Knowing where you come from...is just as important as knowing where you are going.

My fathers German accent rang in my ears as I looked upon my families sword...a massive broadsword made of a dark blue stone that has been found no where else. The blade is smooth...perfect...all up and down it is craved 7 dark/redish symbols directly into the blade on both sides. It was found generations ago by another scientist relative searching for treasures.

Lifting it up into the air, pointing it directly up towards the heavens with it being held firmly in my grasp...I look down upon the kingdom which I have sworn to protect.

By permission of the great King Sirus of Minbar...I've been allowed to explore this new discovery. Rumors of an ancient tomb has been found on Nin lands...unopened...untainted by mortal hands. This has reached the kingdom of Nin as well as the Gwar. It is close enough for the Gwar to enter our lands and take this treasure. No has been able to enter the temple to reach the tomb for unknown reasons...no one has come back alive.

Since the King cannot spare professional help due to need on the front lines against the Gwar...I, Commander Yuri of the Minbar army must seek out only 7 who will be worthy enough to take on this quest.

"My God...who art in heaven...give me the wisdom to choose whom you see the right ones to join me in this. Give me strength...and guide my sword so that your will may be done...for thine is the power, glory, and honor forever...amen.........."

Walking out into the courtyard of the great white/pearl castle...Yuri wore his usual outfit. Well, it reallly wasn't an outfit. He rarely wore a shirt...and if he did, it would be merely some kind of silky vest. The only form of armor that he wore was a metallic bracer on his left forearm starting a little higher up on his elbow, being held onto his arm by two leather straps, and ending up as a metal glove on his hand.

The rest of him was a basic brown pants and black boots. His body was bulky...strong like an ox as he walked among the people with his massive broadsword strapped to his back.

His facial features however did not show his true age. Being a Commander of the Minbar empire...he was of significant age of about 35...but he looked more like 24 of age. With long blonde hair and brown/golden eyes...he had the most gentle face. But whenever he was anger...you could feel a cold shiver spread down your spine as your eyes locked with his.

About three dozen servants were working frantically around him...preparing the courtyard for the newcomers...the men and women that Yuri would choose from to lead this expedition.

The Gwar were headlocked with the human forces on the border...so there was no rush...Yuri was determined to take his time so that his choices were perfect.

"my lord..."

"yes Maliki..." Yuri answered as he looked down upon the servant before him.

"the preperations that you requested are almost completed...we with only for your approval to allow the strangers into the courtyard to recieve instructions."

"and they are all trainees of their profession correct Maliki?" Yuri responded...his voice calm and gentle...no indication of any kind of harsh tone in his question. If those around him respect him...he went over and above for them in return.

"yes...what shall I have them do when they arrive?"

"please escort them to their chambers within the castle as our honored guests...and by tonight during the moon's highest point...I shall meet with them here."

And with that...Yuri bowed to his friend and walked away to get something to eat.

...Only those worthy will learn of the secrets which we seek...

***

There you go...you have your instructions...the meeting will be held at night. Write whatever you'd like with your visit to the capital city...mingle with everyone and the town...and then go to your chambers. When you all are here and ready to go...I will initiate the first meeting with all those who have come. Keep this in mind...hundreds of people are coming...not just the select few of your...please remember that.

Also...for those who have not finished their profiles...please do that asap before I make my decisions at least. thanx a lot.

have fun...

Carthre entered the capital city through the main gates. Big mistake. There were hundreds more, just like him, trying to get into the party that Yuri would be taking to places unknown. Trainees all of them, inexperienced in their classes. And there were people of many different classes here. Mages, warriors like himself, mercenaries, thieves, hundreds of them, wanting exactly the same thing as Carthre.

Carthre walked on, just taking in the splendour of the city. It was like nothing he had ever seen before. The huge buildings, the sparkling glass windows, the clean streets. He had never been to a place like this before.

He was so preoccupied with the magnificence of the city that he didn't realise he had walked straight into the back of another warrior. This guy was huge. He was easily 7 feet tall, with a bald head that looked like he waxed it regularly, and a massive double-handed axe strapped across his back.

"You might wanna watch where you're going," he boomed, his hand drifting to his axe, "You might get hurt next time." He had put a lot of emphasis on the word "hurt." Carthre stepped backwards, raising his hands in the universal signal for "I'm sorry," and then he turned away from the huge man, turning so he was face-to-face with a woman with her face hidden by the hood of her white cloak.

"Hi," he said, smiling. She raised her head, to reveal a wrinkled face, with teeth sticking out of the mouth at irregular angles. Carthre swallowed a shocked gasp and turned away quickly, following the crowds. There was a registration point just ahead, and Carthre headed for that, trying to dodge in and out of the crowd to avoid being out here too long. It was beginning to get hot in the crush, so he managed to dodge his way through the crowd and get to the registration point.

"Name," said the bored-looking soldier who was sitting there.

"Carthre Letin," replied Carthre.

"Ok, Private Lewison will escort you to your quarters. You will be called when you are needed tonight," said the soldier, giving Carthre a bundle of papers and waving him on.

Carthre followed the young soldier who must have been Private Lewison, who led him up to a small room, with a bed in one corner, and he lit all the lanterns in the room, illuminating it completely.

"Thanks a lot," said Carthre, throwing all his stuff onto the bed.

"I wish I was doing what you guys are doing. It sounds so exciting," said Private Lewison, "But apparently I'm not allowed. I have to stay here and protect the capital, instead of "gallivanting around the world with Yuri." Protecting the city isn't as exciting as it sounds, you know."

"Hey, I'm sure you'll get your chance to shine eventually, Lewison. I'm not exactly much at the moment, I'm just a Private in the Minbar Army. I'm not even sure that I'll get chosen."

"Well, good luck anyway, sir," said Lewison, saluting Carthre. He mirrored the signal, and then the soldier left the room, closing the door after him.

Carthre liked it like this. When it was just him and his thoughts, alone. He settled down to sleep, and drifted off quickly...

Lio whistled in amazement at the city gates. If the gates were any foreshadowing of the city, this place would be beautiful. The doors swung open and he was amazed by the beauty and splendour of the city. He was completely oblivious to everyone in front of him. He walked along, almost as if in a trance. It was almost like walking into a dream world.

The buildings were beautifully created, and the streets were very unlike any he had ever seen. The shopkeepers were all very friendly, and so were the civillians. In some mannerisms, this place appeared very much like his hometown. He shuddered at the thought of what his home had become. He shuddered at the thought of his home, or what was his home. He then took a moment to examine the other's who had gathered here.

There were people of all ages grouped in this area. Form the elderly, to children who couldn't have been older than 13. Lio smiled. They've all got spunk, I'll give 'em that. He looked to his left and saw a giant man, at least 7 feet tall. He seemed angry, and was gripping his axe unhappily. Lio quickly walked in the opposite direction of the man. He was stopped, however, by a hand on his shoulder. An elder woman with crooked teeth was smiling at him, here eyes blank, quite literally.

"Such a stapping young lad as yourself must be quite the warrior, eh? But even warriors as skilled as your probably are need potions and spells to defeath ferocious enemies." Lio looked quickly for a way to escape. Luckily, a voice came from behind him.

"Your name, sir." A battle scarred warrior dressed in great battle armor was standing behind him with a spear. The old woman drifted away, and Lio smiled. Scary old broad. Glad this guy...came...for...uh..me.... He found that the man was leaning over Lio and wasn't looking very happy.

"Your name. Sir." Lio smiled weakly.

"Lio Garavan." The man looked down his list and grunted. He turned and began walking, then called back to Lio.

"Follow me. I will show you to your quarters. Hurry!" Lio ran up behind the man and walked behind him. He heard an angry voice from behind him.

"Dammit, I've ben waiting forever! I'm tired of this!" The sound of a bow being drawn caught Lio's ear. He quickly drew Balmung, cutting an arrow in half before it could reach the man before him. The man tilted his head back and smiled.

"Not bad." He walked up to a room and opened it, allowing Lio to walk in. He smiled at Lio, the scar over his right eye moving up on his face. He threw him some papers and laughed.

"Feel free to read that all later. I'd reccommend you took a look around the city whilst you wait. It's still light out, and Lord Yuri will probably nt summon you before then. If you need anything...Fight your way through the crowd and find me. By the way, I'm General Ridge." With that, Ridge exited. Lio threw his stuff down and exited his room, heading out the back of the building to see the less crowded area of the city.

The city was much more beautiful without the bustling crowds. It was tranquil, and he could hear the children playing. He smiled and took in a breath of fresh air. He walked down with his hands in his pockets, but didn't take more than three steps before a ball came colliding with the back of his head. A young boy ran over, his hands behind his back.

"Sorry, mister. Can I have my ball back?" Lio grinned and stood up, hadning the chld his ball. He watched the young child run over and play with his friends. Tears fell down his face as he watched the child play, as he watched the mother of the boy hug him, as the father leaned against the house with his friends and smoked his pipe. It was exactly like his home.

"These people are all so happy..." He could see in his inner eye the city light on fire, he could see the woman and children screaming. He shook off the image and walked over to the father. He smiled at Lio and extended his hand.

"Thank your for being patient with my boy, Lucas. My name's Scott." Lio smiled and took the man's hand, shaking it.

"My name's Lio. Would you happen to know of a good place for me to grab some grub around here?" The man nodded and pointed down the street to a diner. He patted Lio on the back and grinned.

"You bet I do. There's no better grub around here than that at Susie's diner. She's got the best food anywhere." One of Scott's friends sopke up.

"And she's got quite the figure." They laughed and another one spoke up.

"So do her waitresses." Lio laughed along with them and thanked them for their help. He walked down the cobblestons street and entered the diner. He chuckled to himself, amazed. The men had been right. All of the woman serving food were very attractive, and Susie was gorgeous. He walked up to a stool and grabbed a menu. Susie came over and grinned at him.

"What can I do you for, honey?" Lio smiled. She seemed kind enough. This town was beginning to feel more and more like his home. He was even starting to consider moving here after he finished his journey.

"How about some pancakes and bacon with orange juice? I'm famished." She smiled and grabbed his menu, putting her hand to his face.

