The fated day was ushered in by a rainstorm that drenched the town. Cosain hastily threw a cloak over her shoulders as she paced about the house. She paused briefly as she passed the desk where she had studied alchemy long into so many nights. Maybe it would help her somewhere on her path, but right now she had other worries. She was the Shield.

Cosain bid her father farewell but neither felt the need for him to accompany her to the Hall of the High Council. She wasn?t a child. As Cosain walked through the muddy streets past cozy houses filled with the glow of warm fires, she wondered why she had accepted this. She had never fought before. She had only ever used her magic for games and she had never even held a weapon. What made the High Council so sure she could handle the Shield?

The huge stone building, the Hall where the Council members lived and worked, was dark with rain. Above the huge wooden doors these words were carved:
Let us live with Strenght, Resolve, Loyalty, Wisdom and Cunning

Taking a deep breath, Cosain opened those huge doors and slipped inside. She expected a room full of people, but instead, one plain looking woman sat at the end of the hall.

?You?re the first to come today,? she said somewhat cheerfully, ?The others might be delayed by the rain.?

Cosain looked at her rather blankly.

?Oh! You probably don?t know who I am!? the woman realized, smiling, ?I?m the youngest member of the Council. It?s my job to greet you all and once you?ve all come I?ll fetch the others and we can tell you what?s going on. Feel free to sit down while you wait.?

Cosain nodded quietly and sat on one of the many chairs that faced the High Council?s seats. All that was left was to wait.

The first order of business will be to get your character to the Hall of the High Council where they await orders.

~If you have one of the items, you're there because you were summoned.
~If you don't have an item, you showed up and the high council is eventually going to ask you why you came (so start thinking about that). Your reason is whatever you want... to help a friend, to accomplish something, to do a duty for your kingdom, whatever.
~The knife has been sighted in a village on the outskirts of the kingdom... causing trouble maybe? You can either wait or have fun with that.

It was raining again. The sky was literally crying for reasons that no man could fathom and was intent on letting the whole land know. The earth turned to mud as the rain fell, and the collected puddles distorted the reflections of the towering pine trees overhead.

If anything could make a mountain crumble, it was the rain.

Rio gazed plaintively at the sky, yet managed to smile as the cold drops cut through his being and to the bone. Along with the chill was a sense of déjà vu?at a different time, in another place, a different man towed a different youth to the place that would ultimately decide their fate. He blinked the rain from his eyes, and in that instant caught a flash of warm eyes and a bright red scarf. Yes, he decided, it would be a day of judgment.

?What are you doing?? whined the youth in question, a bedraggled creature who probably hadn?t seen a proper meal in weeks, ?waiting for a landslide to bring the Hall down to you??

He glanced back at the youth that followed, and smiled sheepishly. ?No?nothing like that.? He replied, and started on his trek again. It was no time for nostalgia, even if the weather was the same as it had been that fateful day so long ago.

The young man gazed at the intimidating figure that was the Hall of the High Council, and decided that it was a day of judgment for more than one person. The Council had set a reward for the youth?s capture, as they had for many criminals as of late. Among the flyers was face that was all too familiar?

?Hey, mister,? called the youth, ?what do you think that the Council wants me for?? The question betrayed the youth for what she really was?a child. Her voice had taken on a quivery note, as if she was genuinely frightened.

??Ah?? was all Rio could manage at first. ?Well?you?re a thief.?

?So? There are other thieves!?

Rio sighed, and chose his words carefully. He was sorry to have to turn the girl in, but he knew what he had to do to maintain a clean image with the public and the Council. ?They?haven?t become a nuisance yet. That?s all.?

?So it?s a nuisance for me to try to keep some little kids alive?? She continued, a challenge in her voice. ?So the Council is saying to let these children die??

He stopped and, gazing at her directly, remembered a different time when a different youth had said something similar. In her eyes he saw the glittery tears that accompanied her rage, and shook his head. ?It?s not what you?re doing,? He said, remembering what the other man had said, ?But how you?re doing it. You?re not wrong in your drive, but you?re not right in your action.?

