The setting is modern day British Isles. People have been disappearing from the area for the past month. After the last disappearance, a group is being put together to find out what happened to these people and bring them back.

Ashlyn sat at a table in the pub, with a blt sandwich half in one hand and the corner of a map in the other. Prof. Arcaine had asked her to look at the maps of the area in which people we believed to have disappeared. So far it seemed to cover the riverbank areas that had fringes of woods on them. A few were in the open fields though, so that was a loose connection. The strongest link seemed to be to the water. She set down her sandwich and reached for her beer, still looking at the map. She had to be prepared; tomorrow they?d be heading out.

?Well well, if it isn?t the prettiest girl in the isles?

She looked up over the edge of her glasses to see Pat grinning at her.

"What do ya want Patrick?? her voice came out in a heavy Irish accent.

Patrick slid closer so that she felt him lean against her arm ?I want you, to take off those glasses, set down that map and come out with me tonight.?

She smirked and brushed a strand of brown hair away from her face ?Well as temptin' as that offer is, I think I?ll 'ave ta pass.?

?Oh come on Kelly? He leaned over and put a hand down on her map ?You know you want to go out and have some fun. I?ll even buy your drinks.?

She raised an eyebrow at him. She was tempted to hit him, but that might be a bit extreme. Maybe someone would rescue her from this egotistical pain in the?.

"Perhaps the young lady doesn't want to come out with you tonight, Patrick," Alex said, walking over to the first sign of trouble, "Maybe you're pushing a little hard."

"This is a private conversation, Lance," replied Patrick scornfully, "No-one invited you to join it."

"Alex, would you join this conversation?" asked Ashlyn, to which Alex replied with a nod and took a bar stool next to her, "You see, now someone has invited him to the conversation, Patrick."

"Well, I still want to take you our for a drink sometime. Maybe it won't be tonight, but it will be sometime soon, I assure you that, Kelly."

"Goodnight, Patrick," said Alex, smiling, "I think it's past your bedtime. You'll need to sleep off all that beer you've been drinking anyway. We're going to need you sober for the expedition tomorrow."

"Shut up, Lance. I can handle my drink," Patrick said, stumbling over a chair.

"Apparently you can't, Patrick. Come on, you're going back to your room," said Alex, standing up and pushing Patrick out of the door. He quickly turned, smiled to Ashlyn, and said:

"Good night, Ashlyn. See you tomorrow."

He ushered Patrick up the stairs of the B&B they were staying at, pushing him to his room. Patrick fumbled with the keys, so Alex took them from him and unlocked the door. He took Patrick inside and made him get into bed.

"Now, you stay there and get a good night's sleep, okay?" he said, before oving out of the room, and locking the door behind him. Patrick wasn't going to get out tonight.

What to do now. An early night, perhaps? Follow Patrick's lead, and go to bed early, get up nice and fresh for tomorrow. Or I could go down to the pub and talk to Ashlyn for a while. Tough one, Alex thought, before deciding quickly to go back to the pub.

He walked in through the doors, and saw Ashlyn still sitting at the table. He took a seat next to her.

"I can only apologise for Patrick. You know what he's like once he gets a bit lairy. He'll calm down in the morning."

"I bloody hope so," said Ashlyn, "Or I might kill him. And that never looks good on a college report."

"Yeah, you do face some slight problems with that. Don't worry, he'll be sober tomorrow, and actually he'll be more subdued than usual. Hangovers can do that to a person."

They both laughed.

"So what are you looking at there? Maps of the locations where the people disappeared? They seem to be mostly around the water. Maybe that's a connection."

"I was just thinking the exact same thing. Something's funny with the water. I suggest that we go and check out the lake tomorrow, first thing."

"Sounds like a plan to me..."

Rowena sat at a small round table with a few people flocking around her. It wasn't her usual scene. She preferred a quiet evening at home with some close friends watching movies or discussing the current topic in their classes. But tonight she would have to deal with the bustling bar scene.

Turning her head slightly, she watched Alex escort Patrick up the stairs. The poor man probably had too much to drink and was causing a scene again. She took a heavy sight, bringing her attention back to the young man that was telling a wild tale of magic and great kings.

