What do you think is the right length for an anime. Personally I prefer 26 episode, mostly because it allows good story development and not alot of filler. Anything higher then that usually ends up having too many pointless episodes (anyone remember the episode where Goku tried to get his driver's license in DBZ?) Anything lower then that sometimes ends up feeling incomplete and like it could be so much better.

I guess it's either because I'm busy, poor, and tired of fansubs that I want to watch movies more often recently.

I have fallen behind in school and I must graduate soon, so I can't watch Anime in big chunks like I used to. Actually, I shouldn't be on these boards every day either, but I am so hm...
I'm poor so I can't get anything legally. I can't even get things illegally if you want to resort to Hong Kong Subs (Bootlegs).
I am tired of fansubs. I had a phase where I would download gigs of Anime every month. But I'm tired of fansubbers that forget (or don't care) about the original point of fansubbing, and do things illegally. I'm also tired of the wait it takes to download an episode since the times I'm allowed to download has been severely restricted.

Plus, I love movies.

I hate to give a cop-out answer like this, but I think it really depends on what you look for in a series. An epic shounen action anime can't be packed into 15 episodes--but AIR TV would have felt bloated if it ran any longer.

Speaking for myself, though, close to half of the series that usually find a place in my top ten favorites are over 50 episodes. The rest are at least 26 (except for AIR, which has 15, and Boogiepop Phantom, which has 13 but kind of drops in and out of the lower portion of my list).

I don't prefer long series because they're long, but I do tend to like stuff with sweeping plot arcs and very well-established characters. Yu Yu Hakusho has 112 episodes, but at the same time it's a very lean show, with absolutely no filler I can think of. Full Moon wo Sagashite, with 52 episodes, also makes (surprisingly) good use of its length. If anything, Hikaru no Go (75 episodes) needs to be longer. 39 episodes was just the right length for Utena. And so forth.

I have to admit I don't really take well to movie-length stuff, either live-action or animated. Movies tend to be long enough to bore or tire me if I'm watching them all in one sitting, but at the same time too short to completely draw me in. OVAs I feel better about, for some reason, even when they end up being about the same length as a real movie--maybe I've just become dependent on the half-hour episode format or something.

I think about 50 or so episodes is good for me, though I was going to say something similar to Dagger. XD But I think 50's an all around good number. It gives you time to develop the story and flesh out the characters some without having to rush, but is typically short enough that you don't get tired of it before finishing the series.

And I think I'd even prefer the longer 100-ish episodes kind of series compared to a 26-or-less series. They're able to do what the 50 episode series do, but they have fillers and whatnot. But you can skip over those episodes (something I tend to do with Naruto XD) and tune in for the good parts.

Of course, that's just in general. There's series that pull off the 26 and less *really* well. I guess I just like to stick with series for the long haul. ^^

I think 26 episodes is the max for a good series that doesn't run into repetition and filler. Most of the series I like are between 13 and 26. I like some that run longer, but there are usually a lot of episodes that I find unnecissary. Some of the best ones I've seen, the ones that packed the most emotion and intense topics, did that in only 13 episodes (i.e.- Saikano and Haibane Renmai). X had a huge cast of fully developed characters and managed to explore many different sub-plots within the main storyline, and still didn't go past 25 episodes.

Unless it's an anime that follows no solid, main plot (You're Under Arrest, for one. Galaxy Angel is another), I'd say 50~52 is a tad too long. One hundred episodes is pushing it; take Slam Dunk, for example. Because of extensive backstories on each player (be it someone from Shohoku, Ryonan, Kainan, etc), many of its 20+ -minute episodes stretched only for 3 minutes (!) on the game clock.

Twenty-six episodes, if budgeted correctly, allows for good character development and one's sure that the main plot won't be lost in the few filler episodes that may be incorporated into the series.

I like the 50-episode length animes. A lot of times when I watch a 26-episode-long series, I'm left wishing for more. 26 episodes is just too short for a really good set up like Berserk or Outlaw Star. 50 or so episodes is perfect to give people their fill of the story and the characters without having it drag on to the point where everything becomes repetitive and dull. Of course, if they can manage to keep the series fresh throughout 300 episodes, I say go for it.

I do have to say any series that creates a huge universe like Outlaw star or .Hack (even though the story was more based around Tsukasa then the game) could definitely go fro 50 episodes or more. The problem is, these series are usually set up pretty linearly so it doesn't work out to well. Shows like Inuyasha and One Piece swerve off of the beaten path more whichs leads better to a longer series.

^ True, true. More episodes are required to show the entirety of a massive world but in series like Naruto, there are so many sidestories that one loses track of the series' point. Not that I'm complaining; I love filler episodes but when the show finally veers back to the main plot, I tend to forget the last story-relevant thing that happened.

Now there's a lesson for them creators: Don't make an anime out of an unfinished manga. Once the show finally catches up with the manga, you've got nothing to throw to your audience but filler episodes.

I like an anime show that isn't as long as Inuyasha cause Inuyasha has gotten a little boring cause of all the eps. it has. I don't want it to be too short though I don't really have an example of one. I want it to be enough to get the main point across. Inuyasha just adds eps. that aren't neccessary.

I tend to buy anime that is in the mid twenties, although I have afew that are in the lower teens. After 50 eps or so I tend to burn out and don't have the initial intrest I did when I started the series (Yes some people would call this A.D.D.) The only exception I have to this is Yu Yu Hakusho, I don't know why but I watched the whole series in afew days (I couldn't stop watching)! My FAVORITE series is Gravitation which is compared to others short, so I really don't think the length of the series is as important as the depth that it reaches with-in how ever may eps. ( Did that last sentence have any real meaning, don't know? (Darn A.D.D )