?Please, let?s just get this over with?? He smiled sadly at the girl, pulled his hat lower over his head, and approached the doorway with her in tow. ?I?ll find some way to help the children, okay??

With that said he pushed the door open and took her inside, nodded his acknowledgment to the two women inside, and was content to wait with the youth at the far wall of the chamber.

"Please, just leave me alone!" Chelsea screamed at the man that was right on her heals.

"Come now girl. Just hold still and it will all be over with!" The man had a sickening look on his face as he dove at her, only missing by an inch or so.

"No, I, I do not want to do anything." She kept running and finally came to a large set of doors. Without thinking, she opened them and ran inside, shuting the doors behind her.

"That was close." She breathed out as she realized that there were four other people in there as well.

"May I help you?" The older of the ones said from afar.

"Umm, well, I." She felt her face turn hot as she looked down and bowed. "I, am, I am sorry. I, umm, did, well, I did not know that, umm, someone was in here. Please forgive me." She felt her face getting hotter as she started to open the door.

"Now now, do not leave. You are welcome to stay and help these people." The lady said with a smile.

"YEs, by all means, what is your name?" The other girl asked sitting in a chair.

"Its, umm, Chel, Chelsea." She manages to stutter as she bowed lower.

Fay road on her carriage. She looked out the window and it was raining. The was probably the only time she wished it rained for weeks on end. To her disappointment she been summoned by the high council. She hoped it was a mistake. Yet when they summoned for her made her wrong. She sighed and remembered the talk she had with her father before she step inside her carriage to the high council.
"Father must I go? I don't think I'm up for this...There must be a wiser person then me. The scroll? There no possible way that responsibility can be giving to a simple child.." Fay told her father before her leave
"Fay please do not talk that way. The high council has chosen. You should act like is a honor not a curse!" Her father shook his head.
"Well how would feel if you had no obliged to save people's lives?"
"Act as if is a great honor..." Her father replied without a thought "Raise up your chin, back straight, and smile..."
Fay sighed and try her best to smile.
"Okay now...you must go.." Her father said helping her in her carriage
"If you say so..." Fay said getting into her carriageFay stuck her head out and talked to the driver
?Driver when well be getting to the High Council place??
?Well?the rain might be a bit of a delay...? The driver said
?Ohh I don?t mind the delay..?
?Well we can?t keep the High Council waiting that be rude??
?Ohh..yeah..? Fay sighed.
In a few hours Fay arrived at the door. She held her skirt tight and walk to the engraved doors. Great, wise was engraved in it. Fay touched the door tracing her fingers over the words. Well nothing more to do then to go in these doors and wait for orders. She opened the door with great hesitation.

Rain. Of all times. A violent coughing fit racked Devlin's frame. He pulled the soaked cloak tighter around himself. Was the weather a sign of things? The man looked up at the engraved archway, then over at his friend of old. "We're here. You didn't have to come?"

"I know," Torran replied.

Devlin had to admit to himself, he was extremely grateful. Opening the doors, he found they were not the first to arrive. Nor would they be the last he suspected. He tried to stifle the next cough; the room was so quiet.

"Good, good," A woman said. From her position, he figured it was one of the Council Members. "Have a seat. Others have yet to arrive."

Torran stood just behind Delvin, blade in hand as he anticipated an ambush. he didn't trust the people here and wouldn't be taken off guard. He walked behind Delvin, looking at those who awaited ahead. The woman suddely took notice of him "Who are you and what business have you here?" Torran stepped to the side so they might be able to see him "I am here with my friend. I'm not going anywhere." She looked to him for a moment "Okay." Torran was a bit surprised by the fact that she didn't try to stop him. He slowly lowerd his blade to his waist, but kept it firmly in hand. He took his place behind Delvin again and kept his head panning the room for any traps, he still didn't believe that these people were there friends.

