Well, coming from me i dont think that American anime is real anime. For one reason, Japanease anime tends to be drawn more intentivly than American anime. However, in my eyes the only reason America has even been trying to put out anime is because, ever day there are more people around the world who are watching anime more than the cartoons that America are making. So for me that leads to the conclusion that American amine is just trying to copy Japanease anime to get more viewers. So that means that it isnt really anime, just some cheep old American cartoon trying to copy anime.
To break it down...

Literal Translation

Anime = Animation = Cartoons

But in terms of how the word is used here in the west...

Anime = animation from the far east

Cartoons = animation from everywhere else

So, yes... and no.
I agree 100% with Bloodseeker. You can't get a better explanation than that. :D

i've been seeing a lot of ppl talk about this show on theotaku.com and i never really thought of it as an anime. but would u consider teen titans an anime? i can see how it could be an anime. it has the same type of art as some of thos funny animes like naruto and it has a lot more detail in the art then regular cartoons. and of course the japanese theme song. just really curious so let me know wut u think about teen titans. thanx everybody. :animeswea

P.S. and if a site administraters see this and says "there is already a thread about teen titans" don't get mad at me because i ran a search and it didn't come up.

In my opinion, while I find Teen Titans to be an amusing show, it's not an anime. The not-so-concrete definition of anime is "animation that comes from Japan", hence its other name, Japanime.

But anywho, while it may use some elements from the Japanese mainstream animes, it wasn't made in Japan, leaving that requirement unfulfilled. Once again, very good show, just not an anime.

Yeah, I really don't consider it anime. Not only do I find it alot more boring and simplistic then most anime's (excluding excel saga), but it also isn't as funny as it tries to be. The funny thing is that my 14 year-old friends love this show, and memorized the opening in fricken japanese, yet they hate anime and make fun of me for watching it every chance they get.

Yeah it's a form of Anime but I don't think it's Japanese. Who knows maybe it is One way you can tell is if you look in the end credits.

i have to agree with everybody that says they are influenced by actually anime but aren't actual anime. shows like avatar and teen titans, are just missing something that all other animes have that i just can't put my finger on. and of course, they're not from japan so even if u called it anime u can't call it authentic anime, more like a rip off of japanese anime.
The fact is that anime is so much more advanced then a regular cartoon it is hard to mix them up. more blood, deeper themes, complex stories, and extensive character development. For example, Avatar's story is cliched, has no blood, no themes, and from what I have seen, no character development. The big-eyed style may be able to be compied, but the complexity can not.
This is a completely wrong statement. The most successful anime in Japan, Doremon, has no blood, isn't deep in the least, barely has a plot, and doesn't have extensive character development. Avatar may have a lot of cliches, but they're cliches that were also used in Dragonball and Saiyuki, since they're all inspired by the same book. No blood, but it does get pretty thematically heavy at times, with a lot of death and war and revenge and stuff. And the characters do develop (i.e. Aang starts to mature as he progresses towards his goals, Zuko's backstory is revealed). Have you actually even seen Avatar? Avatar might not be as mature as some animes, but it's a very good show. Also, there are several deeper and more thematic American cartoons. Personally, I'd recommend The Iron Giant, a wonderful movie that acheives Ghibli-esque thematic integrity.

actually those teen titans and stuffs are made by japanese animators if i'm not wrong... the thing is they don't direct it... rather just simply follow their boss's... so all they have to do is animate... it is actually directed by american people... so can't blame them... they need work.. or they accepted the job... so it's their job..

I don't think so. Because in regular Anime the art style is still different and most of the time the story is more complicated and makes you want to watch it more. Take Inuyasha for example, the first time my friends saw it they didn't think it was too good. But, after the second or third time, they were trying to watch every episode.

So, I think the answer is no

Yes actually, Teen Titans is an anime... Most of this discussion is about Avatar really... The majority of TT is japanese folk, including one of my favorites. Ami and Yumi!!! You guys do know that Code Lyoko is an anime too right?

This is actually false. Teen Titans has a Japanese pop group doing the theme song, but the animation is done at various studios in different locations around the world and everything else on the show is done by Americans. It might be a bit confusing given the fact the creator of the show (Glen Murakami) and I think several of the writers are of Asian ethnicity, but they're all American citizens and therefore the show isn't anime. Code LYOKO is a French production. It just happens to have the inbetween animation outsourced to Korea (as nearly every cartoon on the air that isn't CGI or Flash does).

well in a literal sense Japanese anime, American anime, and American cartoons are all cartoons. Since if looked up in the dictionary the word cartoon would yield the definition " a deformed sketch"

then all the things mentioned above would fall into that category for various reasons :p

but of coarse thats not the question, the question is "is american anime (like teen titans) real anime?

i would say no, of coarse not, the styles are similar but not the same.

I hate how people make general statements about "Anime" Being from the east... Anime = Animation So anything that is animated is considered Anime its thats simple. Teen Titans is a "Anime" even if you say its not. It may not be as deep or bloody, violent ect but it is still considered a "Anime." Just because it is not of Japanese Origin does not mean that it is not a "Anime." People say it must be from the East(Japan) to be considered an anime. But that is false, Anime is Anime It makes no diffrence where is comes from or who made it.

As for style..... Look at Anime and tell me that they are exactly the same.... If you would ask me Cowboy Bebop would be american made, It is well done and its very clear. The Story plot seems to surpass that of a "American" Anime but the way its done... So many junk animes come from Japan the Animation itself is horrible. Inuyasha is Not half as decent as Cowboy Bebop in its drawing or editing but yets its still great.... So the fact of the matter is Anime is Anime...

With the Japanese definition, yes. But from a foreign perspective, using that definition causes the word to lose its significance. Why do we need to have or use an exact synonym for "animation," if that's all we mean by calling it "anime"?

EDIT: The problem you perceive (the sheer variety involved in anime, and the fact that it's impossible to pin it down if one sticks to vague platitudes about artwork & plot) is easily solved by thinking of it as animation which happens to herald from Japan. I don't see how that's an issue.

Personally, I do not consider Avatar and Teen Titans anime, because of this:

We know that technically anime only means animation, or a cartoon. But those that use that to say Teen Titans is an anime are being way to technical. The term "anime" has become more than that. It now refers to Japanese, Eastern made animations of a distinct drawing type/style.

Shows like Avatar and Teen Titans are yes, influenced by anime. They are anime-esque. My friends I refer to them as pseudo-animes. But do I think they are actual animes? No, they are western-made cartoons made to resemble anime because of it's popularity.

What happened to the good old days when it was called Japanime? This would clear up all the confusion...
