name is Lucille.

I think that names are interesting too, and it is kind of cool to study people's names and see if they are actually like that, but one should never judge a person on their name or anything else for that matter.

Personally, I think it is a huge coincidence if two people I know with the same name have similar personalities. For instance, once there was a guy named Craig who molested my sister, but I also have a very good friend named Craig, who would never do anything like that and is a comepletely different sort of person.

There are other examples I could share, but I think you get the idea.
