wayofthreversed
I thought that I would start this thread about Hayao Miyazaki. I do not know if this is the correct spot to post this thread so if it is not then I am sorry about that. But I just wanted to Know if anybody else thinks that his films are incredible and what their favorite film of his is if any. Some of his films are (in no particular order) Spirited Away, Castle in the sky, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving castle, Porco rosso, Kiki?s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, and Future Boy Conan. Those are just some of them there are a lot more but I don't know them all. And now to answer my question my favorite film by Hayao Miyazaki would have to be Princess Mononoke I just love the story about Ashitaka and San falling in love and Ashitaka trying to make balance between the forest and the humans. The characters are all great, so is the animation and the music is wonderful. Well that is what I think now what do all of you think?

Veritas
Wow, I just got alot more respect for TCM. Anyways I really like Miyazaki's work. I was reading an interview with him and I found it hard to believe that he is pessimistic. Because all of his movies seem to turn out right in the end. I have seen Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky. I really do love all of them to be honest, though my favorite would have to be Princess Mononoke, because I love how valliant and determined Ashitaka is, as well as how crazy it is when his arm freaks out. The characters in it are very realiztic as well in their personalities. But I am going to be all over Turner Classic Movie channel, because I haven't seen most of what they are showing.
Guest Blood Shadow
I love all of Miyazaki's works that I've seen. I've seen KiKi's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa; Valley of the Wind, own Spirited Away, and I've seen little snippits of Princess Mononoke :animeswea My favorite is definately Nausicaa. I just loved the music and the eccentric plot. Very beautiful scenary detail as well, truely the best I've ever seen. Is it just me, or are Miyazaki's movies like nothing else out there? I'm a fan, but I think most people are. My favorite movie is My Neighbor Totoro, and I don't think I can really explain why. It's a priceless piece of my childhood. :) I've also seen Kiki's Delivery Service, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and If You Listen Closely/Whisper of the Heart. I believe Miyazaki directed snippets of If You Listen Closely/Whisper of the Heart. (I'm pretty sure the flying/floating bit at the end was his.) I believe he also wrote the screenplay.
Guest chobitslover90
i have seen spirited away and princess mononoke which are the two best movies period that i have ever seen i think hayo miyazaki should make his own series of anime instead of only movies
2010DigitalBoy
Hmm... well, I've only seen two of his movies, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, but both of them were great. I loved Mononoke just because it was so mystical. It featured all kinds of strange and unworldly creatures and it was surprisingly bloody (not that I crave blood in anime, it was just kinda cool) I loved Spirited Away as well. The story was great and I love the charachters, though the whole thing with Haku
being a river
was weird. Once again, the blood was nice (god, now I sound like a gore freak.)
Guest chobitslover90
your not a freak i liked the blood as well but just beacause it was well animated Chobitslover, you've got to work on your post quality. Sojio
Ahhh Miyazaki san. Easily the greatest Animator of our time. He is the one who got me hooked on anime starting with LAPUTA: Castle In The Sky i am now a proud owner of Nausicaa of the Valley Of The Wind, Laputa:Castle In The Sky, Kiki's Delivary Service, Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle Ltd Edition. It good to see so many people liking Miyazaki its this type of recognition he needs. One of the Reasons i like Miyazaki San is because like him i have an obsession with flying contraptions. This hobbie of Miyazaki san's is the reason for the Studio in which he works bieng called Ghibli Ghibli means a hot desert wind of northern Africa
Touchstone
Yeah, he's also the one who first got me interested in anime when I saw his beautifully crafted stories on the big screen. The first was Spirited Away, which I saw in a small theater in England. The speakers were basically from a stereo it looked like and the chairs were hard and plastic, but it was worth it;). When that story got going it really did sweep you away with it's flights of fantasy and incredible characters. That movie still holds a special place in my heart. I also really love Porco Rosso (I saw it on TCM this past January in Japanese). The life of those pilots was so wonderful and you got caught up in the adventure, and the ending where Porco fights the American is just so hilarious! It also has one of my favorite scenes; the story he told of his first experience in war. It's so sad and beautifully animated. As said, Princess Mononoke is just incredible. There are so many layers in his movies, and I think this one has the most. There is no absolute side of good or evil, and Ashitaka is really left to forge his own side, which I found really compelling. I've heard it said that Miyazaki always threatens to retire after each movie he makes-I hope he doesn't any time soon!
Starwind
I'll have to go along and say that Princess Mononoke is my Favorite Miyazaki movie. For some reason it just grabs me and I get so involved in it no matter how many times I watch it. That's not to say that I haven't enjoyed pretty much every movie I've ever seen of his. I only recently saw Porco Rosso on TMC this January and that too was a pretty great story. But with me, like many others, my first Miyazaki movie was Spirited Away. This was one of my first anime movies to boot. I had seen a few different series up to this point, but this was the first full length motion picture anime. The artwork alone was mezmorizing and the story was beautifully done. All his films seem to be on a constant roller coaster, shifting from the more adventurous to the more light hearted. For me it's always an emotional roller coaster whenever I see one of his movies.