"Coming right up." She left Lio sitting their, a large smile spread across his face. He spun around on the stool and surveyed outside. The litle boy, Lucas, was chasing after a dog, that was apparently chasing after his ball. Lio chuckled and thought about his childhood.

?What?s your name, sir?? Leonardo asked a man sitting at a bar. It had been a long walk through the city and a hard fight through the crowds. All he wanted now was a warm meal and a quiet nook. Things looked promising that he had found both in the quaint bar in the residential area of the city.

?Hey, I?m Lio. How about you?? Immediately, he sensed a dark aura from the man, but a good heart within. Instead of stopping the conversation, he gave him a chance.

?I?m Leonardo. Holy Sorcerer. You wouldn?t happen to manipulate dark energy, would you??

?Actually, I do. I?m a Dark Knight. Nice meeting you,? said, giving him a smile in between bites of his meal. Leonardo ordered stir-fry and a drink that was quite similar to soda, which left a tingling feeling on his tongue after taking a draught. He stirred the beverage by twirling his finger idly in the air, which in turn gently spun the liquid within the cup. It caught Lio?s attention, and got a passing smile as well.

?Very interesting how you do that.?

?I suppose it is. Sorcerers have many spells that do little but make life easier. They?re relatively easy to learn if magic is in your blood.?

?Fancy that.? After their small talk was done, Leonardo exited the bar and was thrown back into the hustle and bustle of the busy city avenues. He ran into several people, some of which sneered at him, telling him to watch his step, others who chatted with him for a bit and seemed like good people.

Once he had received his papers, he went to his quarters to call it a night. He enchanted a pen to fill out the questions that required no thought, and answered the more involving questions before he went to bed. While he was waiting, he practiced protecting spells with a fair deal of success. By the time sleep called his name, he felt he had accomplished something, though small it may be.

Three days travel and I have finally arrived at the valliant city gates of the capital. I remember vaguely of the city streets I use to play in with my Lord brother a short nine years ago. The massive castle that laid at the very base of the city, the cobled streets and beautiful horse-drawn carriage. If only my Lord brother could be with me now, to see me shine in this bright, vibrant sun as I do today. No longer cowarding at the hands a some ruthless male. He would be so proud of me. So very proud.

Cira passed through the massive gates into the lively city, finding herself loast in a massive crowd of various talents. Magi, warriors and a few assassins here and there. They watched her with careful eyes as she slither passed them all with her delicate and refined features. Her soft, pastel dress hung just above her knees, its short sleeves drapping softly on her shoulders. The material, at first glance, seemed see-through and drew more attention then Cira had first thought.

"Cira, is that you?" A faint voice fluttered across the crowd, drawing Cira's attention behind her.

"Julius!" Cira called out as she pushed her way through the small hoard of people before her towards the massive burly man.

Cira gave him a hearty smile as she wrapped her arms around his neck in a tight embrace. He returning the favor tenderly, so not to hurt. He lifted her off the cobbled ground for a moment before returning her to her feet.

Julius was a massive man of nearly seven and half feet in height, broad shoulders and arms that were thicker than Cira's thighs. He had been a mighty warrior upon the Martal ship some twenty years before she was born. He had to be close to his sixties now, and still some how just as powerful and young look as when she first met him five years ago.

"How be ye?" The thick accesent rolled off his tonge, causing Cira to smile wider than she was before.

"Great. I see your trying for the position announced throughout the lands as well." Cira nodded towards the men taking names just in front of the castle.

"Ye be correct. Didn't figurer there would be this much people, though." The massive man turned his head to look around, taking in all the massive crowd.

"Neither did I." Cira reached out and touched the man's shoulder the best he could. "I must be signing in now, Julius. Best of luck to ya."

"Ye too, las." Julius grabbed her arm and pulled her in for one more embrace before sending her on her way.

Cira made her way through the crowd relatively quietly. Stopping every so often to greet some one she had met along her previous journeys. Small talk of this and that, nothing too serious. As she made her way to the castle she bent her head back to take in its marvelous structure.

"Impressive, isn't it?" A young, stout man stood posed with a quirky smile.

Cira brought her head down to see the man and smiled. He was a goofy looking lad, standing there trying to draw attention. Cira turned her attention back to the man sitting before her.

"Name?" He questioned simply.

"Cira."

"Cira what?" He replied.

"Its just Cira." She placed her hands on her hips.

"Cira, then." The man wrote her name down and pointed to the strange looking man behind him. "He will take you to your room."

Cira looked up and rolled her eyes, gave a smile and followed the man into the castle.

"And this is your chambers for the evening." The young man opened the door and stood against the inside of the doorway.

"Thank you." Cira nodded as she tried to slide past him.

He reached forward and took hold of her waist, pulling her body against his. Cira gasped slightly as she braced herself with her hands on the wall.

"Now, where do we start?" The man asked.

Cira smiled. "Well, if that's all you wanted, all you had to do was say something." Cira brought her hands down across his arms, pulled him back off the wall. Before he knew what happened, she twirled him around, slammed him into the doorway and threw him into the hallway. Where he tripped and fell to the floor.

"Next time you decide to try and seduce a woman, make sure she's defensless." Cira snarled as she kicked the man firmly in the abdomen.

He groaned and climbed to his feet. Cira shook her head, smiled and closed her door to her chamber.

The rapid opening and closing of drawers breached the forest around the forge. Fayt was checking over everything to make sure he had everything needed for his voyage. If all went good and he was chosen he would be gone for a long time, although if he wasn't he would probably be back tomorrow. "Blankets, cloak, jerky, leggings, dried berries......" he tought to himself scanning though his travel bag. Satisfied he slung the bag around his shoulder and walked to the corner of his room. The corner was occupied by his weapon Caspar wrapped in cloth with leather bindings and shoulder strap. Grabbing it he took one last look at all he had known the majority of his life, he would be leaving and he might not return to this place of comfort for him. Clearing his mind he slowly walked out the door, continuing down the stairs.

He would be traveling to the beautiful White City, a sight he was accustomed to being on the edge of a forest next to the city. At night it was almost like having a second moon the way it defied darkness. Though pleasure was not the reason for this trip, he was going to try to do something a hero should have been doing, not a Blacksmiths Apprentice, he was going to try to be one of a few people to be selected to explore a ancient tomb, untouched by time itself. The Minbar army in most cases would have kept it within the army, but the need for those men on the frontline has taken priority. His thoughts we interuppeted abruply as he walked through the door to the forge.

"Heya Fayt, 're we ready ta go? Are yeh sure bout this too?" Melchior blurted out with a heavy brow and concerned eyes.

Fayt paused briefly before answering cheerfully "......I think that its what needs to be done, and who knows I might be back tomorrow, I'm sure there's many skilled mercenaries going for this opportunity"

Melchior let off a hoarse chuckly before going silent for a moment "Fayt, yer a skilled blacksmith, but tha things yeh lack are, experience 'n' wisdom. Both of these will come with time, as well as travel. Yeh have practiced with many a weapons under my instuction, but never agaisnt another or in a skirmish. I think these things are important in smithin weapons, you must truely understan a weapon to forge it to the limit of yer skill. Also, experience in the world will grant ya many a things, wisdom an experience alike. Yer like a son ta me, an your the heir ta me trade, so know I don't ask yeh of this lightly" The burly man choked out.

Fayt concealing his own tears replied "I am going because I may be needed to protect, and I promised you that"

"Aye....well take these, I wish I could have done full armor for yeh, but it's to short notice." Melchior stated tossing a bundle at his apprentice.

Fayt unwrapped the cloth revealing a set of gauntlets with bracers, a shoulder guard for his left shoulder, a pair of amored boots, as well as two long dueling daggers. Fayt put them on slowly marveling the craftmanship of his master.

"Thank you" Fayt croaked chocking back tears as he placed the daggers in his belt.

"Yeh, better get goin though, before it gets dark on yeh" His uncle said rushing Fayt out the door handing him his things " As soon as you get in the city head to the castle to check in."

They embraced once and Fayt turned and ran toward the city, words not wanting to leave his thoughts. The path was crowded with many people of a mindblowing variety, which only increased as he approached the luminous city. Making his way through the gate he weaved in and out of people, some dressed in strange foriegn garbs while others wielded odd looking weapons, though Fayts was out of the ordinary too. Fayt had been here acouple of times so he found his was quite easily despite the amount of people. The poeple where friends as usual especially the shopkeepers, to think the amount of business they must be getting. "Come to think about it, the forge has been rather busy also" Fayt noted as he approached the checkpoint.

"What be yer name?"

"Fayt Argentum" Fayt said uneasily at the mans piercing gaze.

"Ok lad, Hold on an I'll get someone to show yeh to yer quarters"

A man approached and beconed Fayt to follow, and after a few twists and turns he stood outside a thick oak door. The guide opened it and left after making sure everything was in order. Throwing his packs down on the floor, Fayt made his way to the bed. Anticipation shook him as he undressed and retreated under the covers. Slowly sleep found him as he drifted off into an uneasy dream, unaware of what would come in the future.

Kain was standing a hundred yards away from the huge walls of the kingdom with his bastered sword known as Nimcaznim at his side and his throwing daggers around his waist and his wicked dagger, Kraven, at his side as well with his final dagger resting comfortable in his boot. His guardian was rather uncomfortable being so close to a kingdom.

He wasn't sure if he was being hunted by bounty hunters or other mercs, but Kain had heard this offer about how some lord was looking for 7 recruits. And he had seen at least 20 or 30 people head into the gate walls, he figuered they were trying out for the same position. Azuroth was skeptical about the whole deal of a high lord searching for 7 people, he was never trusting of anything that came from some embassariy.

But Kain had insisted that he go and prove his skill, Azuroth soon had no choice but to give in to Kain's words. So he sent Kain off hoping he wouldn't be found out or killed because of what he was now.

Kain entered the main gate and saw the hundreds of men and women who had come at a chance to travel the world and take on the lords request, he knew his chances were slim to none, but he still wanted to attempt. He had been in the city no longer then a few moments when he ran into a brute that was a foot taller then he was with a giant axe. Kain just looked at him as the man gripped his axe.

"You know I'm tired of these puny rookies hitting me from behind." Kain held up his hands.

"Hey buddy, I don't want to fight."