Varyl skipped in the puddles and raised her hands to catch raindrops. She giggled like a little child.
It was raining in the small village of Fonrea and the streets were desolate. From a distance, Varyl could make out the kingdom. She smiled whimsically at the thought of it burning.
She came across a small inn and knocked daintily on the door. A gruff looking man opened the door, looked down at Varyl, and let her in.
She sat down at a table in the far corner and nursed a mug of ale. Soon enough, a drunkard came and sat down with her.
He laughed with a low rumble and squeezed her thigh. "What is a fine lady, such as yourself, doin' in a place like this?"
Varyl giggled openly. She hiked her skirt up to reveal just enough leg to get the fool subdued. She gripped his chin with her right hand and placed her lips against his ear.
She whispered, "Let's torch this place. This entire village!"
The man was at first, reluctant, but she easily made him comply. Within an hour, the whole of Fonrea was ablaze. People were screaming in pain and with loss. Varyl watched it all from a safe distance with satisfaction and glee. She moved onward to the next village and her next victims.
As she turned, the knife in her belt glimmered for a moment in light of the burning town.

The rain which chilled Joshua to the bone was relentless, never letting up no matter whom passed beneath it. Though Joshua had practiced with a sword and was decently skilled with it, the weight of a sword at his side was still unfamiliar. Joshua was now before the doors, reading the letters on them, and wondering why his father had given him this sword if he was just going to get The Sword.
Joshua sighed, smiled a ruefull smile and, hand on the hilt of his sword, opened the doors and steped in.
There were six people in the hall, seven if you included the lady at the front. Everyone turned to look at him when he entered, and though he gave no visible sign of it, he felt a great distrust of everyone in here.
But, disregarding the strength of this distrust, he nodded politely to every person present and took his seat to wait, hand never leaving his sword hilt.

Cosain had watched them all come in? a man leading a child, a frightened girl, a young woman (who was surprisingly dry despite the rain), two men (one who looked like he should be home in bed and another who looked rather paranoid) and finally a young man with a sword at his side. It didn?t take a genius to count 8 people when there should have been 4. Cosain silently wondered which of them were going to wield the items and which were here on other business.

The Councilwoman didn?t seem phased by the extra people. She smiled. ?Now? we have Mr. Joshua, Miss Cosain, Mr. Devlin and Miss Fay.? The woman?s eyes fell on each of them as she spoke their names. Cosain had to admit she was a little unnerved that this woman she had never seen before knew her.

?Oh!? the woman exclaimed, almost as an afterthought. ?You all must be wondering how I know you.?

They nodded.

?I know you because it was I who chose you all for this,? the woman explained. ?Well? maybe that isn?t the proper way to put it? the items chose you, I merely acted as a medium.?

She received blank stares.

?In legal matters I have the least power of all the Councilmembers because they have seniority,? she explained. ?But this is not a matter of law. I am the only medium in the Council and therefore it is my duty to listen to the souls of the items. They chose you because they see potential and good in you. They said there would be others but they didn?t say why.? The woman directed her smiling gaze at the four others. ?Mr. Torran? you said you?ve come to aid your friend? but what of you, Miss Chelsea? And you, sir? Why have you brought that child here??

The woman was still smiling but the tone of her voice indicated that she wanted an answer, and quick.

Rio bowed his head and blushed. "Well... I um..."

The girl took over. "I just wanted to do the right thing by helping take care of some kids. They have no parents and no home, so I am all they have. But--"

"That notice you put out earlier,"Rio cut the girl off, having gotten his thoughts together. "That notice had a picture of this girl and a sum at the bottom. " He pulled the folded piece of paper from his pocket. "This one." He opened it and showed it to the woman, praying that she wouldn't see beyond the disguise.

"The paper says that she is wanted for..." He coughed lightly, clearing his throat. "'Theivery, Rowdiness, and a Disturbance to the Peace."

