Jake of Bodom
I'm just getting into Warhammer 40k. I'm looking at creating my first army, and I am strongly considering the Tyranids. Any experienced WH40k players here that can offer me some advice or have anything they'd like to discuss? And for anyone who has no idea what Warhammer is, you should learn now because it's awesome. It's a tabletop wargame (war simulation game played with miniatures and fake terrain). It's great fun, and the perfect way to get your nerd on. So... yeah. That's about it. Retribution
Ahh... Warhammer 40k... *nostalgia attack* =_= I have a Tau army, and in an allied war with Dark Angel Space Marines fought off a massive horde of Bugz (that's slang for Tyranids) as well as Necros. Tau have extremely long ranged rifles with high power, and picked off the bug horde as it approached, but a few of them got in close combat with my units and butchered them. At the same time, by Railguns had taken down the Necro monolith on the first turn, and the Marines were slaughtering them. So the war was a good one... except for getting caught in close combat. For a Tyranid army, you have the number advantage on your side. Your units are close-combat based, and won't really stand up to exchanging fire. Aside from that -- ask other experienced Bug players about them. They'll know more about how to start an army off than I do.
Jake of Bodom
Alright! Thanks. Yeah, I'm gonna buy a Tyranid army and my best friend is buying a Tau army, so you're story should help me a bit. Thanks.
Lafleur
Personally, I prefer Warhammer Fantasy over 40K, but than I'm not a big fan of the Squad-based combat, I prefer large-scale army clashes, so if you ever need some help for WarHammer Fantasy, don't hesitate to ask
2010DigitalBoy
At my last school, there was a small group of nerds I hung out with (they weren't so much hanging out with me) that were all Warhammer obsessed. I wanted (and still kind of do) to get into it, but I don't know where to start. Can anyone tell me how to get started?

It's a great place to start, but at Games Workshop (At least the ones I've been to) they usually sell EVERYTHING you could possibly need for Fantasy or 40k, and somtimes they can give you a tutorial on how to play and paint with WarHammer models. Oh, and incase you were wondering, you do need to construct and paint the models before you can use them. I've owned an entire Dwarven army and I still havnt played a bloody game because I'm trying to get them all painted!
Jake of Bodom
Hey Ilium, I was wondering if you could explain the difference between the Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k combat systems. I'm still sorta deciding which to play, and for me, the deciding factor is the combat.
Lafleur
The big difference is that the 40K (For most races) is a squad-based, tactical modern style combat where each model is a seperate unit in a squad. Fantasy is, depending upon race, more large-scale, old-style Units (A solid block) and cavalry units and siege engin units etc, but it's a different type of comba. Big difference is that Fantasy has a much larger scale battle usually, while 40K is more tactical in a modern sense. You could look into LotR Fantasy Games, it's made by the same people and it's fairly interesting. Although it's incredibly difficult to paint them (Tiny *** models) and I wouldn't give that a try until you've got a bit of experiance with WarHammer. For any other imformation, check the link I posted. It has pretty much all the WarHammer imformation, supplies, and a bunch of other nifty stuff you could ever need. Dragonboym2
I play 40K as well. My army is the Space Marines Ultramarines. I don't have many, and my paint job isn't as good as most peoples, but I'm working on it. Right now, I'm working on my squad leader, who I call Methious The Queller. I want to make him a custom character, so I'm looking at other models to inprove his look. I'm still rounding out my army. So I'm a little new at this. "KAMEHAMEHA!" Lord Dante
I play 40k, but unfortunately, i'm working with the 1997 rules, which sucks. I'm thinking of binning my current army and bookset and starting fresh. i hear that the new rules allow for really great army customisation. the paint job on my old army sucked bigtime
DaSilva
I play 40k with the 1997 rules also. My army are Reggae Eldar. I made 'em for jokes, but I ended up getting into the game.
Jake of Bodom
OK, so here's the deal. My friends and I are starting out. I'll just use their names because it's easier. I'm playing Tyranids, Nick is playing Tau, Patrick is playing Eldar, Henry is playing Witch Hunters, and Colin is playing Necrons. Will this all be balanced? Will we have fun playing such armies against each other?
Retribution
This largely depends on the terrain. Tau will get slaughtered if it's not a large arena with good shooting-spots. I don't know much about Witch Hunters or Eldar, but Necrons are almost always a good bet. I've seen them do better in short-range exchanges of fire, or hand to hand combat. You want to get in and kill close range (unless you have a few long-range Nids). I'm sure you have grunt units that have low point costs -- use those as a diversion. Tau can't really hold off Nids on their own -- too many to deal with. Yes, I think you will have a fun time playing. Be sure to accomodate army's strong points (Give tau a good shooting-spot, etc) and you guys will think it's crack. I swear. lol
Jake of Bodom
lol Alright, thanks! We're all still saving money to complete our armies, so it'll prolly still be a while yet, but we're really stoked.
MarkAnthony
I played about 6 years ago so im not sure what its like now but with tyranids lictors are your best friends =) biovores and lictors against empirial and pointy headed guys genestealers and hybrids against orcs and i never did get a really good build against space marines. Jake of Bodom
Yeah, Lictors are awesome. You should see the updated model! It's one of the coolest looking units in the game! My army has plenty of Genestealers, and my heaviest unit is a Carnifex. The Carnifex rules have been updated tremendously, and they're now the most customizable and diverse unit available to the Tyranid army.
Killer7
I really wanted to get into warhammer, but it was way to expensive for me to be able to afford it. The rule-book is 50 bucks, let alone building an army.
Lafleur
I know what ya mean... But if your a real nerd you'll do your damndest to get ahold of it. I have to drive three hours into Kingston or Ottowa to get mine (Quebec, because Quebec is the dumbest bloody province since Neefoundland, doesn't support Games Workshop for whatever reason) and it's worth it for me. I suck at painting though... Damn fat fingers!
