Mitch
I wasn't sure where to put this at, exactly. Since playing the guitar involves music. . .I consider this to be the best place. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, and it'll inevitably be moved somewhere else anyway. Anyway, as some might know, I'm learning to play the guitar. It isn't going smoothly, but I guess I just get impatient and want to be good right away. However, I practice, usually, for an hour or even more each day, and for as long as I've been playing (about 3 weeks), I'm pretty good, I suppose. I've almost completely gone through a beginner's book, and can now read sheet music decently (I never even knew how to before; at first it was so foreign). My friend's the one who's been giving me lessons. As far as chords go, I'm not doing as well on those, but I've been focusing on reading sheet music moreso than that anyway. Well, I was just wondering if there are any fellow guitarists out there. I was wondering what type of instrument (acoustic or electric, brand and so on) you learned on, any tips you can give me to help me get more of a knack for this, and anything else at all you'd like to say concerning playing the guitar. I already wrote the sheet music to what is eventually going to be a song, but I messed up a bit on my notes in a few spots, so yesterday, in frustration, I threw it away. Nonetheless, I have a picture as you can obviously see. I decided to include it even if I messed up a bit. Also, here you can dl a video of me messing around on my guitar, playing a kind of freestyled version of the above song. If anyone else has any videos or songs or just anything of them and their guitar, or them playing, don't be hesitant to share.
Kirika
I've been playing the guitar for a little over a year now. Two of my friends have been teaching me chords. After they moved, I began teaching myself. There are some good online sites that can show you all the chords. All you gotta do is take it step-by-step. Maybe learn a certain number of chords a day and practice them. I also play guitar for church, so that helps me better myself. I play both acoustic and electric, but in church, only acoustic :animesmil
Kuroshin13
Well, I don't acually play guitar. I'm a Bass player myself (both electric and upright), but a bunch of my friends all play the guitar. One of my friends acually takes lessons at a music store, another has been learning by ear form her dad. Between the ::counts on fingers:: four of them, everyone helps each other out with different things they have trouble on, like bar cords. I'm not quite sure how beginer's books work or anything like that, but if what I suspect, for fun you may want to look up the guitar parts of maybe a few songs you like to listen too, just to watch along with the music. Its a nice look into different styles of writing and such.
Noodle
Well, I have been playing guitar for a year and a half now. I started out with a crappy little acustic guitar with my uncle showing me some stuffs to get me started. My god, learning how to play was the most annoying and the most frusrating thing I have ever done. Now, though, I'm pretty good(No Jimmy Hendrix, but I'll get there.....eventually...) I just got a Bass guitar about 4 or 5 months ago, and I'm learning to play that...Not going so good though...D@mn you Bass guitar, with your stupid 4 strings instead of 6.... The really sad thing about all this is, I have no clue how to read sheet music..... :animecry:

Guest Heero yuy
Been playing guitar for two-three years. I started on Bass guitar first, and learning guitar increased my bass playing. But on guitar, what I learned on, was a Ibenaz acoustic, it was cheap, but without the sacrafice of quality. I still own it, and play on a good daily basis. I'm hoping to get a Gibson Flying V for elecric guitar. For getting better, I would learn a novic book, brush up a little more on note reading. Then after that, to make you own music variations, I would read music theory, and learn that stuff. That's what I did, I'm not extremely good, to the point where I'm busting out random solos, but I have my moments of glory on the fretboard. Keep learning, I'm sure you'll be the best. Ailes de Velour
I've had a guitar for...maybe four years? and I've been "teaching" myself how to play the whole time. I know how to read music (but I'm not all that great at sightreading) from two years of playing handbells and three and a half years of chorus at school (but I don't use sheet music for guitar, I use tabs). I don't know that many chords, but if I need to use one in a song I'm trying to play, www.chordfind.com helps a lot. I started with a cheap, student size acoustic guitar from Walmart, and played that for three years. Finally, last Christmas, I got a normal size Esteban Steel string acoustic, and a Wildfire electric a few months later. Now I pretty much use the electric, because it's easier on my fingers and much smaller than the Esteban. I can also play bass, but only because I know how to play guitar. It's very simple, unless faced with something like 'Cereal Wars' by AFI, because you have to have nimble fingers for the notes. The only solos I can play are the small ones that play slowly, like in 'Swing Swing' by All-American Rejects or 'Beauty and the Beast' by Nightwish. Sometimes, I try 'Bicycle Race' by Queen, 'Christmas in Sarajevo," or "O Come Let Us Adore Him/O Holy Night" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. T_T; no good. Anyway, yeah. I play guitar. =D
Jakehammaren
In answer to your questions: Guitar I learned on: Ibanez GAX-70 Guitar I currently us: BC Rich Platinum Pro SE Pearl Warlock, as well as the Ibanez on occasion Guitar I wish I had: Jackson RR5 Yay! Guitar! The almighty axe! I play a handful of insturments, guitar being my weapon of choice. I actually can't read music (which I should get started on... I can read flute music with no problem, but I'm just too darned lazy to learn it for guitar :animeswea). I guess I'm decent... I'm self-taught, and most of my self-teaching has been inspired by true Metal music (by the way, a steady diet of Children of Bodom and Yngwie Malmsteen can actually improve your playing! I swear by this!). I've never really owned an accoustic guitar, so that world is foreign to me. I'd love to pick up a Classical guitar (nylon-string accoustic) and learn some stuff there, though. Currently I'm working on soloing technique (scales, arpeggios, etc.). It's a blast. Sure, it's frusturating at first, but you'll start improving tremendously once you get over that "beginner's hump". I'm not sure what kind of music you're into, but I suggest listening to at least a little virtuosic music (Classical composers such as Vivaldi, Paganini, and Bach, and true Metal artists like mid-career Children of Bodom, Yngwie Malmsteen, and mid-career In Flames are great). From personal experience (I can't guarantee it, but it sure helped me), listening to stuff like this will help your ear and encourage your playing. Best of luck on your endevors! I hope it brings you as much joy as it's brought me!
SuddenDemise
I've been playing for 7yrs now...I learned the basics on a Yahmaha acoustic, then when I was 15 I got a POS electric, I'm playing on a Schecter Omen 6, through a Carvin SX200 amp and a Line6 Uber Metal Pedal Distortion....I taught myself all the way, but I have decided to go into lessons, cause I need to learn musik theory and I wanna learn to solo (I kinda know how already, but I wanna learn how to really SOLO)....Playing guitar has been the greatest thing in my life and I encourage all to learn some form of instrument, it makes you feel so good about yourself...The best advice I can give on learning is, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE...Learn Scales, get your fingers strong and learn to read tablature and learn alternate picking (Picking in up/down strokes instead of just down strokes)...www.guitartricks.com is a good site to learn from, and www.mxtabs.net is a awesome place to get tablature from....Well, good luck learning the guitar, remember to have a patience, your not going to sound like metallica on day one.... \m/
