SilentSecurity
I've been reading things that say you can add front plates to your XBOX 360. Recently I read they're coming out with the same thing for the PSP. Is this going to be a new fad? Or will this be another one of those no good attempts to get consumers to waste money? ~Wes~
Morpheus
This is pointless. I really don't care what my consoles look like, as long as they function.
Bloodseeker
This is pointless. The current Xbox 360 design looks like a DVD player... how boring. Maybe a change in color schemes would help.
2010DigitalBoy
Precisely. Most people will buy the worthless peice of plastic, and therefor the companies will flourish. I know my brother would buy them. Hell, if the made a zelda skin for my Gamecube, I'd probably buy it. Does this mean I suck? yes. Do I care? No * slaps self *
ShadowFaintZero
Two words: Marketing Scheme. We all know they exist, and there are a quite few rumors out. Did anyone hear the rumor about the Special Edition games? Well, if you haven't the rumor is saying, that Microsoft sees that the happy gamer, will infact, PAY MORE MONEY FOR A SPECIAL EDITION HALO 2. Gasp. This rumor therefore states, (and just might be true): "All next generation Console games will be 75 bucks." Marketing Scheme. Companies will come up with things like that just to get you to spend more, and plate covers are no exception. or at least...in my opinion. :animeswea
OtakuSennen
It's the same concept as cell phone plates, obviously, and you know how well those sell. A lot of people want to make their electronics unique.. Hell, my mall has an entire booth dedicated to that kind of thing. So, yeah, it's totally a ploy to drag in the "casual market" and get an extra buck off of them. I don't think they even deny that. I'm thinking that they'll sell for 360.. But I don't understand these PSP plates. Do they just snap on top of the regular case? If I decide to get an Xbox 360, I might end up getting a custom plate if they come out with a design that I like, but for that to happen it would have to match with the rest of the case (Those "samples" they've released do not impress me). Having black and red stripes on the front of a console and silver on the rest of it does not sound very appealing to me.
Desbreko
People have been making custom case designs for consoles for a long time (earliest I remember being for the original Game Boy), so I'm not really surprised that companies are picking up on this. A good number of people obviously want it, and the companies are giving it to them. Nintendo, by the way, is also doing the same thing with the Game Boy Micro. You'll be able to buy different face plates for it, to use in place of the regular one. They'll just screw on and off. Personally, I wouldn't pay more than maybe $10 for something like that, but it would be neat to have if they made some decent designs. I wanted one of those NES style GBA SPs for a while, but didn't want to buy another SP since I already had a platinum one; interchangeable face plates would make it so you wouldn't have to shell out so much money just for a new look.
James
I think it's a brilliant idea. People love customizing things, especially teenagers. It's a very, very good idea. If the plates are cheap enough, they are guaranteed to do well. I also like the idea of having special plates for competitions and stuff like that. It'd be cool if Nintendo and Microsoft did that with their respective systems. With Revolution, I loved most of the concept colours they had shown. It'd be cool (but probably impossible) if you could remove the entire outer skin and replace it with another colour. That way you could have four or five colours to change now and then. I'd like that very much. But for now, face plates are just fine.
BlueYoshi
Yeah, I can see myself customising my console in the future, but I'm hoping that the idea is practical. Dust is my main problem with these sorts of things, though. The amount of dust that I find in my mobile phone is traumatising, and I hardly ever open it... in fact, I only ever open it to blow off the dust gathered. Shocking. Anyway, the way I see it, this is very different to the whole mobile phone clip-on customisation thingy. It's the same concept and all, but different in a few aspects. I've never been into mobile phones. Sure, I have one, but only to make and receive calls. Styling it out like some people would has never appealed to me, but then again I don't really care as to how my phone would appear to other people. With a product like a gaming console, however, I'm all ears, because it's something I actually take an interest in and would be willing to give a try... if not for the practical value then at least for the aesthetic value. Simply put, this could target many different types of consumer; those who just want their consoles to look good, those who have a weird fetish with tweaking and customising things, or even those who just want to spend money on brand products.
xaustus
People love customizing things, especially teenagers.
and that about sums it up teens are there target group and the this way they can give all the exterior mod freaks a way to mod there box without voiding there warranty! I personally feel it's like the Dreamcast Memory cards. If you remember they had those screens and you could get little minigames and stuff on em well i think it's like that, good if your into it if not ya aint missing out on anything. It's something new and catchy, not revolutionary.