"And that's why you won't live through this fight." The man swung the axe attempting to take Kains head off, it was a slow attack so Kain easily evaded it. He started talking to them as he was swining.

"I told you I don't want to fight. But if you push me I will kill you." The big man laughed as he kept swining his axe, people were moving out of the way of the axe but were watching the battle.

"I'd like to see you do it, come on kill me!" The man was laughing as he talked, Kain sighed. The last thing he needed was to have killed some one, he ducked down, extended his leg and hit the mans legs so that he would topple over. The man fell and his axe came down with him, as the axe was coming down right on his face and his closed his eyes. He waited for a moment longer then opened one eye and saw that the blade was touching his nose, he opened both eyes and saw that Kain was holding the blade up. The man sighed and Kain tossed the blade about a foot away from him, he then held his finger out at the man.

"I told you I didn't want to kill you. It would screw me over if I killed you, but I see you again, your dead." Kain stood up and headed over to a soldier who was standing their with a check list, Kain stepped through the crowds to the soldiers. Some people were trying to stop him since he was cutting he just knocked them away and kept walking, the soldier stopped him and looked him over.

"Name?"

"Kain Savage." The soldier grunted.

"A merc. Well I hope you don't make it." Azuroth looked down at the man coldly.

"Just let me in." The soldier looked at his list again and nodded.

"Alright, Private Clarkson will show you to your room merc." Kain gave him a nasty look and then walked away with Private Clarkson. They walked in silence as the Private lead him to his room, as they were walking he was talking to Kain.

"Sorry about the commander, he had a bad experience with a mercenary." Kain smiled a little.

"It happens." He said coldly, the Private shivered a little bit with the cold feeling he got off Kain. Kain could tell the man was uneasy with Kains presents, he didn't really care but it was something that he felt good about. The private lead him to his room and opened the door.

"Well here you go sir, Yuri will see all of you later tonight." Kain just walked past him into his room and closed his door, he sat on his bed and did what any good mercenary would do. He sharpened his weapons and cleaned them up, awaiting his chance to do what he was waiting for. To prove his skill and become a master at what he did. After an hour of waiting he went out of his room and down the dark corridor made of mortar and stone with wooden pillars holding up the roof. He kept walking and soon found a door to the outside and exited the building, he had to squint so that the light didn't hurt his eyes.

When he was able to open his eyes he exmanied his surroundings looking around carfully to make sure he could escape if he was required to. Much to his surprises he found no way to escape except for the front gate, every other way was sealed off and guarded with hordes of men. Each looking a little more ferice and little more uglier, he snickerd at the men and proceded to keep looking around.

His expression went cold and he examined further the construstion of the buildings and the people that walked by him, he noticed people subtly looking at his scar across his throat. Finally a child came up to him and tugged on his cloak, he looked down and into the innocent blue eyes of this young elf boy. He was wondering what and elf was doing so far out here by it wasn't his buisness, he leaned down and looked the kid meniclingly in the eyes.

"What do you want?"

"Where did you get that scar on your neck from?" The child was not shy about his question, Kain chuckled.

"From a monster, and if you aren't careful. It will get you too." Kain said with a dark tone, the child didn't seem phased by what he said and then rushed off to another direction. He then saw the little elf boy run off to his mom and dad, his mother was holding a baby in here arms and was preganet with another, a flash of his old life hit him suddenly and he smashed his hand against his chest where his heart was.

He felt an unusual warm sensation, he was suddenly remembering his family and how he played with his sisters. He started to grunt and was straining with the feeling his chest, it was the feeling of love that Kain had not felt in many years. After a moment it finally faded and his cold, emotionless face returned and he resumed his personal tour of the city.

After and hour of so of just roaming around, the light had faded and he was growing tired. He returned to his room and found a stack of papers on his bed he groaned.

"I have to fill these bloody things out." He sat down and found a pen next to the paper, he then filled out each question, making sure he read them clearly and not to write something down that wasn't true about him. He sat there for about an hour or so filling each question out and putting details into the written parts. He finished and removed all his weapons, he put Kraven under his pillow and Nimcaznim was next to his bed, he then undressed and laid down in his bed slowly falling into a dreamless sleep. Takai lived far away from the capital city, and had started her travels the day word of the adventure reached her ears. She had walked quite a ways, but had gotten several rides on the way there, as well. But still, she was tired and couldn't wait to get there. She knew she was close.

A thick book lay between her two hands, and she was muttering something as she read it. Takai had recieved this book many years ago, and had practiced for a long time. However, she hadn't mastered a single one. They did work every once in a while, but she didn't understand why then and not now. But, as a habit, she continued to practice. The summoning chant she was reading now was supposed to bring wild dogs to her aid, out of thin air or her surroundings. She finished reading the enchantment and closed the book, returning it to the bag where it rested often.

Takai paused, looking around.

"Well..? Did it work?" she mumbled quietly to herself. After a few minutes, she sighed and walked on, shaking her head. "No.. Of course it didn't."

But after a few minutes of walking in gloomy silence, she decided to forget it. She was so close to the capital city, she could hear the chatter of the many people that she knew would attend, trying to get exactly what she had come for. Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by the rustling of leaves and the snap of a twig or two.

She spun on her heels, and immediately brought out Koden, her blade.

"Who's there?" she demanded, though in her head, she realized how timid her voice must have just sounded. There was no reply, but the brief silence was cut short by the same sound. This time, she could've sworn she heard a pair of footsteps.

"I know you're there!" This time, her cry was much more forceful. All fright she may have felt vanished, as she somehow knew she had the upper hand. Anyone trying to sneak up on her would have done the job by now. From out of the bushes crawled a shape. It was short, standing up only to her knees, but was still quite bulky, and was covered in something black and shiny. It took her a moment to realize what she was looking at was a big, black dog. Sheathing Koden, she began to wonder.

"A dog..? Doesn't look too wild.. But no mark of an owner.." Takai gaped a little more, bending down and petting the creature. "Wait a minute.. It worked!" she shouted, jumping up and down, and ended up startling the poor thing.

"Oh, sorry. Well.. You can go back now. I don't really need you for anything.. I was just practicing." The dog, however, did not move, and just stared up at her with his large brown eyes, and his tongue hanging out. "Go on. Shoo." However, the dog did not plan on leaving. "Ugh. Fine. They won't let you through the gates to the city, anyway, so I guess it's no big deal if you follow me," she told him, stomping down the path.

The rest of the way to capital city, which wasn't very far it turned out, was full of Takai tripping because of the dog barking and running around her feet. She scolded him many times, but he didn't seem to understand, much less care. When the two of them saw the extravagent gates that lead into the city, Takai felt relieved for two reasons. She had reached the place she had traveled a long month and a half to get to, and she was about to get rid of her canine companion.

The gates opened at her approach, and the two strolled in, though she was a bit disappointed that the dog was still at her side. "Don't dogs get bored every once in a while? Sheesh," she thought to herself, walking through the large crowds.

The city itself was a wonder. Spectacular buildings and so many different people. It was amazing and disappointing all at the same time. Suddenly, the thoughts of doubt managed to reach Takai's thoughts, and the further she walked, the more doubt she had. The dog, however, padded along the clean streets as if it didn't notice a thing.

"I envy you," Takai began, looking down at the dog. To her surprise, the dog looked up at her with a questioning look as if it was asking her why. But she shook her head, convincing herself that he was only curious as to why she had taken his attention off the city. "You have nothing to worry about. Well, just getting kicked out of the city once some of the guards see you is something to worry about, but you don't know about that, anyway. Lucky."

As the two of them pushed through crowds, Takai saw many interesting people, to say the least. However, it made her feel better because the deeper into the crowd she went, the less stares she got for her dog companion. A sharp and demanding voice cut through the chatter and got her attention.

"Name." Takai looked to the man who had spoken, then around her, wondering if he was talking to someone else. "Name, please," he repeated, this time the annoyance and wearyness of his voice reaching her ears. Not wanting to anger him anymore than he already was, she quickly walked over.

"Takai, sir," she bowed awkwardly, unaccustomed to the greeting rituals of such a sophisticated place. But the soldier just raised an eyebrow.

"That's it? Just 'Takai'?" She nodded, thinking back to when she had first stopped using her last name. "Alright. He'll show you to your quarters," he sighed, pointing to a young man that looked no older than she was. Takai nodded, bowed again, and walked over to the officer she had been directed to.

"Oh yeah. That dog needs to be kicked out if it isn't yours." Takai spun around. The dog looked frightened and let out a whine as he crawled behind her legs. She wondered why ge was acting like that all of a sudden, but she looked from the dog to the soldier then sighed.

"No. He's mine," she told him.

"Fine, whatever."

"Um.. Miss? If you'd follow me.." the young man began. She smiled and walked with him up to her quarters, the dog following at her heels. She tripped on several steps along the way, and her face was almost completely red out of embarrassment by the time they arrived at her room.

"Well miss, here's your room. I'll get in a request for a dog bed when I get back downstairs, and you'll recieve some papers later this evening. Have a good night." Takai smiled at the kindness of the officer and was about to close the door behind him when he called out once again. "Good luck."

"Thank you," she grinned. When he was no longer visible in the corridor, she shut the door and jumped onto her bed, placing Koden and her rucksack on the floor beside her. "I need a name for you. Lets see.." The dog curled up on the floor beside her bed as she thought quietly. He kept his eyes open as hers slowly fluttered to a close. "Good night Koinu," she mumbled before falling asleep.

Nepenthe Amatsu walked, willowy, through the courtyard and to the gates where she knew she would be admitted. More often than not, she stayed in the women's quarters, those where the ladies of high birth took their repose. And it was there that she had made her home, resting at the feet of one of the many that she was in the service of. A lady in waiting, a servant of the noble, and a beautiful creature in her own right, Nepenthe knew she was only as useful as she was a charming companion.

Her hips swayed with the movement of fabric over her body, the dark green broadcloth a perfect compliment to her thick brown hair and soft black eyes. The guards at the gate stiffened at her approach, the only thing letting them know she was coming the soft footfalls. She automatically raised a sleeve over her face, leaving her eyes and hair visible, then paused at the iron wrought gates. The male guards from the other side watched her warily, then recognized the gentle shimmer in her eyes and let her pass. She lowered her sleeve as she passed them, the heavy fabric pulling her arm back down to her side.

