I canot draw. Period. At all. I mean, I can, but I suck so rediculously badly it's not even funny. I even tried to draw in the style of FLCL... didn't work. I'm THAT bad. People tell me I should stick to writing storylines where I'm good, but I refuse. I have to learn how to draw! I tried using those How To Draw Manga books but they always said to start with circles and I can never get the circles right! >_< Should I give up, or what?

right, you have exactly the same properly i have, i can't draw using shapes either. so i suggest that you use the draw my reference techique (which is what i use). Start off by using an image that you really like and basically coping the postion of the body part such as legs and arms and then the head. Now if your like me you would always start with the side of the face, it's not the best way to start off but it will get you started.

Right i'm going to tell you how to do a image in you own style step by step.
First of all take this image and basically copy the shape of the faces and do several quick drawings of hair. (i have used this image cos it's nice and simple) One you have done the outline of the face and YOU are happy with it then try to match the hair style that YOU DREW and then posted it up and i give you a hand as what to do next.

Remember this is not copying, this is just a easy way for you to understand what a good designed character will look like. This will also get you hand fimilar with the shape that it has to start to follow.

GOOD LUCK AND PLEASE GET BACK TO ME! :catgirl:

Most comic/manga writers are also the penciler's of their book, so it would be a very good skill to pick up, but to be a good artist, you have to practice... now when I say practice I mean like, when your not eating or sleeping, or doing other physically important activities, you should be drawing. As soon as I get to it, I'll showcase some of my works, but to say the least, I've been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil or crayon in my hands.

So if you mean to start learning in later life, you should be ready to practice alot. One good thing is this, if you want to learn how to draw, a good starter off, is as previously suggested, tracing the work of others (preferrably those you like or would like to resemble). My first style was predominatley Dragon Ball Z, Akira Toriyama, cuz I constantly was tracing pics of Vegeta and Gohan. Eventually, I moved on to Street Fighter, and then, I began doing my own style, which could be described as Street Fighter meets Naruto.

I suggest doing alot of tracing on well drawn peices, and then, try drawing the same figures by just looking at the peice, and then eventually drawing the figures out of memory. Then after a while, try doing your own original characters in that style or if possible, a style of your own. I highly suggest this method.

Hmm...I disagree. I found tracing doesn't help me in any way. I like to develop my own style. Im not saying its a bad method, Im just saying it doesn't work for everyone. My advice? Get some drawing books. Not tracing, or copying books, actual drawing books.
Like you, I can't start off with the circle thing either. It's surprisingly difficult. It took me all my life to get to my current level, and I'm still learning, so dont expect a whole lot in a short amount of time. Take a class if you aren't a self learner. It'll shorten the time up a bit. If you want to see some of my own art, so you can see what I mean by developing your own style, go to my webcomic in my sig. Dont be afraid to experiment with different styles either. Other then that, all I can say is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! If you want any more advice, I would love to help you out, so dont hesitate to ask.

A tip would be to take a look at the guide at howtodrawmanga.com or go to the store and fetch a couple of their drawing books. Why "how to draw manga"? well, you say that you have a problem with geting the proportions of the character to look realistic, correct? Both the book and the "webguide" has a great way of showing how to help getting the proportions to look great by using circles and shuch to build up a skelleton (spelling?) and make the character easier to draw. If you ain't doing this allready then you should deffinatley take a look. I've been drawing myself for quite some time now and I've allways been using these and I couldnt possibly manage without them ^_^, so give it a shot!

Geh... I despise those "How To Draw Manga" Books. The art style is so generic and unoriginal. You can't just adapt your hand to a 'manga' art style and call it manga. Every mangaka has their own original style, and unless it is drawn by the same person, than you'll notice most manga have a very original style to them.

The books that I've seen have a very closed in sense of how to draw in a Japanese Cartooning style, when you should actually be trying to draw in a style that you feel is your own. I'm not saying that the books are horrible and shouldn't be used, I'm just saying if you wish to attain a style that is your own completely and that you can call original, then I suggest you only use the books for getting the thumbnails (rough sketches) down so you can understand the human form.

Tracing, however, helped me to understand the dynamics of a picture, how to use positioning and clothing to create a dramatic image that looked good on its own. Why not learn from the masters of the craft than take advice from a book trying to boil down the original art styles of manga into a generic 'style'.

I do agree that tracing it not the answer, but i find that if i am doing a fanart image and just i can't get a certain line right. I get out a new sheet of paper and trace that oartically line that helps my hand understand the shape that it has to go but i never trace the whole thing. I then use the sheet that i did the line on as a tester sheet for when i colour.

And for some reason i always like my chcaraters to have glasses, at least the seme anyway.

When i recommended the "How to draw manga books" I were mainly refering to the proportions part (the part that you call "rough skeches"), indeed the artstyle is very unoriginal but its for beginers and should in my oppinion be very basic. Another thing that I think is quite good about them is that you can adapt the basics to whatever style you wish to draw... atleast thats what I think :)

DON'T BLOODY TRACE! look at it and then draw what you see. if you trace it, you will learn very little. the how to draw manga books do jack(and besides, their style isn't even really manga. it's like sick american stled manga that makes you wanna die). i taght myself how to draw, and i've only been drawing for a little while, and i've never had a lesson in my life, i have based everything i have done on my how much want it. and it works. and sounds really cliche. lmao.
