Anime Conventions: Let's hear it!

Well let's see, I didn't see a good thread for this and it is anime related so I thought I'd post it. If I am in the wrong then of course strike this thread down.

Next weekend I shall be attending Youmacon, a convention here in Michigan (a con? in Michigan? I know, amazing). This will be my first con and I'm excited and nervous. I only vaguely know what to expect, I've heard tales of dealer rooms and crazy skits and random glomps but honestly it's all vague. We'll be staying for all three days so this is pretty much a 'being thrown in headfirst' sort of thing.

So what does everyone have to say about cons? Is there anything you must warn me about? A story to tell me? I'd like to enjoy my first con as much as possible but I feel a bit clueless. So anything you guys have to say would be most welcome.

On a side note, Youmacon seems pretty impressive for a first year con. I'm really excited about this ^^

I went to my first con this summer!

Cons are very fun! I saw many cosplayers, and saw lots of anime in the screening rooms. I suggest that if you read manga, buy it at the con because it's cheaper, and no tax.

I got to talk to alot of random people. I'm warning you that many people are very outgoing and hyper. I saw someone get a random glomp (it was so funny!) I guess they really liked the person's costume. Also, you should bring a camera if you want to take pictures of cosplayers. And you should bring food (if you remember to eat), because your most likely going to blow all your money on merchandise. I know I did. :animeswea

Ah, I have no crazy con stories I can tell you about! The only thing that stayed in my mind was a cosplayer that portrayed a perfect Sesshomaru, an eight year old doing a booty shake in a skit (that was very disturbing), my brother's friend laughing and wispering to my brother 'Kira!' loudly (in a quiet theatre too) because of a person in some anime called 'Fafner' looking like him, a pimpin Miroku, Ayame from 'Fruits Basket' with a little Yuki-mouse toy, a giant Chewie (really tall and looked intimidating), fan girls and boys yelling 'Yaoi-ie!' and I think the thing that stayed in my mind the most (I still laugh when I remember it) is a shirt that said "Will Yuri for Yaoi." :haha:

I hope you have fun at your first con! I know I did!

Well I recently went to Otakon over the summer, and the only thing I can tell you is to expect alot of signs and people screaming stuff about Yaoi. At Otakon it is really crazy, and if you want to see something in a theater, go early so you can actually read the subs (standing up for an hour and a half is not fun) Also, plan to blow $100 in 5 minutes. Personally I will probably go to at least 2 cons in 2006, maybe three.

I've been to a few. Mostly Otakon and Anime Boston.
Last year at anime Boston, I met my first voice actor. I was in line for two hours to meet Scott McNeil. I befreinded the two girls I was in line with, adn I finaly got a glimpse of him. "That's Scott McNeil?" I said. He was wearing a cowboy hat, boots, dungerees, glasses, and a plaid shirt with the sleeves torn off. "He looks like something out of a Bon Jovi video." I finished.
My new freinds went first. One was dressed as Duo, and Scott was pretty happy to see that. They got their photo with him, and I leaned in the backround. He noticed me, and says "No mischief back there young man. I'll turn this line up right around!" :)
Next it was my turn. We talked a little about about his voice work, mostly Piccolo and Wolverine. I said that Wolverine never did anything, all he did on the show was stand around and look menacing. "I had a good fight with Sabertooth." he replied. "That wasn't a fight. That was a hissy fit." I said. He kind of agreed with me. "Yeah, every other episode was (Wolverine voice) Hey, it's another mutant kid. Come with me."
Scott signed my nametag, and he did a recording as Duo for a friend of mine back home.
I met with him again at Otakon, and he remembered me. "Hey, I know you! From Boston, right?" He's a cool guy.
I have lots of stories to tell. But I'll save some of them for later.

"KAMEHAMEHA!"

Heh, I love Anime Cons like you wouldn't believe. I go to AMA and I have only been two years, but no matter. I am attending Nekocon in 2006 and I am most deffinately going to AMA this summer. >^.^<

Cons are most enjoyable. You get to spend money, dress up, meet new people, and hopefully go to a RAVE. Those are my favorite things. So enjoy your con, nothing really to be warned about 'cept you might see lots of skin. Heh, depends on who the cosplayers will be playing. :catgirl:

Cons! I love to cosplay, and anime cons are the best opportunity to do so. I've been to Numa Rei No Con in New Orleans, which is the biggest free anime convention in the nation. And, yes, I think it will be coming back next year. You see, where it is held is actually on the West Bank of the city, which didn't get any water.

But anyway, I'll be going to Anime South in Destin, FL the weekend before Thanksgiving. It should be pretty fun, and I won't have to pay for a hotel since I know people there. I'll be cosplaying Kagome, and I just need a few more things to finish it off.

I'm also going to Ushicon in Houston the last weekend of January. I'm going with some friends in my university's anime club. I'm not sure what character I'll cosplay as, but I have my winter holiday breaks to figure that out.

I'm usually disappointed at how small the Hentai booths are at cons. In fact, many cons lack them entirely! Look, Hentai is amazing! Why exclude it? Where else do you get to see that kind of action? Animated girls can do stuff that actual women could never, ever do! But anyway, I think cons should include more extensive (and perhaps interactive) Hentai sections.

Busy places you can get lost and some dealers can scam you on somethings. Try to have fun and always remember if you do cosplaying you will glomped like crazy so beware of Fangirls and fanboys! Try to have fun and remember the dances are great. And if they have a raving dance buy your flow stick early. They run out fast.