It was the same story over and over again. Arthur and his knights. It was getting old, but she knew that was the whole reason she was here; the stories and the disappearing people. At least every verison she heard from the various people was different in some aspect.

Rowena turned her attention towards the stairs again, noticing Alex walking back down them almost briskly. Some how, only for a moment, she couldn't keep her eyes off him. His brown hair bouncing on the top of his head as he paraded down the stairs. She watched him approach Ashlyn and sit down next to her.

Rowena shook her head and turned back to her very noise companions. "I think I'm going to head to bed," Rowena smiled politely to every one as she excused herself away from the small table.

As she started towards the stairwell she noticed Roger Morris sitting at a table with Professor Arcaine. She didn't really want to interrupt their conversation, but didn't really want to retire for the night either.

"Mr. Morris and Professor Arcaine," Rowena lowered her head slightly in an attempt to apologize for intruding, "I was wondering if I may ask your opinions on the missing persons. Its to help with my report."

Leanna glances up at the night sky the similarities between it and Massachuttes' sky remind her of being home. Those were boring times for her and her parents couldn't see why she was the one, level headed, independent, go getter that couldn't stay on and handle the family business.

She remembered that day, over 5 years ago. She walked out of her parents house with a moving truck full of boxes of her own things. All the things purchased with their money stayed. Even the car they purchased for her High School graduation stayed parked in the front yard the keys to it on the floor in the meeting room of their house.

For years she had told them 'no' to Law School but they thought it a phase and when the night came they found out her planned Major they were furious. Yelling and promises to withdraw her from Harvard where her tuition was paid. But luckily she had an ace of her sleeve. She had turned 18 over her senior year and signed up for plenty of universities without her parents knowing. The letters never even came to their mailbox. Both of her parents were shocked.

"Fuck you both, and your money! And that damned tuition you paid for me to go to Harvard."

She slammed the acceptance letter to Yale on the table in front of them. Their mouths dropped to the floor when they saw the letterhead at the top of the page.

"And before you ask, I have a fully paid academic scholarship too. So I won't be asking ya'll for nothing again."

Looking back always makes her smile too bad for her parents they haven't talked to her since she left. Her only correspondence to them is thru letters on their birthdays.

Looking around the outside of the building, Leanna yawns and steps back inside. Over looking all the Cambridge students and teachers that came for the exploration. A few wer missing but she already knew that too much drink had circulated and they were passed out in bed.

"Ahh I guess the wind blew you in our direction Ms. Rolle," said the professor.

"Well, I must say at least the air outside is clearer than in here, Professor, um Professor..."

"Professor Arcaine," said the young lady speaking with them.

"That's right," said Leanna. "Well lets hope that the wind can clear this brain of mine up to take notice to remember your name Professor Arcaine."

He glared at her for a moment. She stepped back and threw her hands up smiling as she replied back.

"If you can't take the sarcasm. Don't give it, Professor Arcaine, besides I think that you all were in a conversation before I came in. Please don't let my entrance intrude upon it. Have a good one."

She walked away from the three of them and approached Ashlyn's table.

"I wasn't too tough on him was I?" Leanna asked as she stood beside her and Alex for a moment.

They both shrugged their shoulders.

"Ah well, you win some you lose some." She breathed out deeply as she began to move away from the table, asking as she left." We wake early right?"

Ashlyn nodded. she turned and threw her hand up as she left. "See ya then."

Professor Arcaine simply sighed to himself and brought his attention back to Rowena and Mr. Morris.

"Forgive me for that...now...what was it that you asked me again?" replied Arcaine as he opened up his journal once again and looked up for his cup of coffee at the young and vibrant woman.

"Professor Arcaine...can you please tell me what your thoughts are about this entire situation?" she questioned as she settled herself back into her seat after the abrupt interruption.

"To be honest...oh...please...call me Leo...I'm sorry...let me continue." he took a breathe and gathered his thoughts...shifting his glance from Rowena to Mr. Morris and back to her.

"I don't know what exactly is going on...many variables in this situation haven't been solved yet...it could be an obductor, some unknown phenomina, or a mere case of dissapearances..."

Rowena sat quietly for a moment...seeming somewhat dissapointed in his answer...expecting more...

