serenayasha
:animeswea This is a dum question but i just can't get it. Anime is so cute how can you not like it and has so much action you shouldn't be able to leave your seat in fear of missing a sec. i know threre some anime that are just plain bad but come on thee has to be an anime for every one. ain't there? :animeknow :animesigh
r2vq
Anime is a form of media with many different genres. You listed two of them, Action and Cute. Some programs cross genres and are not limited to just one. Not everyone likes Television even if there's lots of different genres in it. You would think there is a television program for everyone out there. Not everyone likes reading even if there's lots of different genres in it. You would think that there is a book for everyone out there. I can go on. All you can say is that different people like different things. It's normal, it's wonderful, it makes the world go round. Be happy we're not all the same otherwise the Anime you loved so much would all be the same too. -ArV

eleanor
Considering I used to be a huge anime fan and now find most of it especially cheesy and horrific, er... 90% of anime is just bad. Of course there is always personal opinion, and that will vary from person to person. But I also agree that there is an anime for everyone who will give it a try. One of my friends who didn't like anime really liked Paranoia Agent when she saw it, probably because she likes thought-provoking things and such. I've tried to get her into FMA, but she's not really enthusiastic about it. Eh. I'm a bit of an odd anime fan. I watched Totoro everyday when I was a toddler (it's still one of my favorites), but then didn't watch anything anime-related until Pokemon and DBZ, which pulled me into the fandom. I started watching Cowboy Bebop, and then Evangelion, which I became obsessed with. And then between all of this I would dabble about watching other series, even if they were bad. I fell out of the fandom later, and then about a year later I re-watched some Evangelion shows, and sort was amazed at how much I didn't enjoy anime anymore. ... Except Kaworu. I love him. :] Then I re-watched some other anime to see how I liked it, and I ended up cringing at some parts and/or getting extremely bored. I had basically just dumped the fandom by then, only reading some fanfiction when I was bored. But recently I was swayed into watching Fullmetal Alchemist and I immediately fell in love with it. From that point on I've maintained a barely visible interest in the FMA manga (since the series has long since ended) and the Naruto manga. Sometimes I watch some new anime, the ones I remember right now being the Tsubasa Reservoir anime series, Loveless, and Kyou Kara Maou. All three weren't exactly my most pleasantly spend hours, but uh... whatever. I think at one point I watched RahXephon, which was excellent, just not my cup of tea. But during the summer next year I will force myself to find at least one other anime series/manga that suits me. So, with my overly long and irrelevent post about why some people don't like anime, I'd just have to say that a lot of anime in general could come across as very cheesy, akward, and bad to people. I.e., me. I know this whole post seems like I'm dissing anime, but I'm trying not to. I really love the FMA series/manga and the Naruto manga, and I'm sure there's more good stuff out there. I'm just too lazy to find it.
r2vq
I don't consider you odd Lunox. My story is similar to yours, but I haven't rejected anime to the extent you have...yet.
because they're stupid and dont no whats good for them.
That is very bigotistic comment. You assume that because they don't have the same interests you do, they're automatically stupid? -ArV
Stark
People don't like anime because it's just that--an animated show. For that very reason anime put itself down for many people, because cartoons have a certain stigma about being too imature for adults to watch and therefore it's classified as kids' stuff. It's because of this stigma that many people won't take a chance with anime, for the sheer nature of the way it's made. Sometimes people just don't want to open their eyes and see how...unusual it can be.

As soon as it's brought up they'll say "anime? You mean cartoons?" and then associate it with childrens' programming or Pokemon. They fail to realize that much like live action television, movies, and books; there's more than one genre, and thus it's not all the same thing. So there's bound to be at least one anime series you'll enjoy to some extent. But it's all just Pokemon and DBZ to a lot of people I talk to about it. It's pretty close minded but I usually don't care, and don't attempt to explain exactly what it is besides "Japanese animation". This one guy I know, makes fun of what he sees on Adultswim and calls it retarded, like FullMetal Alchemist ("I'm the only one who can use alchemy without drawing a circle on the ground! Whee!"), Paranoia Agent and some others; but he stills watches it all. I just find that kinda funny.
Umbra II
I do not know why most people dislike anime, but I do know why a friend of mine does. Basically, its a combination of bad explanation on my part and bad timing on theirs (seriously, THey came in when I was watching the begining to Outlaw Star episode 23: Hotsprings Planet Tenrei, with the cute begining, when they came in.) Add to the fact that they would think all anime is like dragon Ball Z (not to diss the Dragon ball series, but a bunch of yelling and screaming and not very intelligent material just doesn't cut the quality for them) try as I might, I cant convince them. When it came up, I even tried to explain a bit of FullMetal Alchemist, but to no avail. I've put them under the "lost cause" title.
EVA Unit 100
Well, going by Lunox's definition of what makes an anime fan, I guess then you could say I hate anime or that anyone with taste hates anime become 90% of all anime is ****. Then again, 90% of every wide catagory is ****. However, because I love the remaining 10% of anime more than almost anything else in the world, I do actively seek out anime that sound interesting to me (although I often get dissapointed :animeswea ), so I guess that would qualify me as an anime fan. I think the reason some people avoid anime is that they haven't been exposed to the good stuff and thus think it's all ****. That's understandable, because if the only American live-action movies you ever saw were stuff like Son of the Mask then you'd probably loathe all of American cinema, regardless of how good the stuff you never saw was. Long story short, the people who hate anime are the people who thought Spirited Away was "that dumb horse movie". :p
This one guy I know, makes fun of what he sees on Adultswim and calls it retarded, like FullMetal Alchemist ("I'm the only one who can use alchemy without drawing a circle on the ground! The way I see it, most people watch AS because they get ENJOYMENT out of the rediculous stupid-for-the-sake-of-stupid humor shown in AS's main attractions (Family Guy, Aqua Teens, Robot Chicken, etc.). While AS's anime can be enjoyed for deeper reasons, they often pick stuff like FLCL, Lupin, and Paranoia Agent that have crossover appeal to the comedy viewers. So that guy must be getting some enjoyment out of AS if he always watches it, it just isn't the same enjoyment you get out of it.
Riku
One of the reasons, as it's been said before, that most people dont like anime is because it is what the name refers it to- an animated show. Probably the reason why most people don't watch it is because once they see something anime, they automatically think that it's a kiddy show and turn the channel. If I didn't learn more about anime, I,too, probably would've thought it was stupid (no offense because I totally DON'T think that way now). I remember one time I was watching Samurai X on TV, my dad came in and said, "Why do you like watching those kiddy cartoon shows?" I explained it to him, but he really didn't seem to care much... :animeswea Anyways, if people did watch some anime a little longer and get even more interested (shows like FMA, Paranoia Agent, Samurai X, Neon Genesis Evangelion.. you know the shows I mean..), then I think that they would understand that it is more than just a cartoon. WAY more. Oh, and if they first see some other weird animes (anyone you think is really dumb), then that's a different story..