Once she was through, she focused immediately on the task at hand. She remembered her mistress waking her this morning, which was unusual at best. The worthy woman pressed a summons into her hands. They were from a man everyone had heard of. Yuri. An odd name, definitely foreign to them, but still, if the whispers were true, it would be worth her while. Her reputation had clearly remained a secret to most, and from the strange look on her lady?s face, she knew that her identity as an Enchantress was still largely unknown. Blessed with that knowledge, she rose at once, bathed, and then dressed in the flesh concealing garments she had always worn.

?Be careful Nepenthe. Even if it is only for a little while.? For her Mistress to take concern with her was touching. And she was grateful. She bowed her head dutifully, smiling pleasantly all the while. She wasn?t worried in the least, but it was comforting to know that someone would mind if she was harmed.

The woman made her way through the halls and into the courtyard where she was instantly greeted by name. The man, Maliki, bowed to her at once, showing deference that surprised her. After all, her name was known within the castle, and the women of high standing spoke well of her. She supposed that there would be many more arriving after her anyway.

?You must be Nepenthe Amatsu, no??

?That I am.? Maliki let her voice wash over him, her clear, gentle voice washing over his ears like a gentle shower of warm water. He nodded slowly, then beckoned her with one hand. She followed Maliki quietly, her skirts rustling when she raised them with her left hand as she climbed stone steps. They were going to a part of the castle she was never required to visit, one that was usually reserved for guests of high standing. She smiled ever so slightly, raising her sleeve every time they passed a guard, which was not too often.

Eventually they came to a corridor with many doors on both sides. He directed her to a room on the right, unlocking it with a very old looking key. The room they entered was dark, until a female servant that had joined them earlier drew aside the drapes, allowing sunlight to flood the room. The furnishings were of soft furs and cloth, covering the floor and walls.

?This is where you may rest until this evening, when you?ll receive more instruction. Please make yourself comfortable my lady.?

?Yes, thank you Maliki. You are too kind.?

He bowed himself out, shutting the heavy door behind him. Nepenthe gazed around the room slowly, then allowed herself to slip into her second sight. No magical enhancements in the room, no strange aural movements, and no spy holes. Thus reassured, she gazed down from the window, which gave her an excellent view of the courtyard. She smiled again and sat down at the window seat, her hands folded in her lap.

Savorying the taste of the meat in his mouth...Yuri looked around the bar from his stool as dozens of foreigners flooded in. They all took their places, not even taking notice of Yuri...they all carried weapons of all sorts...unaware of them sitting in the same room of the very man who would train them...choose them...judge them...

Yuri found this little gift to be priceless...his ability to blend in...to conceal his position and mingle with the common folk. He didn't like the attention...wasn't needed for someone of his stature. Well...to him at least. Many of the other superior officers and masters of sorts enjoyed their days in the spotlight; to be looked up upon. And even though there was some satisfaction in it...wasn't the most important of things that mattered to Yuri.

Finishing the meat and taking it down with red wine straight from the bottle...Yuri got up and paid the bartender who he had known since the war against Nin about 10 years ago.

"Quite a variety you've got on your hands here Yuri...any thoughts yet on who will..."

"Please..." as Yuri waved his hand at his friend with a smile..."don't mention that right now...it hasn't even begun Lance."

"Of course...my apologizes." Lance happily took the money from his friend.

"No need to apologize old friend...I'm sure all these men and women are quite qualified...for now."

With that Yuri grinned at Lance...and Lance returned the look.

Saying his goodbyes...Yuri walked out of the bar and onto the streets which he loved so much. His sword and bracer were in his chambers within the castle...he would need them soon.

...there are a lot more people here than I thought...

Quite bewildered, and almost feeling overrun...Yuri patiently and politely made his way through the crowd and headed towards the castle.

Walking beside the rather large line of guests heading into the castle to find their chambers...Yuri took a glance at all of their faces. It brought a smile to his face...seeing how rich the world has become in every way.

Suddenly Yuri accidently hit the shoulder of this mammoth...a 7 foot tall man wielding an axe. He immidiately roared in frustration as the entire crowd backed away from the beast and surrounded the two. Gripping his weapon with both hands...the man kicked at Yuri...sending him flying through the crowd and towards the castles wall structure.

"That's it...I'm tired of people touching me. I've lost once already....!!!" this guy was really pissed off now.

Yuri calmy rose to his feet and offered out a hand of friendship..."I'm sorry sir...it was not my..."

Without warning the giant swung at Yuri vertically towards his head...meaning to decapitate him. But with a swift movement of his arm. Yuri pulled back his arm and thrust it towards the long pole of the axe and stopped it before it struck him.

The giant tried to pulled his weapon away...but Yuri's grip didn't flinch. His once calm and peaceful face suddenly turned very aggressive and intense as his gaze upon the man before him drew dark.

Finally letting go...the giant raised his axe and swung downward. Simply moving his right shoulder back...shifting his feet, the axe missed him. Just as quickly Yuri was upon the giant and thrust his fist into the middle of it's lungs...going straight for the sternum.

Surprisingly...the giant quietly fell to the ground without saying a word...perfectly quiet. Finally the soldiers in the area pushed their way through the crowd, some pressed down upon the giant as others confronted Yuri.

"Commander Yuri...are you alright?"

"I'm perfectly fine." he said in his calm voice once again...not even bothered at all by the attack.

"This man is not to be harmed nor arrested" he commanded..."please...if you can..." he said in an amused tone of voice..."lift him up and bring him to a doctor."

Without mentioning anything else...he bowed to his men and left for the castle...leaving the crowd speechless.

***

Knowing that he'd have to go through the entire crowd once again...Yuri...now with his blade and bracer...he took the secret passage in the castle wall and made his way outside to the desert plains.

...finally...peace...

Outstretching his blade, he glided his sword across the sand with it's tip creating a large circle around him. Slamming Oblivion into the ground...Yuri lifted his right arm and placed it's palm upon his forehead. Muttering a chant underneathe his breath with his eyes closed...

"Flügel der Engel. ..horns der Dämonen. ..the ewige Schlacht von unserem Alter. ..fill mich mit Ihrer Wut.."

With its conclusion...flames burst alive within his chest and hands as he opened his eyes. Changing from red to gold again in an instant...Yuri shifted his body to the side...pulled his right arm straight across his body and outstretched it in from of him.

A red ball came from his hand and shot in the distance...out of sight...over the horizon. Finally...after miles of traveling...a red cylinder shape like light shot out from the distance and stretched forth towards the sky.

When the light had finally faded away...Yuri pulled out his sword and trained in fluent, and yet powerful movements and strikes while never leaving the circle.

.....almost time.....

OOC: Apologies for my late entrance.

Noah walked into the capital city and looked around. She pulled a roll of paper from his bag on his back and unfurled it, revealing two sheets, reading each. One was a map, and the other was the notice he had seen that had brought him here. Noah had been travelling for days to arrive and he hoped he would be chosen to aid on the journey. He read them several times before sighing and shoving them back into the bag.

The notice didn't tell him much at all, just to come to the capital city, which he did. He ran a hand through his messy hair in frustration and saw a large empty space. He ran to it and clapped his hands, and put them on the ground. The area around his hands glowed and a hill rose from it.

Noah put a hand at his brow to shade the glare of the setting sun as he scouted, and soon he saw a large crowd and commotion. He decided to check it out and slid down, snapping his fingers as he walked away. The hill behind him slowly shrank down until it was exactly like before.

Noah was asking people what was happening, but no one seemed to be paying attention to him, instead they were screaming names at a man in front of the crowd and he was getting other people to take them away. Noah was confused and pushed through to reach the front. Up close he could see the man held a list of sorts.

He looked at Noah and down at the list.

"Name, please." he said loudly over the crowd.

"What?" Noah couldn't hear him and covered one ear.

"Name, please!" he said louder.

"Oh, Noah, Noah Valentine." he answered just as loudly.

He nodded and ticked the list. He came closer so they didn't have to shout. He beckoned another man over.

"He'll show you to your quarters if you'll follow him."

"Uh, thankyou."

Noah hitched his bag higher on his shoulder and followed the man, leading into a building and through several halls until he stopped at a door.

"This will be your chamber, if you need anything, call out. You will recieve further instructions later this evening, until then you are free to do as you like. Have a good night." he said, opening the door.

"Thankyou." Noah replied, stepping in.

The man left and Noah fell onto his bed, he was tired from all the travelling, and this was the first comfortable bed he'd slept in for days.

OOC Same as Sakura, I apologise for not starting sooner. Much schoolwork was to be done and my brain has been a little dead of late.

Morag slid from his horse expertly as the throng of people ahead of him refused to part for the lonely traveller. Not that he had expected them to move suddenly as if he was royalty, but a little lenience would have been appreciated. Alas, this town did not seem as hospitable as he would have hoped.

The young man tugged on his horses reins gently and the white stallion followed him obediently, naturally causing people to part just enough for the two to get through. Morag knew his destination...it was the getting there that may prove a problem. He never had been very good with directions.

'Looks like I may have ta ask one o' these people fer directions...doubt they'd be very helpful, however.'

Morag sighed sadly and his mouth drooped into a small pout. Maybe one fo these people would feel sorry for him? No. No, he seriously doubted that would be the case for some reason. Just a look around at the heavy set features and stone-cold demeanours was enough to let the tired man know that travellers were treated as any normal townsperson would be treated. Which was fair enough, he supposed, it wasn't their duty to be guides, anyway.

"S'cuse me, thank ya, ma'am. Oh--sorry sir, my horse is rather clumsy."

The glares Morag was shot made him feel rather uncomfortable so he shot down a small side street first chance he got, hoping to meet up with another road leading to the residence he was to be staying in. he got lucky and found a street that was practically deserted, mounting his horse once again to make good time for his travels.

"Not long now, Wisp, ya'll have ya water an' carrots soon, eh?"

The horse whinnied in approval and seemed to quicken his pace, his hooves like drums on the hard cobbled street of the main city.

Soon Morag arrived at the front gates, dismounting once again as a guard met him outside. Before the man even opened his mouth Morag had flashed him a sly grin and stuck out his elegant hand, "Morag Dunstibar. I've travelled a long way, my friend, an' I?m in the mood fer some wine an' a bed, if ya don't mind."