"But to be open with you my dear..." Rowena quickly looked back at Professor Arcaine..."I don't think something 'simple and normal' is going on here...for look around you..." Leo opened his palm and pointed to all the men and women in the area. "These are all the top student minds in the region...and I myself am an expert not in criminal cases...but in medievil history."

"What are you saying Professor?"

Leonardo leaned back slowly into his chair and took a sip of his coffee. His eyes seemed hidden from the steam of the coffee and from his hair...

That something isn't quite right with the world...something is not quite right...something more is going on here...

Armes arrived at the expeditions house late in the afternoon to find it empty except for the head of the expedition who showed her around and then left her to her own devices.

She spent the rest of the day that way, up in her room by herself, unpacking. Around 10 o-clock, however, Armes left her room and curled up in a chair in front of the fire in the main room of the house.

She looked up once as Alex walked through with a drunken Patrick, but other than that she remained pretty much absorbed in her book.

Armes was still reading about the languages of India when the clock struck three, she sighed, looking up at it. She didn't want to go to bed yet, most nights she had quite vivid dreams that involved mine shafts collapsing and her father's voice. Dreams that were not fun to deal with. She rermained in her chair for another half- hour before she stood and walked into the kitchen just off of the living room. Making herself a cup of cocoa, she sat down at the table and once more began reading.

I'll probably just stay up all night again, one more time won't hurt... She didn't hear the other person enter the room.

"Sounds like a plan to me..."

Ashlyn held up her beer and toasted him on it. She liked hanging out with Alex. She couldn?t quite put her finger on it? he was so casual, they could just sit at the bar and talk for hours without an issue. She looked up from her beer to see Leo talking with another professor and a couple girls from the house. She didn?t know those two, they must have been on a different project under one of the other grad students.

?Well, come on Ash, we?ve got a long day ahead of us.?

Ashlyn nodded and drank down the last of her beer before walking out with Alex back to the house.

__________________________

She sat on a green hill over looking the blue of the lake. The others in the group stood or sat near by, also observing the landscape. The weather was clear and sunny, there were no buildings in sight, no disturbance in the water, no trees to hide anything, no caves, nothing; no place where the missing people could be. Prof. Arcaine walked over and sat next to her.

?I?m sorry professa. I coulda sworn this area had to be where they disappeared.?

He smiled at her ?That?s alright, we haven?t checked it completely yet, you could still be right.?

She nodded and watched the other students. Emory was walking around with some techy device, Kei and Armes were comparing notes, and Pat was standing looking at the landscape. He had probably discovered what she had; that there was no way this was the area. As she watched, he started to turn toward them, and then, he wasn?t there. He was gone.

?Pat? Pat!? Ashlyn jumped up

Ashlyn looked around the room. She was sitting up in bed, the adrenaline pumping through her. She ran a hand through her hair and looked at the clock. She was supposed to meet the others downstairs in the dinning room in an hour. She got up, took a shower, blow-dried her hair, putting it in a bun and got dressed in a tee shirt and jeans.
She went down the stairs.

?Morning Ashlyn.?

?Hey Professa.?

?Ashlyn, how many times do I have to tell you to call me Leo??

She smirked at him ?Aparentle a few times more.?

He shook his head, hair falling gracefully over his eyes. ?Do you know where we?re going??

?Ya, I looked over the maps ya gave me. It was basic to discover where the people musta disappeared from, especialle since Katie vanished between the site and 'ere.? She sat down at the table across from Prof. Arcaine, and poured herself some coffee. ?I 'ope everyone is up for this, we could be gone for a few days, or longer.?

?Or never.?

She glared at him over her mug ?Don?t even joke. You keep making jokes like that I?m going to have to make this coffee Irish.?

?Sorry, couldn?t help it. I think everyone we?ve recruited will be fine? except maybe Emory? he doesn?t strike me as the adventure type, but he insisted on going.?

?True.? Ashlyn smirked in spite of herself. That kid was such a geek. She looked over the edge of her mug and waited for the rest to come down...

Rowena watched the Professor for a moment, his eyes vacant as he must have been in thought. She turned her attention briefly to Mr. Morris and then stood cautiously, so not to make either of them jump. She took one last sip of her drink and sat it back on the table.

