all these fun things that happen when writing.

you know, when you write, things rarely go truely as they were planned. Characters start stuff on their own, they omit to tell you important facts about their own backgrounds, some characters just pop in and say "write me!", while others just vanishes without any good reason.

Sometimes they kidnapp the plot, tie it in a dark closet, swallow the key and just run the story themselves.

I've been pretty lucky on this front, but then, that's probably because I think way too much before I write. So far my only problem is that two characters that are eventually supposed to end up together cannot interact without him getting yelled at, threatened, insulted or punched.

Somehow a pervert also slipped in the story and might just cause the ratings to skyrocket >.<

And the funny one: a character that is still in creative limbo wants out 'cause my muses are creeping him out.

And you? Have you ever had similar problems with your stories?

I don't know if it's necessarily fun... When I'm trying to get something going, my imagination runs wild and I try to combine too much at once. So for me it's more irritating when I'm trying to get something done, but if I'm just jotting w/e comes to mind, then yeah you could say it's fun.

My problem usually is that I write what I wanted then I get writer's block. I haven't been able to add anything to my latest fanfic in 4 months!!It doesn't really matter because I don't share them but it still irritates me. When I write sex in-I first make it graphic and then I think "What if somebody stumbles across the disk?" so I usually either take the graphic out totally or make it extremely vague.

Sometimes my characters do what ever they will and surprise everyone, myself included. I find that I don't know them very well yet, but they want me to know them, and will let me know in some sort of way.

They seem to be people already, just waiting somewhere in limbo for a proper sculpter to see them and release them from their marble shell. Once released, they take on lives of their own, and they almost beg me to record these events.

Thus, I have stories. Actually, what I have is mostly parts of stories because I've found that I'm not the right sculpter to make these characters whole. But sometimes...sometimes there is just that little chink in the stone, and I exploit it.

Suddenly this sculpter with words goes on a flurry, and by the end of it the character has been released. It's a little scary, because I can almost see them smile and whisper their thanks to me.

When I read a piece of writing or someone requests that I do some sort of writing, my brain suddenly erases all thought exccept 'write' and then next thing I know an hour has passed and 11 pages have been saved onto my computer. Of course, if I don't read and no one tells me to write, then no matter how hard I try to write, I can't.

When I write, it's more like I am the one being tied and gagged in a dark, soundless closet while the characters run everything themselves. Everything gets changed. A certain twist I was planning in the one story...well I think my muse threw it out the window and put something else in the works. :animesigh

I think of a basic idea of where I want the tale to go, then let the characters run with it, dealing with situations in their own way, their own style. Each one of them is different, revealing tiny bits of info at a time, crossing over another's paths, and not without a few brawls in the process. :animeswea

To me, this is what I love about writing. I find that I have characters that I can't really place -- and others that are placed a little too well for comfort. I like the fact that my characters are real people for me, and that I have to ignore some sides of them in order to bring the reader the image of them that I want. Sometimes I think being a writer is a little like having a god complex; we create, we play with them, we destroy. We control our characters.

And then in other ways, characters control us. I remember writing a chapter for a fanfiction not long ago, and when I'd finished, I reread it -- and realised the entire thing was out of control, just because of one character's tendency towards violence when he felt threatened -- a tendency I hadn't even known about until then.

I remember reading things like Harry Potter [most notably] and thinking, "How does she come up with these tie ins?" And then I start to write my own stories, my own novels and I realise it just happens. An idea pops into my head and then starts to grow and grow -- my character now has a sailing background just because I wanted a male character to have the appearance of a pirate [or at least, one of the ones from the romance novels. ]

I find that I can try to plot the ending, but by the time I've gotten to that stage, the characters have grown and what might have worked once ---- just doesn't. No explanation for it. I just know that they wouldn't - couldn't - bear to say those sort of things now.

And for a long time, before I was reminded of something else, this is what kept me writing when I wanted to give up long ago. Of course, now I've remembered what writing is to me. And I'll never give that up again. ^-^

I used to think about things way too much before I started a story... then I'd get to a certain point, and it would end up going nowhere. Now I just have the basic skeleton in my head and let the characters dictate what happens. It's more fun that way. I know where the characters are going, otherwise the story would be too unfocused, but it's always the character that chooses what path to take. :)

For some reason, I have the most fun writing really arrogant characters. Their dialogue and action is just too fun lol. I don't consider myself very arrogant (unless I'm just having a bit of fun), but I like writing for characters who are unlike me. It makes for a neat experience. Also, I have the J.D. Salinger-complex where I insert italics into everything lol. I enjoy playing around with changes in tone within dialogue. If I ever read my stories out loud, I tend to leap completely into character and overact like crazy with that. >_>