The guard looked a little taken a back but registered the name as official, handing Wisp over to a stable boy as another servant lead Morag up to his chambers. The sorcerer didn't carry much with him, only enough to pack away in a sack he kept strapped over his back.

"Your room, sir."

Morag nodded and pushed a few coins into the boy's hand, "Make sure my horse gets a few extra carrots, why don'tcha."

"Yes, sir!"

Morag rippled his fingers in a goodbye and closed his door, dropping his bag and outer robe to the floor before stretching out on his bed. "Ah, finally."

OOC: As a note, the way Morag talks isn?t like a farmer, imagine him to be like Gin from Bleach (if you?ve seen it) Or someone with a well-to-do accent who is lazy when it comes to pronouncing things.

Late into the night...the church belltower ran, echoing across the entire valley as torches lighted up all of the castle courtyard.

A wooden platform was placed in the center with Yuri standing...he could see the entire field as people hundreds...almost thousands of men and women flooded in from their castle chambers.

Yuri could hear the frustration in their voices from being woken up. They were all dressed for the new day...their weapons of choice in hand as they awaited their first instructions. They all surrounded Yuri on his platform as he began to speak.

"I apologize for you all having to wake up so late in the evening...but I hope that you didn't expect this to be a easy."

His voice was strong and profound...so loud that everyone in the kingdom could probably hear him. It had authority...demanding respect..but at the same time...it was genuine...curtious...friendly.

"As you all are well aware...I am only looking for seven of you. Until I choose those individuals...I will be your friend...your trainer...and superior officer. Once choosing...I will open myself up too you like a book and fully explain what is happening in our world; and we shall become a team. But until then...I truly wish you the best of luck in these trials."

"You will have four criteria's for which you will be evaluated...and I will be watching every single one of you very closely. The first will be for intelligence and morality...the second will be for skill and discipline...the third will be strength and power...and the fourth..."

He paused........turning his attention towards a set of black gates on the far side of the courtyard...Yuri lifted up his hands...and guards on top of the walls unlocked the gate.

They were heavy as their movement on the ground seemed to scream from the friction...piercing everyones hearing.

When it was done...everyone looked out upon the desert............it was dark...the sands blew hard like it were a tornadoe, and everyone...from the wisest to not...could feel the evil which dwelled in the darkness.

Yuri turning his attention back to the crowd....pointing in the deserts direction...

"This will be your first test.........courage and valor. Out there....are creatures that have plagued these lands for centuries. They are sand beasts...big and small in all shapes or sizes. They choose the manor in which they will appear too you...they will kill you on sight without hesitation."

Yuri was concerned with the noises and expressions on most peoples faces...some were quite up to the challenge...and this pleased him greatly.

"These monsters all have one thing in common...a diamond. Somewhere on or in their body lies a diamond which is the source of it's power. You won't kill them all I assure you...but you must bring me back 5 of them...and you shall pass your test."

Before anyone could ask a question..."NOW GO!!!"

Noah was excited as he heard the first test. As soon as the gates were open, he stared out into the distance, it was dark and dangerous, but he would overcome it all, he hadn't travelled this far to go home empty handed.

"NOW GO!!!" as soon as those words left Yuri's mouth, the group charged forward for the gate.

Noah was at the front of the group and passed through the gates, he looked behind and saw everyone else branching off to a different area.

He slowed down from his run to a jog and kept looking left and right. Suddenly he felt something wrap around his left ankle and it pulled hard. Noah windmilled his arms and fell face first into the sand because whatever was around his ankle wouldn't allow him to roll.

Noah grabbed at the thing and it was thick and scaley. He followed it and saw a large lizard that was about the same size as him, it stood on its hind feet and it's tail was wrapped around his ankle.

Noah unwrapped it forcefully and got up. He squinted at the lizard and saw the diamond he was searching for, it was positioned on it's belly in the centre, he wouldn't be able to get that thing without killing it.

He clapped his hands together and outstretched his right arm to the side. A deadly looking sword formed and Noah held it at ready, watching the lizard to see if it was going to do anything.

After several minutes of waiting, Noah charged forward, aiming for the softer belly of the creature. His sword was caught by the large hands of the lizard and swung up his arms and got on the creature's back, the swing had dislodged the sword from it's grasp and Noah tried to stab it into the back of the neck as the monster flayed about, trying to get Noah off.

Noah discovered that the scales of the lizard were as hard as armour, so he flipped off and snapped his fingers, making the sword disappear. He clapped his hands again and a crossbow appeared in his hands, with a quiver on his back. The arrows were sharp and had a jagged head. These were armour piercing arrows. He slid a bolt in and aimed carefully, following it's movements and paying attention to the wind. He fired and the arrow cut through the air and buried itself in the chest, the monster roared and pulled at it. The arrow came out and the lizard charged toward him, claws outstretched.

Noah had quickly slid in another bolt and was trying to aim as the lizard thundered toward him. As it was almost upon him, he fired and the creature let out a dying scream as it fell backwards onto the sand. Noah saw that the arrow had pierced through it's throat and emerged the other side.

He snapped his fingers again, the crossbow and the quiver disappeared, he approached the lizard carefully and kicked it to check that it was dead. Noah bent down and pried the diamond from it's belly. He held it up and grinned.

"One down, four to go." he said to himself, tucking it into his pocket and jogging off to find more monsters.

Leonardo's heart skipped a beat in surprise as he was informed that he might die in the following challenge. As soon as the word "Go" was shouted from on high, he took a moment to focus himself, centering his mind. Magic took quite alot of energy and concentration to have any effect.

Will I survive? People did not ponder the same question, rushing past him, jostling the man amid the crowd. They ran to their deaths.

After another minute, he too ran forward with mustered courage into the fray and mire of combat. He heard bloodcurdling screams all around, growls from the beasts attacking, and the sound of swords slitting into flesh. It was enough to make a war veteran sick.

He felt death and dark energy flow around him, consuming him - and he repelled it instinctively with a series of minor spells. The death hung thickly in the air, and he inhaled it into his lungs, into his eyes flying from figure to figure, into his ears absorbing the tortured screams.

And at long last, a creature presented itself to Leonardo, their eyes locking in a primal contest to see who would live another day. Leonardo had no doubt he would prevail, and the idea was cemented in his mind by the flowing adrenaline.

The beast had two heads, both bearing rows of serrated teeth, fearsome scales, and very sharp claws. A crystal crowned the top of the hydra's head, catching the light magnificently. Without giving Leonardo a second to think twice, he was attacked fearsomely with a pair of claws lashing out at his chest. He jumped backwards without thinking twice. The teeth chattered in his skull from the pent up adrenaline running through his veins.

He blinked. Venom. Coming from its mouth. Dodge. Stop it. Something. Anything! He panicked, but his practice payed off.

"Holy!" He screamed it, and pointed his open palm of his right hand towards the oncoming black vemon. Immediately, a transparent sky-blue barrier swirled into existence with urgency, and repelled the liquid like a polarized magnet. It went into the crystal on the creature's forehead, instantly killing it. He went over to it, and saw the crystal dislodge itself from the beast, and floated into his hand.

"...One," he panted as he stuffed the crystal into his inner pocket of his cloak.

Kain ran out with the rest, Nimcaznim drawn and Kain was bent over to break the wind better. As soon as he was out the gate he head off to the left, a small group was behind him, he slowed down when he came to a part of the desert that seemed to be shifting. He came to a complete stop and slowly servalinced the land, watching every wave of sand move. At that moment one of the fellows that had gone the same way he did was pulled down into the soft sand with only a small yelp following him, Kain turned along with the rest of the group.

"Where did he go?" A warrior in the background, Kain turned to him.

"One of Yuris monsters." Kain kneeled down and dug his hand into the sand, holding there and closed his eyes. He felt a small vibration, his eyes shot open and he pulled his hand out. He stood up and looked at each man staring at him curelessly.

"Everyone watch out and treed carefully. Heed my word, because you will never be warned again." The men looked at him questionable and a mage disregarded what Kain had just said and took one step, a blind, orange colored snake creature popped out of the sand and grabbed him by the ankle. The mage screamed and the creature pulled him down into his desert grave, Kain laughed lightly.

"Fool." Kain looked around and saw a near by rock, he jumped on it and got a good footing, he smiled at the others.

"Stay on the rocks." Kain took a step and slipped somehow, he fell into the sand and the snake head popped out again and grabbed him by the leg, wrapping tightly. Kain didn't appear scared and didn't struggle. All only said one thing before he disappeared.

"I'll be back in a moment." He got sucked into the warm sand, the other men stood still. Unsure whether to move or not, after a moment or two a blade jutted from the ground. Kain followed, he crawled out of a hole in the sand and was now covered in a disgusting, slimy, green muck. He stood up with a neutral look on his face. One of the warriors ran up to him, risking a chance to be eaten.

"Where?s the monster?" Kain pointed to the hole ha came out of, there was a green ooze shooting from out of the ground, almost fountain like Kain walked to the hole and reached down into it, with a solid tug he yanked out a shine gem. Admiring its brilliance even in this time of day, he grinned and put it in his pocket; he stood up and turned back to warrior, mages, thieves and many other people that stood looking at him.

"That's one for me. I have four more to go. Now go off another way, before I kill you like I did the monster." Kain turned towards the open desert and sprinted off with Nimcaznim in his right hand and Kraven in his left, think he was ready to take on the challenges of Yuris test.

Thus commissioned, Nepenthe moved silently out to the fields, her body conforming to the land that she would have to travel over. Knowing that something like this would've happened, she had changed her dress to something tight that kept sands away, all hidden underneath her cloak. Aware that too much fabric would slow her down, she drew the folds of her wrap up and threw them over her shoulders. Remembering a lesson, she stepped sideways as she climbed a dune. Although she couldn't move like greased lightning over the shifting terrain, she knew it was better than to stumble forwards blindly. People might not have known it, but there was a very good reason she kept herself in gardens and outside. What better way to learn? As she walked she hummed and sang softly to herself at random intervals, then pausing and listening.

"Mmmm, sunlight sweeping cold shadows, far from this place, kiss the earth, stoop to kill, banish the darkness..."

