Goodbye, Face
Time to save another band thread... Whether you like them or not, you at least cannot call AFI untalented. As far as I'm concerned, these guys started the current punk/pop-punk revolution (good or bad). They are one of the most popular punk bands ever and produced several good albums and cd's. Do I like them? I like their older songs, mostly on their vinyl releases, as opposed to their newer cd's. While I don't think they'll ever make a better cd than the Art of Drowning, Black Sail in the Sunset was a solid one as well. Their newest cd, although it's a little old, doesn't appeal to me that much, I like "The Leaving Song Pt. II" and that's it. They turned into an old favorite after that cd. I haven't listened to them in a while. "Time to save another band thread..." - Heh, you seem to be doing a lot of that, don't you? ^_^ - Petie Yep. Ailes de Velour
I've been a rabid AFI fangirl for about two years now, maybe a little less. I know a lot of people who say their old stuff was better, few people who like their newer stuff, and many who've never even heard of them at all, which I find odd. However, since I started high school they've been a little more well known, especially around the emokiddies (who are just plain adorable). Anyway, I really love Black Sails through Sing the Sorrow, and I'm eagerly anticipating their new album. Their punk stuff doesn't sit with me too well, but I haven't given it another try since my friend is influencing me towards punk music. Maybe it'll grow on me? I mean, I like He Who Laughs Last, and I Want a Mohawk, but I haven't heard much else. I've only read the lyrics, and they say the eff word a lot. I really don't care to get into music that does. Anyway. Davey might be sexy, but that's not why I like the band. They's awesome.
Jakehammaren
davey has the best voice range that i have ever heard.
Obviously, Davey must be one of the only voices you've heard. I'm gonna beat around the bush here, because I don't want to sound blunt: Davey sucks. Whiny doesn't equal good range. Ever heard of Tony Kakko? Roy Kahn? Michael Kiske? No? I suggest looking into them and their bands (Sonata Arctica, Kamelot, and Helloween, respectively). Those are men who can actually sing. Davey has no range. Just because he can whine at a high pitch and *gasp* whisper and *omg* talk doesn't make him a good vocalist at all. RiflesAtRecess, you may be correct: they are talented. Not as musicians (definately not), but rather at marketing their Hot-Topic ready image to angry/"depressed" teens. This is a talent that has helped them gain commercial success. I despise AFI, but I must admit: my opinion is heavily biased. You see, I appreciate music that takes skill and passion to create. No wonder I don't like AFI! They lack the qualities that set the standard for my taste! How closed-minded of me. Love, Jake P.S.:
i cant even hit those notes!
Whine harder. Ailes de Velour
Jake, you're just a metalhead; =P. Davey doesn't have a vocally trained voice, but he does sing in falsetto. I don't think a lot of men can do that (save Claudio from Coheed and Cambria). I believe AFI IS musically talented; Hot Topic mallrats might listen to them just because the store sells a shirt with them on it. The type of people who listen to a band have nothing to do with the talent or passion of the band itself. While Davey's voice isn't trained, he does have a nice one. He's very poetic when it comes to writing lyrics, too. I just really love them. =D
Goodbye, Face
Yeah, I've said this to you before, Jake. Just because you don't like them, and people who buy over-priced band shirts listen to them, it still doesn't mean that the music is horrible. I'm not that big of an AFI fan anymore, but in 8th grade, they were all I listened to. I'm interested in what you've heard from them, Jake; as Sing the Sorrow is their worst cd by a long shot. Years before that they were an edgy punk band comparable only to themselves. There, now I'm done picking on Jake. If you think Davey has a good vocal range, I feel sorry for you. Go listen to Circa Survive and come back here. And for Jake, there's Line of Fire, which is Dr. Extremus Melodicus (the guy that does the guest vocals on a few of KILLWHITNEYDEAD's songs) and Collin, the drummer of KWD, Advent, and The Demonstraton; with some other members. I'll be picking up the cd when the birthday checks start coming.
Jakehammaren
I don't say they're not talented because I don't like them. I never ever do that. For example, I can't stand Slayer, but they are a talented group of musicians. I honestly think AFI is not a very talented band. I've heard Sing the Sorrow, Very Proud of Ya, All Hallow's EP, and Black Sails in Sunset. Yes guys, I am very opinionated (as you all know :animeswea ), but my opinions are never unsupported. I've heard old and new AFI, and my opinion remains strong. Look, I realize that it takes talent to even write a song, but that's about where their talent ends as far as I'm concerned. For example, the Very Proud of Ya is a freakin' three chord jamboree! Every song had similar if not the same changes and progressions, all they did was change the key (and sometimes they didn't even bother to do that). I'm not saying that they suck because mallcore kids listen to them, I'm saying that their [newer] music and image is practically geared toward them. Their old stuff had more integrity, I'll give it that, but I still wouldn't go as far as to call them talented (or the "best band in the world", as some say). I don't even call [older] Children of Bodom or In Flames the most talented bands in the world, but they are, however, my favorites. Then again, what do I know? I'm just a metalhead! :D (P.S. I do listen to lots of Classical, Folk, Trance, and Rock music too!)
Goodbye, Face
Hmm, I don't think I've heard anything off of All Hallow's, I'll try to check it out sometime; but I own Very Proud of Ya, and you can tell just from the name of the album that it can't be all that great. I didn't go into their albums because I for one, only listened to each of them once, just to hear what they sound like while keeping the quality intact; and for two, didn't expect that many people to question me after stating that they've only listened to Sing the Sorrow. I'm a little saddened that Black Sails didn't appeal to you either, that one and Art of Drowning are my favorites from them, I just gave them a listen again to be sure. I'm not saying that you're stupid or that you opinion is wrong or anything, Jake, I just disagree with you sometimes.
Jakehammaren
Well, my friend, would this be any fun at all if we always agreed? :D
Semjaza
I don't know that I agree with them starting a "pop punk" revolution. There were more important bands before and around them to that whole movement, really. Their first few albums (Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes through Answer That and Stay Fashionable) really aren't even "pop" enough to fit into that idea for most people, I would think. That's my opinion, anyway. Davey's vocals worked on the first couple of albums because the music was fast and it gave him that almost snotty, complainy voice a lot of punk singers seem to try to be going after. They sure as hell weren't amazing, but they fit the music. The band really didn't do much in really any way... they were decent, but not mindblowing or really all that influential. They were one of dozens of punk revivalists and they just happened to stick around longer than some. Nowadays the band seems to just be capitalizing on the slower, Black Sails Into the Sunset sound. This continued to really evolved to the current albums, where I don't think they're really all that reminiscent of what they once were. It's probably most obvious on Sing the Sorrow because that's basically where the transition was completed. At this point, however, I feel the band lost a lot of its drive... it's probably the most commercially accepted album (sales and reviews), but I feel like it never just breaks out at any point. Personally, I don't care for this slower (for lack of a better word) stuff from them. The band itself holds up, but Davey's insanely nasaly voice does nothing for me with songs of this type. He has range: high nasal or not-so-high-nasal lol. If anything, it just becomes obnoxious. I used to be a fan (again, like their first few albums), but I no longer really care for a variety of reasons.

Jakehammaren
You don't have to pretend to be kidding, it's OK if you think I'm rude. Many people here on the 'Boards do. Don't worry, it's fine if you like them - tons and tons of people do. I was just posting up my opinion (which tends to be a little too strong at times, I'll fully admit :animeswea ).