Rowena lowered her head some and said, "I think it is time for me to turn in for the night. Thank you for your time Professor Acraine and Mr. Morris." Before either gentlemen could further the conversation Rowena slipped past them and towards the door. She looked over her shoulder at Alex and Ashlyn, shaking her head as she left the bar.

*****************

Rowena moaned some as she rolled over in her bed, slamming her palm onto the clock that was screaming at her to wake up. She groaned as she turned away from the clock and pulled her blankets up around her neck again.

"I need to get up," Rowena told herself as she shoved her blankets from her and sat up. The cold room wrapped itself around her body and she shivered.

She dragged herself from her bed and towards the bathroom, where she showered and prepared herself for the day. She ran her fingers through her still damp hair as she stared at herself in the mirror was more before heading downstairs.

"Crazy dreams are going to kill all my chances of sleeping," Rowena wrinkled her nose at the reflection of her scattered dreams last night.

"Good morning," Rowena called out into the kitchen as she walked straight towards the fridge, pulling out a gallon of orange juice and pouring herself a glass.

Both Ashlyn and Leo announced their greeting as Rowena walked over to the table and peered over the map that was scattered across its surface. Rowena looked over it, recognoizing most of its features and roads.

"So, what's are first move?" Rowena felt herself say, feeling some what out of character this morning.

Sleep came quick and hard for Leanna that night. No interruptions and she awoke around 5am for her morning walk. The air felt cool when she opened her window and the stars still shone bright. She still remembered how dark she thought it was before the sun rose. The saying still held its validity she sighed and walked over to the skin. She knew it was going to be a long day and she needed this moment to refresh herself.
She quickly dressed and left the room. The quiet air surrounding her and the night noises beginning to settle. The noises around her didn't worr her and she continued to move along the road, time passing slowly to her as she moved along the small road away from the hotel. A few people in the are began to stir as well but they were not taking in the serenity as she was. They were possibly bakers. The smell from their work areas filling the night sky. Other homes near and in the distance began to have thier windows fill with lights.
She whistled to herself and walked deeper into the town and more man made sounds began to fill the air. Cars started, people whispered. She felt that serenity she seeked intruded upon and she turned around and headed back.

_________________________________________________________

She came downstaris after her shower and waved to everyone. They were in the middle of their conversation so she decided not to intrude on it.

"Good morning, I hope you all slept well," she said the sun beginning to rise around the four of them as she went to the table and grabbed available cup pouring into it coffee milk and sugar, while they replied to her.

Bits of their conversation went on. Parts of it a little muttled to her as she tried to grab various pieces of it.

Alex drained his pint and then walked out of the pub with Ashlyn, back to the bed and breakfast. He walked with her until they got to her room, then said goodnight and went back to his room. He pulled his clothes off and threw them onto a chair, before collapsing onto his bed, exhausted. He fell, almost instantly, into a dreamless sleep.

----------------------

The alarm flicked on at 6:30, and began to blare out at Alex. He woke up and rolled over, smacking the alarm clock with his clenched fist. The plastic cracked as he hit it. He groaned, knowing that he would now have to buy a new alarm clock, and slid out of bed.

He dragged himself into the shower and twisted the release wheel, allowing steaming hot water to shoot out onto him. He stayed in there for almost twenty minutes, waking himself up completely. He dried himself and fished out some clean clothes for the day.

He was about to leave the room when he saw the notice on his door. It was nailed there with an old-looking iron nail, and the message was written on heavy parchment. The writing itself was and old calligraphic style, and it read:

"Lance, son of Avalon, we welcome you to our shores. However, your companions will not gain such an entry. The waters here are rough and deep. Be careful your boats do not go adrift..."

Alex ripped the parchment down, read it over a few times, then folded it and placed it in his bag. He assumed it was some kind of practical joke, and left his room. But as he walked downstairs, he thought to himself:

"The room was locked all night. I was in there all night. How could someone have gotten in, nailed a note to my door, gotten out and locked the door again without me noticing?"

He shook the thought out of his head, deciding to keep focused on the job in hand, and joined the rest of the party for breakfast. Everyone seemed half-asleep, Patrick was definitely very hungover, as he seemed to be finding the contents of his bowl of cornflakes very interesting.