"I don't see how I disturbed anything," The girl huffed. "These kids needed SOMETHING."

Rio glanced anxiously at the girl and shook his head, indicating for her to stop. She didn't seem to notice, but the council woman spoke before the girl could continue.

"I see," She said, "And I thank you for bringing her here." She reached into a drawer of a near by chest, and pulled out as small sack. "This is the sum that was listed, Mr..."

"Rio." He said, anxiously pushing up his glasses.

"Mr. Rio. " She smiled. "A small token of our gratitude."

"Thank you." Rio accepted it, only to shift it to the other hand and hold it back out to her. "But...I don't need it." He smiled slightly, and thought of the bakery he had hoped to open with that money. A bakery, now gone for a while.

"How so?" The woman asked. The girl was just looking at him like he was the worst idiot alive.

"Just...put this aside to open an orphanage or some other facility to take care of the children the girl loves. And...go easy on her."

He backed away slowly, turned around, and went to sit by the door. He felt the heat of blood burning his cheeks, and wondered if he was the biggest fool there. He took comfort in one fact; that he wasn't foolish enough to leave without the councilwoman's permission.

The Councilwoman sighed. ?That notice was put out to appease the shop owners who were stolen from and to make the people feel safer. No one on the Council actually gets any pleasure out of throwing righteous little girls in jail.? She turned to the girl. ?You cannot steal, though, even if it?s for a good reason.?

?But those kids?? The girl was cut off again.

?There has been talk in the Council of opening up an orphanage. There is already a suitable building for sale that we could purchase. Most of the council is for the idea and I?m sure with this generous donation from Mr. Rio, the rest can be swayed. As for your punishment?? the Councilwoman smiled. ?Considering your crimes I believe public service is in order. If we open an orphanage, someone will have to take care of those children.? She began making notes on her parchment. ?Until then we need to keep an eye on you, though.

?And Mr. Rio? although you are free to go, I think perhaps fate has brought you here for another reason. If you were able to capture this girl perhaps you have certain skills that could aid these four? You would be fairly compensated, of course.?

Chelsea looked at all the poeple and listened to everything said. Noble, what the girl was doing, but wrong, she thought.

"Now, Miss Chelsea, what reason do you come to our doorstep?" The lady asked, starteling Chelsea.

"Urp, well, I umm." She hunched down a little and turned her head.

"Right, I think I understand. You wish to rid yourself of this fear, do you not?" The lady still had a warm smile on her face as Chelsea nodded lightly.

"Well, yes, I, I do wish to umm, get rid of it." She nodded agian as she looked over at the wall and never left the spot she looked at.

?Patience is a virtue,? Cosain muttered. She really hadn?t intended to say that out loud but it just slipped. Cosain had to admit she was getting a little impatient herself.

The Councilwoman didn?t seem to mind. ?Oh dear, I?m making you wait. I?m sorry. Just let me fetch the old men.? She got up from her seat and went off to a side door. ?They?re all here!? she called in cheerfully.

Looking stern and stately, several of the higher-ranked Councilmembers came out of the side room and sat down in their seats. They really were a bunch of old men.

?What are these other people doing here?? one asked, sounded irritated.

The Councilwoman only smiled. ?This is how they said it would be.?

?Very well,? one of the old men sighed. He turned to the people standing before him, ?I trust you?ve heard the rumors. The Knife of legend has fallen into the hands of someone with a particular taste for? destruction.? He put a lot of emphasis on the last word, sounding grave. ?We need that Knife found and its wielder apprehended. Mrs. Kohai (he nodded towards the Councilwoman) will instruct you further and give you your items. We ask that you do this as a duty to your kingdom, your home. We will gladly compensate you but please understand that the four of you were chosen. This isn?t chance but destiny. We can?t easily replace you by any means. So, do your best? for all our sakes.?

?This way, please,? Kohai said, walking off down a hallway. ?Come on, this way.?

