Wondering if anyone else here plays Magic: The Gathering, MageKnight, Warhammer, Dungeons & Dragons, or any of the other available "nerd games". If so, please reveal yourself here! I'm sure I'm not the only gamer who wishes he had someone to share his interests with.

I used to play Magic and 40k a few years ago. I want to play D&D -- it sounds like a fun game, despite the social stigma. All the customization is boggling, and fighting should be ever more enjoyable.

For Magic, I have a Green and White trample deck, but I lost it. So now I have a Red and Blue deck, and the strategy is to summon high costing cards for very very low costs.

As for 40k, I already toldja. I play(ed) Tau, the alien riflemen who are very civilized, and do everything for a Greater Good. They suck at close-range combat though, so they have these Gundam-esque things that conpensate for their weak bodies.

How about you?

I play Magic professionally, I went to and lost at the first round of the Pro Tour two years ago and that's the farthest I've ever gotten. I have more than 20 decks varying with age and strategies.

I used to play Warhammer (the original), my friend that played it with me moved way out of state, so I sold my stuff. I had a Chaos army with an elder deamon and everything.

I've experienced D&D before, but never really got into it, but I've been wanting to start up in it again because I know a few friends who play it constantly.

Magic used to be my favorite game ever... when I was five years old. Me and my mom played it every day and I spent my spare time cultivating decks. But when my little brother was born, my mom never had time to play Magic, so I quit. I always think about getting back into it, but I don't have the time, money, or info for a card game. Once Im done with gaming Ill go for it.

I've desperately wanted to play Warhammer 40k for 2 years, but with scarce money and a dangerous addiction to video games, there is no way.

Does reading nerd books (Warhammer, Mechwarrior, Halo) count?

I've been trying to get into Dungeons and Dragons, but the books are too damn expensive. A friend of mine says he can get me PDF versions though. >.> Illegal as it may be, I wish to try the game out with my friends and when I get the chance get the beautifully hard covered books.

*cough*
(removed)
*cough*

Shame on you, r2vq. I'm sure you're aware that the illegal distribution of copyrighted material is against OtakuBoards policy, and spoilertagged as it may be, that's still a request for the aforementioned materials. I'll thank you to remove it from your post.

Yes, I know. -.-

That's why I hid it. I have a bad sense of humour but it was one of those "seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time" jokes.

^^;; well if anybody could lead me to a website that could sell me the books at a low price (even if they're not hard covers), I would appreciate that.

I play both warhammer and dungeons and dragons.

I have a small high elf army, and a small "greenskin" army (both between 500-1200 points) for warhammer, and a sizable force of space marines which i need to repaint, for 40k.

D&D however can be a kick in the pants, as I am the only person who plays it for miles.

I play Magic with my kid brother occasionally. He used to like it alot, but now he doesn't as much... I only have 2 decks and my brother made them both for me ^///^ Eh, that really doesn't count then.

Another... Erm... 'Nerd Game' I used to play is Yu-Gi-Oh. Lol. Sadly enough, I sometimes wish I could go back to playing it. I was the only chick to go to most of those weekend tournaments (Well, the only one that wasn't 8...) So I got flirted with far more than I'd have liked (With guys that were far older than I'd have liked), but it was still fun.

I love Dungeons and Dragons. I never get to play anymore, but that game is frickin awesome.

I was pretty hardcore into Magic the Gathering, during middle school after I transferred schools, so much hung out with the nerds. I started playing when Odyssey was first released and continued to buy and play right up until Mirrodin came out. I breathed, slept and lived for Magic and it pretty much consumed my life for two years. I never had a favorite card or favorite color to play, I just simply made decks based upon combos. I played in a state tournament againest Vermont's finest and finished in 5th place with a Red/White Sliver deck.

This is but a small fraction of the total amount of Magic cards I have. I just didn't feel up to cleaning to much of a mess to show you all of them =P

Once highschool hit I had moved back to my old school and I was back with the "In crowd" and of course none of them played Magic, so it died very quicky. I still enjoy playing with sometimes with the few who know how to, but I no longer spend my money to buy them.

That's basically my situation right now. All the magic players moved on to Yu-Gi-Oh and then grew out of it or something. I only have one friend to call on to play with and there's always apprentice, where I can just go in a chat room and ask if anyone wants to play, haha.

I haven't bought any cards or played in any tournaments since Darksteel came out. I still keep up on it, though, and I have a few decks on Apprentice that use Kamigawa cards.

Actually, I just remembered that I bought a few packs of the new "Unglued" set called Unhinged. They're rather funny but I think Unglued was a lot better.

If anyone wants to play me in Apprentice or something, PM me. I'd be happy to teach and/or school you...

I've been playing Magic since I was 7 or 8... that's since about Ice Age, I think. I dunno, whatever set was the newest 8 or 9 years ago. I'm pretty sure it was Ice Age though...

Anyway, I ran out of people to play with about a year or two ago, so I've been out of the loop. I'm planning on going to a booster draft tournament next week, 'cause I hear the Kamigawa block is awesome.

My favorite colors to play are Black and Green.

As for D&D, I have a Half-Dragon (red) fighter (I can't remember what level and I don't feel like going and getting the sheet right now). She's hella beefed up with Bastard Swords.

And with Warhammer 40k, I'm literally just getting into it. I'm buying a Tyranid army and my friend is buying a Tau army.