She stooped for a moment, hearing other footsteps through the sand, those she identified immediately as those of her counterparts, other hunters that were required to capture the same prizes. She pushed her hood backwards, baring her ears, giving her better coverage. Unfortunately, that also meant that moonlight would glisten on her hair and the skin of her face. A slithering sound alerted her to an incoming monster. Completely inhuman, she knew that raw magic would be a bigger aid than anything else. She backed up slightly, focusing her mind as well as the rest of her body.

Reflexes were good, poise was good, but body awareness...knowing where your body was in relation to everything else, was perhaps the best thing going for her next to pure charms and curses. As she slipped into her second sight, she saw the aura of a diseased beast burst from the sands, spreading it everywhere. Nepenthe rolled away, in mid air, drawing her sleeve to her face to block the attack. It proved successful. The beast charged and she swiftly identified it as a aura poisoner. It had tentacles, it moved quickly, but like Yuri had told them, it fed on energy from the diamond imbedded in its stomach. She hissed at it and it hissed back.

A change swept over Nepenthe's face. From peaceful and gentle, she let the energy gather in her body, and it sensed the alter in her being. She roared and her hair flew out behind her, cloak following suit. It leapt forwards, propelled by its own mad energy. Her eyes half shut, she tilted her head to one side and let it attack. Its tentacle whipped her across her exposed cheek, cutting the skin ever so slightly. A slight flesh wound, a single drop of blood welled up. Thus encouraged, the monster attacked again, only to discover Nepenthe's magic focusing into two of her fingers. Her voice was a horrific shriek, piercing the ears of anyone nearby, and to the monster, it was agonizing pain.

"Blood of my body, take revenge on the aura of that which has wounded me."

With one movement, she touched the two fingers to her bloodied cheek, then swept them forward in one whiplash movement. Bright, seamless, and searing, the curse shattered the aura of the monster, and surrounded the diamond that contained its life. The curse jerked the diamond free and up into the air. Nepenthe swept out her skirt, turned in a half circle, and caught it in an instant. Then she placed her foot over its writhing body and completed the circle. With a scream that echoed hers, the monster died. Nepenthe picked up the diamond and placed it in her kirtle. She smiled and turned away.

Carthre darted out into the desert, his feet light on the sand as he flitted across the ground. Once he had reached a spot of the desert that no-one else had occupied, he used his training in the Minbar army to help him.

When you are in a tight situation, his captain had said, Remember not to rely solely on your sight. Use your other senses to feel your surroundings, because once it becomes dark, sight cannot help you.

Carthre remembered this, and closed his eyes, kneeling down and placing an ear on the sand. He heard something, and felt a vibration running through his body. He leapt to his feet, knowing that something was coming. He drew his sword with shaking hands. He had never faced a real enemy before, and he had only fought against his comrades in the Minbar army.

Suddenly, in a burst of sand, a huge creature burst up through the ground. It was a worm, well over one hundred metres long, with a huge mouth full of teeth at one end, and who knows what at the other. It slammed down onto the sand, a cloud of particles flying up, before settling, and began to slither its way towards Carthre.

"Remember, Carthre, focus on its weaknesses," he said to himself, "It has not eyes, probably used to darkness, lives underground. most likely it has a thick skin impervious to most weaponry."

He charged it, more fuelled by fear and adrenaline than bravery, and slammed his sword against its skin. The blade rebounded off, sending Carthre to the ground. The worm turned and altered its course to find Carthre.

"Ok," he said, "Definitely has thick skin. No eyes mean it relies on scent and hearing to find its prey. Possibly has some kind of sonar."

He dived into a sand dune, and rolled around, covering as much of his body as possible in sand.

"That should help with scent problem," he whispered, "Must keep quiet."

He stopped talking to himself, and stood very still. The worm stopped moving, and its head turned to try and find its prey. Carthre moved slowly and quietly towards the worm, making sure not to make any sound, but tripped over something as he crept. He looked down, and saw the body of another soldier, the big guy that Carthre had bumped into earlier that day. Two diamonds lay by his hands, which were covered in blood.

Carthre debated with himself over what to do. Taking the diamonds wouldn't exactly be completely moral, and that was one of the criteria Yuri was marking them on. In the end, he turned away from the body, deciding to deal with the problem of the worm first.

He formulated a new plan quickly in his head, and knew that he had to find the place where the diamond was on the worm's body. It was probably on its underside, the place least vulnerable to attack. So that meant he had to make the worm rear up somehow.

He stood on the spot, and jumped up and down, shouting and making as much noise as possible. He smashed his sword against his armour, rattling the interlocking plates. The worm turned to him, and charged. He rolled out of the way, but the worm still clipped him on the arm, sending him spinning to the ground. The worm turned, and screamed, a horrible, bloodthirsty scream, and reared its head up.

There! thought Carthre, I see the diamond!

The glittering gem was embedded in the worm's underside, and it had just revealed it by rearing up. Carthre ran in, his sword flashing, and grabbed the diamond, trying to pull it out manually. The worm began to scream more and more, and Carthre continued to struggle. He rammed his sword behind the diamond and levered it out. It plopped into his hand, and the worm writhed and screamed, swaying backwards and forwards. Carthre ran, getting out from under the worm, as it fell to the ground with an almighty crash.

Carthre felt the weight of the diamond in his hand, and slipped it into a pouch on his belt. He then turned to the body of the huge man. He sighed, and picked up the two diamonds that lay by his sides, slipping them into the pouch. Then, with considerable effort, he picked the man up and hauled him over his shoulders, taking the body back to the city, feeling that he deserved more than a lonely death in the desert. He needed a proper burial, and Carthre was sure the city could organise that for him...

Morag raised his eyebrows elegantly as Yuri barked out his last statement; half hoping that this was a joke. They hadn't even been treated to a banquet yet and he was making them go out and right monsters! Still, the rush of people showed Morag that this was indeed not a joke and so he resigned himself to the potential fate of pain and misery...perhaps death. He wasn't overly keen on the idea, but still, this is what he'd signed up for.

'Nuff talkin' to yerself, Morag, ya got work ta do.'

The young man swept his cloak to the side and walked out behind the rest of the crowd, flexing his long, slim fingers in anticipation for whatever it was that was going to attack him...eventually.

'So get these diamonds, take 'em back an' prove yerself without diein'. Sounds easy enough.'

The silver-haired man laughed to himself and walked away from the large crowd, knowing that there was no sense at all in walking with a load of people when he was looking for single monsters. Because, obviously, meeting more than two at the same time wouldn't be a very lovely encounter.

"Here monsters. Come and get yer din-dins." Morag sighed and surveyed his surroundings, seeing sand, trees and rocks. So they would be desert type monsters, then. Probably have hard hide and would most likely be reptilian. Maybe would be as quick but would be extremely perceptive.

"So...where are ya? Dontcha know I need me some of yer sparkly insides fer Mr Yuri?"

Suddenly, as if it was an answer to Morag's question, a heavy hiss filled the humid night air. Morag looked around, sensitive ears twitching to pick up on the sound.

"Ah, open area monster...ya would have good camouflage. Clever bastard."

He whipped around just in time to see a large snake shooting towards him, twirling quickly to the side to take a rip out of Morag's right arm. Luckily he was able to dodge and stagger back, hitting the trunk of a rough tree.

"Now, ya see, I need my arm...magic ain't no good if I don't have both hands, eh?" he took out a small dagger and drew it across the palm of his left hand, not even wincing from the short stab of pain that shot up his arm. "I'm sure ya understand, huh?" the young sorcerer recited a short verse as he rubbed his palm together, the slow trickle of blood dripping steadily to the sand and dirt below.

The 'snake', Morag had decided this was the best way to refer to it, made another lunge but this time Morag was ready. He finished with shouting his command, "Blood daggers!" and the trickle stopped, solidifying before shooting out into the exposed belly of the snake. It hissed before a short gurgle escaped its throat. The soft skin of it's belly was ripped and the poison in Morag?s daggers slowly infected it's system, causing the nerves to break and the snake to loose all control of it's body.

It spasmed and fell to the ground where it foamed before the life drained out of it's eyes. Morag frowned and swiped a bloody sleeve across his brow, his hands throbbing dully, not that he noticed.

"So...a diamond." Morag searched the monster's body, concentrating on the scales to make sure none of them were cleverly disguised as a precious gem. Eventually he decided that there was no harm in cutting up an already dead beast, so he pulled out his dagger and traced a line down the snake?s underside, feeling around carefully until he found the hard piece of stone. It was nowhere near perfect, but a beauty none the less.

Morag pocketed it before examining the rest of the snake, snapping off its fangs and placing them in his pocket, too. No use in letting those weapon go to waste, he figured. His grandfather had always said he was resourceful.

Cira sighed as she watched the other warriors rush forward into the hot swirling sand. This wasn't what she wanted to be doing her first night in a beautiful city. She wanted to be sipping on fine wine and flirting with the young gentlemen that had come from all over the lands.

Cira clenched her fists in frustration as she looked up towards the wooden platform that this Commander Yuri stood upon, watching every one run to their deaths. Fools. All of them were fools. She took another deep breath and exhaled, pulling her beloved sword from behind her and preparing for the up coming battles.

An older man bumped into Cira as she slowly started towards the gates. The man said nothing as he continued to charge forward. Cira shook her head and growled to herself as she slowly walked out onto the sand. The heavy sands swirled around her violently as she pulled the cloth mask over her nose. Her leather breeches, tunic and vest would help protect her delicate skin from the harsh swirling sand, but if one of the beasts were to slice through them would cause the would to turn fatal.

Despite the erge to pull her head in every direction as she listend to the screams of both beast and man, Cira stayed focused and used her years of training to pull herself across the soft desert sand. Making her way past the fallen creatures that lay scattered across her path.

A russling drew Cira's attention finally. It was heading north, in her direction at a rather quick pace. It had...four limps it used to propell itself across the hot sand, it weighed some where around three times her's and had no use for a tail. It had to have a tough hid to be able to move within the sand storm, another lizard like creature she figured.

Cira brought herself to stop, standing completely motionless and an easy target in the middle of the sand. She listened to its stride, a full out lope across the sand. Its thick claws digging into the earth as it dropped its jaw in preparation for its attack.