To prudes, anime's either kiddie or hentai (or both ^^) and something that decent folks shouldn't watch. Also, many good series are stuck in really-late-night spots. Even if one wants to watch them, one must consider and dread that awful feeling one gets when one hasn't had enough sleep.
DarkHieiX
I'd had to say that I think many people just don't like the the idea of computer rendered characters in a tv show. Many people like different things such as Reality television but I can't stand it. It's just a matter of what you prefer and sometimes that changes for a person as it has for many of my friends. kayutori_sama
Many times I've sat and pondered this question, then it occured to me one day:animeswea . They don't have to like anime. Yes, I do think anime is great, but not every one will like it, and you rub your fandom enough of them that they will like it. Now, then again, there are many ignorant people out there who won't even give anime a chance because they already have the steryotype engraved in their mind. They beleive just because it's animated, that it will be stupid and pointless. Which is very untrue. There are anime out there that are so deep and they just grab you and make you think. Even bring you to tears ( Grave of the Fireflies.) So, let me revise what I said earlier. If a person has watched anime, and given it a fair chance and still isn't too crazy about then let it go. Yes, introducing someone to anime and having them love it too is a great feeling, but that's not being realistc. Not everyone is going to love anime. I we all did, life would get boring. That's my 2 cents.

Soon, everyone would turn against each other...and things wouldn't be pretty.
angels_egg
I think another reason that many people dont like anime is because of the people who do like anime. I'm in the same boat as a few of you who say that like 90% of anime sucks, but I can go even further and say that 95% sucks. But what I'm getting at is that anime fan boys and fan girls like it so much that sometimes they lose a sense of reality and other people just kind of stand off to the side and go "huh?!?" Prime example is at my college there is a corner in the student center where i sit with my friends and we play stuff like smash bro's and watch anime. When something funny happens some of the people watching go CRAZY and start laughing uncontrollably! it is amazing. Then when im in class people talk say stuff like "those anime nerds are too loud. When ever i go over there it is like mini-dragon-con (sci-fi convention). So i guess it is the type of people who watch anime that other people dont like. I think that people are dumb for not like other people but if they want to not like people for who they are then they can be shallow.
Guest kuroinuyoukai
I think in life some people have stereotypes. You know- just because one anime fan is totally obsessed and freaky, they assume all of us are. Plus the fact that most people think anime is like kiddy cartoons. My mother thinks I am too old to be watching "Japanese cartoons". I think sometimes that people may be watching some of the dark animes and/or start watching an anime inthe middle of the series. They don't understand it and therefore hate it. Guest Vampyric_Angel
I think that its their choice if they dont like anime or manga. I mean, everyone likes different things! Or it could be that they dont want to be unfairly labeled a "nerd" for liking a stereotypical culture of Japan! I'm not a nerd and I like anime/manga! I am labeled a goth in my skool and I dont share my interest in anime with anyone else except those online at myO! :animesmil But anyways, I get the question. grecords
1. A lot of it isn't geared to mainstream audiences. Sometimes its even geared towards certain fans of other series, or genres. 2. A lot of it is bad to downright awful. 3. There are a lot of overused character-types, storylines, and concepts. When an anime does break ground it can be over-hyped simply because there isn't much that is all that different from the rest. 4. Its animation. Some still consider it childish, but as Adult Swim has shown there are many in the older demographics that are able to enjoy comedy based animation and anime. Where as other stations failed (Spike Tv's Gary the Rat, and Striperella). 5. The cultural difference as someone mentioned earlier. 6. You really have to be able to try new things in the first place. Some people have trouble giving strange new things a chance.

Perhaps some thirty years ago, anime wasn't as known in the West was in the East. Disney and Warner Brothers still dominated the animation genre and catered to the 12-and-below audience. Your parents were raised with these cartoons, yeah? When they grow older, that 12-and-below preference sticks and watching anime will seem childish (so they don't watch it).
