i like Yoshitoshi ABe's artwork in Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei. (currently wanting to see some of his other shows, but out of a job and money!) not necessarily the actual shows animation, but the concept art in the dvd cases and such. its some of the best watercolor(oil?) that i have seen that isnt landscapes

others that i also like...FLCL as said. hmm*funny thoughts* Fruits basket. i find the random use of stick figures freakin halarious, and they fit in the show. if u were to put them in, oh, Elfen Lied, they would make no sense.

and if this was including manga, i would say DNAngel. dont know what it is about those books, but they inspire me to do something. what? i dont know.

Yes, Doomberg please don't double post
please just edit your old post.

Anyway the anime with the best artwork....
I would have to say Fruits Basket. I'm not
really sure why I say that, I guess the art
just catches me.

For manga (if we'er also doing manga) I
would have to say Saiyuki. I really like the
character designs and the toneing in the Manga.

Steamboy's animation is amazing. You can easily tell that it took over a decade to make it. Ghost in the Shell (all forms of it, but particularly Innocence) is almost as good in terms of animation, but I prefer the more old-skool style of Steamboy over the Matrix-y stuff in GitS.

In terms of character design, Shinichiro Wantanabe's stuff (Bebop, Champloo) takes the cake. His characters don't really look like the stereotypical anime style, but they're different from everything else being made in America and aren't too realistic. It's the mix of styles that makes his shows good-looking.

I don't even need to explain why I consider Studio Ghibli to be the best animation studio around except for maybe Pixar depending on how Cars turns out. Honerable mentions for TV series go to Gankotsou, Otogi Zoshi, BONES stuff in general, and if we're counting co-productions between American and Japanese studios, the upcoming IGPX looks very good as well.

Out of the ones that I've seen, Last Exile. But that was about a year ago, in the States, so there's probably shows with better animation out by now.

Animation was never all that important to me... I only notice it when its either really choppy (usually with old titles like Ranma 1/2 and the first seasons of Sailor Moon), inconsistant (like with the original Evangelion DVDs), or when it has a unique style (Samurai Champloo, Super Milk Chan).

Animatrix's The Program. Mmm hmm. I've watched and rewatched it for a zillion times but it never fails to amaze me everytime. The animation was veeerry smooth (just watch the scene where the camera pans around the characters) and the outlines, though bold, are simply elegant. The way it used black and solid colors for contrast made every scene picture(or in this case, screenshot)-perfect. Kinda reminded me of moving ukiyo-e, it did.

Well I know that I can easily say that Air is a highly well drawn. Its excelent in the intro itself just seeing how much attention they paied to the the hair alone shows how well drawn it is. FLCL Is also well drawn. Even though it was an extremely short episode I still loved every drawing aspect of it. Everything looks just so real...I love it...

I don't know any company names so please bare with me ^_^.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC - Then again, I probably like everything about this anime. But the artwork was very good. Haven't seen an episode where the art was rushed. (Although I've only seen the 1st season)

Cowboy Bebop / Samurai Champloo - I liked the fast paced animation in these 2 shows. The artwork was nice as well.

Hellsing - Although I wasn't too fond of Alucards suit. The red trench and hat was nice although they could've put him in a better suit. Probably could've shrunk his nose a bit too. Other than those little peeves, the artwork was nice as well.

RahXephon - I just started watching this show about a week ago. But I am impressed with the artwork as well.

One show that has made an improvement IMO is Yu Yu Hakusho. I didn't really care for the artwork or animation when it 1st started out.

I think Ghost in the Shell was pretty good. I am a comp science major wanting a master's in comp graphics. So I really like the intros to StandAlone Complex. It was cool.

Yeah, flcl art is great, but I'm leaning more toward Samurai Deeper Kyo. The action is really well articulated, and the facial expressions they give Kyo are waaaay too sexy.

:p

Then again, I'm nuts over Kyo, so that means I'm biased...

Hmmm this is a toughy, I like so much stuff, and I'm indecisive to boot. Anywho, right now I really like the art work for Gankutsuou, though not really because I think it is the best. I like it on a more artistic level because I think it is cool how it puts a necessary emphasis on style, the outlandish clothing of the noble classes and overall material things. It draws the veiwer back to the books highly aestetical and material time period in my opinion. I like it alot because most of the time when I think of the future I personally think of everything being symmetrical, uniform and pratical.

Continuing with Gonzo productions, I really also like Last Exile, as well as Full Metal Panic. Last Exile I think has an overall well rounded presentation. I really like how detailed and deep the eyes seem to be, they seem to express alot of emotion which I find very realistic. The Vanships and Airships where done very well, each one being very diverse from each other. In FMP I really think the characters stand out alot, they seem to have alot of depth and very rich colors. I haven't seen but a couple episodes of the original as well as FUMOFFU, so I'll leave it at that.

I'd also like to mention Full Metal Alchemist. After watching last night's episode
(Ed's fight with Greed)
the animation has a fluidity which is breath taking, in matter of fact it reminds me of Mugen fighting O_o.