"One....two....three....four," Cira counted allowed, suddenly dropping to the ground on four. A black mass flew over her head and tumbled to the ground in front of her.

The massive lizard was about the size of a horse and it was clear now why the beast had no tail, it had been recently cut from its body. Blood splashing onto the bronze sand below. The yellow glow of its eyes showed pain and lust for flesh. His open jaw was now filled with sand, flesh and blood. He had already made a kill.

The beast rolled about on the sand as he made his way back to his feet. Cira slowly stood back up and stared into the beast's deathly stare. He licked his chops and made a strange chirping sound before throwing his mouth back open, spewing salvia, blood and left over flesh onto the ground.

Cira held her sword at her side, the tip laying softly on the sand, with both hands on the hilt. She was set, her target before her, the hazed glow of a jewel placed in the center of his monsterious chest when a sudden vibration in the ground destroyed her concentration.

She flew backwards and landed heavily on her back, searching for her sword as a massive worm rose from under the surface. Its massive spiraled teeth exposed and ready to swallow her hole.

Cira sighed, how did I get myself into this? She rolled over, finding her sword as the beast came crashing down on the very spot she was once laying on. She scrambled to her feet and waited for one of the two to attempt to attack her again. But everything went eerily silent. There were no screams or the sounds of death, she couldn't feel the ground move or hear it shifting under the other beasts feet.

Cira stood in her fighting stance, prepared for anything as she slowly circled around waiting for something to happen. But all was quiet.

"Damn it," she growled to herself as she slowly relaxed. "Well that's that I guess." She slowly started to move across the sand when a rush of sand and noise hit her all at once. Without looking, she swirled around, dragging her sword from above her down to the ground. It slid effortlessly through whatever was attacking her and the body fell with out a word. She slowly stood up and approached whatever had attacked her.

Cira pressed her lips together to see it was the older man that had run into her earlier. She had sliced right through him, starting at his right shoulder and down to his left hip. Blood poured out onto the sand, it was clear even in the sand and the night. She shook her head and sighed as she brought her head up, realizing that something had been chasing him. It was the tail-less lizard from earlier. He was coming to claim his prize, but was going to find the end of her sword instead.

The massive creature was slowing his gate as he approached the dead body when he realized that something was still alive, hovering around the carcass. He dropped his jaw again, let out a grunt of some sort as he flew through the air at Cira. She dropped to the ground yet again, but this time thrust her blade into the air. Six inches of the end of her blade sliced into the monsters chest, screeching across the stone-like scales as the beast flew over her head.

The beast screamed as it landed on its face in the sand. It called out as it tried to make its way back to its feet, blood splashing onto the sand below it. Cira gracefully jumped to her feet, sword in hand, and rushed forward. She climped onto of the beast, stood upon its massive head and shoved her blade into the beast's eye socket. It made a quick noise then fell limp.

Cira slid off and looked at both man and beast. She knew what she had to do. She pulled a cloth from her breeches' pocket and cleaned her blade, placing it back in its shealth upon her back. She pulled a knife from her waist. The beast was massive, and just one of its legs was the size of her alone. She slowly crawled under the heap of flesh and started carving at the beast's chest until a small jewel fell from its body. She pulled the cloth from her pocket again, and cleaned both dagger and jewel.

"All that for some stupid stone. I wonder what the purpose is of these things." Cira looked the jewel over before stashing it in her small pack. She stood back up and straighten her clothing, making sure there were no holes that would threaten to cause infection from the sand storm. Then she looked over to the man she had slain, thinking he was another monster coming to try and taste her flesh. She took a deep sigh and spoke out loud, "might as well."

She approached him and knelt down beside him, searching his belongs finding two more jewels. "Thank you, kind sir. May you find peace wherever your soul travels to next." Cira bowed softly to him and went on her way.

Kain had been walking throught the desert rolling three dimonds in his hand, he was satisfied with the pace he was setting for himself. And though it was not obvious, Kain was growing tired and the drying blood from the first monster was starting to reak something ferice.

Any regular man it would have made sick and passed out, Kain just ignored it, but he wasn't sure how much longer he could ignore the increaseingly worse smell. The fatigue of an earlier wake up and of killing three monsteres was ctaching up to him, but he pushed through it, it guardian always told him that life wasn't easy, you will have to rough it in order to survive.

Kain just smirked at the thought.

"But he is paranoid about everything." Kain said to himself, he was suddenly jumped by a black mass and was now rolling on the ground with something gripping him and trying to tear off his hand that held his diamonds. Kain kicked off the attack and sent the mystery being rolling in the soft sand.

Kain stood up and stashed the diamons in his pockets, he drew Nimcaznim and slowly made his way to the being that was on the sand hold its head. Kain stood over the thing and held his blade up to its throat, it was now lieing flat on its back. Kain could see clearly what it was now, it was a desperate thief.

He wanted his gems so he could turn them in and not do any work, Kain bent over with his sword still at the thieves neck. Kain reached into his pocket and pulled out one gem and held it of the thiefs face.

"Is this what you want?" The kid nodded eagerly, Kain smiled and stuffed it back into his pocket. He stood up and sheathed his blade.

"You won't get it, any of them." Kain turned around and started to walk again, the kid had a devastated look on his face, his face quickly turned to an evil glare. The kid stood up and charged Kain, thinking he would have the upper hand. As the thief was a a foot behind him, Kain drew Nincaznim and spun around cutting the kids throat in one fluid motion. He looked down to see the kid, gagging on his blood.

Kain looked down at the kid, he squated down and talked to the kid.

"This is what you get for being a thief, especially trying to jump a mercenary. We don't take kindly to people trying to rob us of our belongings." The thiefs eyes were wide as he was trying to breath unsuccssefully, Kain suddenly stood up and looked around. He could hear something approching, Kain immediatly hid behind the nearest rock he could find and leaned down so he would blend with the shadows, Kain played the waiting game from that point. He waited for a moment or two, thinking it was a false alarm when a hunched creatuer came walking over to the fresh meat, Kain smiled again.

"Looks like the thief came in handy." He said quietly to himself as the beast started to chew on the flesh of his victim, Kain waited a moment longer until the beasts head was completely down.

"Now!" He said as he leaped off the top of the rock and coming down on the beast, it saw him last minute and rolled away. Kain stabbed his sword into the thiefs corpse, looking down at his body for a moment. Then retuerning his attention to the creatuer at hand, it was walking on all fours, more like a gorrilla then a lizard monster. Kain spun the sword in his hands and lunged for the creatuer.

She felt the sand shift underneath her feet, and in accordance, Nepenthe spread her toes out, giving her better purchase. Then her eyes became slits and she went very still. Her body changed once more, going from the sweet, yet guarded female into the sort of enchantress one only dreams of. With a slow, stealthy movement, she drew her hand into the folds of her kirtle and removed a silver stiletto, the kind that pierce and leave only a very small wound. She smiled once more, and if anyone had been observing her...they would've noticed that she was like anyone else.

She smiled whenever she was happy. Sadly, that happiness came when she drew closer to her goals. And this time, the goal she had before her, would certainly be one worth pursuing. Camouflaged by sand, but not hidden well enough for Nepenthe's second sight, lay coiled, a monstrous serpent, with hinged jaws, mercifully calm at the moment. Showing, once more, her ability to blend in to her surroundings, Nepenthe began the relatively simple task of masking, then sealing her own aura. The beauty of such an easy ward was that once she had done it, she would appear as lifeless as sand to the serpent, aura sucker or not. The diamond was glistening in its forehead, and the scent of fresh blood was everywhere. A corpse lay underneath the beasts head, its face horrifically warped out of shape by what could only be neurotoxin.

The toxin was obviously deadly, but what was worse was that in the sleep of the beast, it covered its slightly open mouth, and coated the ground before it. Nepenthe, moving like a wraith, decided that this would be the best time to use a magic of illusion. Thus commissioned, she sealed, then dipped two of her fingers, those coated with her own blood earlier, in the flesh of the deceased. Using the essence of the unfortunate one, she passed them over her face slowly, then pointed them to the east, just over her left shoulder. A single breath from her lips animated the illusion bursting from her fingertips, and it rose from the sand, even as she gave it life. The monster's jade eyes snapped open and with a sibilant hiss, it hurled its whole body forward like a whiplash.

The distraction worked, clearly, and not only that, as it rushed forward, jaws open and dripping venom, Nepenthe sunk her stiletto down into the monster's forehead, piercing the flesh around the diamond and popping it out with a sickening squish. As soon as the jewel was free from the skull, she leapt backwards and let the monster writhe in the throes of death. The blood. It was everywhere, but not on Nepenthe. Like the monster's toxin, it too was deadly, and the seal from earlier kept her free. Unfortunately it also took energy.

"You would think....that a monster like that would be a little more intelligent, and less susceptible to simple illusions."

Nepenthe sighed and concealed the gem slowly. With luck, her next prey would be smaller, less bloody, and certainly less poisonous.

He could see everything...............

Unknown to everyone...the hundreds of men and women fighting in this desolate place...killing these beasts...killing one another...Yuri watched with great interest and concentration.

Standing on top of the White Cities highest walls looking out upon the entire desert...he could hear nothing but the whistling of the wind. The sand storm began to intensify as sight became close to nothing. Pitch black....sand threatening to rip the very flesh off of ones body.

Yuri cried for them...the ones that died in this. But he knew that it must be done...everyone knew the risk that they were taking. They all had a choice...they could have chosen not too enter...it's not forbidden to values ones own life.

He prayed that these people who's blood was spilt this night had no family...such suffering could never be compared to that of a loved one.

Sighing to himself as he continued his watch...not seeing...but sensing the events that were taking place below. His arms crossed....his posture unflinching in the winds as it blew through his long blonde hair...awaiting the sun to rise...

"Commander!" cried out an officer who came running towards him on the wall. "people are trying to enter through the gates...shall we let them in?"

"Yes of course..." Yuri replied as he turned from the desert and jumped onto the ground below without effort.

The gates opened up wide as people began to flood back into the courtyard. There were a lot fewer than that had left.

Yuri did not know whether they all had their 5 diamonds or not...but it didn't matter. He wasn't going to deny them safty as they all entered. Grasping Oblivion, making sure that none of the sand beasts entered through the gates...Yuri caught sight of a young man carrying this giant of a man who was clearly much bigger.