Devlin stood up and walking next to Torran, followed the Councilwoman along with the others. He suspected he wasn't the only one thinking 'why me?' at the moment.

"I doubt we are going to find any trouble here." A loss of breath took Devlin over for a minute. Torran gave him a look, but he returned one that said he'll be fine. "Normally the real danger doesn?t begin until the journey has started."

He could see his friend was still weary of the people, but said nothing else otherwise. 'Maybe I am the one too trusting,' he thought mildly.

Torran felt a little more at ease, but he still felt like there was more then they were telling them. Torran sheathed his sword and kept pace witht he others as they walked down this long hall, which was the only thing still bothering him, being surrounded on all ends like that only made him more paranoid, but he was going to stick with his friend no matter what happend.

Fay sighed and stood up to walk where ever Kohai was taking them. Fay walked with her head down looking at the floor. She saw Cosain person walking a front of her. She heard her mutter and Fay was ashamed of her impatience. Yet she just wanted to get over with this. She walked beside Cosain and sighed
"I'm sorry for being rude and impatient. It never was my best virtue. Kinda makes me a bit ashamed of myself..." Fay said looking down.
" Uh..I'm Fay.." Fay said nervously " Maybe there a item for impatient ness? Maybe I could switch with that?" Fay tried to make a joke and tried to crack a grin. She really couldn't really smile being under immense pressure

Despite how she sometimes acted, Cosain had a rather good sense of humor and enjoyed Fay?s joke. ?It?s alright. I was getting rather impatient myself and I shouldn?t have said something so rude.?

?Sometimes rudeness is honesty,? Kohai chimed in. ?And, just as it is rude for me to interrupt you conversation, I must inform you that we?ve arrived.?

Cosain looked at the plain wooden door in front of them. She watched as the Councilwoman unlocked the door and held it open. Ushering them inside, Kohai stepped in her self and closed the door behind them.

?You were each chosen for a reason,? the woman explained, walking towards a long altar. There lay four objects, each covered with a sheet. She walked to the end one and lifted the sheet off. The sword beneath shone in the soft blue light of alchemic candles. It was long and ornate, but surprisingly light as Kohai picked it up with ease and held it out to Joshua. ?For your strength, Joshua, the Sword has chosen you.?

As Joshua took the Sword, the Councilwoman moved on. Beneath the second sheet was a shield. Any dents it had must have been carefully worked out because its surface was smooth and silvery. ?For your resolve, Cosain, the Shield has chosen you.?

Kohai moved on to the next item, lifting the sheet to reveal a curled wooden horn, trimmed and inlaid with gold. ?For your loyalty, Devlin, the Horn has chosen you.?

As she handed him the Horn, the woman revealed the final item: a scroll, made of fine wood and parchment only slightly and gracefully aged. Countless spells and truths surely resided there. ?For your wisdom, Fay, the Scroll has chosen you.?

With all the items distributed, Kohai looked at them with a sort of sternness. ?Never doubt yourselves, this is your path. Only you can walk it.

?Now, the Knife was last sighted in the small town of Fonrea. It may have moved, but that?s your best bet for now. Please go there and see what you can find. And remember, let the items guide you. Now, with all possible speed, please go.?

The Councilwoman stood there as they filed out, four of them holding their items uncertainly and the others following behind. They left the Hall and walked out into the afternoon sunlight streaming down onto the rain soaked town.

?Horses have been prepared for you all,? the stableman called to them as they left. ?I was told it would take you about a day to reach your destination.?

Okay... so off to Fonrea, which is currenlty on fire. Varyl will be long gone when we get there but we'll pick up her trail... and maybe help the village out, ne? Sorry about the slow pace for this start off... ^^;;

Devlin rode beside Torran, not really joining in on any of the conversations between the others. The town of Fonrea, about a days ride. That meant most likely a night at an Inn and continuing 'pursuit' in the morning. Something ahead caught Devlin's attention. Dark and shapeless. Drifting skyward and threatening to pass in front of the sun.
"Torran, is that-"
"Smoke."
"Perhaps we should hurry."