DBZgirl88
I'm a big Miyazaki fan. I think all of his movies are brilliant. My favorites are Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and My neighbor Totoro, oh and Kiki's Delivery Service. Heh, heh, I guess that's half of them, but it is hard to choose between so many great films! Anyway, there is one thing that dissapoints me about Miyazaki's films. I am sorry to say that I think the japanese voices absolutely, indefinitely, just plain suck! I normally like the japanese subtitled version of animes versus dubbed animes, but I think the english dubs of Miyazaki's films are much, much better. They are much more expressive, but not in that childish corny way in regular anime dubs. One character in particular that bothered me alot in the japanese version was Chihiro in Spirited. She had such a weak, expressionless voice. I like it alot better in english. In the japanese version of Miyazaki's films, the voices are never loud enough, and people never scream or yell loud enough. There are times when the charcater is completely silent even though he or she should be groaning in pain, or struggling, or giggling, or making some sort of noise. For instance, in Princess Mononoke, when
Ashitaka was struggling to free San from Okoto, he made no sound while he was struggling and fighting with the demon's tentacles (in the japanese version that is). But in the english version he did, he groaned and struggled, and that added emotion to the scene and I liked it better. When Lady Eboshi had her arm chomped off by the Moro's head, she didn't even scream in the Japanese version. What the hell is up with that?
In addtion to boring expressionless voices, they choose completely inappropriate voices for certain characters. Moro is a female wolf. Not male, female. Why on earth does she have a male voice in the japanese version? Why does Kiki's cat have a child's voice when
he ends up having a kid of his own
? Well, actually that's probably common in alot of animes with talking animals, but I still find it weird. But I do like the cat's voice alot better in the english version.
shippolover321
I would have to say his anime movies are the best EVER!!!!! :catgirl: My favorite is Spirted Away but I have never seen Howls Moving Castel yet. Ai.sAkUrA.chan
Miyazaki is so awesome. i think the first movie i had ever seen from his creations was probably Kiki's Delivery Service, which i thought was just sooo interesting!! Hmm, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle are my favorites for right now, not sure really. What i think i really love about his movies is that they're all so different. The imagination it holds take you to a whole different level, whether u have an imagination, or not, you really begin to wonder what that man was thinking about when he created these movies. I know i always think about that, haha, maybe it's just me, i dunno. Pat on the back for Hayao Miyazaki.
Guest Arellasan
There's not much I can add to this thread about Hayao Miyazaki, except to add my admiration for his work to the list. He hooked me with Spirited Away. I seen Princess Mononoke, Kiki?s Delivery Service, and My Neighbor Totoro since. His unique preception of things can take me by surprise. I've recently purchased a copy of Howl's Moving Castle, which I'm waiting for the right time to watch. His works can be so breathtakingly beautiful, that I like to watch them when there is the least amount of possible interruption, and I like time to think about what I've just viewed before getting back to the real world. But you have to remember that we as westerners are used to emotional voices where as in Japan these voices which we hear as sounding wierd are most likely the common voices used in all styles of Animation. But yes it is like many other animes which have annoying voices. That bieng said though i was dissapointed with the american dubbing of Peacemaker. But thats off topic. :animeknow
Sojio, I removed most of the text in the quote. Quoting the entire post really isn't necessary. QuincyArcher
call me a softy, but my favorite Miyazaki flick is My Neighbor Totoro. Although i only saw that one in it's original japanese (unsubbed) so i probably didnt catch everything, but there are just some things that go beyond language. I've also seen Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, all of them were stellar movies as well. Still trying to find a chance to watch Howl's Moving Castle. PWNED
Ah Hayao Miyazaki, What would I and the legions of Anime fans do without you? A hell of a lot more than usual but I'll keep that to myself. That said, Princess Mononoke was probably my first ever Full length Anime and also my favourite as well as the multitude of excellent ones he has produced. To tell you the truth, I only need to see one or two more Miyazaki flick and I'll have seen them all (It's like Pokemon) Now Chabochu; You are quite correct in saying that the original Japanese versions of his movies don't sound as epic and ..... well..... good as they do when they get the excellent dubbing that they get. I myself blame this on the fact that; Their doesn't seem to be as much emotion to someone when they are listening to something unless they speak the language fluently. I don't speak Japanese so I can't feel the emotion as much as someone who speaks it fluently. Simple as that
recca hanabishi
miyazaki is a genius when it comes to anime. all of his movies have smooth story lines that are easy to follow, incredibly lovable character and are just great all around. i like no-face from spirited away. :catgirl:
ceath
i love Miyazaki, i don't really have one favourite film but i's have to say that The Castle of Cagliostro, My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and Howls Moving castle are all my favourite. But i love the way that unlike most these days he hasn't given up on traditional animation. also most of his stories seem to have some underlining point against society, whether it be war, pollution or other.