Goodbye, Face
Customization is always a good thing. If you don't like face plates, don't get one. My first thought was like a clear one that you could print your own design on paper and slide it in or something, I didn't know it was actually interchangable plates. Those DreamCast memory cards were a cool idea, but the batteries wouldn't even last a day, I actually had to take the batteries out and put them back in whenever I wanted to use it. Kamuro
I'm not really a fan of another thing to buy concerning playstation, or any other console. There is so much clutter already, things being sold with little purpose whatsoever. I just want to buy the system, and play the game, but even that can be complicated nowadays. I'm really not out to spend anymore money on something I don't absolutely need. I'm not sure about you guys but gaming is expensive. Hundreds of dollars for consoles, money spent on controllers, memory cards, seperate modems, computer hook-ups, seperate TV routers. Tons of money without even considering the price of games. $45-50 for a new release. And sure, you can play it on the internet, for a fixed price that is. I love gaming, and I love to play just as much as the next guy. Maybe I'm old fashioned but isn't this a bit much?
James
I'd only expect these things to cost between $5 and $10 or something. You'll probably be able to get a pack of six for only a few bucks. I don't think that'd be too excessive for many people.
BlueYoshi
They'll be in a reasonable price range, most likely, no where near expensive. I remember it was Nintendo Official Magazine that use to give out free circular disks that could be clipped onto the black circular part of the GameCube with the logo on with each issue for a few months running.
SilentSecurity
OK so some people think it's a good idea, but if it's too expensive what's the point? It's not like a car or something where everyone on the highway can see your new customized hood or something, only you and anyone who comes to play the console will really appreciate it. So will their purpose be to make the owner feel good knowing he has the coolest looking XBOX 360 in the neighborhood? ~Wes~

It could have something to do with conformity, but that depends entirely on the trends that certain communities would follow. Personally, I'd customise my 360 simply because the opportunity is there, and that I'd like to do it, hence the feel-good factor.
Semjaza
I have a customized Dreamcast. I put a transparent blue plate on top and left the botton that white color. I think it looks pretty hot, myself. Personally I'm getting tired of black and grey consoles. White was a step up (that old white Saturn was awesome), but it's being overused nowadays. I like the option to play around with the look. foolycooly6363
The idea's good but they better have more than a couple chioces, if the selection's poor and what they have are bad designs then why waste the money.

I'm the one who'd be looking at the thing the most, so I'd like it to look good, regardless of whether or not other people saw it. Personally, I think it's kind of stupid to buy something like that just to try and look cool or whatever. Ya gaming is expensive and all, but just a few more buck isn't going to kill you, and having customized to make it match the setting of the room it's placed in which makes you feel better about the room, because honestly if you had some wood paneling in your room and you had this high tech device just standing out I would want to get a wood looking face plate to match the room. Plus why would we clean our house if it was only us and whoever else goes over can see. Thats why we want face plates so it looks GOOD in the room, just like we like our house to look GOOD. SilentSecurity
I think plate customization for the XBOX 360 has just sunk for me. I saw the prices for the plates and $19.99 is more than I want to spend to make my console look flashy. See the XBOX 360 thread for a link to the full list of prices. Xbox 360 alone costs $399 and then games. I'm not going to blow more money for a flashy front. If it were $5 OK I'd do it, but $20 isn't what I'm willing to spend right now after I purchase the 360. Killer7
I think this customization is one of the few things 360 has going for it. The white doesn't exactly look too cool, so I am gonna want to change it. I will wait until they get some game or anime influenced plates, as the most of the ones they have shown are just plain dumb. silpheedpilot
Look at is this way. Would I throw down some money for a faceplate with a bunch of Stormtroopers beheading a few Ewoks? You bet your butt I would! Why? Because its personal preference, thats why. Its the same concept for soda. Companies create new types of soda and we all drink it all up! Like the newer Lime sodas; when they came out we all bought into them. Does it make us dumb or anything for buying into a new concept? No. Its just simply personal preference. Some people might want their 360s looking really bland and dull and some might want a 360 that looks quite spiffy and good looking. Again, personal preference.
foolycooly6363
Yada, yada, yada. Sure customization is the new 'IN' thing, but $20! The day hell freezes over will be the day I spend that much!