Never keeping his attention off of the gates...Yuri walked towards the young man...

"What is your name...and what are you doing?" he asked kindly.

"My name is Carthre...and I saw this man dead in the sand. I had met him earlier...and I wanted him to have a proper funeral."

Yuri grinned at the young boys compassion...and at his stupidity.

"As much as I acknowledge your valor soldier...there is no honor nor purpose in saving a dead man in battle."

Carthre was both shocked and happy at these two comments as he placed the giant to the ground and looked up at Yuri.

"I'm sorry my Lord......I don't have much experiance in battle...but I did what I felt was best..."

Yuri again smiled and put a hand on his shoulder..."you did fine...don't worry...at least you're alive'' He took back his hand and knelt down to the giant.

"where are his diamonds?" Yuri demanded...his voice more severe and direct...

Carthre instantly froze as Yuri got back to his feet. His gaze was intense...while his sight was upon him he could tell if beasts were entering the walls or not.

Slowly...the young man reached into his pack and pulled out 2 diamonds and handed them to Yuri in shame as he held his head down. Yuri took them and quickly placed them in his pocket...

"how many do you have then?" he responded...giving more tone to the word 'you'

"one my lord..."

"Then I think you better get a move on getting the other four dont you think?"

"of course!" and with that...Carthre left Yuri's presense. The commander walked to the entrance of the gate leaving the body behind and continued his watch as more people headed back inside the castle gates.

Lio frowned. He had been hesitant to run into the dark sand dunes, so the others had gotten a head start. He could see that some warriors had already gotten one diamonds. In actuality, not many had gotten diamonds. Most had died almost instantly after running into the darkness. Some warriors were even killing each other. Lio shuddered at the madness.

"No time for that. I need to get started. I'm far behind the other warriors." He slipped in and around the crowd closest to him. He was nearly invisible in the darkness thanks to his black clothing. He still had his shades on, though. He had embraced the darkness in what felt like eons ago, and he saw perfectly fine.

He ran into what seemed to be a ditch and stopped. He took the sand from underneath him and rubbed it around. It felt compressed, as if something had stepped on it. Then it dawned on him. The sand creatures weren't all that the desert hid. It hid a dragon. And a massive one at that.

He shuddered at the thought. Memories of his childhood flooded into his mind again and he fought to keep focus. He couldn't allow himself to fall victim to his despair. Not now. He was determined to complete his task. A noise from below him caught his attention before he could move. He sprung out of the way as three sand creatures snapped at him.

"Shit! I don't have time for small fry!" He jumped onto a nearby rock and watched as the things lowered back into the ground. Then the diamonds caught his eye. One had it in their back, one on their forehead, and the last in it's stomach. Lio smiled to himself.

"If I manage to live, that's three diamonds right now." He jumped onto the ground and made a dash fro another rock. He was merely trying to lure out the creatures, but he needed them to believe he was running. One came up behind him, going twice his speed. He lept up and did a backflip, landing on it's back as it came up. He drew Balmung and thrusted it into the creatures neck.

It cries furiously and began to ride around in a frenzy. Lio was thrown off violently, and right into the jaws of another creature. He spun quickly, kicking the creatures teeth and catapluting himself backwards as green venom was spit out of it's mouth. He gasped as one of his belts was hit by the venom and began to melt.

"Acid?!?! Shit!" He landed on his feet, but was knocked forward by the third creature. He hit the ground and rolled over swiftly as the creature jumped into the air and swooped down. Just as it came down, Lio was forced to move again as the other two jumped up from different angles at him. He lept straight into the air, and both went sraight for him. He laughed.

"Two diamonds, coming up!" He shot dark energy from his hands and launched himself higher into the air. The two sand creatures didn't hit each other like he had hoped. They masterfully dodged each other and landed back in the sand. Acid shot at him from all three creatures.

He couldn't dodge it fast enough, so he quickly created a weak shadow barrier. The creatures drove through the barrier and knocked him back into the sand. He quickly held his hands up and held the monsters mouth open as it attempted to eat him. The saliva from the creature fell onto the sand beside him and sizzled. Lio put his foot where his right hand was and drew Balmung. He slid it across the creatures face and rolled to the side.

The creature roared in pain and began to squirm. Lio ran underneath it and located the diamond. He dragged Balmung under it's whole underbelly, cutting it open. He quickly grabbed the diamond and dashed from underneath the creature as it came crashing down. Lio smiled and fell to the ground.

"One....one diamond...just, four more to go." He layed backwards but couldn't rest. The other two had been preocupied with other warriors, but at the site of their brother's downfall, they came after him. Lio ran swiftly, he didn't have the enrgy left to beat another, certainly not two. He stumbled and watched as the creatures came for him. He lifted himself and raised Balmung, but he didn't need to strike. Another soldier cam and impaled one of the creatures with his spear.

"You looked like you could use some help. Hope I can be of assistance." Lio smiled at his mistery savior. The two let out an all out onslaught of skill at one of the creatures, but to no avail. It knocked them back and let out a roar, like what seemed to be laughter. The mistery man growled.

"We'll never beat it like this. I guess, I'll have to shw my true strength." He yelled, and his muscles increased in mass. His body glowed, and his eyes turned golden. He looked to Lio with sorrow in his eyes.

"The call had been for trainees, but I lied my way in. I deserve whatever happens to me. Goodbye." The warrior ran at the creature, and sprung onto it, stabbing it repeatedly with his spear in it's back. It shook him off and ripped his bottom half off. As it did, the warrior shoved his blade through the creatures neck. The creature fell, and Lio ran to the man's body. The man smiled at him, the faded. Tears passed down Lio's face as the monsters diamond landed at his feet. He clutched it and put it into his pocket.

"Thanks. You're sacrifice will not have been in vain." He went for the last creature, fire burning in his heart. He drew both Balmung and Ragnarok, the first time in ages he had used both in battle. He was clumsy with both blades, though, but luckily that made his strikes random and unpredictable. He didn't have to beat this one, though. He just managed to take out it's crystal, and it fled. He fell backwards and closed his eyes.

He slept for what seemed to be ages. Whe he awoke, he noticed something that he hadn't noticed before. He found that the ground was uneven. He got up slowly and looked over the ground. More footprints. But this time, not random. It was a track. He straightened himself out and ran into the darkness, following the set of footprints.

*****

The tracks had seemed to stretch endlessly, almost as if the creature had walked off of the face of the Earth. Lio found that he had been running for an eternity, but he never slowed down. He could almost feel the monster drawing nearer, and the exhiliration fueled him. Finally the tracks came to an end. Lio's jaw dropped.

A giant cavern layed ahead of him. And, sticking it's heads out at him, was a massive two headed earth dragon, with a diamond in each of it's forehead. It snorted fire from it's nostrils and glared down at Lio. Lio gulped and almost dropped Balmung. The dragon borught both of his heads back, and launched two mighty fireballs at Lio. He ran out of the way and bolted into the cave.

The cave was beautiful, but he didn't have time to admire it's grace. He was running franticaly in an attempt to dodge the stream of fire being emitted from each head. He climbed onto an edge and impulsively jumped at the dragon, slashing frantically at it's eyes. He succeeded in blinding one of the heads, but the other just got pissed. It lanched a fireball straight at Lio, who was sent flying into the wall.

"Ugh!" He crashed down into the ground, almost unconcious. He attempted to pick himself up, but found he was suffering from a lack of energy. The creature slinked over to him slowly, prolonging the suffering to come. Lio raised his body up slowly, and stood. His body swayed, but he didn't care. He wouldn't lose now.

"Come...come and get it!" The monster shot two plumes of flames that merged into one massive flame. Lio found an extra burst of energy, but he was engulfed by the fire. When the flame cleared, he was nowhere to be seen. The dragon snorted in delight and truned around, only to watch as Lio sprang at it.

"I won't lose!" He hit the blinded head's neck with Balmung, and though the drahon skin was as hard as rock, he kept applying pressure an dark energy. He was going to show this creature what he was made of. He pushed harder, suspended in midair by the force of the blow. Finally his efforts payed off. The blade dug into the dragon's skin, and slid throught it's neck. Lio landed on the ground and smirked as the head landed behind him. He tilted his head back at the befuddled creature.

"Watch out. 'Cause here I come." He smiled, then passed out.He had pushed his body far, far past his limits. The creature took a couple of steps and stood over Lio's body.

OOC: I hope that's alright. Sorry I didn't post sooner. I've been really busy. Chief Predator can vouch for me.
EDIT: I made it so that another person helped me, and, as I said, I only beat one of the heads.

Dammit, how could I have been so stupid! Carthre cursed himself, I'll save the dead guy and take his diamonds, great idea, Carthre! Now I have to find four more as well!

Carthre trudged back into the desert, his spirits somewhat dampened by his encounter with Commander Yuri. His sword was limp in his hand, and he seemed to have no energy at all. He stepped carefully, though, watching out for monsters.

But suddenly, three huge beasts, scorpion-like monsters, burst out of the ground, leaping at Carthre. He only just had time to bring his sword up and block the attack of the first one. The second knocked him to the ground, and the third pinned him down. He saw the diamond glittering in its underbelly, and he reached for it, ramming his fingers hard into the creature's flesh. Sticky black blood poured from the wound, and the creature screeched, its mandibles trying despearately to claw at Carthre's face, venom dripping from them. Carthre's hand closed around the diamond, and he ripped it out, a torrent of blood pouring out after it. The creature writhed around and died.

Carthre slipped the diamond into his pouch, and leapt to his feet, his faith in himself restored. He could still do this, he could get five diamonds for Yuri. There were his third and fourth standing right in front of him. The two other scorpion beasts looked at each other, apparently unsure of what to do. They decided to jump at Carthre, and his sword slashed through their underbellies, the soft skin breaking easily against the blade. He dropped his weapon and ran over to the fallen beasts, pulling the diamonds out of their skin, and slipping them into his pouch. Now he only needed one more. He fumbled aorund in the dark for his sword, only to find that it was gone. He looked up and saw a small, sly figure running away with it. Obviously he had seen what Carthre had done and didn't want him to get any more diamonds.

Sneaky little...