"Morning, all," he said happily, "Everyone sleep well? Especially you, Patrick." Patrick groaned slightly. Alex smiled and poured himself a bowl of cornflakes and a cup of coffee, and sat down next to Rowena.

"Morning, Rowena," he said, smiling, trying to spark up a conversation...

Roger sat alone in his room, "Bah, guess I'd best get on down then."
As he stood and put his shirt on he heard a tap at his window, when he turned he noticed a small bird, tapping away at the corner of the glass, "Bloody ell bird, go away!" He waved at the creature as he walked toward the window. As he got closer he opened the window to shoe the stubburn bird away. When he did this he noticed somthing, the bird carried a white paper tied to its leg.

Roger untied the paper and the bird quickly flew off. "The round will meet again."
Thats all it said, in old english letters.

"Weird. Ah, I smell bacon!" He turned and begain his way down to meet with the others, "You blood well had beter save me some breakfast!" He called, the slight chuckle of the professer told him that they had not.

---

Roger finaly made it into the small meating of students after raiding the kitchen quickly, "You guys should think of poor old Roger Morris more often." he said as he sliped into the group with the professor in it, "Eh Leo, think we can get into this thing befor the boys in New York wake up?" the man chuckled slightly, "I don't know how many of you have met him yet, but folks this is Roger Morris, our warfare and seigefare expert," Rogger nodded, "Best there is. Any way, off of one subject on to the next, about these missing people, whats the word?"

Rowena could instantly feel her cheeks turn a bright red as Alex sat down next to her with his bowl and coffee. Rowena adverted her eyes as she stared at the map, all other converstation completely disappearing. Rowena could feel herself smiling as she tried to respond.

"Morn...morning, Alex." Why was she acting so ridiculous? This was just a guy from school, another student studying something similar to herself. Why was she getting all giddy and fluttery.

Alex chuckled softly as he took a sip of his coffee. "How did you sleep?"

Rowena's cheeks deepen in their red color as she tried to take a drink of her orange juice. "I dreamt, but I can't seem to recall any of it now."

"I had some one put a note on my door. It was really strange, with a rusted nail and parchment paper."

"That's bloody ironic," Mr. Morris spoke up suddenly. Well at least Rowena finally heard his voice. "Some bird delievered to me a very similar slip of paper as well."

Rowena brought her head up and looked about the room. It had suddenly grown really quiet. She finished the rest of her drink and reculantly ventured over to the sink and put her cub in it.

Pat snorted, attempting to laugh while drinking coffee. Everyone gave him questioning looks

?That was me, the bird thing. Thought it?d be funny.? He looked around, but no one was laughing. Ashlyn rolled her eyes and went back to her coffee. ?What? Oh come on, he?s always talking about the whole Arthur war strategy theories. Fine dude, I?m sorry. And I have no clue on the other one Lance, sorry man.? He got up and left the room.

Ashlyn got up and went into the kitchen to get some food. She was going to need her strength if she was going to put up with that for days on end. She pulled a cinnamon raisin bagel from the freezer and put it in the toaster. Leaning on the counter she thought over her dream. Maybe it wouldn?t be so bad if Pat disappeared. She felt a hand on her shoulder and turned quickly around to see Prof Arcaine looking at her.

?Hey, you ok? Alex was going to check on you but I told him to stay put.?

?Oh, well thanks Leo. I jus cana stand Pat some days, especially when he messes with people like that. Maybe we should leave 'im behind.?

?Hmmm, tempting.? He said, moving around her to lean back against the counter ?But maybe we could plant a tracking device on him and use him for bait?

Ashlyn laughed and saw a twinkle in the professor?s eyes. ?Thanks, I needed that.?

?Come on back to the table. We got to finish plotting our course, and then we can head out.?

?Actualle,? she said, reaching around him to grab her bagel ?I put a blue X on the map where I think we should start; everyone should get their breakfast down and get their stuff tagether. I?m going to go make sure Armes is awake...?

She remained quiet throughout breakfast. Her head plotting the many things she needed to make sure she had. As they settled down around the table with a basic plan in mind she interjected with a question.