My friends wanted to teach me how to play all of those games. Only D&D stuck though. (i guess it was because it was so easy to learn) It can be really fun depending on who the DM is . As for the books, you can find system reference documents online for free. (since its open gaming content its legal) I still don't know all of the rules so im not going to post the link (but i guess you can message me for it). It should cover the Dungeon Masters Guide, Players Handbook, Monster Manual, and the Epic Level Handbook. Which is all you really need. :animesmil

I am a games geek who boarded at a boys' school, so I've played most of them games. Magic and the games workshop titles are the ones I've probably played most heavily though.

Magic isn't really big over here so we didn't often play people from elsewhere and adapted the rules a little to fit our schedule and allow us to play more than once in our breaks, but since none of us had enough cash to engineer decks by buying loads of cards or many singles, so our deck structure despite colour preferences was pretty fluid, depending on luck and trades and we all new each others "Big" cards and combos. The only constant was that despite introducing half of us to the game, in the five or so years of play, Raiyuu almost always got owned.

Admittedly, I haven't played D&D in a couple of months, but I still giggle at even the most ambiguous D20 jokes when reading webcomics and am rather pleased Mountain Dew finally started directing their ads at the people who actually drink the stuff.
Nevertheless, I avoid geek clubs like the plague because they're always full of sweaty boys with lots of acne who talk very slowly and about nothing revolutionary.

Arvie, we must play D&D some time. However,
this could take years, judging by how long we've taken to not meet--twice.
We suck!!! : D

[/font']The only constant was that despite introducing half of us to the game, in the five or so years of play, Raiyuu almost always got owned.
Too true, even with my theoretically kickin' Blue deck with the card that made my opponent discard half his deck.

I used to play WH40K, too, but I got owned at that as well and eventually realised I was only really in it for the painting side. (Eldar and later Necrons, if anyone's interested.) I've just had a massive clearout of my belongings before I go off to Uni, and I've packaged up all my GW things to go in the loft - all they do is take up space in my room, because I never play anymore, but I've spent so long painting and converting them that I can't bear to sell them or throw them out.

Never got into D&D, though. It just had too great a nerd stigma attached.

I really don't play the above mentioned "nerd games", but I am married to a nerd. Back in the day he actually lucked out and bought all the hardback D&D books plus the little pewter figurines and stuff from a kid in his school for $50! I guess this kid felt that D&D was too nerdy and plus it was during the heyday of D&D being considered "demonic". We still have these books and probably always will.

As for Magic my only experience with it is through my friend Jeremy Cranford who is the Senior Art Director for Magic the Gathering. His job is to decide what art gets put on the cards and which artists to use. He is one of my hubby's lifelong friends. I should snag some cards from him and have him teach me about the game. Jeremy did give me one of the Vampire cards that he did the art work on, but I really don't know anything about that game. I just have the one card.

I have played Call of Cthulhu on several occassions. It's pretty fun when you get a group of friends together and play all night by candlelight. All and all I wouldn't consider it nerdy, afterall all the Cthulhu faithful know when the time comes they will be eaten first. (Nerd Alert: Being eaten first is a good thing since you don't have to watch all your love ones dying. It's an honor to be eaten first!) Ok, I guess I am a nerd.

Traumatize? You're supposed to use that on yourself, and then demolish your opponent with a Psychatog.

Part of the reason I lost all the time is that I could never put two and two together and realise which of my cards worked well as a combo. But Psychatog? I seem to remember owning one, but Traumatise was in my Blue deck. No Psychatogs for me.

I've never even heard of Call of Cthulu as a game, only as a song. It sounds a bit weird ... the object is to get eaten so you don't have to watch your loved ones dying? Think I'll steer clear of that one...

I used to be the Pokemon Card Master of my neighborhood. I had a magnificent collection. Sure, there were those 20-25 year olds with all the Japanese cards, and like, thousands of rare japanese cards you would die for - I wasn't that. But for the generic 12ish year old, I ruled. I had tons of cards, from rockets, to originals, to gym leaders. I still have them all perfectly ordered, arranged in League (Gym Leader, Rocket, Original, etc.) and subordered into elemental type (fire pokemon, grass type).

Let's see.. I had over 50 holos, including Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise, Chancey, and original Zapdos - my friends I always called them the big 5 - and who knows what other holographics. I had a few special Rainbow Island japanese cards..etc.

I still have each and every one of my Pokemon cards. I would never try to pawn off or *shivers* give away, my collection after I put so much TLC into it. It's gonna stay with me forever ^_^. I always liked trading more than battling.

Let's see...I never played Dungeons and Dragons or Warhammer or those..unless you count t4lk1/\/g l33t and playing massive amounts of video games nerdy, that's about it.

Aha, so your deck was all blue? It's hard to make a good blue deck without spending an incredible amount of money. Basically it comes down to this: you can stop your opponent from doing damage to you all day... so how are you going to beat him? Blue is the worst color by itself, unless we're talking way back in the early days of Magic, where blue had both the strongest spells and some of the cooler creatures.

I had a good deck built around Mirrodin a while back that was nothing but artifacts and blue cards mixed in. I won a t1 tournament using a deck based around the following:

Isochron Scepter attached to a Vision Charm. Basically, you could stop your opponent from playing stuff by turning all of his forests into swamps or something, and if you felt like winning, you would draw and play more of this combo and swipe 16 cards off of his deck each turn. Of course, ample counterspells are a must to protect your scepters, but you're playing a blue deck, no problems there. The whole deck in total (without lands of course) ran me about $5. It wasn't anything major, and it's worth a shot if you feel like kicking some ***. Oh, and your Traumatize would work great here, even though I didn't use one.