Fay sat on a chair in the inn reading a book. She was deeply bored. There wasn?t much to conversant about. The objective was to find the Knife and stop her from causing anymore harm. That exactly what Fay wanted to conversant about there duty. Knowing there beliefs about this and if they truly believed in what there doing. She probably just feel foolish and ashamed of herself anyways. Fay sighed and put the book on a coffee table. She laid back on the chair and turned her head toward the window. There were clouds and wisp of smoke in a near by town. Fay eyes grew wide. The knife has already have set the town of fire?
?We must hurry. She has already have started..? Devlin spoke
?Yet she might not be there by the time were there. All we can do is help the villagers?? Fay said getting up and staring out the window.
?Maybe if we hurry fast enough we might stop her from setting more harm to the village. Lets must go now. Why are we setting here?? Someone spoke out
?No we can?t get there fast enough. Even through a rush. She has already left by now. She bet us to the punch. She probably was there for a few days skimming her plan to set it on fire. She probably got some people to join her. The knife is surely cunning. Our battle well probably only make the fire spread or cause more fire. We don?t know exactly how to use our gifts yet. We can only cause more harm then good. Especially me since the scrolls spells can cause much harm then good if not used properly?? Fay bit her lip. All they can do is get back on there horses and help the village out. If she had only had some practice with her scroll. If only they got there gifts a bit more early. Yet you can not change what already has been done. Damn sometimes she hate been ?wise?

Cosain looked down at the Shield. She felt connected to it, somehow?

?I think we should take a vote,? Cosain finally said. ?I think we should choose between staying here and practicing with our new items and going to the village to look for clues. If it?s a vote, it?s fair.

?I for one,? Cosain continued, ?vote that we go to the village and try to help because of the fire. I don?t think it will be that hard to use the items if we just trust them. A sword is a sword? it?s for cutting. A shield is a shield? it?s for blocking. A horn is a horn? it?s for calling. A scroll is a scroll? it?s for learning. It?s true that these items are more than just that. According to legend, there are souls sealed in here, and magic power. Perhaps it will take practice to harness the full power of the items, but for now we can try. That is what I believe.?

As Cosain returned her gaze to the Shield, her eyes caught Joshua?s. There was something about those blue eyes? there was an intense desire to do good, but suspicion as well. Why was Cosain so distracted by this person she barely knew?

Joshua fingered the hilt of the long ornate sword at his left side and said,"I vote we go help the village. Even if I can't harness the power of this sword, I still have the one my father gave me if fighting must be done. And to be perfectly honest, I think fighting is inevitable."
Joshua went silent after he said what he had to say. He drew forth The Sword to examine it like he had already done so many times, but still saw nothing different. The only thing that made it different was the fact that it sent chills through his body every time he drew it, and only he could feel that.
As he sheathed The Sword, he looked up and caught Cosain's eyes again and thought, A defender of the innocent. Just like me, except she defends with a shield. I don't even know her, much less trust her, so why...

We should truely help...." Fay bit her lip in thought almost drawing blood. Wow what a mess the knife left them.

Varyl entered into the town nearest to Fonrea. There wasn't a welcome sign of any kind, so as far as she knew, the town had no name. And she liked it that way.
She decided that this one, just like Fonrea, would be her little signal fire to her followers. A fire that would spread across the lands like a plague.
After spending some time listening in on the gossip at the tavern, she learned that a farmer who lived just on the outskirts owned three brutish attack dogs, who were trained to maul anything or anyone their master set them on. Varyl gleamed at the thought of setting attacks dogs loose on the town.
She watched the farmer and his watchdogs to see his way of authority. She then waited until nightfall and crept to the sleeping dogs. She mimicked the farmer's techniques and then left the farm with her new friends into the village.