"I just want to make this claer for myself. We will be taking a boat onto the lake righ?" She probably sounded like an amatuer to them all, but her head was thinking in to many directions.

Leo spoke up to adreess her question.

"Yes, its not a very large boat, for the lake we are going on is not all that big."

"What kind of boat-"

"How big is it and what equipment is on it?" Both of them asked their questions but Leanna finished hers. When she started to think she couldn't stop and she hoped that dive equipment was available. She had been waiting for more under water experiences this may be the shot she gets.

Leo looked a little puzzled by the question" Nothing sate of the art. Its about 30 feet long with a lower deck with a few laptop computers-"

"Sorry," She was impatient and a little rude to Leo as he tried to explain but she hoped her sorry would be enough. I meant to ask is their any duve equipment? It may be neseccary to find some clues under the water.

"That's what you're here for, and yes all the equipent has been put on."

She knew he was reaching an impatient point and after having another cup of coffee she a;;pwed the others to ask their questions. Many of them prompting Leanna to temporairly forget her train of thought. But wehen they all departed from breakfast she ran back to her room and grabbed various dig tools and books. Today was going to long and she needed to be prepared.

Armes showered and dressed quickly, the visitor last night had just been someone coming in for a cup of coffee and they had left soon after. Shortly after 5 she had done a few more things and then gone to bed herself. Her sleep had been mercifully dreamless. But now she needed to eat her breakfast with the others and they'd be leaving.

Armes opened the door to her room just as Ashlyn raised her fist to rap on it. Armes opened the door wider.

"Good morning Ashlyn can I help you with anything?" She smiled at Ashlyn who shook her head.

"Good morning to you as well! I was just coming to see if you were up, Armes." Armes nodded, laughing as she locked her door.

"Sorry you had to go to the trouble of coming up here...but as you see, I'm ready..." she finished locking the door. "So, shall we go?" She spread her arm towards the stairs and they both walked down to the kitchen where all the others were already, all in the middle of discussions.

Armes slid quietly into her chair and helped herself to the food as she watched the others. I see my...errand had an impact... She cleaned her plate quickly and joined in the discussions as they cleared and washed the dishes in readiness for their departure.

Professor Arcaine continued to answer everyone's questions...being a teacher he was used to this kind of thing. Leanna seemed to be more curious and pickier than most...and especially after last night...we wasn't sure what to make of her...but discarded it.

Ashley seemed better from his brief talk with her and he was glad...he enjoyed her being in his classroom, and their friendship was important to him. He would need her when this little quest of there's began.

Leo lifted his backpack onto the kitchen table and pulled out packets of papers for everyone to look at and examine. Each contained their objectives and their individual duties and responsibilities. He took a quick glance at Rowena and chuckled to himself as he shook his head.

As everyone began to shuffle through their papers, Leo closed his eyes and muttered a quick prayer for everyones safety and for those who have dissapeared.

Sitting back down in his seat...he made his way outside to work on the final preperations for the boat before departure.

Emory sat on the bow of the boat, his legs dangling over the edge as he rested his drawing pad against the railing, a half-finished sketch of the sunrise over the lake on the open page and a charcoal pencil in his hand.

Suddenly, he heard the rest of the group as they began to congregate, preparing for the expedition.

They'll call me if they need me. he thought as he resumed his drawing.

Alex had already gathered his things, so straight after breakfast he headed down onto the lawn. Other people were already there, including Rowena, who had left the breakfast table rather quickly, and Professor Arcaine, who was handing out papers to those who were there already. Alex walked up to him and took a pack of papers with his name on them.

"Professor Arcaine, looking at the maps, I think that while we should search the water, we should also search around the edges of the woods surrounding the lake."

"That's good thinking, Alex," said the Professor, "But two things. One, which I think I have said to all the students here: call me Leo. Professor Arcaine makes me sound ancient. Secondly, while the woods are a prime spot for these students to have disappeared, we need to check out the lake primarily. Most of the people who have gone missing have disappeared near the lake. But well done for taking the initiatvie, Alex."

"Thanks, Leo," he said, taking a quick look through his papers and then looking around. He saw Rowena, and strolled over to her.

