Religion Threads.

Religion Threads. Lately someone posted the religion thread What is your Religion?

Anyway, to my point. A thread about what is who's religion. I ask you: Why would you want to say what your religion is and leave it with that? You most likely don't care about mine. I certainly don't care about what your religion is. And apart from that, these threads always turn out to be people screaming to eachother about saying things the wrong way.
These threads have a question that can only have one kind of an answer. I don't see the point in them. Each page of the Lounge contains one of those threads. All in which members say what's their religion with no discussion at all. Then they move on to the next page for the same thread and do it over.

I don't have anything against threads which discuss certain religions. In fact, I love to read them every now and then. It's just that these threads make no sense at all. Half of the time they spark useless spam and flame wars.

---
This last part is more pointed towards a certain post in the thread mentioned above.

About the thread. To make it even more interesting, he added a poll. Yay for polls. The poll used in the thread was apparently incomplete. Some religions were missing. Oh no.

Really. It's only a silly poll. It has no influence whatsoever in anybody's life. If some options are missing, that's too bad. People always have the choice to just put it in the top of their post. The whole poll didn't add up to the thread anyway. If you're posting in the thread, you'll mention your religion anyway. Or your post would be considered spam, Whee.

Maybe I'm missing something (I did read it quickly), but I don't see any flaming going on in the thread to which you linked. I also don't see how it's lacking in discussion, compared to other current OL topics.

It's fine if you have no interest in the religious affiliations of other members here; I'm sure many people just couldn't care less. However, the criticisms you've leveled at this particular topic could just as easily be aimed at, say, "Nerds, Goths, Punks..." (which is frankly much sillier). Or if it's heated posts that concern you most, what about politically charged threads?

Compared to stuff like evolution and homosexual marriage, things dealing strictly with religion itself aren't really hot-button issues here, at least not in my experience. I'm just having some trouble understanding your position.

Really, what I said about these kind of threads can probably count for more kinds of threads, but that would?ve made the subject of this post too wide.

"Nerds, Goths, Punks..." is an incredibly lame thread, but I don't think I need to mention that. The thread quality speaks for itself. It's almost uncontrollable for the moderators.

Could you please explain that last sentence? I?m not sure if I read it correctly. Correct me if this does not answer your question? The point is that in politically charged threads, you have things to make debates about, which is a good thing. These religion threads just seem so meaningless. You say what religion you have and poof, that?s that. It makes no sense to go discussing about somebody?s choice of faith. And the thread proposal doesn?t give you room to ask anything to somebody else.

Suck it up, Boo. Not to be mean, but seriously, there's not going to be any rule against making Religion threads.

Like Dagger said, what you've said can go across the board for much more than just this religion thread. Frankly, I think that if you were to close the 'What Religion are you?' thread, you'd need to close 'Nerds, Goths, Punks' first.

I too, find religion threads fun. It's good to be able to discuss our varying theories about how we came about in a forum atmosphere, personally, I don't go into them looking to convert people anymore, I just enjoy discussing my POV on the matter..

It does get heated up from both sides quite frequently, but that only adds spice to the thread. As far as I see, no flame, no fowl.

Of course you do. You like to insult other people's religion. Yay for that.
But as has been said, what you've said about Religious threads could just as well be applied to any other thread in the history of every forum .
Really, no.

If people honestly think something like a political thread that, when it comes down to the wire, can largely be backed up or disproven by indisputable facts is comparable to a religion thread that's absolutely and entirely based on faith-based approaches, I really do not understand their thought processes.

Context is important here. Yes, similar arguments can be leveled at any thread, but the reason behind them is quite different. I'm not saying that I agree or disagree with these types of topics being dealt with more harshly, but I don't think that counter-argument floats whatsoever.

I kind of see Boo's point here. I can't really say that I would go so far as to ban these threads its just that the same argument appears time and time again even if it is some as simple and apparently none digressional as 'What is your religion?' It just ends up being a bloody mess of mangled views.

Prehaps we should limit it to one gore-filled religious debate per month ^_~.

I do also feel that the 'Nerds, Goths, Punks...' thread is dumb too but that is just my opinion and I would not expect action to be taken just because I think its pointless.

P.S Retri, would you stop lacing into people who have a valid and constructive point as if they were a constant whining nuisance. You seem to have a very low tolerance for criticism, even when it isn't directed at you.

Well, I haven't been here long enough to know, but if you have as many religiously themed threads on this forum every month as you do *now*, then maybe you should consider renaming Otakuboards to something else, because it's a good deal more than I'm used to seeing.

Then again, I'm used to seeing a lot of other garbage threads which *aren't* here. I suppose in a way there's enough control here. Plus the average age of people on this forum appears to be 15-ish, so there's really no point to taking any of it seriously ^_^
