My first real project in Illustrator. The color's diluted a bit in this one as a result of moving it between programs. I also ended up having to screencap it, which explains the marching ant border lol.

As you can see, I didn't really take too much time on the background because I was already getting behind from all the time I took on the butterfly. Somehow, getting that shadow to fall only on the topmost leaf ended up being a total b****. If I ever see a butterfly like that in real life, I'm stepping on it.

This was a small, fun project. We had to make a face (and a corresponding environment) using only text characters. I kinda gave up on those motorcycles, lol.

Hey! That's really good! I thought that was a real butterfly sitting there! I am hoping to get a degree in Computer Graphics! I hope I start off as good as you are now! :catgirl:

Yeah, the butterfly looks real awesome, maybe if you have a bit more time someday you might like to go back and render the background as well since the butterfly, good as it is, sticks out against the plain leafs in the background. It does look real from the thumbnail too.

I'm not sure if it is intended, but you got two of the butterfly's white dot's jutting over the black outline, I think it would look much nicer if they were cut off at the beggining of the wing outlines.

All in all, good job, good job.

Wow, I can't believe that's your -first- project on illustrator, even if you include the adjective "real". xP

Out of curiosity, what did you use to make the edges of the background blur?
The butterfly is nice, but I like the leaves too, even if it's simple.

I took a long time on it, so I'm a little behind). I'm working on getting Illustrator on my laptop, but I think I screwed something up when the techs at my school put it on there. :X

I feathered the leaves in the immediate background and used a gaussian blur on the leaf/flower blobs in the background.

Thanks for the compliments!

I also thought, from the thumbnail, that the butterfly was a photograph. I think it loses something in the large version, maybe due to the quality of the lines on the wings, but I'm guessing that's a jpeg issue. I'm also wondering if the white spots should be moved under the lines.

I don't have much to say about the second piece, except that it looks like fun, and you did a brilliant job with the guy's hair and glasses. Actually, everything looks great. I'm just especially taken with the simplicity of the top of his head, heh.

Making something a JPG does not give it jaggy lines... I'm not really sure how that idea started here or why it continues to persist. If he made this a GIF or a PNG it would look exactly the same (although with some diffusion or whatever, obviously). It depends on what he did in the program and, really, some curves are never going to be completely smooth if they're of a certain size where the pixels are viewable. The only thing, in this case, that compression as a JPG has done is the addition of small artifacts around color changes. You can see some around the black lines where it meets the green, but it doesn't really affect the black lines themselves.

Personally, I like both of them. I think the butterfly would be a bit more successful if as much attention was given the leaves behind him, but I figure that was a conscious decision to give it more focus.

The second one is just cool. I like how all the shapes come together.

As circumstances have deemed, I apparently do have Illustrator on my computer, lol. So I may get that file and spiff it up at home sometime if I feel like it.

EDIT: I fixed the dots and got a better picture of it. The colors are still washy, though.=/

And yeah, I'm too lazy to spruce up the background. I think I've pretty much had my fill of this piece, so I'll go with Tony's guess that I left it simple to bring attention to the butterfly, heh.

Constructive criticism is a must in this forum especially.

As a frequent user of illustrator I must say I'm quite impressed with the results of your butterfly. In fact, it got me a little bit scared. I've always considered myself to be such a damn good illustrator but I can't say I've turned anything out that's quite the quality of that butterfly (unless I use a picture as reference). It sounds like your Illustrator lessons were far more comprehensive than mine ever were (I'm mostly self-taught).

An animal project I finally finished. As with the butterfly, the background is more there just to kind of fill up the space than to actually be a major part of the picture. This one was my first encounter with realistic shading, so it was interesting lol.

I'm really impresssed with the puffin John. That is some really good work. The feet, for one, are excellently done. I do think there are a couple of things to mention here though: the left hand side of his breast [calm yourself :p] looks a bit awkward. I'm guessing that was an attempt to portray a wing, it just doesn't really look that much like a wing. The second thing to mention is that whilst foreground detail on the rocks is sufficient, the water does need some more details. Just one or two whitecaps would significantly improve it. I like how you had the whitecap near where it met the rocks behind the puffin as well ^_^

I am really impressed.

I tried for forevarz to get the whitecaps to look right, but I just couldn't do it, heh. If anyone wants to try, have a go at it. :P

And the left side you were talking about (very clever and dignified animal boob joke, by the way. Least everyone knows what you're into now. >;P) was based off this photo, which I based most of the bird off.

EDIT: The word "this" in the last sentence is a link, in case that was confusing. I forgot it myself when I saw my post, lol.

I really like the butterfly picture. I like how you made the background blurred. You've really given this image dimension.

I suggest adding veins to the leaves. They seem a bit plane, but other than that, the whole image is great!

Keep up the good work.

*carefully brushes off the thread* I'm authorized for this. ¬¬

This is something I finished somewhat recently for class. We had to take the theme "art leads to innovation", and basically run with it.

As you can see, there is absolutely nothing flashy about it, lol; I didn't even use so much as a gradient. I'm somewhat satisfied with the outcome, though. I like how the colors turned out (well, I always have to assume they're ok, since whenever I send it to my laptop it looks awful), but I could never quite nail the "painted-ness" on the part of the robot inside the frame. I had thought about submitting the robot and easel part of it as a shirt on threadless, but I didn't end up liking it quite enough for that. Kevin said he would probably wear it if it got printed, though, so if you think you can convince me otherwise, go for it. :p
