FINAL FANTASY XI is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). The original version of the game was released in May 2002 in Japan, October 2003 in North America and September 2004 in Europe, with a subscriber base now in excess of 500,000 active accounts.

With the release of the Xbox 360 version, Square Enix will be expanding its cross-platform strategy, making FINAL FANTASY XI available to a much wider audience. Players will be able to choose their hardware and play on the same servers as existing gamers. The powerful next-generation capabilities of the Xbox 360 will provide a much more dynamic and visually impressive gateway to Vana'diel - the world of FINAL FANTASY XI.

I have to say I hate this idea. For years Final Fantasy has been the foremost RPG in circulation (except in Japan I hear Dragon Quest aka. Dragon Warrior is the big thing anybody know if there's any truth in this? I don't mean to assume, I was told it awhile ago) But Final Fantasy was essentially one thing. Hero, Object of affection who is something special for one reason or another, villian with plot to take over world which ends up to be trying to destroy the world. That's almost all final fantasy games to a T.

Then came Final Fantasy XI, restricting faithful FF fans in which I can't get internet service where I live. Except dial up which is too slow to play on. So I can't play FFXI I own it, but just because I keep every final fantasy that comes out (In the U.S.A. thank goodness for anthologies) I just feel that FFXI was not a great leap for sony and the final fantasy series but a great step back.

Also I realize I failed to mention the other FF titles like FF tactics, FFCrystal Chronicles, and any gameboy title because I dislike those as well but I could make this post 10X longer if I added those and this thread is for FFXI anyways

I guess its gonna be fine for Square Enix to release FFXI to X-box 360 but they also have to look at all the facts, final fantasy has been and will always be connected with Play Station, second, FFXI was a set back for the creators since it didn't have a wide audience since once you bought the game you had to pay to play it online(which sucks) and mostly above all things, final fantasy was cool because you didn't need to have an internet connection for it, much people that own Play Station have low internet connections which doesn't help anyone. If X box can make FFXI a game on which no internet connection will be needed I will bow down to them

The Final Fantasy series didn't begin with Final Fantasy VII. The series began on the Famicom and continued on with the Super Famicom.

Xbox 360 is the rockage cause when they show halo 3 everyone wil say xxbox360 has the best graphics. They are hiddening stuff like they said, and i might get this game for it cause i am getting the 399$ xbox360 for christmas but i am getting elder scrolls and perfect dark zero. After Christmas i will see how this game turned out and see if i want to get it or not.I think it will be a good game buti haven't really looked at i will go look at it now.But the game..i don't know about online it can be a advantage and might be a bad one.So i am saying don't get your hopes up about it guys cause some games like the PS3 games will turn out bad cause they are basically showing the good ones but not the bad ones.Sony have been working on this system for over 4 years and maybe 5 cause they said it on psm.So i think it will rule on online and i might see ya guys on they're so peace out.
The Final Fantasy series didn't begin with Final Fantasy VII. The series began on the Famicom and continued on with the Super Famicom.
Quoted for truth. FF never was and probably never will be exclusive to PlayStation.

But anyway, I don't see why anyone would think this is a bad thing. All it does is open the game up to a wider playerbase. How exactly is that wrong?

And so what if FFXI is online-only? No one's forcing you to buy it or pay the monthly fee. Square Enix made FFXI and targeted it at the MMORPG fanbase, and it seems to have met with decent success. Sure, there'll be some overlap there with people who are fans of the other FF games, but FFXI is targeted primarily at people who play MMORPGs. If that doesn't include you, well, that's your problem, not the game's or Square Enix's.

Also, I don't see where people are getting that FFXI was a step back for Final Fantasy. There have been what, two, three expansions released so far? FFXI would only get that much attention if it were successful and making Square Enix money. And if FFXI is making Square Enix money, that must mean a lot of people are playing it and paying that $13 monthly fee. And if a lot of people are playing it and continuing to pay the fee, it must mean those people enjoy the game. So just because you don't happen to play or enjoy FFXI doesn't mean no one else does.

It's not that FFXI was a step back as much as it shouldn't have been included in the FF series. Just like tactics and the crystal chronicles it should have been in it's own special category. I bought it but haven't played it b/c of the internet connection. I think the online game play with final fantasy's name was a good idea. But they should've thought it through a little more. They coulda made a lot more than they did off it....

When this came out on the computer two years ago, I picked it up the day it came out along with one of those pre-release T-shirts. I found the game to be very boring, and not catered to newbies at all. No one in FFXI really talk to eachother like they do in other games. In essence, you have a few thousand people running around a city not talking to eachother. This makes it impossible to meet people because there is no conversation to jump into, and it's intimidating to ask for help. All of this for $13 a month? No freakin' way, man.

However, I enjoy playing the $1/month game bundled with it called Tetra Master. It a very small group that play it, but I've made many friends off of it. Even saying this, most people in the game play by themselves and have VS ranks at 100.00, meaning that they've never played a human at all. Sad. I try to play any games I see open, and I create games and help newbies out. With such a small group of people, you really feel happy when you see other people following your example.

I hope Front Mission Online comes out soon, they've been promising that for like a year now.

Other than that, FFXI coming out for the X360 does not matter to me. It's too expensive and the experience you get out of it is still largely single-player.

This is, of course, just my opinion.

FFXI creator: "Why make billions when you can make...millions"
I've heard this argument a lot, but still no real, logical reasoning behind it. Really, what would've changed about the game if they had called it "Final Fantasy: Online" instead of "Final Fantasy XI: Online"? Nothing -- absolutely nothing. It would still be the same game and it would still have the Final Fantasy name on it. So why are those roman numerals so important?

And if anything, I'd think putting it in the main series would only increase its success. I mean, you said you bought it even though you can't play it. Would you still have bought it if it were a spin-off like FF Tactics? If the answer is no, then Square Enix made some money off you just by putting that "XI" in there.
