Anyone else on the Boards listen to Death Metal? If so, let us know your favorite bands so we can discuss (If you say Slipknot, I will find and slap you - they're not a flippin' Death Metal band)! Or if you want to know what Death Metal even is (because many people have huge misconceptions about it), ask any questions here! Alright! Death Metal!

I like Death Metal but I don't know any names of the bands. I have XM radio on my computer so I listen to the channel. I guess I don't have a favorite band yet. Sorry. If I like a song-I'll write it down so I'll know next time! :catgirl:

There are some Death Metal bands I like and some I dislike. It's not particularly my favorite genre, since it basically sounds like someone belching into the microphone. As I Lay Dying is a great band... well, their new cd doesn't really appeal to me... but I like them nonetheless.

After AILD, I'm not really sure what is or isn't a Death Metal band. I tend to get told something's Death Metal only to find out it's Metalcore or something. Overall, I like Metalcore better.

Oh, Jake, I got the new Bodom cd, it's awesome.

Death metal's cool, but it's not my thing. I respect the obvious talent of bands like Nile and Cannibal Corpse, but... It's just too br00tal for me, I guess. I'll take Symphonic Power Metal any day of the week over Death Metal.

I'm more into metalcore such as bleeding though, chariot and symphony of peril.

Death metal is okay. There's so many classifications for stuff that, to me, sounds the same. I just call it all metal because I get confused. I like Cannibal Corpse to some extent, and I don't think Cradle of Filth qualifies, but I do like them Yes, yes, I know, alot of metalheads call CoF a bunch of poseurs, but I don't think there's any way that I could care less than I already do about their opinions, because I like what I like, and if they condemn it, boo to them, too. Children of Bodom are pretty good, too.

I hate Hardcore. I don't like the idea of constant bellowing throughout a song. If you make music you need to put a little harmony in it.

Yeah, sure. There is alot of screaming in death metal, but at least they tone it down a little. Actually, alot of the death metal i listen to, it's more growling than it is screaming.

... and i'm still very confused why Cradle of Filth cannot be considered 'death metal'. They have the 'death metal' sound. Come on!

... and yes. Children of Bodom is pretty good. Though i'm not too fond with their new album as I am with their old stuff, but that's just me.

I don't really like most Death Metal, mainly because I can't tell what they're saying. Most songs just sound like a bunch of growling to me. However, I do kind of like Lamb of God, I find their songs are a little easier to understand.

I sure hope you're not taking this as directed at you. I started this post quite a while ago, before you'd even interacted with the other Metal post.

Oh... sorry. My fault. I get hot-headed very easily (as you can probably tell).

I (and many other people) listen to death metal for the actual music more than just the lyrics, but of course if you're the literate or poetic type, sure, I can see were you're coming from.

Whenever I listen to Death Metal, I'm left with the impression that if they just stopped screaming into the mic they could pass it off as decent music. I really like a lot of the instrumentals and I wish they could just take out the screaming and leave it as an Instrumental-only genre...

I just sort of got used to the screaming and growling after a while. I figured I could deal with the vocals seeing as Death Metal offers some of the most complex, technically advanced music available today. Nowadays, I barely pay attention to the vocals, and at times actually enjoy them. It's definately an aquired taste.

The screaming and growling gives the listener a feeling of power. Kinda like when my teacher screams at me at the top of his lungs, but when my teachers yell at me I just laugh.

My favorite Death growls ever are those of Mikael Åkerfeldt's in Opeth, and Peter Tägtgren's in Bloodbath. The reason is this: instead of being cookie-monster vocals that grate on the nerves after a short time like some Death growls, these two gentlemen's growls are passionate, powerful blasts of throat magic. I realise that Opeth is not a straight Death Metal band, but the guy's growls are definately those of Death, and some of the most perfect at that. You have NOT heard Death growls 'till you've heard Mikael. What blows me away is how he can just transition from his hauntingly beautiful clean vocals to that demonically gutteral growl the way he does.

I also think Peter's vocals in Bloodbath (Nightmares Made Flesh was the album upon which he made his debut) severely overshadow those in his flagship band, Hypocrisy. I realise that he's going for totally different styles, but I just think he's so incredibly good at the Bloodbath style! They're deep as hell, passionate, and consistantly brutal. He switches flawlessly from the deep growl to the high screech. It's amazing.

