I wonder if they'll be more thorough with the bug testing this time...

The older PS2s and XBOXs had a lot of problems, such as disk read errors and, in the XBOX's case, stalling with larger games.

I wonder if they've been more thorough with this generation's bug testing with this sort of thing. Either way, I'm going to wait about six months after their releases to buy the new systems.

I would be greatly surprised to see them actually be more thorough with the testing. I understand it just gets too expensive after a while.

Though with the PS2 they did actually offer to replace the first ones released that were getting disk read errors. I remember it as I got one of the very first one?s made and a year later it started giving me a disk read error message all the time.

It was kind of annoying, but Sony did replace it for free and so far the replacement has worked fine. ^_^

As for Xbox, well I haven?t a clue if they did the same or not. I never actually got one, as the system doesn?t have very many games that I like.

I had disk read problems with my first Xbox. I bought it at Best Buy and they did give me a new one for free. Since then, it has worked fine. I don't know if Microsoft themselves had anything to do with the replacement though. I do know that Microsoft did provide free power cord replacements when they found out that some extremely small fraction of the total original cords could cause an internal fire in the Xbox.

With my original PS2 though, it pretty much refuses to read games anymore. There's the lucky one out of a hundred (almost literally) tries where the game will start but it will end up failing later anyway. I was never sure if Sony was actually replacing them though. Do you know if they're still doing it?

And as for the next-gen systems, I'd hope to avoid problems like this but chances are, there will be some. I just hope they'll still replace the defective systems for free.

They only bothered because they were sued and it was part of their agreement afterwards. Sony sure as hell didn't want to help anyone out.

If anything, I think both companies should increase the warranty time to a year... like Nintendo has had for as long as I can remember.

Personally, I've not had any problems with any of the three systems and I've had them for quite some time.

A one-year warranty would give you enough time to see if the system needs to be replaced. 90 days just isn't enough. Of course, Nintendo has always been good with that sort of thing. It's too bad that trend hasn't caught on with the other two companies.

A one-year warranty would be a nice idea, just before the one year mark was when my PS2 decided to give disk read errors. I called them and at first they didn't want to fix it. I got mine when it first came out though, that was a hard lesson on Sony technology. Still it's fixed now and runs just fine. I'm glad someone made Sony fix their mistakes or else I would have been extremely upset.

I don't know if I'll even get a next gen console at this point, I'll be looking at games rather than company if I do. But just in case I'll probably wait several months after all the consoles are out and watch for error reports. Hopefully by the time I get one, assuming I do, any errors will be fixed or getting taken care of.

I would like to think though that even if it costs a little more to get the bugs out, that it would be worth it in the end.

Why am I not surprised? I guess all that had already occurred when I called them as I was given a case number and directed to the nearest Toys R Us store. All I had to do was give them the old one and I got a brand new one from the store. I guess I should thank who ever sued them as it meant my issue was handled quickly and without fuss.

I agree on the warranty. It?s kind of sad as so many devices use to be a full year and now so many of them are changing to 30, 60, and 90 day warranties. Though if you buy it from a place like circuit city, you can get a store warranty for less than $20 bucks that?s good for two years on most electronics. It?s only good for the item being replaced once, but it?s well worth it seeing as so many things don?t last very well these days.

I?ve saved hundreds of dollars by having the warranty as I?ve had several things break after the normal warranty expires.

I got one out of the first batch of PS2's as well. Within six months my PS2 couldn't read anything, I took it in to It's About Games and they fixed it for free. It worked perfectly for about a year and it stopped reading games again. By this time, the store had closed and I would have to send it to Sony to get it fixed, but they wouldn't touch it, as the warranty seal was breached when I took it to It's About Games. I read a guide online and cleaned the lens, it worked fine for another year then got hit by lightening. Yeah, God fragged my PS2.

I spent a few months playing GCN games and decided to sell my PSP (since it wasn't doing so hot at the time) to pay for my shiny, new PStwo. Since I've gotten it, I've had no problems. Yay. Stupid Sony. I'll probably never buy another system from them again. They just seem to always do things wrong.