"Hey, Rowena," he said, "You left the table kinda quickly after I'd got there. Is anything up?"

Rowena fumbled with her papers as Alex approached her, was he becoming a stalker? He seemed to pop up ever where!

"Um...nothings wrong," she tried to catch herself as she looked about the group. "Just...um..." she brought her gaze up and caught Alex's eyes. His vibrant brown irises stared back at her with puzzlement and her mind began to wonder. What would it be like to kiss him?

Rowena's eyes grew wide as her cheeks flushed. She didn't just think that...did she?! She quickly pulled her eyes away from Alex and started looking through her papers again. "Sorry...I," she began as tried to grap the few stray papers that were starting to fall out of her hand. Managing only to group two, the other three floated towards the ground.

Rowena rushed to gather them and found her hand upon Alex's. The soft smooth texture underneith her finger tips slowly pushed against her's and she jerked her hand away. Alex handed her the papers he had gathered as she took them gingerly from his hand.

"Are you sure there's nothing wrong?" he questioned again.

"Yeah, I think." Rowena forced herself to straighten and look at him again. "Guess I'm just tired." She smiled at him and turned to face the others in the group.

What in the world has gotten into me? I've never been like this around any one? Could it be the lake that is doing this? Like it swallowed up the missing people? I don't know, but I need to control myself.

Roger smiled as he put his leather bush hat on, people all thought it was strange, but he loved it, very usefull. He tossed his bag over his shoulder, strapped his knife into its sheath and buckled it to his belt, slipped a pair of leather gloves under his belt and grabbed a few roles of climbing cord.

Tossing the roles over his shoulder he started down to the boat, the rest of his things were down to the dock already, simple stuff. He set the rope down next to some hatchets and a few camping supplies in an army duffle bag. No matter what people told him, if he was going to get lost in the woods of Camelot, he was going to be prepared.

Roger stretched and then started grabbing straps and handles and cords, and lifted all the gear up and, stepping over the edge of the boat, set it down again. Pushing it all out of the way he found a seat in some shade and waited for the students to get on board.

Ashlyn walked with Armes down toward the boat. She updated her on the events of the morning. Strangely, she merely nodded at Alex?s unexplained note. Must be she too believed it to be a prank.

Ashlyn looked up to see all had gathered except for Kei

?I?m going ta walk down the shore and look for Kei, she wasn?t in her room.? A breeze rippled over the water and caught everyone?s attention. The air felt foreboding. The party held looks on their faces that plainly wondered if Kei had been taken ?Look, she canna be too far off.? The others nodded and she started to walk off.

?Wait! You can?t go by yourself, I?ll come too.? Rowena hurried to walk next to her.

They walked in silence for a while ?I don?t like this.?

?What?? Ashlyn looked at her

?Just a feeling. Even Alex has been a bit on edge, like he?s afraid of the water, and he?s not afraid of anything.?

?I wish I knew where Kei was.?

Rowena nodded

?God this fog is dense??

-------
Back by the shore the others waited for their return in nervous silences. Only Armes seemed calm, leaning against a rock and almost smiling to herself. Alex paced and ran a hand through his hair.

?What?s wrong Alex?? Armes asked smoothly

--------
?I can?t see where we?re going?

?Hello??

?Kei!?

They ran up and found Kei standing in the field.

?I came out early to check some figures and I got lost in the fog trying to find my way back to the boat?

?Let me check the compass?? Rowena fished in her bag

?Wait?? Kei looked up sharply as if she were trying to read the fog in front of her. ?Something, is coming this way? fast.?

Ashlyn gave her a questioning look. What was she talking about? She strained her ears and held her breath. Nothing. Then she heard it. Horse hooves, coming down fast. She peered through the fog as it parted and her heart leapt up to her throat.

Two horses tilted down across the plain toward them. They were dressed in medieval armor and their swords were drawn, pointed directly at them?

(OOC: Reiku and DC, these knights won?t talk to you, but you can try. Everyone else interact with eachother, let the three of us have a chance to deal with the attack before anyone trys to find us. Good post so far guys)

Kei stared at the knights' swords that had been drawn upon seeing the three women. Rowena, Ashlyn and Kei looked at each other then at the knights' gleaming swords.