Best.Death.Metal.Vocalist.Ever.

Antti Boman. Never in my life have I heard another man create the vocals this man has made. It is beyond unique I do not know how else to describe this mans vocals I would have to force you to listen to them with utmost attention for you truly understand. For those of you who are wondering as I doubt you know what band this man hails from as it is a more underground Death Metal band, that is legendary now after their splitting up, is Demilich. I recommend everything they have ever released as they are just wonderful amazing Death Metal.

Second place goes to David Vincent of Morbid Angel his vocals are incredibly smooth yet mind blowingly harsh.

There are plenty of amazing Death Metal vocalists out there but those are my top two.

As far as actual Death Metal bands go I could not even begin to list the ones that I enjoy, let alone the ones that I know.

That's one of things that I find attractive about Nile. They're amazingly technical. Mindblowingly, in fact. My favorite songs are Excecration Text, Wind of Horus, Sacrifice Unto Sebek, The Burning Pits of the Duat, and Chapter of Obeisance Before Giving Breath to the Inert One in the Presence of the Crescent Shaped Horns. As you probably surmised, I only own the albums In Their Darkened Shrines and Annihilation of the Wicked. I'd love to look into their previous albums, as I am highly impressed with the two I have now.

Aside from the technicality, I love the Egyptian-themed scales and progressions they use. It's a completely unique sound as far as Technical/Brutal Death Metal goes. I also love and highly appreciate their lyrics. It's not all gore-'n'-guts like a lot of Tech/Brutal Death bands are. Nile's lyrics are, as expected, Egyptian-themed, and they are very well researched. The jewel case insert provides not only the lyrics, but the story and history behind each song.

On the subject of Nile my favorite songs by them are The Blessed Dead, Unas The Slayer of Gods and their amazingly crafted 17 minute long song "In Their Darkened Shrines" Part I through IV. Though they are just as gorey in their lyrics as any other Brutal Death Metal band ever was well in their older days they were anyhow.

Bands that need to be mentioned in this thread are as followed; Demilich, Morbid Angel, Behemoth, Dissection, At The Gates, Hypocrisy, Old Funeral, (Old) Darkthrone, Winter, Atheist and Malevolent Creation. There is plenty, plenty more Death Metal out there I just cannot think of anything right now. My mind isn't here.

Well, if technically outstanding and complex music (Not lyrics per se, but they're good too!) than may I suggest the 18-minute masterpiece by RUSH, Cygnus X-1 Book Two: Hemispheres? I think it's technically perfect instrument-wise (Some of the greatest drumming of all time, courtesy of Neil The Professor Peart), and you can draw your own conlusions on the vocals (I happen to like them). No growles or screaming here, though. (You may like the lyrics though... I don't know, from my limited knowledge of death metal they seem to be along the same theme sort of. You should check out Sleep Terror, then. They're the only "instrumental Death Metal" band I've heard, and they sound incredible. Also, Vegan Uprise is another project by the same guys.

When I first started to get into metal I was really into Cannibal Corpse. But now I just find them boring. Maybe it was that I heard at least three songs by them every time I listened to the local metal radio station. It was pretty cool that they were in Ace Ventura, though.

I will continue to buy Nile's albums as long as they keep releasing them. And as long as I can scrounge up enough money to purchase them. ;)

Sympathy's latest album was pretty good, even though it was only 6 tracks and 2-4 of them were already out.

(PS - Slayer is not death metal.)

Sleep Terror is quite the death metal band this I have to admit. Very out there. Enjoyable on all levels as far as I'm concerned.

Cannible Corpse is highly boring which once again I agree with you on.

Sympathy's latest album I have yet to hear but it will come all in due time.

Anyways, if you haven't heard of the band Demilich I insist you check them out. I highly recommend that so go out and get this music now.

Another great Death Metal band is the Black Dhalia Murder. I heard them for the first time not too long ago, and I must say it was great. I'd really like to look into buying their albums. If you haven't heard them, take a listen. For some reason, I thought they were a hardcore band or something like that, but I was extremely, extremely wrong. They play very awesome Death Metal. Hooray.
