First of all, I'd like to thank Revue ahead of time for a wonderful battle. To tell you the truth, I'm extremely nervous to be battling someone of your calibur.

Next, I'm posting this image two days ahead of time because I don't have much time to use the computer and make a quality image during the week. I hope you all don't mind.

Finally, the image I'm posting is more conceptual rather than having a blunt message. Please understand this while you're voting... I don't want to be counted out just because my message isn't readily apparent. I was going more for the vibe.

The Year of Miracles

Since I've yet to do something in celebration of the Year of Physics (Geek! Geek!), I thought of paying tribute to the papers Albert Einstein published in 1905. I'm not sure if that counts as great literature but to people in our field, it is.

♥ The text is set in Ringbearer, an LoTR-inspired font by Pete Klassen, Sylfaen and 1942 Report by Johan Holmdahl. Go on, support these talented people!

♥ I got the fission track photo from the website of Prof. Nelson Eby (University of Massachusetts Lowell). Gotta keep it related to science, yeah? ^^

♥ Enjoy!

Retribution: I appreciate the concept behind what you've designed here. I get what angle you're trying to cover, and I think you do it pretty well. I like the colours and what you've done to the individual boxes, but my main problem with your piece comes from the spacing. I think that you should either make the overall border smaller, or increase the space between boxes so that they are even. It just looks a bit odd with the different spacing.

Delta: Great Literature isn't exactly covered by Einstein I'm afraid ~_^

Nonetheless, this is your interpretation of the subject. Regardless, I don't like the style here. You make good use of symbols and individual components, but together it just...doesn't fly with me. Plus, 'Annus Mirabilis' is a term that I continue to misread, and get the worst impression, lol.

My vote lies with Retribution.

Guest Warmaster
If I may comment, I find the second submission more aesthetically pleasing by a long shot, but it is not nearly as appropriate for the theme as is the first submission. With the first, the subject matter is good, but it really doesn't look like a great deal of effort was put into it (whether there really was or not, it doensn't look like it). The second submission is a lot more professional-looking, and is something that can truly be considered "graphic design," but it seems to be for a physics journal and not for "world literature." So, giving appropriateness priority over appeal, I have to vote for the first one (Retribution).

Looking at these, perhaps a colllaboration by the contestants is in order...the first to select the resources, and the second to put them together into one attractive package.

lol

I'd have to disagree with pretty much everything Warmaster said. lol.
Retribution: I find the first submission much more professional looking than the second one. It's simple and to the point. Also, it makes great use of the principles of design. Though I have to agree with Baron Samedi on the issue of spacing. Since the border is so wide, I seem to be expecting the spacing to be at least a little wider.

Delta: The second submission intrigues me. ^^ Where the first submission reminds me of art and design in terms of museums and school, the second submission reminds me of all things digital. It reminds me of science and technology. There's one thing I don't like about it, the vector spirals on the left side. (If they are vector xD) The rest of the image has lots of texture and seems rough, like reality. But the spirals don't seem to fit in.

I'll have to go with Retribution for two reasons. 1) From a design point of view, it feels more right. 2) It fits the category much closer than Einstein. Sorry Delta, it doesn't mean I didn't like yours though. ^^

edit: Also these are just my opinions xD they mean close to nothing. What do I know about art? XD

First of all, both submissions are beautifully done.

Retribution: There is no difficulty in seeing that your submission is meant to represent great literature. The three separate pictures clearly depicts the very essence of the meaning of great literature as is it is a collection of written works of say a language, period or culture. The only thing I do not care for is the spacing between the three pictures and the outer border, it just seems like a little too much space compared to the spacing between the pictures themselves.

Delta: Although technically the collection of papers written by Albert Einstein is considered literature, your picture really doesn?t seem to reflect the actual papers themselves. It is very beautifully done, but it has me thinking of great mathematicians and not about literature. I would never have put the connection together on my own. Perhaps if you had used a picture of the actual paper Einstein wrote it might have been more apparent.

Although I think Delta?s submission is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, my vote goes to Retribution as I feel that Retribution?s submission captures the essence of great literature much better.

Deleted my first post on accident haha

Warmaster although you have a right to your comment.. Saying a lack of effort for this piece is incorrect. If you look indepth at the piece you will figure out that it was not a lack of effort what so ever.

Retri: Quite nice as always the design is simple yet effective and gets the point across the line clear. The colors do not fit "Great Literature" In opinion.. When I think of literature I think of indepth dark thoughts, so stick with the darker colors and not so bright and lively ones. The text and borders and amazing and quite nice as always.

Delta: Hehe I love the piece as a whole but it does not fit in as a "Great Literature" Piece.. Colors are way off but I do love them don't get me wrong. It fits the whole science feel but not so much in the "Great Literature" section. The image overall has a better feel than Retris but not in the way I was looking for :P
The image has a tech feel and not so much the rustic feel. "Great" Literature was made as you had stated in a time before you or me.. I really cannot say that we have any more Aristotles or Confucious's. But if you look at ancient or newer texts the paper seems to be older and darker.

You captured the "Time" And "Space" Theme perfectly and I wish that this was the case but it's not :P

My vote goes to Retri.

After much pondering, and Firefox dieing twice... here's my vote.

Retri: Your piece is nothing short of what I'd expect from you. Very high quality achieved, and captures the theme perfectly. Not that it shows any pieces that might be concidered great literature *a term open for interpretation*, but it does show just an over all classieness that I'd expect. Also, the choices and layout are nothing short of great. ^_^ And "Metamorphosis" has a strong tie in to my everyday life.... very nice. ^_^

Delta *as you go by now... =P*: Your piece is of a wonderful standard too. ^_^ Very high quality work. I can see you have interpreted the "Great Literature" theme in your own way, and I do respect that. Einstein's work is well worthy of tribute. The background, and over all layout of this piece is well done, but leaves just a little wanted in my views. Congrats on such a great piece though.

Through my own personal pondering, even though my reasons might not be illustraited as well as I'd hope here, my vote goes to Retribution. ^_^ Very nice piece

Excellent work, both of you.

Retribution: I really like how you put your concept of great literature together. It really fits, as not only is literature a collection of great works but I like how it is simple and uncluttered by modern technology. The layout is very soothing as it is uncluttered by graphic effects that didn?t fully exist when many great works were written. The only glaring issue I have is the space between the pictures and the final border. It?s just a bit to much as the inner spacing is so much smaller.

Delta: Your picture is actually quite the masterpiece. It is beautifully done and the graphic effects really look good together. It is wonderful, but it has a very modern feel to it that distracts from the idea of great literature. To me it captures the essence of math and how our technology has evolved as a result. In my opinion great literature was the power of the written word and not the ability to create stunning visual effects. It is superbly done; I just don?t think it fits the theme very well.

For this one my vote goes to Retribution as I think it clearly captures the very nature of great literature.