" What is happening here?" Rowena asked.
Indeed. What IS happening here? Keilantra wondered. She looked at the knights' clothing. Exactly like the way they were depicted in the texts that Kei had been studying the most part of her academic life.

She tried to move to the side. The knight masterfully made his horse jump to the same side Kei moved to. The soft ringing of the sword was unnerving. It meant that this wasn't an illusion.

" Excuse me," Kei started, " why have you drawn your sword at us?"
The knight didn't answer. His head was covered by a helmet so it was impossible to read his facial expression. The other knight that held Rowena and Ashlyn hostage said something in an unknown language to his companion. Kei's knight nodded and pressed forward and asked Kei something in that language. She could tell it was a question because of the tone of voice he asked in.

" I'm sorry, I don't understand what you are saying," Kei replied, trying to get that message through to him.

The knight's horse reared and snorted at Kei. The knight managed to corner Kei against a tree, the sword's tip barely an inch away from her throat.

" Kei, they might think we're witches!" Ashlyn said loudly and suddenly.
" How did you come to that conclusion?" Kei yelled over to her.
" Could have we..." Rowena trailed off. Ashlyn nodded at her.
" Could have we what?" Kei asked them, looking for a way to escape.

Before Ashlyn could answer, the knight lunged at her. Kei panicked and tried to duck. She felt the sword slice at her cheek, digging in a little. The horse screamed as the knight's sword shattered into a thousand glittering pieces. It suddenly felt cold in the fog as Kei looked up at the knight, a hand pressed against her cheek so it wouldn't bleed as much.

All that remained of the knight's sword was the handle. The blade part had been frozen, frozen so coldly that it became as brittle as a thin layer of ice. Kei could feel the knight look at her with terror. What had just happened? She looked over to Ashlyn and Rowena. Astonished looks were upon their faces.

" What... what just happened?" Kei asked.
" You.... you...." Ashlyn started.
" You just froze that knight's sword and made it shatter," Rowena replied.
Kei looked at them in disbelief. " You can't be serious."
" We're deadly serious," Ashlyn said firmly.

Kei looked at the knight as he started to back away. They needed to get out of this situation and fast...

Ashlyn drew a gun from under her jacket and Rowena jumped at the sight of it. It wasn?t normal to carry one, but Ashlyn had been raised in a different world then most.

She took cool aim at on of the knights and fired. The horse spooked at the sound so close, but the bullet entered the knights chest then healed over immediately just as if she had shot the fog itself.

?Your crossbow Ashlyn, try that!? Rowena said hurriedly as the knight turned back toward them again. Ashlyn quickly holstered her gun and reached for the bow across her back, but it was strapped too tight for her to get off herself.

?Rowena, grab the bow and take a shot... make it count??

Rowena scrambled behind Ashlyn as she tried to remove the cross-bow from Ashlyn's back. The knight was coming closer, faster. Finally the strap broke free as she pulled an arrow from Ashlyn's pack. Quickly she slid the arrow into place and cocked it.

Let my aim be true.

Rowena aimed the cross bow for the knights chest and pulled the trigger. The arrow wizzed from before her and darted straight for the knight. It was quick, sudden. The arrow shot right through his armor and into his chest. The sharp clang was the only thing that was able to allow the others to know it actually hit its mark.

The other knights brought their attention to the commrade. His mighty horse continued to plunge forward as his rider fell from his back with a thud onto the ground. The animal did not stop as he trotted past Ashlyn and Rowena.

"You think he's dead?" Rowena looked at Ashlyn.

"I don't know."

Ashlyn bent to feel his pulse. As she neared the knight he faded into the mist. The knight that remained held his horse at bay and stared at them. Ashlyn stood and faced him, taking the crossbow graciously from Rowena who stood looking firmly at the spot the knight she shot once lay.
This was weird, really, seriously, weird. She hadn?t used that word since her high school days, but it was the only word that fit this. Ashlyn leveled the crossbow at the knight.

?Who are you? Why 'ave you come 'ere??

The knight didn?t reply, he simply stared her down through his silver helm. Off in the distance, Ashlyn heard voices. Some from their group were on their way to the ?rescue?...
