Dagger
Let's talk about what scares you in anime. It can be really specific (e.g. "that scene from Sailor Senshi XXX when the tentacle monster slithers up out of the black lagoon") or simply a general theme, style of music, camera angle or whatever. Or if you can think of an anime with a Halloween episode (are there any?), feel free to bring it up as well. Just try to explain your choices--it makes the discussion more interesting for everyone. Thanks! As for me, what really pops to mind are a couple of moments from Paranoia Agent. It's been a little while since I watched the show, so I can't give too many details, but I recall feeling distinctly twitchy during "MHz" (episode 7), in which
Maniwa starts to teeter on the brink of both insanity and enlightenment.
The creepy, grating sound effects add a lot to the episode's overall atmosphere, especially when they start building up into a frenzy toward the very end. It was episode 3 that really made me jump, though. In showing Harumi's predicament, the director did a fantastic job of creating a sense of unease. What got me appeared after she really
loses it, when she staggers out onto the street.
Right then you're abruptly shown her face,
grinning crazily and completely caked with clown-like make-up.
It sounds cliche, but it works beautifully in the context of her situation. Very eerie. ~Dagger~
Delta
Perhaps it's because I'm easily spooked or the creators are just really good but there's always something in every episode of Ghosts at School/Gakkou no Kaidan that scares me. Be it a moving shadow at the end of a corridor or the first appearance of a vengeful spirit, the series staff did a good job of setting the atmosphere up for a most excellent scare. Halloween episodes, huh? I can only remember the one from You're Under Arrest/Taiho Shichauzo where the girls were doing overtime at the police station and did nothing but scare each other with ghost stories. The stories weren't really scary, well, they could have been but the narratives' characters look suspiciously like the police officers. Suffice to say that the episode was hilarious and was exactly the way I imagined a YUA Halloween special would be.
Twilight_Kioku
well, i dunno about scaring as much as the 'oh no i cant belive they just did that, thats so wrong' factor. Elfen Lied comes into mind
with the puppy and its untimely death
. after thinking about it for a bit, a scene in R.O.D. the TV that genuinely freaked me out(fuzzy due to time) was when they were in the mountains, and
mr. papermaster popped that claw thingy out of his coat and stabbed the woman who went for a swim
(still thinking...) oh, the truth about Reki in Haibane Renmei kinda scared me too. still does. i wont say anything furthing, seen as how its a major spoiler :p
Veritas
Hmm, this one is a toughie. I don't think I have ever really been scared by an Anime. It takes a lot to scare me, so more often I just find stuff disturbing like, "wtf?" or I laugh about it. Anyways though In honor of Hallow's Eve I will put somethings up. First off the End of Eva, the scene where
Asuka is fighting all the dummy plug Evas and she gets massacred by thier imitations of the Lance of Longinus. That one lance that splits her arm as she is reaching up at the Eva's make me shudder. Then the Eva's procede to eat/tear/rip apart the rest of Unit 2
I dunno that scene just creeps me out. Then there is the last episode or Episodes of Beserk, so many things mess with me that I'm not even going to try and list any of them. It pissed me off very badly, and I felt like breaking stuff. But ya if you've seen the last disk of the series you know what I'm talking about.
Ben Holiday
I remember watching Akira in the late eighties and the scene were Tetsuo was pushing his insides back in freaked me out. Up to this point this was the first animated feature I had seen that hadn't been edited for tv.
Killer7
Their have been a few I can remember. One in Elfen Lied (as someone already said) when the puppy died. Also when #35 was first unleashed
and the scientists organs were literally torn out, with her ribs and all.
Also, even though this isn't in anime, the first time I saw the music video Obscure by Dir en Grey.
